  • Writing is sometimes not a necessary skill in our language learning, but it is always a great learning activity. When we write we take more care, we review what we have written, and we improve ourselves by ourselves. If you have patience, writing is a great way to improve all of your language skills.

Listening is #1. Do it enough, and things will just “sound” correct in your head. That’s the best feeling!

I've only recently realised this. how blind of me. I was watching language learning videos and people (esp. Lindie Botes) were writing diaries in whatever language, and i though only 1) how frustrating to not be able to express yourself and 2)what banal everyday things they are writing- but now I see the value in that exact thing. i guess i'll have to do it.

I'm now of the opinion that, ideally, a learner should do a lot of writing before doing lots of speaking. Because there's less time-pressure and more of an opportunity to do self-monitoring. A person who can write well can definitely speak well (if a bit formal), but a person who chats well will not necessarily write well. The language learning module is smart but lazy. If you say something that's technically wrong but gets your point across, you strengthen that pathway and then you'll say it the same way the next time you're in that situation. If you're not careful, you can end up saying it that way for the next 20 years. We all know people who do this. Incorrect output trains you to produce more incorrect output.

      Hello dear,
Unfortunately i don't agree with all what did you write, because the first ability that we need to improve is our listening and followed by speaking.... i mean we have to do alot of input works before we'll reach output aspects such as speaking as well as writing....
      Best luck

Yes I must disagree also Poleag. Writing is of course a beneficial language activity and can help improve the grammar of your speaking overtime because you can correct yourself as you write.
But in Ireland for example, many people can write in the minority language 'Irish' but their speaking of the language is very bad because they pay no attention to the phonetics of Irish and instead they allow the phonology of their first language, English, to dictate how they pronounce the Irish words. (It is so bad that even teachers of the language and University graduates speak terribly without following the rules of the languages phonetics).

Yes writing does make your speaking better but it takes time people don’t have. Writing is important, but it’s not as important as listening, reading, or (most of the time) speaking.

I think the optimal learning journey is a lot of listening followed or combined with lots of reading, then writing and speaking. Actually my active English greatly improved when I started to write on some forums, then I joined chat and then even did some calls:) I think that writing before speaking is quite reasonable approach, you can appreciate the nuances of the language much more while writing and you have more time to think about what you want to convey.
And in forums you can correct yourself by editing your message if you spot a mistake:)

I've just started working on my writing, wow. I've noticed that my writing skills were a bit meh compared to what I'm capable of and now I want to improve my writing. I write using paper cause I've also noticed that I don't feel as grounded in my target language compared to my native one and the one thing that I haven't had as much experience with when it comes to my target language is writing a whole lot on paper(the vast majority of public schools in Russia mostly use paper so you have to write everything down except for very long reports). It especially helps my ADHD haha I've noticed such a big difference with writing things down, I'm actually able to remember things I want to remember and the language feels tangible vs just floating in the air with me trying to grasp it. it's crazy how our brains work haha

Steve, I've passed B2 Dutch listenning and my writing exam is coming up next, so this is particularly good advice for me. I've practiced writing lots of words and sentences, but have only a little direct practice with paragraphs and longer pieces so far. I imagine a lot of that skill can be generalised between different languages though, so when I do write it doesn't feel difficult. I just hope they don't expect prescribed formats with words like "Firstly, furthermore, finally" that seem to be suggested in some writing tutorials I've seen.

I learn with Peppa Pig.. I hear and write, over and over again. 30 seconds today, 30 tomorrow and so on. .. but before to hear more 30 seconds, I always read everything from the beginning. Sometimes, I go to the grammar to understand better something. but it's not my priority. The number 1 is vocabulary. After 20 episodes, I speak enough the language to have a conversation :-)

I learn chinese because I want to read but handwriting helps me to remember better the carachters.
When you wrote chinese did you write single carachters or did you write whole sentences? I found chinese 练字本 to repeatedly write single carachters, but isn't it more effective to repeat whole sentences?

How do you feel about the idea of "speaking how you write in Chinese"? It feels like Mandarin really has a much sharper contrast between the two than European language. A lot of grammar and words like 與 該 於 as they're used in writing can even be confusing to hear for native speakers
