    Long time BMW mechanic and mechanical engineer here. Not suggesting that makes me smarter than anyone else, but I do have a great amount of experience and analytical understanding in this space. A seized spline at the rear junction will cause a huge increase in the stresses seen in the u joints, particularly the one in the rear that sees angular excursions with movement of the paralever suspension. So, I fully agree that lubing the splines and adding the duckbill, one way valve is advised. However, I don’t believe that the lubing needs to be done every 12000 miles. I don’t know where that number came from. I sincerely doubt that the shaft splines will ever seize together once they have been properly lubed with moly paste. I did both ends on my 2016 R1200R, but worth noting that the front one is mostly locked in place with a snap ring, so only really needed to ensure ease of disassembly if ever needed. I also added the valve. I may check my rear joint again at 50K miles. I’m not aware of any seizures on joints that have been lubed. What about moisture? If you take a look under an old car or truck you will likely see U joints exposed to moisture that are covered in rust but working just fine. They were always meant to be re-lubed every 25K miles through zerk fittings but few people actually did this and many don’t even have the grease ports. So why are ours sometimes failing? I think it’s likely a combination of things that don’t play well together. Ours are in a semi enclosed volume that can let moisture in and also experiences pressure fluctuations. These pressure fluctuations don’t occur on the exposed u joints on your car. They do occur in CV joints but these are sealed from moisture with proper boot clamps. I suspect that the pressure is sometimes pushing moisture past the bearing seals and leading to corrosion on a bearing that is already relatively highly stressed. Moisture plus pressure = water possibly getting into your bearings. So what to do? I actually think that the duckbill “fix” is (or should be) intended to minimize the pressure peaks as much as letting moisture out. So, lubing and venting should prevent two failure modes of joint seizure and moisture incursion into the sealed u joint bearings. Worth noting that failure has occurred on very few bikes, but it is indeed a serious failure. Not defending BMW for not lubing splines at the factory or technicians for calling it unnecessary. Both are wrong.

      Mine is a 05 GS . It was a display bike in a hanger with many other expensive toys. It only had 1,700 miles on it in 2019 when I bought it. The first thing I did was to change all fluids and lube spline. I don't understand why people don't do this.
      I know this is a little off topic, thanks for listening (reading that is).

    Bought mine new in 2017 from Max BMW in Troy NY. Had the 20,000 service done at 17,000 miles. While it was there I also had them remove the drive shaft and lube the splines. They told me it was not necessary and did not need to be done. I asked them to do it anyway, which they did. When I got the bike back they told me it there was a ton of rust and they had a really tough time taking it apart.
    This week at 24.000 miles I sent it over for tires and to get the driveshaft tested. They told me the driveshaft failed the test and they installed a new one. I'm glad I had it checked out.
    PS. Thanks for the info, your video on servicing the driveshaft was the reason I had them check it out during the 17,000 mile service.

      I'm glad you received a new drive shaft and these videos were helpful. That makes me happy I was able to give you that peace of mind.

    My 2019 1250gs was checked last week. It was found that drive shaft was seized solid on the final drive unit. So much so, that both the drive shaft and the complete final drive unit were replaced. All I can say is,. thank goodness I did not have to pay for it.

      Thanks Adrian for the data point. Good luck with the now revised system and hopefully you get many more miles of fun out of the bike.

    Thanks for the video Adam. I hope you don't mind, I linked this on the final drive lube thread on ADVRider. Also, even though my 1200GS is a 2009, I lube the splines and change the FD fluid when doing the rest of the 6k mile maintenance.

      Hi Andy. Thanks for watching. This is my first 'foray' into motorcycle news & info versus just Farkles & Travel so I'm sure most people will just say my video was too long :P I used "Recall" in this case because that's what most people will search TH-cam for. Most won't search YT for "service action" so I chose to use Recall & service action in the title in hopes more people find it. I do want people to be aware of it but, you know me, I'm not an alarmist so like I said, I'll just have them do the test when I go in for maintenance but I'm in no rush to get this job done. I've lubed the splines once a year since I got the bike and they're in good shape but rusted on the surface. Thanks for linking to ADVrider. I'm sure people will have opinions :)

    My 2018 RT had the drive shaft completely seized onto the final drive. I checked after warranty. During warranty I asked the dealership to check it: I was told it’s good for life lol. I did manage to get mine released (ton of PB Blaste, a bit of a wedge and a drift with extremely gentle hammer touches). I sent the pictures to the dealer. Never heard a word back. When I mentioned the recall on the GS, they said it doesn’t apply to the RT. Very good then

    • @AdamChandler86
      @AdamChandler86  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I refuse to believe any part or fluid is good for life. That’s just language theee companies should stop using.

