  • Languages surround us wherever we are and wherever we travel, like a limitless buffet of delicious morsels of food. We can choose to limit ourselves to a few or to sample many. Here Moses Mccormick and I talk about the fun and challenges of learning many different languages.

    Moses was the reason why I got interested in learning different languages (seeing his interactions with different people).
    Steve was the reason (via ling) I’ve made serious strides in Chinese and Japanese via his input method.
    Great conversation. Would love to see more of them together.

    You don't need to be perfect in languages, you just have to enjoy the process. This is one of the reasons why I really respect Moses.

      Paul, just be aware while watching that video of 2 things: 1, that some people have "bust your chops" personalities, and 2, that that old Chinese man did say in that video clearly that Moses is a smart man. The absence of a sunny personality doesn't immediately mean someone is truly rude, sometimes they're faux rude, an aspect of their overall persona

    Steve and Moses level up together, they walk up to someone, that person turns out to be Filipino, Moses proceeds to talk in Tagalog (or try to anyway) while Steve sits/stands there awkward barely understanding what they're saying. The Filipino person tries talking to Steve, only to say something like "Sorry I don't speak Tagalog, maybe one day I'll try learning it (or not)" Then tries to pitch Lingq at them trying to get them to help create content.

    Dead at 40?? This would make sense in the 1500s maybe, but in 2021? Even people who are severely obese make it into their 60s nowadays, but Laoshu was a fitness fanatic. There is something very off about this story

  • @sardunai952

    "Farsi shouldn't be a problem with your Japanese background". The moment everyone realized that Moses has no idea what he's talking about.

    • @LogosTheos
      @LogosTheos 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      He does know what he is talking about. Japanese and Farsi grammar are very similar:
      th-cam.com/video/GwKVxAtazfw/w-d-xo.html
      Kaufman was referring to the family origin of Farsi so I don't think he understood what Moses was saying in regards to grammar.

    • @sardunai952
      @sardunai952 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@LogosTheos Farsi and Japanese are both SOV languages that use particles. But other than that, they are completely different. Knowing Japanese is not an advantage when learning Farsi.

    • @LogosTheos
      @LogosTheos 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@sardunai952 Watch the video. He never said Farsi and Japanese are completely the same but that knowing it does aid you in learning the word order coming from English as a first language.

      Why do you call them that?

  • @fangornthewise
    @fangornthewise 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't really like this approach of "sampling" the languages, don't see the point in learning them if i'm unable to have deep, engaging conversations and consume native material. I dislike small talk even in my native language. I don't mind not having this crazy, impressive number of languages under my belt, i'd much rather be proficient in the few i learn.

    • @fangornthewise
      @fangornthewise 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      And to be completely honest, i don't consider Moses to speak all of this languages, he may say so, but he doesn't really *know* them. You can't really claim you know/speak a language and be below B1/B2 level. You'll be just repeating basic phrases and greetings.

    • @kuya5000
      @kuya5000 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      that's fine to not like the approach, however majority of conversations you have are more often small / basic talk rather than deep intellectual conversations.
