... and he said it was in 55 mph speed zone. As much as I hate driving in order to run, I prefer to never share a road with cars. Better safe than sorry. This isn't victim blaming, BTW, just reinforcing what I already knew.
I too also watched Nick’s video and two things came to my mind as I watched it. One was how in my opinion the reason he survived with minimal damage was because of his level of strength and fitness. And of course the other thing was what your video is about. You’re 100% spot on. I’ve been telling friends for years “ that if one of my kids came to me and told me that they are thinking about becoming a triathlete that I would encourage them to take up rock climbing or skydiving because both of them would be safer. It’s crazy out there now because of the screens. It’s not just the phone screens it’s also the tablets now that are built into the dashes of vehicles now a days.
This is definitely something worth ranting about. I try and run at my local State Parks whenever possible to keep away from cars and their bad drivers. Phones have definitely made it much worse, but I do remember being on a bus 20 years ago, and looking down out the window and seeing a guy driving with a newspaper spread out over his steering wheel.
@@Feanaro5503 same here - give me a trail run EVERY TIME lol. I never run on the street for this exact reason - roads are made for cars, not people and it makes no difference who has the right of way when the other person is in a 5,000lb car
every video of Nick running he is shirtless in the dark with a full camera crew. Im not blaming the driver here when he runs with 0 protective gear. If you know that road is dangerous you should be prepared. Using the garmin flashlight for high viz is reckless.
I didn’t watch his video but around here people will run IN THE STREET when there’s a freaking sidewalk and people on bicycles ride on highways with zero shoulder where the speed limit is 60mph…. No one should get hit but doing those things puts urself in harms way
I drive for a living and everyone attacked me earlier when i said how do you not see a big ass man crossing the road. I see hundreds of feet in front of me at all times, my eyes are on the road.
I agree. Some of the best advice I was giving is treat all cars like they think that you’re invisible. I run with the nox tracer lighted vest and with a chest lamp and with this still had a guy hit his breaks as he was turning into me. I will wait for cars or run behind them when they stop at an intersection . I’ve had two people almost turn into me cause they are not paying attention. Be safe out there!
I'm on the same page as you! Most of my running is early morning in the Dark (with my dog), and just in the past two months, I've had two close calls in pedestrian crossings that have left me frustrated and not trusting anyone in a car.
I run, hike, and mountain bike on trails. Motorways are for motorists. Motorists do not pay attention, are texting, smoking weed, cigs, drinking, on drugs, and who knows what else. It’s insane to run on a roadway. We’re not cars. We have families….and lives. We can’t expect others to put value on our lives, but we can put value on our own by acting sensibly.
I usually don’t carry my phone because of the extra weight that it holds but now you never know. God forbid anything happens and I don’t have my phone, take pictures, take down license plates. It’s a crazy world out there. Stay safe all.
I've never had a tree pull out in front of me. That's why I prefer the trails. That's also why I don't ride motorcycles anymore. I get so stressed running the edge of roads that it defeats the purpose of running at all. Hopefully Nick recovers quickly.
'Needed rant'!! Doesn't matter if your wearing a headlamp & brightly colored clothing (I'm a early morning runner), that Starbucks entrance/exit is more important than your safety! I quit road cycling (cat. 2 racer) for safety reasons also. 😵!
I had a gun pulled on me because I was 'on the road'. I was also shot at by two gang-members. Plus lot's of things thrown at me and cigarette smoke blown at me at stop lights among other things.
I have definitely had some full-on flying the bird at drivers' moments. After getting pushed off the road. Most of the people on my local roads see me, and most move over and get a little wave from me. That, in turn, gets them in the habit of waving at me. Even if it's just a little wave, I know they see me. I know they think I'm nuts for running in the snow and rain, but they expect to see me out there.
On the very rare occasion that I run roads, I trust nobody. I bike a fair amount as well and try to bike where there are no cars. It’s hard to avoid so you need to always keep your head on a swivel.
