- I've been watching this TH-cam channel called ProjectJDM with these oddly satisfying pendulum-like sequences and I thought it would be cool if someone made a full song out of that concept :)

I'm here listening and trying to find out our which 16th/32nd/64th/128th note is on the down-beat at any given point in time. This would be HELL to actually perform. It sounds awesome, but if someone was asked to actually perform this on a real instrument their mind would melt.

-what a polyrhythm can do
-that this video is not a shitpost
This is actually a technique called phasing! :)
that video was a polymeter, not a polyrhythm
this is a polyrhythm, a polymeter is 2 or more different time signatures being played at once.@@minkmiau
Please explain all of these things thanks
A Polymeter is 2 or more different time signatures being played at once, like a melody in 3/4 being played at the same time as a melody in 4/4.
While a polyrhythm is 2 different amounts of notes are being played at once, like 5 evenly spaced piano notes and 3 (also evenly spaced) piano notes being played in 2 seconds@@PunishedDad

This is rhythmic phasing. It cycles through continually shifting polyrhythms. The drums are in 4/4, the synth is playing sequences of different lengths that are slowing down and speeding up through the song, generating different polyrhythms as it goes. It’s not one polyrhythm, it’s every polyrhythm that can possibly exist. In case anybody was wondering.
Sort of, but also not quite. This is 20 different ryhtyms stacked on top of each other; you could make more but it wouldn’t sound as good or translate as well.
Maybe the right phrase is every sequential polyrhythm that can ever exist? Wouldn’t there be an exponentially infinite amount of polyrhythms out there?

The production takes this from a curiosity to an artwork. Fuckin lovely.
What a quote 👀
Glad someone else understands how insane it is to produce something like this 😮😮
a bored engineer who is creative.
VR is one of the most talented electronic producers ever his sound design is practically unmatched
That is amazing! Such a great sound
Wait... BUT ISN'T THIS A POLYMETER THO???
It still doesn't change the fact that this is absolute fire.
Everyone's talking about the midi, but watching the individual notes dance around on the spectogram is SOOO satisfying.
in retrospect I should have fed the spectrogram with JUST the sine-waves, without any of the effects on it and without the drums. Well, next time.
@@VirtualRiot part 2 confirmed??? 👀👀👀

Feels like I'm cleaning my hearing nerves with fresh water.
Now that you say it, yes. And I’m going to be coming back to this video whenever I need a mental break so I can just space out and stare at it for almost 8 minutes straight XD
REAALLL HOLY SHIT
You've earned a new subscriber with this one!! Fluid, evolving, hypnotic~
This is genius!!
Very well done, and you also have a music video concept ready as well 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Reminds me of when your listening to a good beat in the car, you want to turn at a stop light and the sound of your blinker slowly starts to match the beat, then you notice the blinker from the car ahead slowly starts to match the beat too, and then you realize the second car’s blinker ahead of you starts to match the beat, then the light turns green and everything slowly goes out of sink again, but that moment where everything was in rhythm and lighting up right on time was just perfect
wow this is beautiful
It's the little things
this happens on my way to work
out of sink, truly /j
oh boy i sure hate it when things go out of sink
Anyone can make a polyrhythm, but very few can make such a masterpiece out of it like this
this also really isn’t in the spirit of polyrhythms, but more wave interference/periodicity
@@WiggyWamWam seriously. i've been seeing a lot of "polyrhythms" on youtube, but they aren't like.. quantified or understood in the song itself? i don't know how to explain, but its just like a mathematical stretching of all notes across whatever scale, adding space in between. Seriously not the way they're used in actual music and very weird to even call it "polyrhythmic" when really the rhythm is changing every 0.001 seconds. just a sliding time change that is very whacky
Not monorythm purists
@@tabbycrumch3062I feel like there are several sections in here where the backing beat could have done a time signature change or something that would have gone hard as fuck. I dunno seems like a cop out to just throw a boots and cats beat on it and call it day
Edit: not to disparage the creator or anything you may not have been trying to make a masterpiece work of art I recognize that and it's still enjoyable content, I'm just speaking within the context of this thread.
this was the most beautiful thing ive ever heard
Truly a pleasant and wonderful piece to listen to even without the novelty of being an incredible polyrythm.
Brilliantly done work!!
*Sees video title* "What the f- is a polyrythm?" *Clicks and watches* "I would die for this"

I like this slow transformation into "Jacob Collier for Ableton nerds" you have going here. Very cool
Yep !
Perfect description.
Virtual Riot x Jacob Collier - polyrhythm in G half Sharp
It's Steve Reich, not Jacob Collier
he has summoned all of the Jacob Collier fans (like me lol)
This is what we will listen to in 1000 years
Sooooo goooood! Congratulations, I just dived deep inside the vibe! So cool! Just saved the video as well. Cheers from Brazil! 🇧🇷
This was so incredibly relaxing. Didnt even notice 8 minutes went by.
Right?? You're just absorbed into this world of sound without a thought of time.

Genius!
This just brought back feelings and emotions that I haven't experienced since the first rave I went to with my brother. the journey I experienced in those 8 minutes, is almost incomparable.
i love how you automated the reverb mix on the main plucky synth to fade it's transients out into the background when it's more out of time to just flip it back to dry instantly when it gets back on beat. Such a nice detail, so satisfying
Just perfectly accentuates the polyrhythms
I have no idea what any of this means, but yes, I like it too.
@@adrenalinerider3030haha it’s ok ❤️

This sounds like a trippy 60's electronic music experiment with a dope beat under it.
My brain loves this.

I love how you subtlely fade in and out different effects and instruments playing the same set of notes, making an actual nice piece of music. Wow
Same synth, just modulating the parameters
this is magical man. absolutely brilliant
dude...that idea alone is so fukn good...love it
edit: yeah no im gonna download this an put it in a playlist 100%
I wanna see this turned into a 10 hour loop perfectly matching the last beat with the first beat, so it's just a consistent never ending polyrhythm throughout.
I'll see what I can do

Agree, I think there's like moments like that you could loop and make a bit more of a conventional track sound great. I'm sure lots of people are doing it with the session file.
@@RJ1J Yeah, that element of the track is pretty cool. It sounds like it's reaching a drop, and then keeps on morphing and evolving to the next one. Really wanna here a finished version, though, where moments like that actually stick - that would be really cool!
