lol, I do know from experience that having a dog keeps me more active. I am pregnant in my third trimester and feeling fatigued much of the time, but the dog needs to walk. My husband will do it by himself if I am really not feeling well, but he always encourages me to go with him.
Dentist here, Snacking often can reduce your mouth's pH which can lead to tooth decay. If you really need to snack switch to healthy snacks like celery, carrots etc.
There can be a really thin line between healthy eating and having an unhealthy and disordered obsession with eating "healthy". This video is a GREAT reference for addressing some of those thoughts! Thank you!
That was me a couple years ago learned a very valuable lesson, couldve died but thank goodness i did not. Now im doing great. Doctors really were there for me guided me through and am doing very well
Abe Garfield, lmao after that it put me on track and ive never been healthier in my life. Remember this my guy. Who cares wat others think about you, your a beautiful person as u are and no one can change that
When you think you are too focused on eating healthy remember the following diet rules: Eat food. Mostly plants. Not too much. They will keep you safe and sane.
I appreciate Dr Mike’s holistic approach. Talking about mental health, sleep and cardiovascular health in addition to weight loss. It shows a doctor committed to the overall health of his patients.

Try having cats. When we had cats, we couldn't sit down to eat without 3 pairs of eyeballs staring... and staring... and STARING... until we gave in and fed them treats off our plates. They got half our dinner.... then we got hernias carrying them to the vet for their checkup. Plus crushed ribs when they slept on us. Well, at least no one ever accused us of UNDERfeeding our cats.
@@lailay2001 thank you so much :D I mostly just eat what I like. But I count calories. I typically stay around a calorie intake of 2000 cal per day (which is dependent on the amount of exercise I do that day).
I guess I'm too innocent haha I actually thought the mirror was to simulate eating with company so you'll eat slower and enjoy it more instead of scarfing it down in front of the TV. I pictured it as a candle light dinner dinner with yourself...
My husband lost over 120 lbs by cutting his carbs and increasing his meat & vegetables. We went on the same diet, he lost 60lbs and I put on 12lbs. Moral of the story; what works for one may not work for all.
Right it's not a one size fits all. I was losing weight while my boyfriend gained and we tried a other diet. I gained weight and he didn't change at all.
Following a good diet is only one part of the story. Aside from genetics, the amount of exercise you do is also very important. We all follow the rules of thermodynamics.
I think in the end is mostly about calories in and calories out. If you have a lower resting metabolism and he has higher, even if you eat the same amount/calories, he might be in a deficit and you don't. But also, if you weight lift, you might lose fat and gain muscle (which is good) and therefor gain pounds because muscle is heavier than fat. It depends on many things.
It's all about calories. What needs to be individualized is the ''way'' to get there and eat less calories. Adherance at the end of the day is the key. First the calories and macros are calculated, then a meal plan individualized for that person's needs, wants, lifestyle is created that fits those macro and micronutrient intake goals. That's it. People get different results on diets because their calorie intake and expenditure changes as well as their adherence to it. Food is not magic and the body cannot escape the laws of thermodynamics
Vegetables are mostly carbs, btw. I think when people say "cutting carbs" what they really mean is cutting sugar. As for him losing/you gaining, it's all about calories in/calories out. Science has shown again and again it's not what you heat but how much you eat VS how much you burn. So if two people are eating the same diet but one of them is burning, say 25%-75% more calories, then the one burning more calories will lose the weight. Plus, men tend to be bigger than women (height/weight) and so they tend to burn more calories just from that. There are many online calculators where you can estimate how many calories you burn based on your sex, age, weight, height, and activity level, and then you need to plan your caloric intake around that. When I lost over 120lbs. I did it by consistently eating 500 calories less than what I (conservatively) burned in a day.
As someone who works for a non-profit that helps rescue food and delivery it to people in need, the comment about intentionally spoiling and ruining food truly brought tears to my eyes. I can't believe anyone would do that knowing how Manu people are struggling to feel their families and children.
It’s honestly very likely that it’s someone who has anorexia and therefore a skewed perception of food. It’s their illness talking, not because they’re necessarily a bad person or anything.
It’s not as much of a thing as you think… I used to do this at restaurants all the time (not at home because I could just put it away). But when you’re sitting at a restaurant for another 20 minutes after eating… I’d rather ruin the french fries than keep snacking on them when I’m no longer hungry.
Mark Twain didn't even say this, this saying has been attributed to various people throughout history, including Mark Twain, Winston Churchill, and Thomas Jefferson among others. I guess this misquotation proves the point of the quote lol.
“Ruin food that you don’t need or want to eat” I’m sorry, is this a rich-person joke that I’m too poor to understand?!? Thank you, Doctor Mike, for pointing out how wasteful this is, in addition to being a really toxic mindset!
Whoever wrote that probably can afford to throw away which is still wasteful but that one was oddly specific. I see a lot of people with eating disorders give other people with eating disorders this "weight loss tip".
Even if you don't want to finish food you can always share it with a family member or roommate! If I make a whole tray of brownies i share with my roommate bc I only want a few and don't want to waste the rest
@@bonitagirlyy yes that's the best option, I don't eat the whole tray and get to make others happy as well, lol Making meals unedible is also pretty easy by just stuffing it in the freezer, that way you can't impulsively take it out and eat more.
