    I know it can be a struggle. I am 48 and very active and try to eat close to the same foods everyday. Just works for me at this age but took a bit to dial in. “Simple calorie math” seems simple but can take time to adjust to. You got this!

    I’m in the same boat, brother. 42yo, 6’ and 215lbs , 4 kids in different sports and programs, a wife, 4 pets, an acreage, 48-60hr work weeks.
    I went with a seasonal approach for my health as a big runner. I train for 4 races a during the spring, summer, and fall months which is a 70:30 running to strength ratio. I’m healthier and get better ultra race results running less volume than most coaches recommend. Come winter that flips to a 20:80 ratio in favor of strength.
    Reasons?
    We’re big dudes and our bodies prefer to be strong. I feel better energy and libido when I add the muscle back on. The strength focus also gets me ready for the beating my big-ass body takes in the race season. It’s a protective husk that gets gradually chiseled away but ultimately keeps me healthy and injury free.
    Also, lifting is more accessible and less time consuming. I do it in my basement or in a spare office at during lunch hour at work, so there’s no prep or travel time involved. I get back time to spend with my fam and accomplishing chores around the acreage.
    Anyways, love the content and the discussion cues it provides for us regular everyday dudes trying to figure out our own puzzles.

    Im about your build. Im at 202. Last year i dropped weight by fasting. Got down to 189 for the first time since high school--im 51 now. Ive been lazy and haven't been MOVING. Lots of sitting around eating. Anyway, got out the door for a 5 k yesterday for the first time in months. Felt great. Hoping i can find some consistency. Good luck!!

    Nutrition/diet is such a large driver to weight loss. If you haven’t, consistently tracking macros could help. Would be fun to see a What You Eat in a Day on the channel on a long run training day. Excited to follow the journey! Good luck!

      You are absolutely correct, the only time I have been successful in meeting weight loss goals is when tracking macros…great idea!

    I've been a runner for over 30 years. I was always about 20 lbs over weight. I'm 5'9" and could never get under 185. Most of the time, I was around 190 lbs. About 3 years ago, I started incorporating walking using a weight vest. I worked up to 40 lbs just walking without running while wearing it. Right now I'm at 170. That is a good weight for me. Now I have to work at keeping my weight up. I mix up the running with walking with the vest. I would say milage wise I'm about 60/40 running and walking with the vest. I'm not an ultra racer but my daughter is and I do pace my daughter on 100 milers. I think it has really helped make me stronger on the more technical terrain. I walk as fast as I can while wearing it and try to incorporate hills. After seeing the results
    My wife started using the vest rather than running and she also lost a lot of weight. Like I said I'm not an ultra racer but walking with the vest and running has been the ticket for me. I enjoy your channel. Keep up the good work.

    Same boat. Older, taller and fatter then where you're at, so this hits close to home.
    Been on my own journey, and just too damn stubborn to look at anything where anyone else but me can help. Part of my mindset (that obvi needs work as well.) We're all individual in how our bodies process, so it's a puzzle that's different for all of us. I know it's nutrition. I know it's mindset, but still not doing what I know is right and best.
    Here's to hoping you solve your puzzle!! You're not alone bro!

    This may be extreme but im 49band have been running for 20+ years. I always struggled with weight loss and fluctuating from 188-200lb. I moved from the US to Philippines and have lost 12 kg. (Metric system here) I stopped tracking and ate what filipinos eat pretty much no American type foods. I stopped worrying about thevweight and focused more on running goals. I think the consistency in weather (hot and humid) helps too. The 4 seasons in the states I think can hamper weight loss and all the holidays. You got this man. By the way im tackling my first ultra this year, the Cordillera Mountain 50k in November. Love your content and keep it up. Heres some advice. Instead of putting too much emphasis on weight loss, focus on how you want to look.

      Yeah, I hear than the typical "American Diet" looks different than many other countries. Focusing on eating more clean and in the correct portion helps for sure. Best of luck on your first ultra, let me know how training and the race goes!

