I have a 2013 F150 Super-crew with the 5.0 Coyote since new and have put just over 350,000 miles on it. Repairs in order are oil sensor at 80,000, transmission rebuild at 230,000, upper radiator hose at 250,000, timing cover gasket at 260,000 had water pump done at the same time, Cat #1 at 280,000, Cat #2 at 310,000 and just did the Degas bottle and bottle hose to thermostat hosing in the last 100 miles. I usually put in about 1.5 quarts of oil between 10,000 mile oil changes due to small leaks and some burn off (Pennzoil High Mileage Full Synth). This has without a doubt been one of the best vehicles I have ever owned.
R - Thanks for taking the time to share your experience! Sounds like you take great care of it.
Same here, I’m at 205k, mine has the tap but runs fine. Did yours tap as well?
@@Homnickmotorsports Only taps a little during warm up.
My 2013 5.0 f 150 has 305 thousand miles and had zero problems with it
Thunder - Thanks for sharing your experience!
Sometimes and only sometimes you get a really good one that last for 350000
BS! I just replaced a water pump at 127k.
@@citomp1240easy repair
I have the exact same gen. I'm at almost 200k. I wanna do performance mods like cams and boost, but I'm kinda sketched out by it being a high mileage
2016 F150 v8: 321,000 miles today, I've replaced the water pump, alternator, starter, cat converters, rebuilt transmission, and will replace leaky oil pan gasket tomorrow...Runs great!
R - Thanks for sharing your experience, this will certainly help future viewers.
Is yours a 10 speed?
@@crabbyscrappy It would be a 6 speed auto, as that was the only choice for 2016. In 2017, the 10 speed would first be offered.
@@MattDB2016 I like my 6 speed. 10 speeds are just too many gears for me, 6 is more simple
Funny we have all these emissions restrictions on foreign cars but here we have 5.0 liters still ..
2018 5.0 with 184k. Burns about 3/4 of a quart at 3k miles. Two di injectors and upper hose o ring have been my only problems. Had the tick since day one and it’s fine
Low - Thanks for sharing your experience. This will certainly help future viewes.
You ever tried Lucas?
2011 f150 with the 5.0. 182,000 miles on it and still kickin like a beast
C - Thanks for taking the time to share your experience!
Remember when you made that video on 5.0 Coyote Engine Problems? That was awesome.
S - Thanks for the feedback.
I have a 2013 FX4 with a 5.0 bought it new! A year ago I was going into Limp mode. I took it 2 3 different places. No one could figure out what it was. I finally took it to the dealer. It was the harness for the transmission. Forward fixed it for me. Is customer appreciation. I will always buy the 5.0
Jennifer - Thanks for sharing your experience! I'm glad they were able to figure it out and cover the costs!
I ordered a 2023 last year and I have about 14k miles on the clock so far but haven’t had any issues whatsoever and watching this video makes me nervous since I bought this truck for work.
Tachoss - We don't make these videos to scare, strictly to inform. So long as you maintain it properly, you should be completely fine!
I just bought a 23 myself.. going to whipple it.. maybe. Waiting to see some.miles on the ones whippled and how they last
I had a major coolant leak on my 2014 Mustang GT, replaced the O ring on the Y pipe, and replaced my two heater hoses, and it stopped leaking. Other than that I've had No problems with it at all as the third owner at 77,228 miles on it (oil changed every 4000 miles). Super reliable engine and I highly recommend it to those who want one.
G - Thanks for sharing your experience!
I have the 5.0 in my 12 mustang. 43k miles and had the “coyote tick” I changed from motor craft to amsoil and it’s been gone since.
P - Interesting. Did you ever get it checked out?
Good to know. Thank you for that tip of the day.👍🏻
@@8020Media it’s a common issue for the coyotes, it sounds like a typewriter clicking. Ford addressed it with a oil additive called “XL-17” but other than that they said it’s normal.
P - Thanks for taking the time to assist other viewers!
