      I built my first piece of furniture a few weeks ago, which was my bedframe. I spent TWO HOURS alone just trying to match up one piece with the holes because they weren't alinged. Total build time took me nine hours on my own. Skipped work the next day as I was tired and didn't go to bed until after 3AM (I really wanted to get my new mattress to start decompressing so as to not have to spend longer sleeping on the air mattress. In fact, because I finished so late, I felt it would be terrible to inflate the bed at that hour as the pump sounds like a vaccuum and might wake my neighbors...so I slept on the floor. Oh...my poor back and hips. My neighbors had better not EVER wake me up with noise after giving them that level of courtesy 😡).
      And I guess I stressed myself out too much with building the thing as I fell sick the day after. Good thing the mattress had pretty much expanded to its full size in just one day, so I had a real bed to crawl into and be miserable as I fought to get better 😂.
      Anywho, you're not alone at the "being bad at building/fixing things", lol. And kudos if you can do creative solutions to a building problem like what Rachel did!

      I'm just surprised fixing the couch only took one trip to the hardware store! They actually reused/repurposed supplies they had saved up from other projects.

    Trained sofa-maker here: Ironically, those springs are sold under the brand name NOSAG (like no-sag) and the plastic "thingy" that broke come in a metal variety as well (never heard of any of these ever breaking). In a pinch, you can try to find a metal hinge with bolt eyelets (female part) to attach the lose end or make a loop from those metal strips with evenly spaced holes you use in construction to re-attach the spring to the frame.

I'm pretty handy myself and the only solution I thought of right away given what broke is to nail/screw something that can hold the loop of the spring something really simple like a big nail bent to loop into itself or two screws bent together creating a loop for the spring to latch onto. that tiny screw solution is a Godsend it looks it, first time I've seen anything like it 👍👍

      Yeah I was just about to say the same thing! Staples are very dangerous for cats on cat towers/cat scratchers.

    • @aserta
      @aserta 2 ปีที่แล้ว +45

      Best solution is to double the rope. First layer, tightly wound and stapled with the round (cable staples) every 10 cm in random places. Then the second layer (the wear one), which is wound from the top down, and cross stitched (two cords going around then twisted and going in the other direction). It creates a seam, which itself becomes the strong part of the whole thing. If you repeat this on both sides, alternating the "stitch" by one layer, then it's nearly impossible to get it unwound, torn or broken. It will wear eventually, and need replacing, but it's the superior method.
      Caveat, if your pole is already thick, then it will be considerably thicker than original, which is why i usually put a hard lumber pole, which allows it to be thinner (so like 4 cm oak pole vs a thicker, but lesser wood like pine, a bit more expensive, but worth it).

    • @mikkurzhal7390
      @mikkurzhal7390 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@RachelandJunAdventures I can't suggest the best way to hold the rope down since your tower has dividers and usually i had just used the big staples that require a hammer, one on top and one on bottom. However:
      -- every few rows use a rubber mallet to tamp down the rope
      -- every 6-12 inches, wrap the most recently done section in packing tape to hold it in place while you continue

    Good job Rachel! I’m with you, nobody said it has to be perfect if it works. Especially if you can’t see it. For future references: 1. When selecting size of drill bit to use, hold it up behind the screw you’re using. It should be the same width minus the threads. 2. Rubbing the screw along a bar of soap helps it go into the wood easier. Happy handiwomaning!
