  • 2021 Ford F150 5.0 V8 Cylinder Deactivation & Oil Pump Belt Explanation - JLT Catch Can Install
    - In this video we discuss the 2021 Ford F150 Gen 4 Coyote 5.0 V8 changes. Cylinder deactivation and the move from a chain to a belt system for the oil pump are going to affect the aftermarket's ability to add a supercharger or turbos. The ECU still needs to be cracked so that the 2021 F150 can be tuned before we will know if cylinder deactivation can be tuned out. Will the oil pump belt be a weak point when adding power to the Gen 4 5.0 Coyote engine? We also install a JLT Oil Separator (Catch can) from Sam's prior truck.

I'm going to wait a year and see if anyone actually has problems with it, but they also made it stupid easy to disable, one little plug and that's it, gets rid of stop/start too, and it doesn't REALLY help mileage, but it does help emissions, which is what they're really worried about.

I have a 2020 F150 and for that reason I did not install a catch can, however I understand your reasoning since you had one from your old truck and want to see if it will catch any residual oil. In my opinion I believe Ford is being low key in regards to the cylinder deactivation because they do not want to discourage people from buying the V8 since other manufactures had problems with cylinder deactivation.

Engine has been flawless and runs almost as strong as it was when it was new. I did put a catch can on @ 100k and probably should have done it sooner though. If I were to buy another in 2021 I would probably go back to the Ecoboost. Engine is even more powerful, the truck is lighter than mine and with the port and direct injection they have fixed the intake valve issue that GDI vehicles are known for. Should be a good truck.

SO the JLT Catch Can is great HOWEVER!!! There needs to be 2 cans NOT - 1 - So if you look at the drivers side there is yet another PCV from the crank case to the intake.... Yep if you only install ONE 1 Can then you have only fixed half the story.... So 2 cans needs to be installed one for the left side of the motor and one for the right side of the motor... I have a 2021 Eco boost 3.5 turbo and thus it needs 2 to do the job...
Think about it there are vents on each side of the motor and they both feed into the air intake and thus will be blowing oil into the engine from the drivers side if you only install onto the right side.

Well it's a good thing on the 2021 f150 they have not just a Kevlar reinforced rubber belt on the oil pump...but the pump itself is a high flow oil pump that rivals aftermarket performance oil pumps. Stillen...the company that makes superchargers...asked ford when they were in development of a new supercharger kit if ford could put a better flowing oil pump on the 2021 4th gen coyote motor so it could handle the increased stress of forced induction. Since stillen is a big performance partner of ford...ford said why not? And did so. The other benefits of the higher flowing oil pump is the lifters get plenty of oil at low rpm...which was a big issue with gm and ram trucks with cylinder deactivation. So hopefully with this improvement...the 4th gen 5.0L with cylinder deactivation will not suffer the same fate as the gm and ram trucks.

      @Prestiged_peck 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@karlschauff7989 to my knowledge the biggest issue with ford motors nowadays (and since about 2010) is that their OEM oil is literal garbage, all of the genes that I know of that are dealer serviced are having issues, all the guys doing their own services (that I know personally) are not having these issues, the only thing that changes afaik is the quality of oil/filters they use. (Yes motorcraft oil is API but they don't tell you it's within half a percent of the bare minimum in most categories, and they don't meet specs like DEXOS, while many aftermarket oils like mobil 1 do) we're in west texas where EVERYTHING has to be severe service (if you want it to last) because of dust and extreme heat (and cold for a bit). I won't buy a Ram 1500 with the 5.2 liter gas V8, and now I won't buy a Ford F-150 gas V8 either. It doesn't matter if you can "hardly" notice it. If you notice it, I won't pay my hard earned scratch for it. The twin turbo V6 Ecoboost and PowerBoost engines are the best F-150 gas engines. The V6 diesel is also a good unit. The new Godzilla 7.3 liter V8 is the only Ford pickup gas V8 without cylinder cutoff, but it's only available on the F-250 and above; the diesel V8 does without cylinder cutoff, too. Ford doesn't look very customer friendly by ruining its 5.0 V8.

Hey, guys! Great video and definitely discussions worth having... being a Ford and GM fan, we all know what happened after GM offered cylinder deactivation. Hopefully Ford engineers figured things out, but time will tell.
My only quibble is about the part where you implied that Ford is hiding the feature. if you look at the 5.0’s description on the F150 build and price page, it’s very plainly there:
“This legendary available Ford V8 with 10-speed transmission delivers all the muscle you need plus a best-in-class maximum payload rating of 3,325 lbs. * Experience robust 400 horsepower and 410 lb.-ft. of torque, courtesy of twin independent variable cam timing (Ti-VCT), as well as the Ford port-fuel and direct-injection (PFDI) system with two injectors per cylinder - one in the air intake port, another inside the cylinder - to increase power. And new Variable Displacement Engine (VDE) technology allows the engine to shut off half of its cylinders when full power is not needed.”