2013 ford xlt super crewcab with the 5.0 220,000 miles have had truck 7 yrs had a 123,000 miles on it when I bought it have replaced water pump starter breaks and rotors had a transmission recall but has been a great truck wouldn’t be scared to drive it any where out of state was a Chevy man my whole life ford won me over with the 5.0 coyote and went out and bought a 2019 g. T. Mustang I just love the 5.0 truly love it and wouldn’t buy anothe r chevy
D - Thanks for taking the time to share your experience!
I am possible on the verge of buying an F-150 5.0L after it is inspected by the dealers as it was a trade in and they haven’t done their inspection yet. Should I be worried about the transmission ? Engine problems ? What should I look out for before buying or should I stay away from it. For reference, the car has 130,000 miles and out the door price is about 24,000
D - All of the problems listed in the video should be inspected. Also, make sure it has all of the maintenance records, that's what it all comes down to!
What year?
@@fernandobriseno81642018
If it has the the 6R80 tranny plan on changing the oil lines since they tend to break towards the front. Watch Fordtechnakuloco videos on the F150. He pretty much hits up all the common issues. Otherwise a solid truck. Mine is 2012 5.0 4x4 with 230k miles. Only thing to fail was water pump around 200k miles, front bearing 225k, and seized caliper slide pins. Now I grease them at least once a year.
stay away unless u want a ticking experomental engine
My 2013 with 185k miles qualify right now for head removal I found out that valve is an issue
Never done it
But definitely would not pay 6k as local garage asked
I come back next year to confirm that I have finished the job 😅
M - Thanks for sharing your experience!
Think most of the 10 speed bad rap comes from it’s a learning transmission and a new 10 speed is a little funky until it is used for long enough for it to learn.
And sometimes they get it stuck in there program to be a race transmission lol
It’s an easy fix reset to relearn.
The early ones definitely had some drum problems and valve body problems.
Chris - Thanks for adding this insight!
From my understanding they've fixed the CDF drum issues since 8/23? Looking for someone to confirm that. And you're absolutely right. It's not abnormal for the 10 speed to be a bit rough when the vehicle is still new.
Oil consumption/spark knock/Tapping noise coming from the motor.
I have a 2017 Ford F-150 5.0 it has 148,000 miles on it right now. I think I’ve had it about one or two years already. I noticed when I run 5W 20 oil in it. It would consume oil and what I think what’s going on is it’s heating up and turning into vapor going into the combustion chamber. Causing carbon buildup on top of the pistons. Which in return causes spark knock.
When I run 5W 30 oil in it. There’s very little oil consumption. And it helps with the spark knock. Granted I had to do some other stuff as well. A computer reset(brains of the vehicle) Sea foam treatment, run higher octane fuel and be a little more aggressive on the throttle when taking off.
If you’re hearing a tapping noise coming from the motor check your throttle body. You’ll see that throttle body twitching. Don’t stick anything in there!
Taylor - This is great insight. Thanks for sharing your experience!
Ford changed the oil weight from 5W20 to 5W30
I have the 2012 ford f150 coyote with 155k on it. So far I changed the water pump, leaky coolant connections and the thermostat which I later found out that your better off buying from ford otherwise the fan kicks on as it’s sensitive to anything more than what the rating is from the ford stat. Aftermarket’s didn’t work out: I also swapped all the front end suspension parts costing me about 3k in just parts. I have the engine tick which doesn’t seem to be effecting the performance but makes me wonder if I’m just running out of time.
R - Thanks for taking the time to share your experience! Sounds like you take good care of it.
5w30 way to go!
L - Thanks for the insight.
2016 F150 5.0 385HP/387lb-ft stock, + maybe 5 HP in exhaust system modification. Bitchin' engine! Sometimes hear a tick at 2500 RPM only. Oil changes are at 5000 miles and using the factory Motorcraft Synthetic Blend, but in 5W-30 (not 20). Doesn't burn a drop, doesn't leak. Did have a IMRC problem three or four years ago where the intake manifold was replaced under warranty. That's about it. 65,000 miles and going strong. I do exercise it, too. The Coyote likes a little more RPM. Doesn't need a lot of throttle. Such a great design. Cheers.
