I have a feeling that not only Megascans but Sketchfab and perhaps others they own will, sooner or later, not be available "forever." That's why I'm adding 12 Terabytes to the computer and spending the next three months downloading into my hard drive everything that I think I may need over the years to come.

NGL in my experience I got into UE5 (the last time I'd used it was UE1 I think lol) BECAUSE there was a MASSIVE, FREE, HIGH QUALITY POOL OF RESOURCES. Can't imagine I would have made that switch from Unity without Megascans being available. They should really reconsider, at least having the lower quality or older assets be freely available.

As a solo indie, I can assure you that I am not buying a bunch of rocks for 25 bucks, no matter the "justification" brought up for megascan. I understand the justification is that they want money, but taking away an already acquired service/product and cement it behind a paywall has never proven itself to be a viable strategy.

I don't agree with Megascans being a "competitor" to other artists selling their assets on FAB. Megascans being free was actually one of the main reasons why so many people are using it. Bodycam, for example, was made by students, and I don't think a lot of students have that much money to spend on a few hundred assets. Having the library that is already there for free and then charging for the new ones that they add regularly would be an ideal situation, but realistically, it won't happen, lol. Thanks for the breakdown, Sensei.

Whilst I can see the benefit of getting their assets for free, I'm not seeing why solo developers and small teams *need* to use Megascans. If you are producing something with the production values that demand the quality of Megascans assets, $100-$500 for some Megascans packs is going to be a tiny percentage of what you need to spend. If it's going to discourage you, yes, you should be discouraged from using Megascans, because chances are, you're not spending the money to properly optimise your scenes after you dump a ton of highly detailed assets in there, and you're not spending the money to make your bespoke models, animations, effects to the same quality level.

Eh, I have the gut feeling that, considering how taking away something from people breeds animosity, this may just be a move to force a huge wave of sign-ups to FAB upon launch. Obviously I can't see the future, but I think there is a very realistic chance that once we get to 2025 Epic will suddenly have a change of heart and revise the policy, or at least amend it so that people continue to join for the benefit of free assets, just like they've done all along. It makes no sense to give everything away for free for several months, this is not a consumer marketplace, but mostly people who - whether as pros or hobbyists - are aware of this change and will sign up and take all the free stuff while it is available.
Again, I could be totally wrong - but that's precisely the point. I'll sign up asap, and grab anything that looks even remotely useful to me - just in case. And so will probably everybody else - so by 2025, everyone will be on FAB, and Epic will be all "Mission Accomplished".

I think your reasoning why assets will no longer be free is correct.
If Fab is supposed to be a commercial marketplace it makes totally sense.
Basically it's a pivot from trying to promote Unreal Engine to operating Fab as an asset marketplace that can generate revenue for both Epic Games and artists.
For artists this is great news.
The fact that Epic announced this beforehand is commendable. This is the way.

Great insight on why you think Epic Games is choosing to charge for Megascans after 2024. I agree with you. It seems like a wise decision to level the playing field by making FAB an attractive market for asset creators, without the steep competition from a massive free Megascans library.

So anything that I manage to purchase / download for free in that timeframe (October-2025) I could keep and use them without needing to pay ? Or will it suddenly start charging me 😂

Mhhh I mean I don't even use Unreal Engine (I just like watching these videos lmao) but these Megascans are really high quality and require a lot of work. People actually need to go out and scan real physical objects. That's a lot of work and that work isn't free so ngl, I think it's justified. Also $14,000 surely is a lot of money for one person, but...considering that that's apparently the price for ALL Megascan assets...if I imagine how you could probably build an entire AAA game with this, this really doesn't seem like THAT much relatively speaking. Plus if you're a small indie dev you'll never need all assets anyway. What they could do is they could offer a free trial version to get people into using UE for their projects.
