Woodworker here, great job! Some tips for next time: - A brush is great for spreading the glue evenly, but if you can't find one next time you can just use your finger. Wood glue is just slightly modified PVA glue (school glue) so it's totally fine to get on your hands (unless the bottle says otherwise). - You do normally need to clamp the wood when you're gluing, but applying weight is also fine (I'd go for more than you had there if you can, like maybe rest one end of a sofa on it, or a pot full of water). If you're going to be adding screws anyway then they can do the clamping for you. - I don't know about that specific brand, but wood glue usually needs 20-30 minutes to set, and then 24 hours to fully cure. - In a beefier project you also want to be careful about trying to glue endgrain (the ends of the wood) together since it's not as strong, but as with the glue drying and the clamping it's totally fine here since it only has to stand up to the cats. Wood glue is incredibly strong when clamped well and fully cured, so for a light-use job like this it's going to do great regardless. - The weakest part of your build is going to be the join between the back and the base. I didn't see how many screws you used, but as long as there's a few in there you'll be fine with pretty much whatever. - If you want to be more sure it won't fall over, next time you could attach the back further forward on the base, so part of the base sticks out the back as a kind of foot. You could still use those brackets for that if you want; they can screw into your back panel and sit on the floor. - If you don't want to break out the hot glue you can use a light coating of wood glue on the cardboard too, since it's all wood fibres at the end of the day. - That saw you have is a Japanese ryoba saw and they're very popular with woodworkers the world over for their accuracy and flexibility. The hacksaw blade you have will work on wood but is probably designed for metal. Hope some of this is reassuring!
I'm glad I'm not the only one to pick up on all of that, great advice there. The hacksaw blade looked like a 32 TPI blade to me so definitely for steel or other harder metals, an 18 TPI blade does a reasonable job cutting wood but is kinda slow still.
But it's a good balance :) We can listen to Rachel and watch the cats. She's not being ignored, and I think she prefers it instead of the camera being squarely on her. But I'm also sure you're just joking with your comment, lol.

Omg. That noise overstimulation sensory issue is definitely not just you. The sudden anxiety and rage that results in are familiar feels for me too. I felt myself getting anxious just from you describing that situation 😂
Dear Rachel Anxiety, stress and heavy thoughts can feel so overwhelming in one's life. Like it seems beyond one's control and ruins everything. I really hope you remember to take of yourself amidst the rising popularity of your channels. After all remember - *NOTHING* is more important than your happiness :) With great love from all your fans ;)
I could never figure out why I was so sensitive to noise and had such bad anxiety. Then I realized a year ago that I'm autistic and it's been really game-changing for me. I'm happy to see you using things to help you with your anxiety when going into stores, but can I say that I do feel like you may be autistic, we also have sensitivities to food textures, and also love researching stuff. I'm in autism groups for women on Facebook and it's been so eye-opening knowing that other people have these difficulties, and I wasn't just being sensitive. It also helped me better take care of myself and know my limits. I'm much happier and my anxiety has pretty much halved.

3:12 Ah yes! Sensory overload! Not just you :C Apparently it happens a lot in people with anxiety. And other stuff (I got anxiety and ADHD so that's a combo right there)
That looks great! I would highly reccomended putting the L brackets on the front. Even though they are not going to be fully flush since the wood is a bit warped, it will add extra stability to the top. As the cats pull on it (scratch the cardboard) alot of the force is going to be pulled towards the cat. Especially with how tall it is, you don't want the wood to crack at the base and cause the top to fall on the cats.
I wear my noise canceling headphones at home too since my partner and I share an office. It’s so helpful when one of us in a meeting and the other has to concentrate on their work. 😅
I think they're also a life saver if you have an infant, particularly a colicky infant. Ear plugs or noise canceling headphones can really help preserve your patience and let you stay calm and loving towards a loudly unhappy baby.