I love how he said "if you do it so you hate yourself while eating" he was clearly disgusted with the whole idea! He can say he's body positive or whatever, but this proves that he's a doctor that doesn't hate fat people!
I believe I would like dr. Mike as a provider, except I live in California. No matter, I have a wonderful doctor myself who has been nothing but kind to me from day 1. I am very blessed to have both a doctor _and_ a dentist I _each_ think very highly of!
Turning down lights and turning up music is literally what restaurants do to get you to eat _more_ . When you're distracted from your food you tend to eat everything in front of you instead of stopping when full
Or just watching a movie. This is why they say never eat in front of the TV. But, you can fix that if you portion your food before sitting in front of the TV
Yep, that's the point the og comment said. When you're distracted while eating, you're not able to take note how much you're eating and control how much you intake, is what the comment meant. So yes, your and the og comment have the same idea
this urge popped up constantly when i was in the depths of my eating disorder; i felt like i couldn’t be trusted with food. didn’t help that i saw it encouraged on my tumblr 😞
Yeah, it's very typical behaviour for a couple of eating disorders that are focused on restriction. It's like purging, only you don't eat the food first ....
"Ruin any leftovers in your fridge, so you won't be tempted to eat them!" Yeah, 'cause that's EXACTLY why *I called them 'leftovers' and stored them in the fridge* in the first place!
I don't think this advice was referencing leftovers in your fridge. I've been in the situation many times in a restaurant where it didn't make sense to take leftovers or there wasn't enough to justify the container, but where I was full after eating most but not all of the meal. However, I typically will nibble at the extras if the wait for the check is long enough. I could definitely see the value of putting salt on the rest to shore up my self-control. Haha. No one should be passing off their leftover saliva-contaminated meal to the hungry, especially in a pandemic.
@@Daaaanielle, how exactly are you going to get them your leftovers? It's been widely debunked that you need to finish your plate because others...somewhere...are hungry. That creates an unhealthy relationship with food. (Google "clean plate club" for the ample research that this isn't healthy for kids.)
@@Daaaanielle I agree that food waste is awful but I think a lot of people are misunderstanding your sentiment. It's about recognizing the value of your food instead of discarding it and if you have leftovers, eating those as a meal when you would have instead purchased more food to make something else. We tend to view it as "Other people are hungry somewhere so we shouldn't waste food" when it doesn't make sense that your half-eaten spaghetti would help those people. But valuing food and saving it for later saves money that could one day help you be in a financial situation to help those less fortunate.
My personal advice: - Don’t start too drastically, make small changes as you’ll be more likely to stick to it. - Find out what changes you can make that are easy and start with those. For example, I love exercising but hate dieting so it was pretty easy for me to go from a relatively sedentary lifestyle to going to the gym 4 days a week and having two “active recovery” (or walking to make it sound less fancy). It is a big jump but I did used to go to the gym in the past, until a relationship I was in got in the way. - Cut out the unhealthy snacks, replacing them with healthier snacks. My go to is fruit, and I honestly prefer it over other snacks such as chocolate. If dieting is hard, don’t even stress about it for the first few weeks, we can work on that after a couple weeks. - Cut out/reduce fizzy drinks, easy enough to do and makes a difference. - Don’t use the scales as your only method to measure progress, I’d personally advise taking photos of yourself, but don’t do it everyday as you probably won’t see progress daily. - Don’t hate yourself for messing up once. If you have one cheat meal or miss one gym session, don’t think “well now it’s not worth it so I can just eat more and exercise less”. This isn’t true, one missed session isn’t as bad as five, one cheat meal isn’t as bad at a cheat day. Get back to it. - Mix cardio and weightlifting, as stated in the video - Believe in yourself, you got this :)
While the thing about the fizzy drinks is mostly true, one way around that for people who really particularly enjoys sodas is to learn how to make water kefir, pineapple tepache, and ginger ale or other sodas with a ginger bug. You are home fermenting your own drinks, _the yeast_ is eating the sugar, and you're getting a probiotic drink that costs pennies-on-the-dollar compared to _buying_ kombucha or something like that at the store. You would need to buy the grains for kefir and ginger to make a "ginger bug" for ginger ale or other "ginger bug" based sodas, but for pineapple tepache you don't need a starter culture for that. But you definitely get that bubbly drink at the end and you're putting something far better into your body then Coca-Cola or Sprite. _The Fermentation Adventure_ is a wonderful channel if you want to learn how to make that kind of stuff!

Some of this „advice“ really remind me of when I had an eating disorder. Thank you for making this video, for not saying that all weight loss advice is just bad, but for educating your viewers on a healthy way to eat and exercise. 🙏🏼❤️
I love how this doctor constructively criticizes even the most false advice and doesn't attack it just to attack it. He has a learning approach rather than "Let's just make fun of this advice to make fun of it." He's as kind as he can be to even the best falsehoods.
I honestly don’t understand why anyone would accuse Dr. Mike of being fatphobic. This new video really shows Dr. Mike cares about people being healthy. And that includes weight. Love that you debunked some myths
Yeah, but their belief is that health is totally unrelated to weight. Might work for a 20 year old, but not for someone in their 60s and the members of this cult much younger than that.

