    Just a hint... the small birds like sparrows prefer to forage on the ground, as do pigeons, if you have those visiting. I've had a bird feeder for many years and we put paving slabs beneath, so the seed spills onto those and less onto the ground where it will germinate and give you a jungle.
    The birds will eat the spillage but rain does what water always does, causes seeds to grow. No matter what type of bird feeder you have seed will end up underneath. Yours is pretty darn clever and ingenious though, so congratulations! Well done! 😊👍😘🤗💖

    • @Iflie
      @Iflie ปีที่แล้ว +63

      Yeah they will still use it but at first sprinkle some underneath so they find it and then explore. They often like it if other birds like starlings make a total mess and then go eat the spilled seed on the floor. But I think it's a good spot near the tree for some of the more shy birds to use it too.

      @@xRAINxOFxBLOODx It takes 7-10 days for mosquito eggs to grow to maturity, so getting a lightweight bird bath that you can easily empty and refill frequently will keep mosquitos from reproducing, and will ensure the water is fresh and healthy for the birds. It also makes the base easier to clean.
      A large but shallow metal or plastic container is perfect - you can put a few heavy rocks in it to keep it from blowing away, and for birds to perch on. I love the look of the stone and ceramic ones, but I find them too heavy to be convenient. My parents use a cake pan on an outdoor table, and it's perfect.

    Hey Rachel, dont worry, theyll probably go to your birdfeeder eventually, when its been there for a while and has been deemed "not dangerous" by the birds. Sometimes though, birds prefer plain wood as supposed to painted things, I dont know if its the smell of the paint or "weird color = bad" from the point of view of the birds, but they seem to prefer just wood/natural ( a coat of some kind of waterprofing "varnish" or something might still be a good idea so it doesnt rot right away, or at least on the roof). That said, food is a great motivator, theyll come. Just be patient. I had to give away the birdhouse I made because birdhouses and birdfeeders are against the rules where I live. But it made another person very happy, so (shrugs). Are you going to make a birdbath too ? Water is often a good way of drawing both birds and other animals too like hedgehogs, both for them drinking but also cleaning themselves. I have two, one just on the ground and another one that is a bit elevated. Very popular with the birds. I change the water often.

    Shiny objects scare birds when sun reflects off it. Like, it's recommended to put shiny objects (foil for example) on trees to protect berries and fruits. So maybe you should paint the coin roof to make it less shiny?

    • @ILuvAyeAye
      @ILuvAyeAye ปีที่แล้ว +19

      I read a really interesting book called Fuzz about human tensions with animals, and it said that studies suggest that passive deterrents (things like foil, scarecrows, fake owls, etc) don't work to keep birds away over time - I think it slows down birds from approaching at first, but they get used to it quickly (like in less than a week) and then ignore it.
      If she doesn't have any bird interest in a couple weeks, she might try covering the roof with something and seeing if it improves, but I don't think it will keep away birds for too long.

    The voiceover at the ending was very funny, Rachel! I’m sure it will all pan out, eventually, and you will have birds enjoying your beautiful feeder. Great job to Jun for digging the hole, in that racket from the cicadas, to put the feeder and pole into.

    I wish Rachel could see this giant country house that I pass by when I travel sometimes because this house has like 20 or more GIANT immaculate bird mansions? Castles? Omg. They are amazing. I think one of them is a replica of the Canadian Parliament building. It's insane how cute they all are set up around the property.

  • @Nina-gf1fv

    don't worry Rachel, some birds - like sparrows - prefer to eat right of the ground, in open arreas, while other birds prefer to eat higher up! you can experiment with where you put the tree and different hights

    As someone who likes the feeling of biting stuff, wood has this sorta satisfying bite to it (soft woods) and is very stimulating, I find it helps me focus extra energy. Also I kinda like the taste, do I have a problem...maybe.

    • @SaintShion
      @SaintShion ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Sounds like Pica if you actually eat the wood, if you don't eat it could be an anxiety disorder. But that's my opinion, I'd suggest seeing a Doctor. Be careful of splinters XD

      I mean I can fully understand that. different textures leads to different sensory reactions, and if you’re biting it you’re probably looking for that specific reaction. eating wood though would definitely count as pica I think (like the other comments have pointed out). you might want to look into types of chew toys maybe?

    My brother and I had to dig in the summer heat lately as well, but in the Netherlands. It was doable. RIP our 14 year old cat. Instead of sleeping on top of his catnip, he can now forever sleep under it
    We're quite sad, but we know our cat lived his life to the fullest and there was no saving him in the end. He had pills twice a day for his heart like 5 years. He was able to run around, catch mice and do whatever up until his last week. We don't know what the exact reason was, but he was old and behaved sick all of a sudden, like he occasionally did before, but it was serious this time, though at least he didn't suffer too long. May your cats all have good lives while they're around as well