@@racketman2u Yep, or maybe with the wrong ruler... I've found lots of ways to screw up a cut. Oh, or measure twice, cut once but cut off part of your finger in the process. It didn't grow back. 🙄
The sexy music every time Haku licked his belly killed me! And the editing was * chef's kiss * as always! Also, thank you for addressing the overstimulation. I sometimes have major sound overstimulation that makes it hard to function as a human- I just wanna curl up into a ball and plug my ears when it's really bad, not to mention I have chronic headaches. I'll definitely be looking into those headphones!
Sadly my cat past away a couple of years ago we think it might have been the same thing but she did have a happy life but we had to make her a few cat onesies, it helped a lot. We added a Velcro opening at her back and even had little sleeves. I hope haku is okay and wish you all well ❤️❤️
My old 17 year old blind cat died a few weeks ago and now I can't stop spoiling my other two cats! I just bought a new high quality cat tower (the old one is half destroyed but now sits at the other end of the house). And I just ordered a 'Da bird' cat wand toy... I think I've seen you use them on your channel and they look really good.
Your cats are wonderful. I watched a documentary once about getting very close to animals so that they trust you absolutely. One can tell that your cats trust you both and know they are a treasured part of your family.
It’s not just you Rachel! I also find that overstimulation in public can trigger intense anxiety. For me it’s usually loud and busy restaurants. You just made me feel so understood!
Pichi is the cutest thing ever when she's being so comfortable with you two and the other 3 cats I'm so glad you took her in it warms my heart seeing people take in cats who have nowhere else to go or who don't get adopted from shelters because of a specific problem or reason ^^
My friend's cat has the same itching allergy problem. He seems to be doing better since she moved from an apartment surrounded by concrete buildings to a house with a yard. She thinks being able to see trees and birds etc from the window has made him happier and less bored which has helped with the allergy.
I think that this perspective on how these headphones can be used is better than a lot of others. For people who suffer from anxiety while shopping or out doing “normal” activities is really relatable.
i can't wait for the day we get to see pichi in a jun's kitchen video because if poki can be in a jun's kitchen video, then i'm sure pichi can as well one day :)
Great outcome! DIY projects are always so satisfying (when they work out). Bet it’ll look great in the new house. I got one of those Japanese saws recently, and learned how useful they are. The two sides of teeth, one is for cutting across grain, and one is for cutting along the grain. Because it cuts on the pull stroke, it does really straight cuts with the blade tension on a pull motion (western saws are push stroke). Blade is thin, making really fine cuts. With the flexibility, it can do flush cuts (dowels on a flat surface). Because it has no spine, it can cut through thick slabs or logs. Just like Jun’s kitchen knives, these saws are made to cut really well! Just have to make sure there are no nails in the timber as the blades are quite delicate. But, the saw is like 3-in-1, very good value!
I am definitely going to do this for our cats! I'm a foster Mom and currently have 9 foster cats/kittens and 12....yes 12, of our own cats. We go through so many scratch pads even with having 4 cat towers with sisal rope and two scratch mats made of weaved sisal. Thank you for the idea and honest tutorial!
I got a Rachel & Jun Bokksu ad today with Poki in his boat just chillin on the counter in the background and now a new video today too? Nice. And poor Haku looks very fashionable, he has donned his cat-apron to join Jun in the kitchen after all these years watching from atop the fridge!
I couldn't help but laugh each time the metal music started xD all you cat video make me want to have my own cats, I can't wait to have an apartment and finally unleash my cat lady side!
So sorry to see Haku in distress. He was the rock of the cat world. Loved watching him in the bike basket. One of our (SLC) PBS stations had "Pet Wars" as closure for a pledge drive. My 2 cat boys Buck & Tigger got announced for their cat contribution. Scoring is both by sheer number + dollars earned. Cats almost won!
I was JUST about to get up and be productive for the day then the notification for this popped up. It was like: Phone: ik you need to get stuff done today.... But CATS!!! 🐱🐱🐱🐱🐱 (Worth it)
For the next project a few nails/screws can help when you don't have clamps. Your second saw is a push saw, you only push to cut, it's a different motion than a western saw since the teeth are facing the other direction. As far as the wood glue, let it ooze out, wait 10-20mins for ti to dry a little bit then you can scrape it off easily.
Some of you may remember that we build a corner scratcher a few years ago at our old apartment. We put little nubbies on it to prevent it from tipping over... but they didn't prevent it from tipping over. So uh, in retrospect, don't recommend that design lmao