A - Thanks for taking the time to share your experience!
2011-2014 not much wrong. 2015-2017 o-ring leak at Y. 2018-2020 terrible. 2021-2024 not sure yet haven't owned one but cylinder deactivation can't be good with other complex systems.
Mike - Completely agree. Thanks for adding this insight.
Gen 1 coyote can have connecting rod failure which can require a rebuild, fixed in gen 2 but pretty reliable overall.
A - Very true. Thanks for sharing this insight.
2015 GT. Had the brake stop pad crumble putting it in limp mode. And every so often get the "pre collision assist not available", "Hill Start Assist is not available". No idea whats causing it.
B - Thanks for sharing your experience!
I have 2019 ram 1500 classic with hemi no etorqe and I’m keeping forever my next truck is a f150 what’s your opinion on a 2023-2024 with 5.0 I don’t really want turbo.
M - Nice! Can't go wrong with Ram's. Also, can't go wrong with the 5.0s.
I have a 2018 Mustang GT convertible that developed no compression in cylinder 1 last week. Not sure if it's ring, valve or gasket related. Only have 67500 miles on it.
J - Sorry to hear! Keep us updated.
@8020Media Ford is donating 8k towards a long block repair. Essentially a new engine sans accessories - those will be pulled from my existing engine. I'm out just over 5k but a new oil pan, block, pistons, crank, rods, heads and valve covers ain't too shabby. Hopefully I'll have it back Monday. The hardest part will be another break in period 😉. I am so looking forward to a top-down drive!
J - Glad to hear they're contributing something at least! Keep us updated.
My 2018 F150 5.0 is back in the shop for another engine. This is engine number four not bad!😂
Ford told me they were back ordered. Now I know why, you got them all!
@@christopherrichards1025 yes my friend it’s been a crazy ride!
Ken - Sorry to hear about yours in the shop. What's happened to all of the other 5.0's?
@@8020Media oil consumption on 3 of them if they were driven 5,000 miles there would not be any oil left on the dipstick. Then this last one was misfiring on 2 and 8 and randomly misfiring on all the other cylinders with about two quarts of oil loss at about 4500 miles.
Ken - Sounds like you've had a tough time with these... Thanks for taking the time to write this out. This will help future viewers.
i have a 2015 5.0 with 152k miles, it just started using about 5 quarts of oil in 5k miles but before the oil issue it was needing coolant about every service oil change. Any thoughts?
C - Did you let them know that during your service? Could be small leaks.
sell that junk. i hated to sell my 18 stang 5.0 after saving up for years. what a joke ford is
love the video, liked and subd
F - Thanks for the feedback! Hope it helped.
I own a 2016 Roush II, with a Coyote 5.0 engine. At 72,000 miles, the engine had to be replaced due to the cam lobes being defective. Now with only a few thousand miles, it's back in the shop showing an engine code of coils and plugs. I'm done with FORD
S - So sorry to hear this. However, we appreciate you taking the time to share your experience!
You should do the newest problem with the coyote TSB. 232194. Oh it’s a defect in the block where the oil filter housing bracket meets the block. I guess that part of the block is leaking. It’s porous August 23, 2022 to April 30 23. models. I have a F150 I just bought that was manufactured July and I’m having a leak in that area now they’re saying it’s just a gasket. I’m hoping it’s not that block issue. and they’re trying to dodge the bullet from doing all that work or reimbursing me.
David - We have heard of this just recently. Thanks for adding this insight! Keep us updated with your F150!
Yes I will thank you I called ford on the phone with them for an hour. Give them all the info that I gathered.
Update. the gasket on the bracket for the oil filter was pinched so far there is no leaks this is day number 2 but I am still wary. I hope somebody can come out with a detail on what blocks were made with this defect it would be good to be able to track it down by Vin or serial number. for Peace of mind
David - Thanks for providing this update and keeping everyone in the loop. We completely agree.