    I completely understand where your coming from. At 55 taking off a few the pounds and maintaining a high fitness feels almost impossible at times. I also struggle with getting up early on my days off getting up hours before my wife to get the long runs in. Lately been trying to mix in doing body weight exercises and stretching during my work day which is helping with core strength and helps clear the mind. Sometimes adding a couple small changes can make a huge difference.

    • @motivationtheoryrunning
      @motivationtheoryrunning  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Absolutely, small changes help get that momentum going for sure…it’s tough but getting started and on a routine is the part that is the tipping point.

  • @Second2LastPioneer
    @Second2LastPioneer 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Absolutely! Strength training has made all the difference for me. That is where you shape your body. Certainly calorie intake has a great affect, but the weight creep of sarcopenia is real. Especially after 40. You have to lift heavy to get those muscles to keep their strength. It's a whole other journey. Also, it's good to learn the difference between weight gain and muscle gain. If you feel pudgy or weak strength training is for you. If it's just a number that bothers you, you'll have to learn that gaining weight comes with gaining muscle, but that muscle can get you faster, endure longer and prevent injuries. So YEAH, big fan! So many runners turn to strength training for the benefit of not just their bodies, but their minds too. Anyways! WOOHOO! YEAH! 🙌🤩

    I’m 41 and have lost 73 lbs over the last 8 months. . I’ve learned the hard way that exercise doesn’t really matter as much as diet. You have to track everything that you eat. It needs to be weighed. My fitness pal is a free app that I use to track what I eat. My goal is 1500 cals each day. The added exercise will help to loose more weight quicker. I also meal prep 3-4 days out. Oh and it’s a struggle but I look at it as training. You got this bro.

    • @amblincork
      @amblincork 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      No food doesnt have to be tracked or weighed . Weight loss depands on the kinds of food we eat more than the volume. Dont eat anyhtong with sugar and ir artifical sweeners and with white flour - ideally for a perios dont eat any breads at all.

    • @definit1on119
      @definit1on119 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yea that’s bad advice. It’s calories in versus calories out. Bread is a stable of my diet and I’ve still managed to loose between 2-3 lbs per week. Don’t make it harder the. It has to be.

    • @amblincork
      @amblincork 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@definit1on119 LOL !! You are the guy who has to track and weight everything you eat so it looks like to me you are the guy who is doing it the hard way !! I have come home and had a quick bowl of porridge before I cook something for dinner and I can snack like that whenever I feel like and still lose weight..the Lenten period before Easter is one of the two periods I go off all sugar products and breads. I have had two injury issues for several months so I am not running right now but still I am losing weight and am not going hungry. Eating bread is a habit so find something else - as I states in another post, I eat a lot of brown pasta and that doesnt seem to matter. It is not normal to have to weigh food and of you are losing 2 - 3 lbs a week,,, then that is because you allowed yourself accumulate that much surplus weight.

    Losing weight and keeping it off is definatly hard work. Only excersizes are a very small part of the weight loss. I only started losing weight when I changed my diet radicaly. It's not the calories that is the problem, it are the carbohydrates. The moment I switched to full KETO I started losing weight 900grams a week, with hardly any excersize. I am now doing Carnivore, and it is the most simple way of eating, with lots of energy, building musscle mass, and losing/maintaning weight. Keto/carnivore is a very healthy way of eating, you can spend more time with the family instead of being in the gym all the time 😃 God bless you!!

    • @motivationtheoryrunning
      @motivationtheoryrunning  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would probably still be running all the time, it would just be at a lighter weight ...lol. I have read and watched so much about KETO and that its not heart healthy over time, but good at dropping weight. I have never tried it for that reason. I love a good steak!

I'm in your age range, some of this may be middle age metabolism. I put weight on as well even with higher mileage. I'm not saying it's easy. I had to cut other things out of my diet (e.g. alcohol).

