Levelling Up With Moses (laoshu505000): Part 3

  • Race is irrelevant to language learning. At every polyglot meeting I find people of every race and gender speaking lots of languages. Yet some people are surprised that people who look a certain way can speak certain languages.
*In reviewing this video I realize that I talk too much. Also our trip to Japan was cancelled because of coronavirus.

Steve and Moses do the best interviews together because they have a similar mindset when it comes to language learning. Neither of them are uptight or serious about the process which I think is nice.

The self awareness about talking to much in this segment is accurate, but that's okay, it's hard not to in a situation with someone interesting and a topic you are passionate about. I've been in that situation myself, essentially talking over the creator of Duolingo when I had him on as a guest.

If it was really simply spoofing common preconceptions so many people have, how do you explain the fact that dozens upons dozens of his videos have the words "Black Man" in the title? Now it seems like showing off as like the outlier that someone like him goes around engaging strangers in several languages on camera. If I met him, I'd speak to him in Ilocano just to make him back off and feel awkward for not understanding, and the language sounds different from Tagalog which kudos to him for at least trying to learn even though not surprisingly he doesn't speak all that well, we just appreciate it when people try

I understand your point that anyone can speak any language regardless of their ethnicity but we have to admit that the fact that a non-asian person speaks fluent chinese can be impressive. China did not have an immigration wave like English-speaking countries (such as USA, Canada, UK, Australia).

As famous as he is or may seem, I hope I never run into him. Firstly I speak a language variety he very likely doesn't know even though it shares some similar words with the standard language. Even still, he guesses people's background which I'm not sure how to react about a stranger just approaching me and immediately tries to guess my background or ask me to speak my language to reply in it if he guesses correctly, in which case if I speak my language he probably won't get it, even if he knows the country where it's spoken he'll try to get me to speak the standard language, where I could shame him for not knowing my dialect which I'm more used to and he should learn it. Good luck finding resources to learn some dialects. In any case, I can't stand showoffs of any kind, including polyglots who claim to speak 20+ languages and for some of them they only know or remember 10-20 words, and they flaunt their abilities and calling it inspiration.

Even if recording oblivious strangers is not illegal in some places, it doesn't necessarily make it right. All these vids of going around engaging potentially busy strangers and getting their faces and potentially names out on the internet without permission feels wrong, especially if they somehow find the video. How to discreetly embarrass a polyglot: use a language you know they don't speak. Although not surprising he doesn't speak Tagalog that well like most people, at least they tried so kudos for that, but should he approach me in public, i can speak ilocano to make him back off and feel awkward for not understanding as it sounds different from tagalog