Wow, brings back memories. 3rd lunch was awful! Sometimes we got 10 minutes to eat; a couple of times, they gave us late passes because lunch was almost over by the time we were served. I remember the tardy bell rang one of those times before I could even sit down. 15 years later, still catch myself eating meals too quickly from time to time.
Same. Lunches were over so fast that I also trained myself to eat as fast as I could. We got 15 minutes. And recess was after lunch! So the faster we finished, the sooner we could go out and play. Ridiculous :/
I've had an eating disorder for quite some years and I'm so afraid a good amount of those tips remind me of the "pro-anorexia tips". It's really scary how these so called healthy tips can make anyone spiral into an ed or disordered eating really fast. Take care guys and be careful
for sure !! the pipeline into disordered eating is such a slippery slope. I also fell into it for a long time, and because of the abundancy of "dieting tips" (which are truly pro-ana tips), its become increasingly difficult to find reliable information that won't re-introduce those bad habits. It's super important to check your information numerous times when it comes to health advice especially
I'm a recovering bulimic and I used to have anorexia a couple years ago but I have long recovered now but like this comment means the world to me because the amount of trending weight loss tiktoks and stuff are all pro ana and it's horrible because young people are watching them and they think because they don't weigh 7 stone and because they have thighs that get bigger when they sit down they think they're overweight when really they're completely average if not already slightly underweight really! No one needs to lose weight unless you really want to and you're at a safe weight to do so or you really need to for medical purposes... I just wish that people didn't confuse healthy eating with weight loss eating...
Exactly. Don’t starve yourself to be healthy. If you don’t have any bad side effects and have a good amount of movement every so often that works for you you don’t need to fast or anything just to be ‘pretty’ or what society deems as ‘healthy’ which is most certainly very flimsy.
I think the best advice instead of "getting used to feeling hungry" would be to learn the difference between hunger and cravings. Being hungry means your body needs energy. Cravings mean you want to eat food just because it is tasty but you don't really need it. If at the end of the day you feel pizza hungry you're not hungry, you're craving
Cravings can be an indication of insufficient nutrients, so learning to interpret the cravings is just as important as differentiating between hunger and cravings. I personally go on a craving rampage if I let myself get dehydrated. And of course something I'm an idiot and forget that specifically dehydration triggers that and will let myself do this craving rampage for a few hours
@@ShigekiHizashi agreed. Also for cravings I ask myself " if I don't have it will I die? Will I collapse from death?". Dramatic but it helps me realize that I'll be fine if I don't have it and should have some water instead. As well as understanding that certain foods hurt my stomach so telling myself " eating that slice isn't worth the stomach ache, have something else".
Excellent advice! Also COLD water (not 70 degrees F) works great for quenching appetite/cravings. My “hunger” headaches turned out to be from dehydration.
I have trouble getting myself it eat anything It’s not an ED, I don’t have diet issues I just don’t like eating I never feel hungry. I drink a bottle of water and feel full smh
As someone who is decently-severely physically disabled, I'd love to see you make a video about ways to exercise when moving is painful. Edit: for those of you saying "swimming" while it is an excellent idea, and thank you so much, it's not easy for many of us disabled people to get out of the house. I should have added that to the criteria for the exercises in the first place. I apologize for not being more specific. ♡
I agree, when simply going for a short walk leaves you in increased pain and fatigue for days afterwards, it is difficult to find a way to exercise safely and at an amount that is beneficial.
Swimming, even just staying in a pool for as long as you can tolerate, is great exercise. Have you considered an upper-body wheel? They're like stationary bikes, but for your arms. And, like so many other things, it's really going to depend a lot on your exact circumstances.
I’d love this too! I’ve found little things that can help - you can get little cycle things you can use while you’re sitting which at least gets your legs moving a bit.
@@solcohen9042 I definitely have, I even used to do regular water therapy when I was little. I more meant things you can do at home, as some of us now have a really hard time getting out of the house. I really appreciate the advice, though, and am grateful that you give it. ♡
Biggest tip I have as someone who is overweight and losing weight is this- Serve your plate then put your leftovers away before you eat. This makes it more effort to go back for seconds, and that minimal amount more effort might deter you from having another plate. This small change of putting the leftover away before I eat instead of after i eat has been GAMECHANGING for me personally.
“there are people starving in America”, Africa appreciates that statement, we love how your people have raised awareness for poverty in African in the past but I feel like Americans need to take care of Americans more now. Appreciate the video Doc👍🏾
Dido, Japan and other countries have ads for us that are like "help the USA, they're ppl are starving, to many are homeless" or something like that. Ive seen the ads to an i was just like "yep, 100% true, great country we are not".
I also never quite understood this argument. Me throwing food away is not exactly taking it from starving people. And if I don't know any starving people I can go and give it to, it doesn't really matter. My body is not a garbage disposal. If I made it and I hate it, I don't gotta eat it. That being said, ruining food so I won't go and eat it just smacks of eating disorder logic. If I don't want to eat something, I'll throw it away, not pour salt all over it.
@@zjeremyyparko yeah, but you dont know beforehand that you wont like a new recipe or something, or maybe you accidentally burn something and cant eat it. you dont buy those ingredients with the intent to waste them
@@zjeremyyparko For me it is honouring the whole process of growing and processing food. So what if the recipe didn't turn out great? Unless something really aweful happend, like burning it or using soap powder instead of flour, I can eat it. It won't kill me even if I don't like it too much. Leftovers make nice meals. Why should they be spoiled or destroyed??? It's about being mindful with your food. Train yourself. We seem to be heading for food shortages and price hikes. It soon might not be a matter of linking but a matter of availability and affordability.
My biology teacher also talked about how to lose weight. She said "DONT STARVE YOURSELF. It won't help you, instead its important to eat the *right* kind of food. The right fat etc." I personally knew this already since my mother is in the medical field, but I know it helped so many people from my class.
The wording of 'don't starve yourself' is wrong in itself because starving is not a choice. What is a choice is fasting and it has a lot of health benefits, even if its 'just intermittent'.
@@Yugilein but in the context of losing weight, starving themselves is a real thing that people do. That usually result in malnutrition, lack of energy, fainting, etc. Fasting is a healthier way of doing it, with the purpose of cleansing your body and it's more of/ has started as a cultural thing, I believe
this video is rlly abt to change my life. he made me realize “you don’t have to starve to look good & be healthy” bc i feel like as girls so many are food shamed by older relatives. & bullied saying it’s just“tough love” & to stop being soft.
It’s really horrible how family can be cruel and bullying under the guise of kindness! Unfortunately oftentimes it’s what was done to them so they do it to their kids too.