    This is a good topic. I wonder if it's difficult to drop weight because as we lose muscle mass due to aging do we have to cut back on calories to avoid putting on bulk. Maybe it's not calories but quality of calories?

    • @motivationtheoryrunning
      @motivationtheoryrunning  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Probably part of it too...but i know working on higher intensity exercises with strength training is supposed to help. ..and a clean diet.

    • @amblincork
      @amblincork 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I am 67 and I definitely havent lost much muscle mass and my preferred runiing is marathons on mountains and trails but I also like 5 km road races to help me keep pace - my current 5 km pb is 20.06 done last year as a 66 yr old. I can esily lose weight by changing what foods I eat - when I avoid foods with sugar I lose weight.

  • @amblincork
    @amblincork 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Twice a year, I dont eat any food with sugar and or artificial sweetners and flour - other than brown pasta - and I lose significant weight in a month. If these pweiods coincide with marathon training periods - on trails or hills - then I use fruit like bananas and satsumas and microwaved potatoes instead of gels and sports drinks and these substitutes do me for long runs of 3, 4 and 5 hours. The liquids I will drink are tea and water. If you are a family person then it may be harder to stick withh that food plan of course. But I dont cut down the volume of food I eat and I may even eat more by volume but I still lose weight. I am one of those people who are sensitive to sugar and have a tendency to over eat foods with sugar and so I increase in weight even when running realtively high mileage. I can eat plently of foods such as potatoes, brown pasts and porridge and I eat a lot of fruit - I have learned to avoid driued foods though as the natural sugar content is higher by volume than in fresh fruit. I also eat most of my vegetables raw - carrots, celery, lettuce and cucumber mainly

    I've accepted that tacos, margaritas, birthday cake, and rest days are more important to me and my life than my ideal weight. As long as I'm within 15 lbs, I'm happy. It let's me do the things I love, though not optimally, but still enjoy life and be medically healthy- without having to buy a new wardrobe.
    But if you're a little farther outside your preferred range, then go for it! It's a perfect time to focus on health, with race training in full swing. Personally, I can't find the will/ desire to make myself feel deprived, so I just look at it as switches.... choose the Greek yogurt with honey and cinnamon instead of the bowl of ice cream, or the super veg pizza over the greasy meat lovers. That makes it feel more like a simple option choice, instead of a restrictive lifestyle overhaul.
    I went off a bit under someone else's comment about my most loved/ hated component of overall health... sleep. You could be doing the diet and exercise right, but without adequate sleep, you'll possibly always struggle with weight. The biggest change you can make might not be a case of "put down the bag of chips" so much as "turn off the computer"! Good luck, looking forward to seeing you tackle this with your usual energy and dedication!

      Eek. Ok, here comes a wee lecture I'm sure you've heard. As a lifelong insomniac who's tried everything, including sleep studies and a sleep doctor, I've learned sleep is important for every aspect of life... daily function, aging, long and short term health, WEIGHT... I had an early heart attack due to high blood pressure caused by my terrible sleep patterns. If you're going to bed with less than 7 hours to sleep, you're automatically shooting yourself in the foot in all those categories. Sleep is even more important than diet. You can cheat with a candy bar every day with no I'll effects. If you try cutting yourself short of sleep every day, disaster WILL catch up to you. But sleep better, and see EVERYTHING improve. Even though you'll have a little less time for everything, you'll be more energetic and efficient in accomplishing it.

      Are you a Coffee drinker@@motivationtheoryrunning? I worked graveyard shift for most of the 27 years I worked in hotels and lived on caffeine. I slept horribly, and rarely got more than 4 hours of sleep. I finally quit that job and quit taking caffeine at the same time. I now get 6 to 7 hours sleep every night and feel as good as I have felt in 40 years! I know how important your family is and you want to spend time with them, but cutting short on sleep now will lead to later health issues and less time with your family. Do whatever it takes to get your sleep even it means you cut back on something else.
