Gota love revolvers. First thang I carried when I started law enforcement back in 1981. I retired in 2017. I still got a s&w mod 58 and a mod 10 and a mod 60. Wish I had kept my 3 colts. The mod 60 I got is only a 38.

I feel like revolvers are underrated for carry...semi-autos get all the good press. I've got a S&W 442 with Hogue grips that's about perfect.

I bought one when they came out and its been my carry ever since. No complaints, no problems. I shot 357's a lot and its great. But .38+p is really smooth going through. The regular .38 special is a great one handed round if you want to just go out and pop off a few rounds.

I bought mine in 2005 and fired a lot of magnums through it. About 10 years later the indexing and timing was all off. I sent it back to S&W and they fixed it up and sent it back with a note saying "practice with .38's and don't shoot Magnums all the time"

Also J frames are not made for lots of magnum use, the guns won't hold up. I have a major beef with S&W over this issue. By that I mean, chambering guns for calibers which they can't handle a steady diet of.

My first carry handgun (not my first handgun) was a slightly used Chief Special from the '60s with a 3 inch barrel. I fired friends' Smiths and Detective Specials with 2 inch barrels and it always made me glad I chose a 3 inch barrel. It took me many and several decades (and dozens of terrific polymer pistols) but I finally bought (last year) a model 60 with a 3 inch barrel. I've fired more .357 round than .38 special rounds through it, but frankly, after the first cylinder of .357 rounds I knew what was going on and what I had to do. Granted, I have decades of shooting all kinds of calibers behind me, but it is such a sweet shooter that I think anyone can do as well as I do, with consistent hits out to 50 yards. But I do recommend that 3 inch barrel.

Owning a firearm is a major responsibility, regular practise is crucial no matter how experienced you are. sometimes I instruct first timers at the range, and some of them can fire a whole box at man-sized target at 10 yards and hit nothing but the ceiling or someone else's target.

The “coke bottle” boot grip really helps with 357 mag recoil. It’s worth looking into. Plus this pistol is heavier than a LCR so if you’re looking for a small frame revolver and want that 357 mag, the 640 (DA only) or 60 (DA/SA) is a great choice. Highly recommend

This is my daily carry. I’ve got it set up with large Pachmayr gripper grips, a tritium fiber optic sight, a bobbed hammer, and the cylinder is cut for moon clips. As far as I’m concerned it’s the perfect carry revolver, and I’ve probably got more trigger time on this than any other pistol.

Back in the day, my mother carried a weapon like this until they "upgraded" to the Baretta. She hated that weapon. Later, they upgraded to the Glock 19. She hated that weapon. After she retired, we tried to get her to fall in love with a Glock 27. She hated it and went back to that damn old .357 that she kept either in her purse or in the magazine(for reading material) in her recliner with a damn riot gun next to it.
Her thing was if "they" kicked her door in, she would get them with the .357 that was now stoked with Hornaday Critical defense rounds. If that didn't stop "them" she had the 12 gauge ready to go as if she was still on patrol.
I'm thinking of carrying that old blaster thinking if you can't stop it in six, you're gone anyway. Well, I don't know. Maybe it'll be my back up.

I understand her hatred of semi autos but the 19 is a very good gun, along with the 43x. Has she ever held a 43x in her hands? It fits mine like a glove.

This is one of the videos that led me to purchase my own Model 60 with a 3" barrel, and I have been very happy with it. The longer barrel really makes all the difference, it points and shoots like a normal gun when you're aiming. I always shoot double-action, and it's accurate enough with my 38spl level loads that I could use it for short range hunting of small game.
The Model 60 pairs very well with the Model 63, which is practically identical except it shoots 8 rounds of 22LR. Can't recommend either of them highly enough. Adjustable sights should be standard on everything!

In my experience FWIW you are certainly right, in the services for many years we had to shoot 'double tap' qualifications with 250 rounds of .357 magnum in a range day using a short barrel Ruger Speed Six and while that conditioned you well it was always a challenge and producing a reliable double tap hit was work. Doing the same thing with a .38 Special +P was actually a pleasure, it was surprising how much benefit it provided.

I've had a model 60 3 inch barrel for almost a year. It's a great trail gun, powerful, and doesn't carry that much different than my 642. Lately I've cooked up a hot 38+p+ reload that I've been shooting out of the model 60, it's a good compromise between power and recoil without the punch of a full house .357.