@@racketman2u Yep, or maybe with the wrong ruler... I've found lots of ways to screw up a cut. Oh, or measure twice, cut once but cut off part of your finger in the process.
It didn't grow back. 🙄
Rachel: pitches sound cancelling headphones
I relate to this. Pre-pandemic I used to wear mine out... I miss being able to go out.
I hope haku is okay and wish you all well ❤️❤️
dude! dont talk like that now im worried about Haku :(
My old 17 year old blind cat died a few weeks ago and now I can't stop spoiling my other two cats! I just bought a new high quality cat tower (the old one is half destroyed but now sits at the other end of the house). And I just ordered a 'Da bird' cat wand toy... I think I've seen you use them on your channel and they look really good.
Awwe poor Haku! Hope he gets well soon, poor baby.
Your cats are wonderful. I watched a documentary once about getting very close to animals so that they trust you absolutely. One can tell that your cats trust you both and know they are a treasured part of your family.
oh my goodness hakuuuu 😔💕💕 hope he feels a lot better soon
It’s not just you Rachel! I also find that overstimulation in public can trigger intense anxiety. For me it’s usually loud and busy restaurants. You just made me feel so understood!
One of our cats uses the scratching board as a lounging throne - he looks very regal ;)
Pichi is the cutest thing ever when she's being so comfortable with you two and the other 3 cats I'm so glad you took her in it warms my heart seeing people take in cats who have nowhere else to go or who don't get adopted from shelters because of a specific problem or reason ^^
Never once thought I’d hear Rachel description Poki as “Narrow” 😂
My friend's cat has the same itching allergy problem. He seems to be doing better since she moved from an apartment surrounded by concrete buildings to a house with a yard. She thinks being able to see trees and birds etc from the window has made him happier and less bored which has helped with the allergy.
you had so many quality tests before scratcher was fully assembled :D Poki was so impatient!
I think that this perspective on how these headphones can be used is better than a lot of others. For people who suffer from anxiety while shopping or out doing “normal” activities is really relatable.

We love you PICHI! OvX
YESSS 💖💖💖💖✨✨✨
i can't wait for the day we get to see pichi in a jun's kitchen video because if poki can be in a jun's kitchen video, then i'm sure pichi can as well one day :)
Little did you know you were making a bed for Nagi.
Soooooo are they just keeping Pichi? I hope so she's good girl lol
Yeah I think they're keeping her!
Yup! They said they were originally planning to foster her but they’re gonna keep her now
I got a Rachel & Jun Bokksu ad today with Poki in his boat just chillin on the counter in the background and now a new video today too?
Truly living that Animal Crossing New Horizons life. Building a house and doing DIYs at the same time. Iconic.
I always love watching your videos❤️. It feels like hanging out at a friend's house while they're doing something and chatting with them.
Haku be looking like a housewife with apron XD
I love that your DIY isn't perfect. Makes me feel like I can make it too! ♥
Alternate title video: making something special for your cats to be happy.
💖Love the project. It's so nice to see them enjoy it so much.
I was JUST about to get up and be productive for the day then the notification for this popped up.
It was like:
Phone: ik you need to get stuff done today.... But CATS!!! 🐱🐱🐱🐱🐱
(Worth it)
For the next project a few nails/screws can help when you don't have clamps. Your second saw is a push saw, you only push to cut, it's a different motion than a western saw since the teeth are facing the other direction. As far as the wood glue, let it ooze out, wait 10-20mins for ti to dry a little bit then you can scrape it off easily.
haku's maid outfit looking pretty tho
in all seriousness, hope he gets better soon!!
he became an anime maid-girl xD
Y'all are a joy to watch. You have a great sense of humor and cute cats.