    • @memewizard8372
      @memewizard8372 ปีที่แล้ว

      Go complain, if the dealership files a TSARA case it's very likely BMW will replace your shaft for free, but they'll only reimburse the dealership the parts and for a set amount of time, even if it takes longer than the allotted time, hence why the dealer might not want to replace the shaft unless you really insist.

    I did mine at 12K, never did a water crossing and the splines were welded by rust. I had to drake the drive shaft stuck to the final drive to the dealership. The only way to pray it apart was with a blow torch...

    • @AdamChandler86
      @AdamChandler86  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yep, your experience is identical to what others have had. That's why I pull the final drive at the 600 mile service and lubricate it so it doesn't seize. It seems even just riding in the rain and condensation will get in and cause rust and seizing of the splines at both top & bottom.

      After seeing several videos I got concerned and did my final drive at 24,000 miles. To my surprise I had NO RUST and the shaft was still lubed. I haven't done any water crossings and bought the bike used with like 4,000 miles. I lucked out but turns out was a real easy job to do. Glad I did it.

    • @AdamChandler86
      @AdamChandler86  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      NICE! There are a few that came lubed from the factory. that certainly helps..that and the little boot being fitted perfectly and sealed. Every final drive has a breather on top that if you're not doing deep river crossings, won't ever take on water.

    I just bought a second hand R1200 GS air cooled with full service hisory at BMW dealerships. The bike has 38 000 km. On receiving the bike I booked it in for a major 40k service and even though I asked for them to service the final drive on receipt of the bike they did not perform the final drive service. My next day trip ended in a failure. Very disappointed!

      That would be my heated seat controller from Sargent seats. Just last night, I rode 6 hours straight with temps as low as 30 degreesF and the heated grips, heated seat and my Hippo Hands that go over the grip made that possible. It’s a nice add-on.

    Seems like they should have gone the AG route like farm tractors and add grease zirks to fill via grease gun for the splines so new grease can push out old grease.

    So now the latest from BMW is they will replace drive shaft at certain mileage(s). Period. (And, new drains will be put in.) They will do so at intervals for life of the motorcycle. So, get a new one in, lubed both ends and good to go. I'm going to see if my dealer plays dumb or is going to follow BMW's guidance.

  • @priestharis1565

    How is it possible? Metal on metal... but not lubed from the factory???

    • @AdamChandler86
      @AdamChandler86  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Nope. I hear they’ve gotten better about it but BMW has beeen selling shaft-drive motorcycles for nearly 100 years and yet still not adding lubrication is just insanity unless they just want you to spend $1500 every 5 years on a new drive shaft.

    I"ve been looking at new bikes. I've owned a 2012 GS in the past and enjoyed it. I've owned 3 R75's and currently have a R75/5. Why can't BMW get the final drives right anymore? Service bulletin.. From a "legendary" touring motorcycle company. BMW sure has out-Harley'd Harley for pretentious yuppie machines not made to last. After test riding a K1600GTL and GT, and a new GS, and this latest final drive issue.... pulling out a drive shaft every 12k miles... absolutely ridiculous for a "touring" motorcycle and the TFT fail.. a crap proprietary app, won't do CarPlay or Android Auto, what a joke BMW has become. Yuppies only.

  • @dcxplant
    @dcxplant ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Only BMW can take a simple shaft drive concept and foul it up making it unreliable. I'd rather have a chain than deal with this nonsense.

    Shame on BMW! Screwing up a very simple proven design! My 1982 R100RS has 165K miles and my 1999 R1100RT has 121K miles and the splines are flawless. No rust anywhere. What a joke! Pull your head out of your arse BMW!

      I agree with you. I see how people try to find a reason for the failures and the reason is in front of our own eyes. This motorcycle is the half of motorcyle it used to be. It may be more powerful, faster and safer but when BMW put a liquid cooled engine into R models, started to built a cheaper motorcycle. And now a few days ago BMW issued a recall for a Gearbox Input Shaft Failure. THAT is a real shame!