Heck yeah, I've had a 3" version of the Model 60 for about 5 years now. It is my go to carry in grizzly country maybe 2 or 3 weeks per year of shorter trips. I would rather avoid the rascals so I haven't had to use it on anything thank heaven, but I did pull it once when one got way too close...disappeared (gulp!!)...then ran off. It is not as much fun to shoot the .357mags as it is the .38's but for a 3" gun it is well balanced and accurate for me at least out to 20 yds. It's a beauty too after putting wood grips on.

I have a Smith & Wesson model 586-3 and that is definitely a usable revolver for 357s. I just purchased the model 60 with a 2.125 in barrel and though it can take 357s I will be using 38+p to use when I'm concealed carry. Though I've never been in a self-defense predicament I can only imagine how much different that would be than shooting at the range and with the more unpredictability of the 357 in this gun I'll just feel a bit more confident with the 38 + P's in it.
I enjoy your videos and have watched them with other revolvers. I'm more of a revolver person and favor more of the Smith & Wesson and you have a lot of the videos in your library of these. Keep up the good work!

I couldn't agree more with everything you said, but you just cant argue the ballistic difference, even in a snub nose. I do carry .38+p a lot in the airwights though. Wonderful carry option and very easy to control with 38 +p ammo. I also have a model 360 sc, scandium frame 357 magnum. Off the top of my head I think it weighs 11 ounces empty. Love Hickok’s videos and he always makes great points but I would like to mention that with a revolver like this you don’t have only two choices for self defense ammo - 38 special +p or full power 357. There are many loads that are more like 38 special +p+ if there were such a thing. Speer makes the Short Barrel Gold Dot 135 grain 357 and Buffalo Bore has two or three lower recoil low flash 357’s that would be perfect for the model 60.
    Just my two cents.

I call it my gut buster. You're not going to shoot no long-distance shots through it , it's my for up close and personal. I wish that had maybe a 357 sometime for concealed carry but 38 + P will do a wonderful job. I think the last 357 I had why is a Ruger Security Six . Hey mr. Hickok!!! Been watching your videos for a little while now and I absolutely love the content, I recommend your channel to many. And I have a quick question, would you ever consider reviewing scopes? Maybe give a run down of sighting in a scope or iron sights and scope/sight terms and jargon?

I have a 3", it's a great little kit gun. Magnums are a handful, but if you practice with them they're totally manageable, at least with the 3". I put hogue grips on mine and it fit's my hands real well. The phrase, "carry alot and shoot a little" is exactly right. But you should shoot it full magnum now and then if you're going to carry it. The more full magnums you shoot through it the more the confidence comes up and the fear/anticipation of the POP declines.

Couldn't agree more. My favorite caryy is a 640 Pro (357) that I carry with 38+P. I like the weight it is and easily conceals in my front pocket. I have a .44 and a .460 XVR so recoil isn't something I always avoid, but the .38 in my 640 just makes sense.

Have had one of these for 2 years and absolutely love it. Polished it up to a bright mirror finish. However, contemplating dropping coin on a M19 Carry Comp. The J Frame is great and have 4 of them, but shooting 357 out of it does a number on your hand after a couple cylinders; hence my inquiry into the 19 Carry Comp.

I have the 360, same gun but blued out with tan rubber grips. You put it quite well. Firing .357 magnum out of those will sting just a bit. Its not unmanageable, but you will feel it. I fire it with .38+ like you did. If you use regular .38, it is a fun gun to fire.

Nice video as always. I’ve been carrying my model 60 for 15 years and agree completely with the .38+p ammo being plenty the handful for a defensive situation. I enjoy range .38’s at the range and the step up to the +p is noticeable but manageable. It’s reasonable to conclude that a hornaday ftx backed by a +p charge would positively change the course of an assailant’s immediate behavior. I reserve my magnum rounds for my house guns the 686+ and the 19 k comp. a two handed grip in the comfort of my home is reliable, but cowboy style single handed shooting this model 60 with full house .357 mags will be left up to somebody else. My 2 cents.

I carry an airweight .38 everyday at work. Very concealable. I work in a high crime area and don't want to be unarmed. Every gun has its place. The Glock 19 is in the backpack and on me when out of work. I have found this diversity very important. It can also be a good dual gun back up option. The airweight in my opinion is a necessity.
