  • Moses McCormick, polyglot extraordinaire, has a humble good natured approach to languages and people that probably belies the concentrated effort needed to crack the code of so many diverse languages. We talk about it here.

    I like Moses. I know he gets a lot of flak from language learning forums because a lot don’t consider him a “true” polyglot - someone who can speak to almost complete fluency in many different languages, but I think he’s awesome. You can tell he’s simply in love with learning languages, and communicating with natives.

    • @AndyJugglesLanguages
      @AndyJugglesLanguages 4 ปีที่แล้ว +76

      He is a true polyglot because he is in love with learning languages. It doesn't matter how fluent you are, it's the connection with people that's really satisfying. Even if you can just say "Hello, how are you."

    • @jaredwilliams6853
      @jaredwilliams6853 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I found even once you are a polyglot if you aren’t utilizing the languages in an engaging way for yourself you will not use them as much and even not at all like he lives in the US so his way is very uncommon and I think that’s why he gets flak a lot of “polyglots” can’t hold conversations after years but know the grammar tables and more vocab probably so like everything there is trade offs and it’s really up to the individual.

    • @selinanoob8184

      I like his videos but his courses are just notepad files with a few phrases he uses in his videos. He then says for you to go out and speak like he does to people. Not possible in rural England and not at all worth the money.

    • @shakya00
      @shakya00 4 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      He is polyglot. Yes he doesn't speak fluently most of his 50+ languages but a polyglot is someone who is able to "speak" 3-4 languages or more. And he his fluent in some of them like Mandarin, Cantonese, Somali, Korean, etc. So yes he his a polyglot because he knows well 5-6 languages.

    Moses is the personification of what it means to be human (and Steve as well). It's not about how well you speak, your accent, or if you have a PhD in the language. It's about the people you meet and the lives you touch.
    Moses' technique/methodology is reaching out and including as many people in the circle of friends as he can.
    I hope I speak for more than just myself when I say how grateful I am for the content you both produce. You two are wonderful human beings.

    For anyone curious, the laws in Canada are pretty similar. No expectation of privacy in public. Therefore, one can freely photograph anyone in public. And you have no legal power to stop someone photographing you in public.
    Here's an interesting bonus fact while we're talking about recording people in various ways. This has to do with audio recording. Canada (all of it) is legally a "one-party consent" country. In other words, only one person who is engaged in the conversation needs to give consent, for the entirety of the conversation to be legally recorded. Which means that you can give yourself consent to be recorded by your own device and voila, you can record any conversation *that your are involved in* (very key distinction). Also you do not need to inform any other party involved in the conversation that you are recording them.
    If you are recording a conversation that you are not yourself involved in, that is very illegal and considered an illegal wiretap. Also it is illegal to posses "surreptitious recording devices" which I think (I'm not a lawyer for any of this) is a device specifically used to intercept conversations where you are not the intended audience (IOW a device that is used to eavesdrop on others' conversations, which in itself is an illegal act.) Devices like a laser-guided window listening device (point it at a window nearby where the target conversation is taking place, it hears the conversation from the vibrations off the glass. Crazy shit I know.)
    In the US, it varies from state to state. But all the terminology you have to know is either "one-party" or "two-party" consent. Two-party means that both people (or it might even be *all* people) involved in the conversation must first consent to being recorded. Doesn't matter if it's on the phone, in person or whatever. Only exception is recording someone in a highly public place where one could reasonably expect to have one's conversation overheard.

      ҉ ҉ Ooh, I remember now. I don’t think that system is good for measuring one’s speaking skills. My Japanese teachers on Italki are C2-B1(low intermediate, I think) and we never have any issues communicating and their accents are clear enough

    That’s true I’m from Saudi Arabia and pretty much I understand the Sudanese people and sometimes I try to use their dialect with them jokingly. They kind and good people tho.

    The flak with Moses is his language teaching business which is not very good. But he is a polyglot bcuz as an adult learner he can speak Mandarin Cantonese Vietnamese Somali. This C1 fluency is a nebulous concept. Fluency is about context. Can Moses survive in Hue Hanoi Saigon Mogadishiu Taipei Peking Hong Kong living amongst the people and speaking it I think yes. I also think his french and spanish is passable. So 6 languages at at least B1 level is already very good. But can he write a thesis or read a high brow newspaper or have deeper conversation in those languages as a quasi native speaker... if the agreed def of polyglot is native fluency in many languages then I will accept Moses as Multi Lingual.

    I don't know about the laws in the US but it's not legal in Canada. You can film in public but you can't distribute the video if the person is recognizable.

      Interesting comment. Out of all the things you can get from this video, you're only thought was the law. Why does Moses send you into such rage??? It's obvious that it's a matter for you.