It's true when I eat something delicious and have more calories, so I wouldn't eat too much. But when I eat something I don't like, I would like to distract myself. I am a picky eater, I dislike peppers, tomatoes, potatoes, beet, lettuce, radish, every form of nuts, fresh water fishes, beef, and pig products. So I would eat them while being distracted. I personally can vouch for the "smaller plates" advice. I'm still overweight, but I was about a year ago almost obese and using our bit smaller plates really helped me to lose weight (+10 kg with some exercise). I think it was for me more like I was filling my plate as much as possible so I don't need to go to get a refill, and then forcing me to eat myself full because I didn't want to leave any leftovers. Using a smaller plate helped me to have a more reasonable portion and I wasn't getting any refills even though I knew I was eating less. I used to be really fat. I was on the verge of developing serious health conditions. I remember not being able to tie my shoelaces and my sleep suffered as well. My life changed when I finally set my mind to the thinking that anything is possible if you decide so. I took a meal plan to start with. I created it online, on dietarize, which was super helpful to me. I didn't have to worry about calories, macros, nutrients and all that stuff, I just focused on walking long distances and exercising after I got on a level where I could do some simple workouts. I hope my story will inspire you to do the same. To change your body you must first change your mind!
Thank you! It does help. As someone who suffered from more than one eating disorder from the age of 13, I’m now not fully recovered but still not at the weight I would like to be. I’m trying to keep things healthy and this is so motivational
I’ve known a lot of people who tell me they want to lose weight but don’t know how much. The secret to getting to that healthy weight and maintaining it is to change the types of food they are eating and a bit of exercise, that’s all. There is no magic supplement to reduce weight and always know what the weight should be according to the person’s height.
No idea if anyone will see this but here is how I lost quite a lot of weight: I planned my meals. At the beginning of the week I planned out exactly what I was going to eat every single day. And I only bought the ingredients for these meals (healthy meals of course). Nothing else. Trust me: Its WAY easier to not buy chips rather that to not eat them when they are already at home. I also only had two meals and a snack a day. Breakfast at 12:00 and dinner at 18:00. The snack was a plate with fruit and veggies. Yes. Sometimes I was a little hungry. But nothing terrible. And no matter what the weather was, I always went out on a walk for 30-60min. With this method I lost about 20kg in 4 months. Are they faster ways? Probably. But this one worked for me. All the others didn't cause I couldn't stick to them.
I'm glad it worked for you...but you should never be on any type of "diet" that leaves you feeling hungry. And only 2 meals + 1 snack a day?? Spread the meals out throughout the day. Smaller portions, but more meals.
@@jesse5658 Just like Dr. Mike said, everyone is different. Some people need smaller meals and snacks throughout the day, some people only need 2 or three full meals. It depends on many factors. Also we don't know how bad OP's "hunger" was, it could have just been "cravings" that lessened as time went on and they lost more weight. I agree that you shouldn't restrict yourself to the point where you're always feeling hungry, but I wouldn't assume that more than 2-3 meals is what's best for OP.
I think the biggest issue with all these programs or "advice" out there is eliminating the positive correlation we have with food. We need to learn that we can still love food and be healthy and fit.

Try fruit smoothies. Generally fruit has a lot of calories and smoothies are easy to prep (frozen fruit works best for smoothies) and and is easy on the stomach. Another tip is to have high calorie veggies in the fridge to snack on (think roasted sweet potato and butternut squash). I tend to snack while I cook or read. Final tip is to eat some nut butters or cheeses with some meals (like peanut butter on apples, cheese and crackers). The fat from the nuts and dairy keeps you full for longer, but is a healthier way to increase calories if used in moderation. Honestly, I feel the best way to diet (for whatever reason) is to learn how to cook healthy meals. Healthy is different for different people. I know cooking takes time to learn, but the best way is to choose one versatile method (smoothies, oven roasting) and making a bunch of stuff with the method. Eventually you find your favorites that you can make on autopilot and meal prep for. Hope this helps.
I work in an ED service. In our service, where the primary cause of low weight is low nutritional intake, we recommend patients to weight restore by increasing nutritional intake very gradually to avoid developing refeeding syndrome. We would also recommend regular blood tests to monitor your risk of refeeding syndrome, especially serum phosphate. Supplements (especially thiamine) can also help reduce the risk. I would recommend working with a dietician to make sure that you increase your intake very gradually and in a way that works for you. If the reasons for undereating are psychological (such as an eating disorder, sensory issues, PTSD, anxiety, etc) I would recommend speaking with a mental health professional. This is of course assuming your low weight is due to low food intake. Other causes such as hyperthyroidism would need to be assessed by a medical professional.
Some thirty years ago I once met a man who had just lost a huge lot of weight by eating nothing but (dark?) chocolate and fruits. Yes, I am serious. His energy level was unbelievable. I still wonder whether he died of a heart attack after doing that to his body.

