Can you speak to how well or poorly the tablet performs when using art/design apps like Photoshop Express, Infinite Painter, or Sketchbook? These apps have free trial versions on the play store. I am interested in it for art/design, but a little concerned about the screen and processing power with it being just 1.2 ghz.

I own the 9.7 with s pen and I'm an artist and use it strictly for drawing and I have absolutely no complaints about it. For the budget, it's more than just an average tablet. I'm not a samsung mark but most of my items are Samsung brand. For the price it's definitely worth it.
I got this for my mom, she loves it and tells me all the time that she is amazed with it. I doubt she would see any real difference with the ipad and for the price, it was a good buy.
Why didn't you discuss the inclusion of the Microsoft Office suite as a free gift from Samsung, plus 100GG of free cloud storage on MS One Drive? I believe these productiivity additions are super important to many tablet owners. We would all like to see wireless charging/adaptive fast charging on tablets, not just phones. 1080p would be nice, if it could be done at the same price point. Also, you should have downloaded Kids Mode in the Galaxy app store and tested that too. Perhaps a part 2 is in order, once you have spent more time with this tablet. The value proposition seems quite high.

Ika Nelam Sari yes i agree, i like the different models for someone who doesn't need / want the premium features. i was just complaining because i really like this tablet but i wish it was available in an S version with the S pen software. In a way, i was trying to say i am jealous because i prefer the S line because of AMOLED screen but i dont have an option to install S pen software. I would love an update to the Note 2014 edition and this tablet looks like it software wise but not super amoled screen style. For now, i will keep wishing and waiting. 😊☺
I think the tab S refers to the galaxy series S which doesn't use S pen. Maybe, tab S is a high end level so it's using AMOLED screen. Different from Tab A, cause of it's an entry level tab so it's using TFT screen. But I agree with you, I'm so jealous with the S line. I prefer if tab A uses IPS screen rather than TFT. he he

I had this in 2017 I had a few problem with it 1. after two years it was lagging so much and its gaming perfomance was getting terrible to worst 2. its brightness was like gone for 1 minutes and and came back again. This keep on happening after every 30 minutes 3. When it freezes it like turn off instantly and when I press the power switch it does not turn on. After that I leave it for a few seconds and start up again. I hope you can understand :(
I recieved it as a gift last night so I haven't like used it I wanted to do my DJ and print video if I don't want to use my dslr or for just live streaming would u recommend it just for those purposes ? @djant863
I don't own one but got to play with the 8" version: The screen is simply unacceptable. Text is definitely difficult to read, and images appear "fuzzy". Just not up to par even for a semi-budget (It is not that inexpensive!) tablet, ok otherwise, but on a tablet, a mediocre screen is the kiss of death. Had this been a 1280x800 variant (yeah, the 4:3 ratio), this could have been very decent...but it is not. Best $200 budget tablet for 2015? Samsung's own 2014 Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4, which can be readily found for $199.95. For less money than the Tab A 8, it buries the tab a in every important category. Often, it is a better strategy when on a budget to buy last year's quality tablet, usually discounted steeply, than this year's low-end model.

Costco has a deal fro 32MB version with case for $249 thru May 29 2016. You can check the screen resolution in the store to see if you like it before buying.
Leaith Friends They are both pretty similar. The Tab 4 has a slightly better screen, but the TAB A has more ram, longer battery life and better camera specs. I'd probably still lean towards the TAB A unless you can get a really good deal on the Tab 4.

problem with this when using facebook apps, image cannot load the original file size, tried with ipad works good with same image, too pixelated, no idea if facebook, android or samsung has a problem
I bought mine off of Amazon a couple of weeks ago. I bought it for school purposes which helped that it had Microsoft Word. I am on Facebook a lot and that is where I noticed the 4:3 aspect ratio changing the view of the auto play video. the sides of the videos are cut off and forces you to click the video to see the full picture. it got annoying. everything else is great as far as the price goes. bad thing is mine would not pick up the full speed of my wifi and I end up having to return it which as been a hassle in itself. other than that, I would recommend it for anyone on a budget.

16.9 is good for video, but if you want to take notes, 4:3 is way better IMHO. I currently have the note 10.1 and surface pro 4. the note has a 16:10 ratio, SP4 a 3:2 ratio. I think a 4:3 is best for note taking, but the 3:2 is a nice balance between 16:9 or 10.
I actually like the 4:3 for some reasons, and like the s pen, but Samsung has absolutely pissed me off with the tablets they've realised this year. either you buy the tab A with mediocre hardware and an absolutely horrible, no scratch that, an UNACCEPTABLE screen resolution for 2015. or you buy the tab s 2 but that has no s pen. why can't they get it right? I bought the tab a 9.7 for my mother at Christmas. Initially she was thrilled and loved the s pen features. Within a few days streaming video from any source constantly buffers. I cleared up cache which helped for a day.. and then it's constantly buffering again.

I need a cheap tablet for running Planning Center Online Music Stand. My church band uses it... Great program. The music is done in pdf and you get chord charts with lyrics. It can page turn by swiping left or if you really want to get down and funky, you can buy a blue tooth enabled footswitch to change pages. The big question is if I need an 8 inch or 10 inches. The PDF chord charts are not complicated. The chord is listed above the lyric... I like the ability to make it zoom or shrink with a gesture... Anyone have any comments or ideas?
i was thinking of getting this tablet because of the size but the screen resolution is a concern... i would be using it mainly for typing on microsoft word or google docs (along with some web browsing, watching some videos, playing some games, etc.) so that I wouldn't have to carry my laptop everywhere- i have a macbook air, but with books and everything, lugging it around all day gets heavy.. but after giving it some thought, maybe spending money on a tablet wouldn't be worth it (how are tablets meant to be used, anyway?)- would sticking to my laptop be easier? or are there any other tablets that would be better (not looking for an iPad) and easier to carry around? thanks!! :)
The surface pro seems to be what you're looking for. A little heavier than a tablet but not as heavy as a laptop and you get the full power of a laptop.

