I carried the 4" model 19 as a duty weapon for over 10 years as a Deputy Sheriff in Ohio! And the 2.5" model 19 as my off duty weapon, which i sold so to purchase my wife ( then fiance) an engagement ring, we were married about six month and she brought it back! That was 38 yrs ago! All legally owned pistols and revolvers had to be handed in, compensation was paid and we ended up with Cap & Ball Black Powder revolver and Lever Action carbines in .357 and .,44 Mag. Now we are allowed Long Barrelled Revolvers in .357, 44 Mag, 45 LC which must be 61cm (24") from muzzle to wrist brace/counter weight, and similar Long Barrelled Pistols but only in .22LR with a maximum magazine capacity of 10 rounds.

Your missfire brought back some memories for me, if you don't mind I'll share mine. After a perticularly grilling two weeks guarding a highest seciruty site in Germany, some 60Kms from the East German border in 1967, we had some fun on the ranges with our personal issue Sterling Sub Machine guns. We fired on our backs, knees, sideways, upside down and even on auto which was strictly forbiden owning to the muzzle shift. then Tada. 5 rounds 25 yards 5 seconds exposure. 1. off 2. off 3. click. Right arm up and right foot back shout "Stoppage !" recharge weapon, 3. off, two rounds on the ground. Refit them in mag. 4. off then as the 5th round went off the target turned. "Cor f****g hell" came from my rear right, someone else went over ... same. We cleared guns. "no live rounds or empty cases in my possession Sir !", then moved forward to see the grouping. Ahem .... 3 rounds in 1.5" group centre. 1 round approx 2.5" north west of centre and a line exactly half the diameter of the 9mm round cutting straight across the taget dead centre, you could clip a round into either side of the target ! Oops. couldn't do that again don't think. That target hung in the Padderborn NAAFI for some years afterwards. As a tank gunner luckily I never experinced a missfire with a 17 ponder 20 or 105mm, thank God. the gunner has to remove the misfire from the gun/turret, then walk it 200 yards up range then ..... run like f**k !

I have a 4" Model 19 myself, I absolutely love the gun. She's accurate, fun to shoot. I'm not a big guy and wanted to make it my carry gun. So I got some rosewood scales to make it slightly more compact and a shoulder holster I wear under any vest, jacket or coat depending on the season. I can't say enough good things about it, just that dumping .357 at a range gets pretty expensive.
What I love about the gun as a first gun (had a friend who showed and let me try a lot of guns before I got the Model 19) was that there is no jams, decent capacity (6 vs 9 for most), and very great accuracy. The 4 inch barrel also gives it great stability. And there is no spring wear due to keeping it loaded. The ONLY downside (for me) is it is not a tuck in the waistband and go. But while my mother's gun has 9 rounds (She has a 9mm) she has room for one spare mag. We're both carrying 18 rounds on our person fully kitted out.
My mother can't carry my revolver concealed, even with a coat. She's much shorter than I am and on her, it prints something fierce no matter what she does. So she needed something a lot more compact. I have a rather long, lean body that lends itself well to hanging stuff under the shoulders.
To any new shooter, I'd recommend the Model 19 as a great firearm. But what you actually carry should very based on how much work you're willing to do putting it on. How well you can wear it and keep it concealed. I'd say having a firearms enthusiast friend who lets you try various configurations out before you buy anything is the best bet. My mother is kinda wishing she had a .38 Special concealable now.

Ditched the barney fife grips for the hogue mono and replace the front ramp for a green fiber optic. They aren't dovetailed. Actually had to get one for a short barrel and sp101 for it to work. Roll pin and all. Once I did this it's a modern classic tactical. I own 5 glocks. Love them. If I could only own one... Give me my security six. Best of both worlds.

More Semi Autos are being produced due to their popularity leaving less revolvers to be made. Revolvers also use steel frames where as semi autos may use aluminum or a steel polymer which are less expensive and easier to produce. Revolvers require more precision machines to manufacture along with the higher priced pieces needed to make them is why they cost more.

And I would hate to call S&W. The three screws for the bottom picatinny rail were out of spec and would not go in. I called S&W customer service and they sent me new ones. But just as Mr. Hickok 45 felt, if I knew i was going into battle and had to carry a revolver, the R8 is the one I would take. Yes the 686s are good guns, great even and every bit as good or better for some purposes and the the 686p would come in a close second for choice in a battle, but the R8 wins hands down. Another thing that wasn't brought up is the ease and speed of reloading with the moonclips.