"Getting in shape is hard, maintaining it is easy." Was the best advice I had ever gotten. There are no "miracle" pills or short cuts. Just good old healthy eating with exercise and plenty of rest and sleep.
Interesting. I have almost always heard the EXACT opposite - that with enough effort over a relatively short period of time anyone can get 'ripped,' but maintaining it over a long period of time is a true mental challenge. Glad to hear it's the opposite.
Getting in shape is hard but maintaining is also hard if you gain weight easily. If I go off my diet for a few days I'll start gaining. So, it's really bad if it's a couple of busy days at work or I fall off the diet on a 3 day weekend.
@@AudraT You are so right! Most dieters gain back the weight and then some. Most of us have to work hard counting calories, saying no to desserts and exercising to lose the weight. If we don't keep it up, the weight creeps on so quickly. For me, maintenance is the hardest part.
I've had Noom for almost six months and just recently hit my goal weight. @@lauren3544 It does, but it depends on what your focus is, your current weight, current activity level, and current eating habits. It's not a stringent calorie goal because the main focus of noom is to change your relationship with food and your body. You also don't do this completely on your own. You get your personal coach that helps you with mini goals each week, and you're also assigned to a group with other people in the same level of your journey, they're both incredibly helpful. You have people that can relate to setbacks or the dreaded plateau as well as cheerleaders for your successes.
I'm working on losing weight for health reasons. This is really helpful for me, as there are a LOT of tips out there that - for someone like me - leads to more disordered eating. I'll definitely be talking to my doctor about some of these.
I've been doing intermittent fasting for about 1 month and so far I've lost 4 kg. I'm really happy 😊. Thank you for recommending intermittent fasting, Doctor Mike!
I'e been thinking of getting into it, to not only help me feel fit but hopefully improve my mental health a bit aswell, how did you get started? are there any videos or websites that you'd reccomend? i just don't really know where to start
i’ve been interested in trying this because of the benefits dr mike talked about but when i restrict myself i always binge like crazy so i’m not totally sure if i should actually look into it
I live in Japan and I realize how many of my friends are addicted to being slim and trying to eat less. Many of them are trying to avoid foods high in calories without realizing that they actually end up consuming a greater amount of chemical sugars. Also, some of them avoid eating specific nutrients like carbs. I strongly feel that these eating disorders are serious issues in Japan but it's very hard to find a solution for this because of the misinterpretation that being skinny is the ultimate beauty...
Carbs are not nutrients, you can live a very happy & healthy life eating zero carbs. They are never the best sources of micronutrients, fats usually are. Humans evolved to get their nutrition from fats and proteins, primarily from animal sources, you do not need to eat any carbs at all. Note I am not against vegetables as they have very little carbs and also can be rich in nutrients, but you for sure do not need any grains.
@@Starcraftmazter Starchy carbs - such as potatoes, pasta, etc are shown to improve brain function. Vegetables don’t “contain low carbs”, they are carbohydrates. Humans very much evolved to eat grains, and our proteins and fats haven’t been mainly from animal sources for a lonnnng time. Our huge step in humanity from hunter-gatherer systems ( i.e. proteins and fats) to agricultural (i.e. heavier in carbs) happened around 10,000 years ago. I don’t know when we in the privileged world decided that carbs (which as you did say, includes vegetables) are the enemy, but they’re really not. The issue lies more in what carbs we get and from where. There’s a huge difference between a loaf of home-made whole-grain bread and a donut from a gas station.
@@Kikua1612 Last 10,000 of millions of years of evolution and around 300,000 years of modern humans. Please show me and sources which claim carbs improve brain function. You are sorely mistaken on all counts. Vegetables are NOT "carbohydrates" they CONTAIN some carbs. Nobody makes whole-grain bread at home, this is not a thing people do nowdays.
@@Starcraftmazter ??? carbs are literally a macronutrient, nutrient is literally in the name. your body NEEDS carbs for energy please don’t be scared of them. you can still lose weight and eat a normal amount of carbs! ❤️ please don’t misinform people that is so dangerous for someone to read especially if you struggle with disordered eating.
I just started Noom about a month ago. I didn't think I'd like it but I really do so far. I love that they focus on the psychology and sociology behind why we eat the way we do. I'm almost down to pre-quarantine weight and then the real work starts 🙂
@@mandy3486 The same thing happened to me! I couldn't understand what the app was supposed to be doing. The trainer checked in once a week with "you good" and that's it. Not good enough for $20 a month, thank goodness I didn't pay for the year. Apart from food tracking and weighing yourself daily and articles what else is Noom suppose to do? My Fitness Pal does all of that for free
Noon is just a really expensive Ed, some of the info provided is really problematic and the calories they tell you to eat are WAY to low for any normal person I would look at other options honestly
Hey Dr. Mike! Here’s a question for you: I’m type 1 diabetic and I’ve heard contradictory claims about weight loss with diabetes. Have you heard anything that suggests that weight loss is more difficult with diabetes? I’ve heard both sides, that it can be harder and that it can be the same as for non-diabetics. Another thing I’m curious about because I’ve never been able to pull it off myself is this: is intermittent fasting a healthy thing for someone with type 1 diabetes to do? When I go for too long without a meal I’ve seen my blood sugar go down, but I’ve also seen it go up, and I’m not sure what would cause that. I know glycogen formation and breakdown plays a role in blood sugar maintenance, but I don’t know how it comes in to play when the body is fasting.
I know way too many people who are into “healthy advice” but personally I’d rather just eat my veggies, fruits, grains and protein while having a good balance with “junk food”. I haven’t had problems but I just hope people can just look into for evidence before following advice from anyone

