Dear, Dear Kate, I am in tears (and that is a good thing and doesn't happen vey often). I, too, am spiffing up a tiny lttle area that used to be a dog run on the back side of our little ranch house. Modest investment of some 16 x16" pavers on the outer rim to make it a wee bit bigger, and some paint for a tired little bench my brother made for me. I was feeling a little embarrassed about the result but now I am holding onto "Do the best you can do." I'm handicapped. I can't do heavy lifting like I used to. This is enough. Bless you my dear. Bless your dear Dad.

Anne, I am over here cheering you on! You have painted a bench, added some pavers (which are NOT light) and have made your corner of the world more beautiful and connected. That is no small feat. You have done something beautiful today and I’m proud of you. Thank you for being with me and my dad in spirit. ☺️

Thank you Kate for reminding me to sit down and appreciate what I have accomplished so far. We are ripping out wild elderberries, wild roses, wild raspberries out of a long untended garden we inherited from previous owners. I just decided to focus on how far we have come not on what is left to do.
P.S. Have you considered painting the concrete under the window to match your siding. You wouldn’t even notice the irritation hoses then.

@annelarson160 Good for you! 🎉 I’m a single small framed, older woman. My back garden needed done. I couldn’t afford to pay. I spent three weeks absolutely gutting it. Got completely out of my depth more than once. Spent as little money as possible. Is it perfect? No! Do I love it? Yes! Every time I sit out or look out I feel so proud. So should you! I keep going out and doing other little jobs as I have the time and money. It improves all the time and the incentive is there to carry on. You did great. Be proud of yourself.❤

When you started talking about the patio and the Adirondack chair being the best you can do, made me tear up. Thank you for saying that. I often feel the pressure to go big and grand when I watch some other gardening TH-camrs. Your video made me realize that I should be proud of what I have accomplished so far in the garden...even the patio paver that I put in last year that isn't perfectly level. I did it all by myself and I am proud of that and I love it! 🥹🥰

I am glad I read your post because I need to do as you state. I should be happy be happy for what I have accomplished. My flowers were kinda’ doing okay, but my mom passed away after 5 was hospital stay, hospice and the services. I spent so much time weeding the flower beds and was two steps behind all summer. We had vacation, disabled husband didn’t water things and. been so discouraged. However I chose to think this - I’ve kept the bottom down hill of lot mowed and have for 10 years! It was the best I could do

This is one of the best gardening videos ever! Thank you for acknowledging what so many of us struggle with…waiting for perfection instead of embracing what is….”this my best right now”. In addition to sharing your wisdom you are such a great teacher of design. Expressing your thought process as you are designing is so helpful to me. Thank you for taking the time to enrich the gardening world.🌸😀

This is such a great video. I think you can tell from the comments that you are touching hearts. I went through a divorce and had to sell my dream home last year. It was really a once in a lifetime home in all ways-gardens, pond, orchard, chickens, horses. I’m starting over in a builder home with a small yard and not a lot of money. I bought some decomposed granite, made myself a little patio, bought some furniture and at first all I could think about was what I had lost, what used to be. But today I sat out there and enjoyed it, realized how beautiful it was and I did it myself. A neighbor said they loved it because it looked like a little beach. It’s the best I can do now and I’m grateful.

I have done my gardening at several homes throughout my life and they were all rentals and my budget! My first try years ago for walls and privacy I used old fence paneling and tied it to a broken chain link fence with barbed wire! It had a trumpet vine that was “borrowed” from the neighbors fence! lol. Then each payday I bought 4 square pavers, leveled the ground and placed them like your little patio until it was about your size! It was all the room I had and it took me months to get it done! I made an arbor from cedar posts on the property and planted honeysuckle around it! I put a small table with 4 chairs and my girlfriends used to love and come to have a drink, talk and laugh! One of my favorite memories! ❤❤💐🌺

I really want to thank you for this video.
Money is really tight for us right now so I’m not feeling like I can go buy new plants or a new trellis that I have in my vision, BUT I can take time to take joy in what I DO have. My garden is producing vegetables that I’m able to eat and also share. My flowers are blooming and make me happy to see but also bring color to the garden and I’m picking small bouquets to take to the office to bring joy there.
I am physically able to go pick apricots from neighbors loaded trees and share with many including four boxes this morning that I dropped to the food pantry.
I have a yard many would love to have and I need to give myself grace and say to myself that I’m going the best I can.
Thank you for your thoughts today!

    • @lauramitchell6725

Money is tight for us too. Last year I had four huge pots from a yard sale, on my deck with tomato plants.(the cost to yield ratio was even, so I didn’t want to bother this year.) However,I had these attractive pots with store bought (gasp) potting soil,so I asked my sister for some random things from her back woods. She gave me the “fillers and spillers” and then said to buy some pink petunias to be the “thrillers”. In the meantime, one of the pots sprouted four volunteer grape tomato plants and some pink petunias from last year. I transferred the petunias to the other pots and I have four nice, full, attractive pots,FOR FREE. It reminded me that I have a large Hosta bed that needs to be thinned so I will offer some to a young couple I know, who just purchased their first home and landscaping is not in the budget this year. It never hurts to ask a friend with an established yard and garden if they have things to thin out and share.🤷🏼‍♀️🙌🏻

I appreciate the moment you took to think about the people who put in the patio and appreciating how that was the best that they could do. I am one of those people slowly improving my home with no budget, through repurposing, recycling, and sweat equity. I just took out the front grass hill by the sidewalk and replaced it with a decorative rock wall and flower garden completely for free. Did all the labor myself and sourced the stones from a local property who was having them removed and I saved them from the dump. Took 2 months on my days off and working in the rain. But I'm so happy with the result!