I have a 14 f150 5.0 89k miles replaced both heads because of valve issues, 160k and I think I’m having the same issue on cyl 4? Any recommendations for my truck? I have an appt with my ford tech on the 14th of January
A - That doesn't sound fun.. It's quite difficult to diagnose over comments, but we hope they can figure it out for you. Keep us updated!
The oil consumption happens to all Coyote engines, There is no baffle in the valve cover where the Pcv goes, The gt500 valve cover has the baffles and will fit the Coyote , problem solved
M - Thanks for the insight.
ticking is still happening in the 2024 model ..my 2024 gt ticking started at 1090 miles before any oil change was done
MV - Unfortunately it is..
Add one bottle of quick molly ceratec oil additive every oil change and it will be completley gone. Once you try it you won't go back trust me.
I have a 2012 F-150 Lariat 4x4 5.0 8cyl with 144,000 miles. I have been using 5w-20, but since the truck is 11 years old, should I try 5w-30 oil on my next oil change?
At those mileage levels and age I wouldn't be too concerned. If you're in a hot climate 5w-30 should be fine, it'll provide a little extra lubrication at the sacrifice of flow. We usually just stick with what the manufacturer recommends but going up by 10 shouldn't be a problem either. Might get slightly worse gas mileage with it tho, but nothing super noticeable.
@@8020Media I probably will stick with 5w-20 because my truck is running good.
Thankfully it sounds like the oil consumption issue has been fixed at least. A lot of the ticking complaints are people just hearing the noisy high pressure fuel system. But theres that infamous " type writer tick" some people get that ford seems to say is " normal" but it sure as heck doesnt sound normal. All and all im less concerned about the engine issues more so the extremely unreliable 10 speed.
Yeah the injectors on any direct injected vehicle will make some ticking that people aren't aware of if they haven't had a DI vehicle before - all of our BMWs get it of course. But for sure, these engines are proving to be very reliable, the 10spds not so much
I had the “coyote tick” on my 12 5.0 mustang. Changed to amsoil and it’s gone.
P - Thanks for sharing your experience.
Valve wear issues are starting to arise, causing no code misfires,( compression test ) will find the bad valves, the typewriter tick is the shim placed in the engine to adjust thrust bearing
M - Thanks for taking the time to share this insight! We've been seeing this too..
Direct injection on 18-20 is only high demand and not at idle, normal drive is still port injection primary, direct secondary
K - Thanks for sharing this insight.
You know it's interesting to me I'm running an older variant I'm running to 2012 Boss when I look up the known issues from Ford tech service bulletins TSB's I find it very interesting it'll start naming the issues and it'll say in parentheses except for Boss 302, I mean seriously look it up for yourself it's very interesting there's no typewriter click there's no this there's no that there's no oil consumption there's no and it's flawless so I look at these two engines what's the difference? Obviously different rides different Pistons cheaper ring pack we have an engine that's more mass-produced versus the boss which has 4030 forged wl12percent silicone mahle Pistons, sinter forged rods, it has much better metallurgy in the material for the cylinder heads, other than that I don't see any other difference I mean the the typewriter clacking I had that in a 6.4 l diesel some of that is just noises that don't really mean much but they they sound bad when they get through resonating through the block, but the boss has none of the issues that the coyote has and they're the same engine minus internals???
Robert - Thanks for taking the time to write out this insight! It is very interesting indeed.
Hi I have a 2016 F150 5.0 and it now started stalling while coming to a stop. While is running is fine but if I come to a stop it stalls. No check engine light? Any ideas? The dealership says it might be the intake manifold.
Ivan - We have a video covering engine stalls specifically: th-cam.com/video/7bqAIbYRdnc/w-d-xo.html
Hopefully it helps!
@@8020Media thank you
Look at replacing the Throttle Body. Had a similar issue and that fixed it. The electronics would send the ECM bad commands and it would shut off the engine
J - Thanks for sharing your insight and experience! This will surely help future viewers.
I’m almost 100% sure it’s the Vct solenoids. I have a 2016 5.0 that was doing the same with no codes. After alot of research I found out that the Vct solenoids are a common issue. Changed them and haven’t had the problem since. That was a year ago.
is that a 135i I see there?