Hey, if you are like me, a caffeine-sensitive person with an anxiety disorder, I'm gonna suggest you *do not* drink coffee in the middle of a fast. Just my opinion.
Agreed, I am also hypoglycaemic with fast metabolism. I’ve been avoiding coffee for a while now and I haven’t had an anxiety attack for several months.
Agreed. I’m so sensitive to caffeine now that I can only have drip coffee once a week with a BIG breakfast, otherwise I get panic attacks. I made the mistake of having coffee while fasting, NEVER AGAIN.
@@horseygirlsec25 Same! I've worked myself up to one cup a day, but I definitely need to eat something or I *will* have an anxiety attack, and it usually lasts a long time.

@@ohmareshah right, like you never have any left over food. Nothing, not a piece of cake, a slice of pizza or a hand full of pasta. You always manage to be spot on with the portions needed for that meal on that day.
@@dude988 if I was so worried about losing weight that I felt the need to destroy perfectly good food, then no, I wouldn't have so much food around that I would have leftover cake or pizza. Thankfully I'm not and I eat my leftovers like a normal person. I'm lactose intolerant anyway so theres not really alot of food that I can eat that comes with leftovers. I guess I have more control over portions that way, seeing as I have to make all my own food.
@@dude988 I think a lot of people are misunderstanding the sentiment when it comes to the topic of food waste. The whole throwing away your leftovers thing just sounds extremely privileged to anyone who has been poor because we have been in a situation where when you're out of money 4 days before your paycheck, you'll be really glad you saved what you had.
9:05 For me, snacking has the opposite effect. I used to snack on fruits and roasted grains, but when I sat down for dinner, I'd still have a large meal. I ended gaining weight. Then I stopped snacking and my weight dropped so much within weeks that I had to get new clothes.
Yeah snacking only works if you don't eat big meals too. The concept is to spread your caloric intake throughout several small meals instead of a few big meals

The one about being used to the sensation of hunger I believe it referred to building your frustration tolerance at a psychological level. If you can tolerate the sensation of mild discomfort out of hunger, you can endure through cravings, although you do need to be aware of your sensations not to "starve" yourself and not to overeat on your next meal in compensation. I think the issue is when the recommendation is "you need to lose weight". It can trigger a lot of people who have been trying to lose weight all their life. It's more about the way of talking then the goals he's looking for. If doctors take a lighter approach with maybe talking about recipes and what would be a good sized meal and how that can benefit colesterol levels among other things without mentioning weight I think it makes a huge difference for someone that has been struggling with the scale number for years.
Sara Girão Holm Well, he gives advice on how to lose weight; he doesn’t just say “lose weight.” Some bad doctors might do that, but Dr. Mike’s channel doesn’t. Also, if a bad doctor just said, “lose weight” without giving any advice or details, that doesn’t make them “fat-phobic”; it just makes them a bad, uncommunicative, and non-understanding doctor.