14:24 I haven’t even finished watching this video, and I was so moved I had to come and comment before continuing on. First, I was nodding and thinking I can totally relate in regard to powerful thoughts moving through when doing tasks, such as pressure washing, that don’t require a whole lot of thought to do. I was so touched when you honored the person that created the patio in the first place. A lightbulb when on when I thought how, as a recovering perfectionist, I find so much more peace and progress in creating within my abilities and limitations, learning from failures and surprise wins, and growing joy and gratitude in the process that I ever got from striving for perfection. I thought about how I can only hope that others can sense the heart and soul I put into my humble garden and see it as an extension of myself. I was so moved when you shared your powerful message of waking up with gratitude and doing the best you can do today and being ok with it. Apparently my soul needed this affirmation because tears welled up in my eyes and my heart swelled. Thank you so much for sharing. 💞 Now, on to watching the rest of the video. ☺️

You have some wise words regarding making a space that someone else created into something really special. And as usual, your videos hits home as if you knew what was going on in my mind. I just spoke with a friend who just purchased a home for herself and her dog. She told me how she never uses her back yard as it is just an empty square with no privacy. I am stopping by tomorrow to help her envision how it can become her private sanctuary. And I will forward this video to her. It couldn’t come at a more perfect time❤. Thank you.

    You are my Soul Sister!
You had me 😢😢😢 as soon as you said you were in deep thought while pressure washing, 😂😂😂😂
    I do the same,
I start washing my concrete jungle, or while tending to my little garden or while doing some painting touch ups & my brain goes all sentimental.
I think about the past owner of my home, and how excited they must have been when they built or bought this house.
I think of my Mom and how she would of loved to have what I have today, but I’m grateful that she gets to see what her sacrifices have done for me and that I still have her with me and get to share blessings with her!
I’m so happy that you shared this today, I thought I was way too tender-hearted, and needed to be put on meditation lol!
Thank You for making me feel normal with my/our thought process.
And yes it’s okay to have a plastic garden chairs!
I took some old teal colored ones and sprayed paint them Gray and threw some adorable pillows from Home Goods on them and they are looking Fab!
and I couldn’t afford to replace my fence so I threw some black paint on them and now they look amazing! “I don’t need a new fence No More” 😘
    And regarding Garden size,
my garden it may not be big & fancy, but it the most beautiful little cottage garden ever. So many people walk by my house and tell me they loved what I did and how beautiful my little garden looks, 2 people told me it looks so “Zen” GIRL!!!
I live NYC! “ZEN” is the biggest compliment anyone could ever give me!
fyi: most of my plants I grew from seeds using the winter sowing method! “Milk Jugs” 😘
Plants are gorgeous, but they is no prouder feeling in your Garden when the most beautiful plants are the plants you grew yourself from seed!
Again thank you for sharing your thoughts and to everyone reading this YES!!!!
Yours Best is Good Enough!!!! XOXOXO

Lucy…. My pressure-washing-meditation friend… thank you for watching and affirming that these moments of reflection are important to vocalize. For a split second I hesitated recording these thoughts. But then I thought of the person that needed to hear an encouraging word. And I thought how by allowing me to speak my truth (that this is more than just a pretty patio) that it opens the door for others to speak their truth. Please say “hello” to your NYC Zen Garden. THAT is an incredible compliment and reflection of the gardener you are. Bravo, friend. 💞

My only suggestion ... I would paint everything below the window the same charcoal as the shingles. I tiny fire pit in front the two chairs would be so cozy in the evening. What a satisfying project. Howdy neighbor, Excellent makeover with those pots. Beautifully done. Love your cut flower garden and you are able to reconnect with it. I lost Momma last year day before Mother's Day/& my birthday. I was unable to do anything, as my grief crippled me. We moved into her house, but i couldn't get into the garden.
I was able to venture out, slowly, this year and back into the gardens we worked for over 40 years together here in Lakewood. Grief is a fickle beast indeed. I'm so glad you are able to see your cut flower space and work in it with your father in your heart. Blessings to you from Lakewood. 💛🖤💛

Wow, nothing is coincidence. Everything is for purpose and for me I truly believe, and have witness that God has every one of us on this earth for a purpose and eternal purpose.
You were day one lesson one was so confirming I had prayed this morning. That guy would direct me in my physical activities of building my little oasis in life. What I mean by that is I live in a tiny house that I’m always working to organize a small space on a small budget. But nothing small when it comes to a full life no matter what your surroundings are. You were so right when you said do the best you can with what you have basically and it is OK. So true because it’s actually better than OK. It’s perfect for you and whatever stage of life you are. Thank you for this.🌻 you are God planted in my life today!

Sweet. You know, cleaning the area and trimming the overgrowth doesn’t cost a single dime. It makes such a big improvement. Sometimes that’s all you need to do. You could have pressure washed those plastic Adirondack chairs too. If they are not broken, plastic chairs like that clean up very well. I love your self-watering pots and your generously crammed flowers, but they weren’t really necessary for your lovely spot. You can have a quiet haven without them since you are surrounded by greenery and a nice view. I agree with others who commented about painting your concrete the same dark gray as the house. This is just lovely. Thank you for your tips and your kind thoughts. I hope you enjoy your little patio. 👍