Thanks for watching Michael! I see that you are correct. It is in the description now. Unfortunately I built my truck back in September and placed my order on October 2nd. At that time it was not on the build and price and many features were missing and pictures and descriptions were only partially available. In the video, I first said they were trying to hide it but then reeled that back in a little. They sure aren't making a big deal out of these changes or being very forward about it. Many people like yourself feel that these are pretty big changes so that was my main issue with the way they have handled it.

GM had huge problems with the 09-13 engines with AFM. There aren't nearly as many issues with the 2014+ engines. People hear stories about AFM problems and don't stop to think about just how many engines GM builds each and every year that has AFM or DFM. They easily sell over a million vehicles (trucks, full size SUV's, Camaros and Corvettes) with V8's and V6's that have AFM or DFM each and every year since 2014. There has to be at least 6 or 7 million of the newer AFM/DFM engines out there. Even if there's just a 1% failure rate, that's tens of thousands of engines that develop an issue and most of them show up at dealers. That's where the whole "I know a guy that works at a dealer and he's always fixing engines with AFM problems" -- yeah no shit shirlock your buddy works at a dealer where all those vehicles go to get things fixed under warranty and GM sells over a million vehicles with AFM each and every year. Imagine that.
Most of the time the reason cylinder deactivation systems have problems, it's because the owner goes 7500+ miles between oil changes. The same reason most AFM or DFM systems have issues is the same reason most people with a 5.0 or Ecoboost have cam phaser or timing chain problems. These newer engines don't tolerate dirty oil. All the tiny oil passages and screens get clogged up and cause a lifter to get stuck or a cam phaser to start to rattle.

I've looked at the system, they've got a fix for all the issues GM had, they actually added lubrication for the lifters when they added cylinder deactivation. The oil pump does concern me, but supposedly it's been tested to 1100 horsepower and stupid RPM at the same time to make sure it won't fail, and also they beefed up the piston rings to help stop blow by. As long as you're using good oils (no store brand conventional for the love of god... or ANYTHING not full synthetic) the gen4 should be just as durable as the gen3. That said if you treat it like crap, put the wrong oil in it, and run said oil longer than your should (the oil timer is designed for synthetic, so set it to like 30% if you insist on running conventionals, or 60% on blends)

Great video fellas. I just wanted to give my two cents. I am a master mechanic previously for Honda for several years, I worked for Dodge for several years and now for the last seven years I’ve worked for General Motors. Every one of these companies has done the cylinder deactivation technology on their motors and it’s caused major problems. The only one that’s done any justice is Honda. They beefed up their parts in 2013 and added technology that allows you to actually turn it off. General Motors has never addressed the issue since they introduced in 2007 into this very day the 5.3 L V8 it’s almost 100% failure rate by 150,000 miles. Camshaft, lifter issues, oil consumption, seals going bad all because of the cylinder deactivation. The repair is $2748. I do at least one or two a week.
It really bothers me that Ford put this awful technology into the 5.0 L V8. That was a great motor. Personally, I drive a Toyota tundra because it doesn’t have any of those ridiculous fuel saving so-called benefits and it’s never cost me a dime.

Now, I think in the F-150 this is a commuter only motor. You try to do a lot of towing with it and you'll most likely wear it out fast.
This is the motor you get if you just want a truck and will only use it as a commuter or a bed.

Shutting off the engine in motion is an issue because steering and braking get much more difficult, though I'm not sure about the electric assist power steering and how that would react to engine shutdown in motion, and also, an intentional engine shutdown in motion might consist of a person turning the key all the way back which locks the steering column, in general, shutting off the engine in motion isn't recommended for safety reasons, not really for the engine itself.

That’s what we are finding out. This may be a blessing.

Yeah the old oil pump was such a problem that Ford Performance crate engines wouldn't even use it. They would literally pull that pump off as soon as the engine assemblies showed up.

I didn’t know about the rubber belt driven oil pump when I bought my 2021 5.0 🤦🏼‍♂️.

Neither do all of the 3.0 Duramax owners. Theirs is inside the oil pan and requires a costly teardown every 150k miles.

Is it a preventive maintenance thing that the owner of the truck is required to do and come out of pocket?

I haven’t looked into to, but I’d imagine their is a service internal on the belt

Fixing to buy a 2021 f150 5.0 in the next few months. After the factory warranty, that cylinder deactivation will be deleted if available.

Maybe by then, they’ll be a kit to fix the oil pump belt issue as well.

Does this 'new' 5.0 version still have the 'Plasma Cylinder Liners'..... and do they, thus, still have oil consumption issues, or have they gone back to the iron cylinder liners?

Wow, a rubber oil pump belt. Is that to save money. A rubber belt will not last, wow, the repair bills 💵

Yeah if they would build it with good steel materials and spec at least 5w30 oil, I cant see why even minimal oil splash would not keep the chain alive for longer than a belt.

Putting the truck in manual mode, tow haul, and sport defeats cylinder deactivation. Luckily tuning is now available to completely deactivate cylinder deactivation.

Alabama Ford has at least 6 after market exhausts available.

I know that Town and Country has them for pre order. My exhaust video was about how to take a 15-20 exhaust system and make it work on a 21. We will be meeting up with Mitchell for a video collab soon so stay tuned!