A - That it is!
Common problem you did not talk about. Soft intake valves that tulip 2012 only 107.000 miles total disappointment in this truck.
V - Thanks for sharing!
The oil issue is because of spray on ceramatic coating on cylinders instesd of steel sleeves. Bad idea, i have 012 with 320,000 kms and doesnt use any oil.
D - Thanks for this insight.
Such a bad idea but most of them are using the spray on cylinders now. It's harder than the cast iron liners. The newer ones will wear out the pistons and rings long before the cylinder walls wear out.
Do some research on the fourth Explorer st 3.0 leader
F - What? We have this video: th-cam.com/video/1WUg10390Us/w-d-xo.html
Hell the zo6 vett motor and a kot of the ls motors had piston slap.. they all have issues.
I just bought a 2023 f150.. we'll see how it goes.
Chevy and dodge has the worse transmissions of them all.
J - Thanks for sharing your experience. It should treat you well.
@@8020Media I've owned and driven them all.. Ford just works better for me. My 97 f150 has 320,000 miles on it and runs great! Original motor and transmission!
Tick is bad follower #8 cylinder... Ive seen it in the head, follower replaced, tick gone....
P - Thanks for sharing this!
I got a 58 VW speed odometer is broke you guess still runs hard
A - Thanks for sharing.
I can’t believe the American Manufacturers can’t make engines or transmission any more , since-we get into this Digital World the problems seems endless
G - Because people can openly share their experiences via the internet. It's a blessing and a curse. But they certainly don't make them like they used to regardless.
Why do all of these engines have blowby and the need for a catch can ?
G - An unfortunate cause of direct injection.
Port injected coyotes (gen1/2) also have blow by
Z - Not near as much as DI
@@8020Media yeah true, the oil catch cans in gen1/2 usually needed on the passenger side PCV whereas 2018+ both passenger and driver sides
I haven't ever had a coyote , but aren't them the same problems all makes are having with the v8 vehicles ? Not that I would buy anything but a v8 , but that's just me ..eeerr, that's my normal train of thinking
Mike - Yes, to an extent. Many issues encountered with V8 engines, including the Coyote, can be similar across different makes and models. However, they are still very reliable engines.
Know too many people with problems with these engines. Oil consumption is the most common.
R - Yep! Thanks for sharing your experience.
They all have oil consumption problems. Thin, low tension rings. Oil rings that get plugged up with sludge. The latest engine oils address that problem
So what is ticking , everyone talks about the tick but nobody says what it is !….
T - According to Ford, it is caused by normal interaction of the oil with the bearings, block, caps and rods.
I'd like my time back.
T - Thanks for watching
The ticking is caused by not using 93 octane fuel……
Not necessarily..
So is it knock or a tick? 93 octane helped with your tick on the 5.0L? Interesting for sure but thanks for your fix on the problem. 👍🏻
Why 7.3 Godzilla engine came out for Ford...which also has its own problems now actually but simplicity not being one of those being a push rod. Simply too much being demanded of these low displacement engines. Better off with a diesel and this is why. Everyone getting a lesson now with the Toyota catastrophe now well underway. Greed destroyed all of this in particular safety as usual as well #too_much_electrical
D - They certainly don't make them like they used to.
I'm trying to learn about the 5.0s cus my cousin claims that they are better then LS's
G - It depends what he means by "better". What metric is he referencing that it is better. Both engines are solid!
Why is it called coyote? Ford doesn't call it that?
C - Idk what to tell you if you've never heard of the 5.0 coyote engine.
It’s Fords project, they give all their engine projects a code name. And the 5.0 was called the Coyote
Bingo
Every engine has its problems also grow a beard and have a close shave you would look really good
T - Agreed. And thanks for the kind words.
Thanks for wasting my time. Everything you mentioned can run across all brands. 👎🏻
J - Sorry you feel that way. Yes, because a lot of engines have the same problems? Not sure what you want us to say here..
You can thank the government for destroying the Coyote reliability.
CJ - Unfortunately. A lot of engines/vehicles aren't built like they used to be.