I own a road bike. Cannot remember the last time I went out. Now I ONLY ride my mountain bike on designated bike trails and/or wooded trails. In our state it is against the law to use your phone while driving. I'd say that one out of three cars that go by my house are violating the law. Never seen any one being stopped. It's simple make people accountable for their actions ( no wonder insurance rates have doubled and tripled lately )
Runners really are the unwelcome guests, on pavements (sidewalks 😉) pedestrians walk 6 a berth and can look straight thru you when you are running towards them with nowhere to go (I tend to stop right in front of them with no warning for a drink. We can both be awkward eh! Cars drive in cycle lanes to get me out of them even when they have no need. I’m not perfect I hate those cyclists 😂
I run on fairly busy roads all the time. The sidewalks in my town are in such poor condition they are ankle breakers. So I almost always am in the street. With that said I most often am out on the roads at 3am when then are very few cars also out. I also wear a headlamp and a flashing read band light around my left calf. If I am running against traffic the headlamp is visible, if with traffic the band light is on the road side of my body to be more visible. Yes, the roads are dangerous but make yourself visible and stay aware of your surroundings.
I agree, it’s scary out there! We are ultimately responsible for making sure we can be seen...but for those not even looking ...they put everyone at risk.
Running and riding a bike on the road is the most insane thing a human being can do. I live in MI and I've lost track of how many people have died the last few years. They create these 3 foot biking lanes that I call "death lanes" where they're trying to encourage biking. Yes, I'm going to ride a bike 1 foot from the 2 ton death machine on my left. All of this applies to runners. Sidewalks and designated paths only.
@motivationtheoryrunning yup. And the biking and running community just yells about bad drivers, pounding their fists in the table about their right to be on the road. Which is absolutely true. But you aren't going to fix them. They'll remain irresponsible long after you get killed.
My wife is always concerned when I tell her I'll be running along the road. I only run where I have a a good amount of space between the road and the guard rail. I know it's not full protection but I also wait for cars alot.
Some guy posted a video where he or someone else got tired of the cyclists whizzing by his house on an adjacent trail, so he put up a barrier and those cyclists were hitting it at full speed and slumping over like stuffed dolls. Just something else disturbing to be aware of.
While i agree with this, me being a road runner, will always presume that i can get hit as roads are meant for cars. US roads were far better to run on. In the Philippines, youre just asking to get hit as drivers here really dont care about pedestrians (most, not all) and drivers own the road, what little of it there is. Its just a culture thing. Roads are for vehicles period and us runners should respect that too.
The one road I run on is wide enough for 4 cars to be side by side. Still, there are cars that drive straight at me with no oncoming traffic. Wtf. Just make a little room.
He was running with the traffic in the dark without the proper lighting and reflective clothing.
Correct
Distracted driving is at a critical level. Having said that, the above comment needs to be copied and pasted 1000X.

AGREED, people finding things to do while driving is not new...reading, makeup and so on in the past...phones have made it crazy.

I think he fully accepted what he could’ve done better. My point is people need to be paying attention also… He wasn’t invisible.
Totally agree with the this. Anytime I am road running, I am on the defensive and watching every car that could be a threat at any intersection.
I didn’t watch his video but around here people will run IN THE STREET when there’s a freaking sidewalk and people on bicycles ride on highways with zero shoulder where the speed limit is 60mph…. No one should get hit but doing those things puts urself in harms way

Yep if they are REALLY looking its hard to miss...

Smarter cars, more distracted drivers.

Well sometimes trails can fight back😂😂

I am sure cycling is even more dangerous because you ride with traffic and can't react as well..and there is more speed. Crazy.
I quit riding my road bike a long time ago. Now I just ride my mountain bike on designated trails or the woods.
I had a gun pulled on me because I was 'on the road'. I was also shot at by two gang-members. Plus lot's of things thrown at me and cigarette smoke blown at me at stop lights among other things.

I ran in the forest nowadays. I feel much more safe in the forest than in the city ❤

It's getting worse.
I see it getting worse for sure.