I bought one yesterday. Speed is very fast with no glitches. I'm not too crazy about the picture quality. Not great but acceptable. I have Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 that I bought several years ago that have better picture quality. Reason why I decided to get the Tab A was due to speed. My old Tab 2 is really slow compare to my A. with my limited budget I decided to sacrifice picture quality for speed.

Matthew Moniz the kindle fire hdx 7 is also better than the samsung galaxy tab a 8.0 with world's better performance, and a lower price. The only downfall of the tablet is the fire os, which is inferior to all the other android skins.
I got a GTA a few weeks ago cuz tmobile was giving away the 8" model. it's perfect for netflix, and some mobile gaming, and navigation. that's pretty much all I use it for.
The display is sad and I was shocked to hear it's so expensive until I found out its got a stylus which usually raises the price of any tablet about $100 alone.
I have the Tab A 9.7 without the stylus, it is great I wouldn't' agree with you about what you said for reading, everyone has their own taste. I would only prefer if the side bezels were slightly thicker
returned the tablet that I purchased , I was surprised because it had really good reviews but it was extremely pixelated and as I browsed the internet some of the the text would blur, not sure if that's a feature but the graphics were very inconsistent, the orientation took ages, and the Icon buttons on the tablet did not light up so I couldn't really srr what I was pressing in the dark, was very disappointed

I had it for 4 years and the tablet fell once on the ground and cracked and stopped working
I have it for 4 years it only has a scratch but its not noticeable
update: I stopped using it bc the battery died so fast even when i wasn't using it. it went down 1% a minute and became slow

picked up the 9.7 for Christmas marathon like battery life love it i won't be shopping for another tab for a least two years
I never had a high end tablet, but the screen on this tablet is horrible if you watch TH-cam or movies. Internet reading is ok.

+erswed I agree the screen resolution could be much better, but it's a fairly cheap tablet aimed at families or small business owners who need the spen functionalty. Apple & Samsung copy each other. I Bought This Tablet On Black Friday, And Got It For Christmas, Once I Opened It For Christmas, The Touch Doesnt Want To Work I Have To Press The Options Twice In Order For The Tablet To Select It, Also Everytime I Type Something The Text Doesnt Show Up On The Bar, and i bought it brand new, what could be wrong??
Weird! Sorry to hear you're already having a bad experience. Try factory resetting the tablet.
I'm using it to this time and after all those years it's working like shit, very slow. But when it came out it was great

I bought the tab a 9.7 for my mother at Christmas. Initially she was thrilled and loved the s pen features. Within a few days streaming video from any source constantly buffers. I cleared up cache which helped for a day.. and then it's constantly buffering again.
What are the buttons behind for? Are they even buttons? Why am I watching this video with a Samsung Galaxy Tab A? Why am I pressing the "buttons" behind? Why do I have so many questions?

I need a cheap tablet for running Planning Center Online Music Stand. My church band uses it... Great program. The music is done in pdf and you get chord charts with lyrics. It can page turn by swiping left or if you really want to get down and funky, you can buy a blue tooth enabled footswitch to change pages. The big question is if I need an 8 inch or 10 inches. The PDF chord charts are not complicated. The chord is listed above the lyric... I like the ability to make it zoom or shrink with a gesture... Anyone have any comments or ideas?
The 10 inch display will be easier to read. Other than the size of the display, I don't think there is much difference between the 8" and 10" models.
i was thinking of getting this tablet because of the size but the screen resolution is a concern... i would be using it mainly for typing on microsoft word or google docs (along with some web browsing, watching some videos, playing some games, etc.) so that I wouldn't have to carry my laptop everywhere- i have a macbook air, but with books and everything, lugging it around all day gets heavy..
but after giving it some thought, maybe spending money on a tablet wouldn't be worth it (how are tablets meant to be used, anyway?)- would sticking to my laptop be easier? or are there any other tablets that would be better (not looking for an iPad) and easier to carry around? thanks!! :)
The surface pro seems to be what you're looking for. A little heavier than a tablet but not as heavy as a laptop and you get the full power of a laptop.

I bought one yesterday. Speed is very fast with no glitches. I'm not too crazy about the picture quality. Not great but acceptable. I have Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 that I bought several years ago that have better picture quality. Reason why I decided to get the Tab A was due to speed. My old Tab 2 is really slow compare to my A. with my limited budget I decided to sacrifice picture quality for speed.

Matthew Moniz the kindle fire hdx 7 is also better than the samsung galaxy tab a 8.0 with world's better performance, and a lower price. The only downfall of the tablet is the fire os, which is inferior to all the other android skins.

The display is sad and I was shocked to hear it's so expensive until I found out its got a stylus which usually raises the price of any tablet about $100 alone.
Len Harms I agree the display is brutal! The tablet runs well and the stylus is nice to have. It's really just to bad about the display.

I have the Tab A 9.7 without the stylus, it is great I wouldn't' agree with you about what you said for reading, everyone has their own taste. I would only prefer if the side bezels were slightly thicker
returned the tablet that I purchased , I was surprised because it had really good reviews but it was extremely pixelated and as I browsed the internet some of the the text would blur, not sure if that's a feature but the graphics were very inconsistent, the orientation took ages, and the Icon buttons on the tablet did not light up so I couldn't really srr what I was pressing in the dark, was very disappointed
