    The .357 magnum is, to me, the pistol caliber equivalent of the .30-'06. It will do everything you can reasonably expect from a handgun, the recoil is manageable for most people, with practice, and it's extremely versatile.

    First impact of each caliber tells the story. The rest depends on placement.

    • @russellkeeling4387
      @russellkeeling4387 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Placement is correct. There are places on a cinder block that are stronger than other areas of the blocks structure. Hitting the block at the very ends and the very center are the stronger spots of a block. In the center of either cavity is the weakest point of the blocks wall. So for a good test the shots need to be fired at the same location for at least the first shot to get an accurate example of comparative power. I think this video shows that well. He also shoots well.

    Remember folks, current .357 mag is loaded about 200fps slower than the .357’s of thirty years ago. This was done when manufacturers began chambering small J-frame sized pistols in .357. Frames couldn’t take it, so the loadings were quietly reduced behind the scenes. Gotta get custom ammo to get those old 1500fps velocities.

      For what? We have vids of a .357 shooting in a closed room where the muzzle blast burst the eardrums of the shooter. Get real. The 40 S&W is a far superior round for a gunfight where you have to come up on armed attackers and walk away. The shot victims complained of the extreme pain they were in if they lived through the 90+ % one shot kills. And they never needed double tap until 9mm became the standard. And my forty holds more than twice the rounds of 357. And reloads faster unless you are Jerry Michulek.And please don't forget, the 165 grain 40 has the best wound channel of the other big two including the 45acp.

    If I lived in the state's my CCW would be a .357 revolver. Seems like it has top tier knockdown power and would have to take each shot carefully as not to expend ammo capacity. Feel this would make you calmer in such a scenario (slow is fast) as well as making sure each shot fired can be justified in court which would also limit potential stray rounds hitting innocent bystanders.

  • @LemmyK72
    @LemmyK72 2 ปีที่แล้ว +56

    I own many revolvers, and many semi auto pistols. I, personally, prefer a revolver ONLY as an offensive situation, hunting round for big or dangerous game. The 357 is a great all around caliber. I own a 357, which I have used in taking multiple javelina. For bigger game, I use a 454 casull,...not because it's a big "Macho" gun, but because I actually shoot it very accurately.
    Now when talking defense, or a "save your butt" round,.... human or animal,.... the one that I would trust my life to, is my glock 22 40 cal.
    I know some are laughing thier asses off right now. Why would I choose a round that has less than 1/3 the power of my 454.
    Simple answer, VOLUME. Why make one hole when you can make 8? Why inflict injury on one area , when you can inflict injury on many areas?
    Short of an elephant , or the" boss" of a Cape buffalo, what skull will a 40 cal not penetrate?
    In an emergency situation,....in 3 seconds I can put 8 to 10 rounds down range, (with more at the ready,)....rather than one, maybe two from a revolver. Also the ability for "autos" to quickly reload is a major plus in a less than favorable black bear or hog situation . Some people have a stigma that semi autos are only to be used as a defense weapon for a human attacker.
    A threat is a threat, right?
    What about penetration "? A 40 cal will go through a black bears head with no problem. The penetration of a 40 cal, especially the FMJ is very impressive in tests that have been conducted. The hollow points, like the one from hornady, make a killer permanent cavity.
    Now for the big bears...grizzly and polar, different story, ....a 12ga with slug/ buck /slug/ buck/ slug, would be my choice,.....but for ANYTHING else , I'll take my 40 aII day long.
    Anyways, just thought that I'd throw that out there, either for conversation, or for those that think I'm full of beans ,.......a good laugh. 😁👍

      The absolutely best semi auto handgun round ever is....10mm. .40 is admittedly 10mm short by EVERYONE in the practical shooting community. In the revolver category, for controllability, ease of training, and versatility, .357 wins. .44 magnum takes the cake as a professional grade caliber. The .40 was pushed on us as a more user friendly alternative because of the rush to more inclusive personnel requirements( girls and more law careerists vs good guy shooters). I bought the XD instead because of the ammo capacity. I don't regret it because after shooting several Glocks in various calibers, My XD chambered in .40 was still more manageable for me even compared to a 9mm Glock. The FBI switched back to 9mm because after doing extensive testing with dozens of different types of HP ammo they discovered many different things. One of them was that 9mm on average produced 40% to 60% more total volume of tissue damage than both 40sw or 45 acp. There's a good 2 part video series on youtube that goes over the many reasons the FBI gave. The 2nd video goes more into detail about the actual testing results. The 1st video goes over just the summary. Watching both parts is best. The videos are titled " The FBI Returning to 9mm Ammo " and it was done by the Dynamic Prepper youtube channel.

    Seeing the similar and repeated results of each bullet type/weight, it would have been illustrative to line up several blocks deep for each caliber to estimate the knockdown power of each.

    I still have and shoot regularly a 1st run Ruger Security 6 my dad bought new when I was 10. It has thousands of rounds through it and has never missed a beat.
    My home defense load out is 2 plastic cap snake rounds to blind them, 2 .38 and last 2 are 158 grain HP...

    The blocks were destroyed sufficiently after shot #6 for 9x19, shot #4 for .40, and shot #4 for .357 mag. Very impressive results from all cartridges.

      The 357 out performed the 40 by a mile..

      @@jackhammer0101 The difference in initial shots from all three were barely noticeably different. You could maybe argue the .357 did slightly more than the 9x19 through sheer energy, but it could just as easily have been from differences in shot placement with the second shot and on. No cartridge outperformed the others by miles.