@@rayanrahmani9838 I've seen videos where he talks about recommending patients to lose weight. I think that's where the Reddit thread actually started from. I'm not saying he is wrong for wanting a better life for his patients just the way he fraises it can be better when dealing with people that have eating disorders or have tried to lose weight all their life. That's why I say make it about the goals and not the scale number. One can be in normal BMI weight and still have bad health numbers. It's not a perfect correlation.
I feel one of the best things I have done for my son was teach him to eat until he is comfortable, not full. I have never made my son clean his plate. When he was 2-3 years old, he started eating 3rds and 4ths on many dishes and was eating more than the adults (to be fair, he also grows faster than most kids). We started only allowing 3rds after his bath. So dinner with 2nds if he wanted, bath immediately after, then more food if he wants. 9 times out of 10, he doesn't want 3rds. It has been super hard instilling healthy habits in him when I don't have a healthy relationship with food.
I just wanted to congratulate you for doing great job parenting your son. I am 15 and I always struggled with my overweight because my parents always forced me to clean my plate even if I was full, and I am not talking about vegetables or meat, the foods I was forced to eat was most of the time unhealthy, now that it's way easier to control what I eat, here I am :) I wish my parents were a lot more like you
Same here, trying to teach healthy way when haven't one myself. Seems like my younger daughter is so active that she eats huge portions for her age, 9yo, without gaining weight.. 😅
We need more parents like you. My parents never forced me to clean my plate, but I can't help but whenever I visited my former friend's house as a kid, I always had to clean my plate. That drilled the idea into my head that I had to finish everything on my plate, and I started to feel really bad about wasting food at home. I gradually started eating more and more because of that.
Having him wait for it is an excellent idea. I work with preschoolers and many times if a child asked for more and I could not get back to them immediately (having 23 other children to attend to) when I got back to that child between 2-5 minutes later they were getting up to put away their plate. The couple of minutes was all their little stomach needed to get the message “I’m full” to get through.
So glad to hear you talk about intermittent fasting. I have done this for a long time. I eat one or two meals a day and feel fantastic. I don't eat breakfast. I feel better doing this than eating three meals per day.
Yea on average you’ll lose about 1% a week to be in a healthy weight loss, obviously works out to 1.8 a week, however don’t be discouraged if you lose a little less than that, but do what makes you feel healthy if you feel yourself getting weak eat a bit more and consult with your doctor if you’re losing a lot of weight over a little time, most sustainable way to lose weight is gradually after all, but be healthy and have fun doing it
I’m very prone to disordered eating, and I’m finally reaching out to a doctor to see what can be done for me. In the meantime, hearing advice from a professional helps me a lot. Thanks Doctor Mike.
Hi, I would highly recommend seeing a registered dietitian for anything nutrition related. Nutrition is not really in a doctor’s field. They have little education in nutrition, whereas dietitians specialise in everything nutrition related and can help you with your individual needs. Unfortunately I’ve seen the horrible effects on people’s health when doctors do not give appropriate nutrition intervention.

7:00 I agree that you can lose weight without starving. I gained 15kg during quarantine (original weight: 50-51kg). Now, about 4mos later, I went back to my original weight thru just hiit and/or cardio honestly. Nothing too fancy, I just did it consistently. Didn’t starve myself the whole time, but I did have to switch to healthier food.
Can you do a video about tattoos and health? Maybe debunking any myths and talking about practical concerns for people with tattoos, like not tattooing over potentially suspicious moles?
I found noom really overwhelming. There was so much information that I couldn't retain it all. I fell off the wagon hard, pretty early on. It didn't work for me, and it's pretty expensive. Just something to consider. I'm glad it works for a lot of people though.
Same! I tried it for about 2 weeks and it was a little too much for me. Too many reminders and too much to shuffle through. I did much better when I kept a simple food log in a notebook lol
I did Noom a couple of years ago with positive results, and I'm doing it again because my lifestyle changed drastically (COVID, marriage, birth control, new job, over 25 now) and I needed an updated approach, which it has been helping me with. All that to say, I'm seeing the updated Noom vs old Noom, and one of those options is deciding how much time you want to dedicate per day to the lessons. I chose the 5-8 minute bracket, but there's also 2-5, 8-10, 10-12, and even 1-2, you can change it at any time.
I was on it for 14 months and didn’t lose a thing. My coach kept giving me advice on how to tweak it, even suggesting I go below 1,000 calories a day long term??? But I finally got diagnosed with PCOS and realized I’m insulin resistant. I ditched Noom, started intermittent fasting. It took four months to reverse my insulin resistance, but have been losing about a pound a week since then. It turns out I’d pretty much been doing everything right! I just couldn’t get past the insulin resistance to burn fat stores, so I’d never seen results. If it wasn’t for intermittent fasting I’d have had to go on a diabetes drug to trick my body. I’m so glad I went ahead and tried IF first instead of just thinking I wasn’t doing things well enough! Plus, scheduled eating is free, but pills and injections aren’t! 😅
I really appreciate Dr. Mike looks at information like weight loss tips and explains it in simple terms to where everyone can understand and go on to explain he agrees or disagrees with it in detail. I've spoken to a lot of people who will speak on topics they believe so strongly about, but they can't tell me exactly why they believe or disagree with it. And it's really refreshing to hear someone really know what they're talking about and be able to consider/explain both sides of an argument without anger or bias. No fear mongering or anger but facts that he's dedicated time learning. Thank you for what you do Dr. Mike. You're very appreciated
The "cooking" tip is the most vital, in my opinion. Cooking from a young age, I saved money (cooking for myself) and understood what was in things I would see on restaurant menus. This made healthy choices easier (avoid high-fat items like wing sauce; flavored melted butter) without having to order a salad out of ignorance. When you know how to make something, you also start to understand flavor combinations so you can have fun making healthier versions of your favorite things. Deconstructed recipes (like "Lasagne Stew" where half of the pasta is subbed with grated zucchini) are the most fun, easy, and have the most payoff (volume with fewer calories). This helped me again after college when I decided to go plant-based to reduce my cholesterol (even healthy-looking people can have high cholesterol). I branched out by adding recipes to my arsenal from other countries, expanding my options further than what I could order locally. Knowing how it's made (as a vegan) also meant I knew what to avoid when going out and gave me a starting point to invent plant-based versions of it at home. It is a skill (time + effort), but it's always handy. ;)
cooking is literally the most valuable skill/ talent you can ever have. you have to eat atleast once a day for the rest of your life lol not to mention the money

