    Moses and I originally did this last year. However, I could not get the sound to transfer from Call Recorder to TH-cam and gave up. Recently I again recorded with Call Recorder and this time Alex, of LingQ, was able to get it to TH-cam so I went back and retrieved this interview. I am sure it is still of interest. My apologies to Moses, and thanks to him for agreeing to put it up now.

    I always wanted to learn SPANISH and ITALIAN. BOTH are my love languages. But, I lacked motivation, discipline and perseverance. It would have been wonderful to have met someone who have those languages as their mother tongue to converse with. Most of all, it is just the love of learning a language that make you STICK TO IT. GOD bless you, Moses, you are my favorite polyglot. You are talented, blessed (and a blessing) & inspirational. Aloha from Hawaii.5/28/2019 HAWAIIAN is a beautiful language.

    This was very entertaining. I have considered learning German for years. My wife is originally from Germany, I attended night classes in the mid-90s, got a high school qualification as a result, but it was utterly useless attempting conversation.And now all my German inlaws converse in English, if they know any, or my wife translates. I will make more effort to expand my vocabulary, I have neglected my German for too long, my kids (5 and 3) know as much as I do now.Many thanks for this movie.

    I just watched this the other day, then realized just now that the interview is almost 10 years old. Moses has come a long way.
    I laughed when Steve was talking about Russia, and the ticket lady answering him, "blblblblblb". My Russian is not great after years of formal and informal study, and I totally relate. I can understand expected answers, but have great difficulty with unexpected answers or wording.

    Great video, watched the whole thing. I only have one thing to add to what Moses is saying about learning languages at school or university. I think the reason why learning a language at school may not be so great is because, yes, many teachers aren't too great, and many teaching styles aren't too great, but I'd also take into consideration that it's possibly because students aren't willing to put in work outside of the classroom. Learning in school can be a wonderful and rewarding experience, as I have had with Japanese, but I put in a lot of extra time to study on my own on top of taking language classes. When I stopped taking the language classes, it wasn't as motivating to study actually. I've gotten over that bump in the road now though, and am studying 4 languages on my own. I do plan to study more at a university, and would not discourage anyone else to do the same. A class is a great starting or continuing point, and self study is an excellent (and in my opinion) essential supplement to it. ^^ Thanks for sharing, and good luck to you all!

    I think the key for motivation is, to face every day one thing you are working for. A book, a movie, a community or what ever. You have to imagine every day how great it would be if you could speak this language. If you do this everyday you know what you are working for, if not you will forget why you learn, in my opinion. I mean I'm from Germany and my "first" language was/is English. Without English I couldn't consume a variety of the content on the Internet. That's what I faced every day!

    I think for sure, every language has its interest because you can speak it with other people. Even Latin or Ancient Greek still provide very interesting texts from the Antiquity, so even a ancient language has an interest.

    • @bhutchin1996
      @bhutchin1996 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Assimil has courses with recordings for learning Latin and Ancient Greek, but you'd have to have a good foothold in French (I do) to be able to follow the course. If you want to learn an ancient language for whatever reason, go for it!

    • @bhutchin1996
      @bhutchin1996 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lorax121323 Did you notice the fact that I wrote "go for it!" if he wanted to learn an ancient language? If you want to communicate with native speakers, do your thing, but nobody has a right to tell anybody else which language they should or shouldn't learn, even if native speakers are no longer around. There have been a few languages which have been revived and now are spoken as native languages, Hebrew being the prime example. In fact, it did a good job of creating neologisms for technologies that exist today. Latin does that to an extent, but of course it's not a language that someone would go to a country to speak, and Esperanto would be in the same category as Latin; however, at least Esperanto has people who speak the language since they learn how to talk from their Esperantist parents, and there are yearly conferences that speakers can attend as well as having speakers around the world. Would I learn Esperanto to travel to another country and try to communicate with the locals? Not a chance! I wouldn't even be able to make it out of the airport with Esperanto alone, nor am I a fan of the political aspects of that language.... If someone wants to be able to read original texts in Latin and Ancient Greek or even be a Classics professor, that's their right, even if I wouldn't personally choose it for myself. Of course, when devoting time to learning something, there is an opportunity cost (e.g. "Should I learn Latin or create the site which will replace Facebook?", "Should I learn Russian to be able to talk to Russian women or make mad money so I could marry one?"). People have different reasons for learning languages, and their reasons may or may not be ours.

    I stopped learning Spanish in high school because the class I was in was trying to cram the basics of the language into 1 semester (or quarter? Whatever 1/4 if there school year is lol).
    I was getting bombarded with homework... doing a bunch of conjugations Monday through Friday. Writing them down over and over again started to take more time than my other subject's homework combined.
    Yeah that killed learning another language for me pretty fast. Now I'm 26 and stumbled upon a black guy speaking Mandarin and other languages in public 😂😂
    I got an itch to go after it again, but probably Korean since I've already spent a year there and wanna go back in the future.

    Sometimes taking a course at a university can be helpful. Even though I wasn't fluent in Russian after the end of 2 years, I had the basics down as well as plenty of practice writing the language in cursive Cyrillic. That was something to build on. Pimsleur's decent, but nowadays I'm using Assimil with a spaced-repetition system, so for me I'm always in the active "wave" in Assimil, never the passive "wave" as their system would have you do it ("If you on Lesson 50, go back to Lesson 1 and start the active wave"). I already had 3 languages under my belt when I read Barry Farber's "How To Learn Any Language: Quickly, Easily, Inexpensively, Enjoyably and on Your Own" about 25 years ago; I think Moses would enjoy that book because the author had learned enough of several languages (even obscure ones) to be able to use them in different situations.

    ive been studying japanese for about 9 months, and id consider myself conversational (to some degree) to talk to my friends. Of course ill never stop learning it. I also started learning tagalog (only about 8 days ago T_T) but i wont drop that. I also want to try german soon, or some other european language. What ive gotten out of learning japanese, i get the feeling ive always wanted of being able to converse in something other than english, and its amazing and well worth all the hard work. :)

    We are forced to study languages in school. (at least California).
    I took french for 2 years only because there was a girl in the class that I liked. 8 years later and I probably know 5 French words max

    I think it's worth mentioning that the situation you mention buying a ticket can and does happen in your native language. Think about how often throughout the day you have to say; What?.... Say that again. Small miss communications in another language shouldn't discourage you when they happen in your native tongue all the time.

    Sign up for Benny the Irish Polyglot's newsletter. He has a list of forums. One I find useful is "italki." I am American. I speak English (mother tongue), German, French -- and I am learning Icelandic. And I think Russian will be next.

    The thing is when it comes down to it, people like the idea of learning a language but can't be bothered to actually do it. It's like learning an instrument and it requires a lot of work so you need to really want or need to do it.

    I think it's true that people give more credit for European language speaker, I mean except for Turkish or Hungarian, to speak Japanese or something. and Japanese who speaks European languages gets more credit than who speaks Turkish or Korean.
    I guess because it takes longer. you guys are so amazing not only because you speak many languages, also speak some "exotic" languages:)

    especially when you are on an exchange to another country, and everyone is always competing on "who can speak more fluently? How much can you read and understand the language?" I really hate that. I'm learning Japanese and I am on exchange and when I am with the exchange students I feel worse than everyone.