Yep, that's the point the og comment said. When you're distracted while eating, you're not able to take note how much you're eating and control how much you intake, is what the comment meant. So yes, your and the og comment have the same idea
Huh! Interesting lol
Why would you intentionally spoil perfectly good food??! That's like telling people to burn money so they don't spend it too much!
this urge popped up constantly when i was in the depths of my eating disorder; i felt like i couldn’t be trusted with food. didn’t help that i saw it encouraged on my tumblr 😞
Yeah, it's very typical behaviour for a couple of eating disorders that are focused on restriction. It's like purging, only you don't eat the food first ....
Excellent analogy 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Seriously! Pop it in the freezer or just dont buy it in the first place.
It's an eating disorder thing, for sure. I saw that tip a lot on forums back in the day. It's right up there with the chew-spit approach.
"Ruin any leftovers in your fridge, so you won't be tempted to eat them!" Yeah, 'cause that's EXACTLY why *I called them 'leftovers' and stored them in the fridge* in the first place!
Also, yay! food waste!
People are going hungry but lets throw things out because we are not able to control ourselves.
Yeah I'm at that and was like whaaat?
My personal advice:
- Don’t start too drastically, make small changes as you’ll be more likely to stick to it.
- Mix cardio and weightlifting, as stated in the video
- Believe in yourself, you got this :)
All great advice, thanks!
_The Fermentation Adventure_ is a wonderful channel if you want to learn how to make that kind of stuff!
diet soda is fine

Middle and high school trained me to scarf down lunches in
hello. Nice to see my people here....
Wow we always got about 30 minutes for lunch at school. And I thought that wasn’t really enough. 😟
@@lauragwinn5946 we got “30 minutes” for lunch but we had to wait in line for most of that time. It sucked for ppl who couldn’t bring their own lunch
I've had an eating disorder for quite some years and I'm so afraid a good amount of those tips remind me of the "pro-anorexia tips". It's really scary how these so called healthy tips can make anyone spiral into an ed or disordered eating really fast. Take care guys and be careful
This is just so supportive and wholesome. ☺️ I’m sorry you’re dealing with an ed, but I’m glad you commented. 🌻
for sure !! the pipeline into disordered eating is such a slippery slope.
If you don’t have any bad side effects and have a good amount of movement every so often that works for you you don’t need to fast or anything just to be ‘pretty’ or what society deems as ‘healthy’ which is most certainly very flimsy.
geia su I suffered from an ED on and off since '89 and I know how hard it is not to go back to it. stay strong and do be careful. ❤
I have trouble getting myself it eat anything
It’s not an ED, I don’t have diet issues I just don’t like eating
I never feel hungry.

I’m not an expert but if u haven’t tried it yet and are able to, swimming may be a good option.
Swimming, even just staying in a pool for as long as you can tolerate, is great exercise.
Have you considered an upper-body wheel? They're like stationary bikes, but for your arms.
And, like so many other things, it's really going to depend a lot on your exact circumstances.

@@comend1910 Why don't you have common sense?

Absolutely!! Us underweight people need tips too 😥
Yes, yes, yes!!
I think I'm fine 30kg 😅

I've had Noom for almost six months and just recently hit my goal weight. I'm most grateful for learning to appreciate and love my body, but the best thing I got out of Noom is being able to identify and confront my stress eating while also learning to sit and be uncomfortable with my feelings (mainly stress) instead of running away from it (and running towards comfort foods).
I've been thinking about trying it but I didn't know anyone that has. Does it set calorie limits or anything like that?
@@lauren3544 It does, but it depends on what your focus is, your current weight, current activity level, and current eating habits. It's not a stringent calorie goal because the main focus of noom is to change your relationship with food and your body. You also don't do this completely on your own. You get your personal coach that helps you with mini goals each week, and you're also assigned to a group with other people in the same level of your journey, they're both incredibly helpful. You have people that can relate to setbacks or the dreaded plateau as well as cheerleaders for your successes.

I've been doing intermittent fasting for about 1 month and so far I've lost 4 kg. I'm really happy 😊.
Thank you for recommending intermittent fasting, Doctor Mike!
Same, I tend to eat too much, so intermittent fasting really help me cutting calories ! ;)
@@Starcraftmazter
Starchy carbs - such as potatoes, pasta, etc are shown to improve brain function.
@@Starcraftmazter I know several people that make their own bread.
I enjoyed it until I had trouble and my trainer ignored me for 10 days even though I asked for help
I did it earlier this year & lost 30 pounds. I recommend it to everyone I know
@@mandy3486 The same thing happened to me!
Hey Dr. Mike!
Here’s a question for you:
I’m type 1 diabetic and I’ve heard contradictory claims about weight loss with diabetes.

I can't belive someone would rather ruin food to get rid of it instead of giving it to someone who needs it
Sure, instead of throwing that left over take away in the bin I go out to find a homeless....
Or why they couldnt just make smaller portions

It's about balance

The couple of minutes was all their little stomach needed to get the message “I’m full” to get through.
kids are like animals they dont know when to stop your kids gonna be overweight... if i let my cat eat as much as she wants she would be obese
So glad to hear you talk about intermittent fasting. I have done this for a long time. I eat one or two meals a day and feel fantastic. I don't eat breakfast. I feel better doing this than eating three meals per day.

I lost weight for awhile but I’m too busy to have homework in addition to tracking my food. 🥴
@@annajoiedavis7395 That’s great to know, thanks!
