You have already done an outstanding job painting some of your figures incredibly at this small scale,and I am intrigued by how you will improvise the lighting electronics for your build. The best part of this hobby is to see different ways by different builders to achieve the finished build.Thanks Wayne for sharing your adventures and thanks also to Boyd at trekworks,Lou at Aztek dummy, Phil at sprueverse for helping to explain and expand on the knowledge base in this wonderful hobby!!

    Wayne good luck on the build. I did the 1/537 scale refit last year. It was an original 1980 smoothie version. I added LEDs and many photo etch and resign parts. Took me 6 months to build, 3 just to paint it. It's not as complicated as the 1:350 refit, don't know if I want to tackle that beasty. But god she is a beauty when done with the shimmering 4 color paint job. Enjoy it!

    I am just finishing up my build after about 7 months of steady work, and about to put final coat of Tamiya semi-gloss on it and call it done. I scratch built my lighting system using mostly LED strip lighting, with a few single LED bulbs or Mega lights for specific places like the deflector and impulse dishes. I will enjoy watching your series.

    I've built two of these - the 2nd of which I posted on my youtube channel on Matt's Model Shop. I thought it was going to be about 15 parts and it wound up being 28! It's a really big model and takes a lot of time, but boy is it worth it in the end. It's a beautiful model. The only advice I can give is to keep at it, and remember - it's just plastic! Be sure to look at all of the different builds out there, as there are tons of ways to get this thing built. And don't be afraid to ask questions. I'll be definitely watching this one! Good luck!

    Thank you Wayne for this project series. When I found the, 'Warp 8', light/sound kit from Trekmodeler I considered building this model. It was after watching the online tutorials by talented builder like yourself that convinced me to take it on. There is a lot to learn/know and plan to be successful in representing the 9 foot film model.
    I have designed/fabricated a metal stand that allows the model to pitch , up to 25 degrees from level, in any direction. With the Warp 8, I have added the landing lights for the shuttle bay, PE, MaskDesign masks for Aztek patterns and paint guide. Daler Rowney, 'Shimmering Colours' inks for the Aztek. Have 20 % done. Will take 10 months or more to finish.
    If interested there is a YT video of a 1/35 Moebius J2 I built titled,
    'Lost In Space Jupiter II Model', Made the metal stand to have the model in flight. Built the interior
    lighting (UV) and motorized the radar.

    Polar Lights make some great kits. I still have my 1/350 scale NX-01 enterprise kit I never finished. I started it but then decided to illuminate it and need to get another kit but I am not going to pay $600 for a unopened kit. Some one told me to email Round 2 that they can sell me the sprues I need individually to replace what I already glued together and what I am missing. Im thinking about trying this when I get back on my feet on my credit card and paypal debit.
    My plan for the kit when I stopped building and decided to illuminate it was to illuminate the entire kit like it was in the movie. The warp nacelles I was going to leave in clear frosted plastic and illuminate the warp chiller grills with blue LED strip lights and the bussard collectors with rotating red LED lights. This way when the kit is powered down it will look like it did in that one episode where they powered the NX01 down for a solar storm and taking refuge in the warp engines that were heavily shielded and would protect them from radiation. I then saw later on that they had a bunch of add on detail parts like the NX01 shuttle pods in 1/350 scale and someone at one time had a 3D printed shuttle bay to fit in place. They also had the aztec masks to spray the pattern on but they are out of production as well.
    I hope to do all that cause I would love to build the NX01 in 1/350 scale as I felt that was a very logical earth ship design. My second favorite design was the Galaxy and All Good Things Galaxy-X class dreadnought. My third favorite design was the Soverign class and then the old Constitution class was my fourth favorite design. The Constitution Refit Enterprise isnt a bad ship I just am not too crazy about the refit.
    I currently have a 1400:1 scale Enterprise C Ambassador class kit in clear transluscent plastic on my wish list as well as a 1400:1 scale Enterprise D kit in clear plastic, I want to pick two of these kits up as there is still resin aftermarket parts to build the Refit Enterprise D and I always loved that warship twist to the Galaxy class ship.

    With a bit of time you can make a beautiful Refit Enterprise with this kit. Made my kit a fair few years ago straight from the box, USS YorkTown, she's holding up pretty well. A friend of mine made the self destruct version from ST:TSFS,its quite impressive..

  • @GrandizerGo
    @GrandizerGo ปีที่แล้ว +2

    4 years too late for me... I started this project many many years ago, about 4 actually, and I got a good ways in, I noticed some of the problems as you did, but did not, do not have your more extensive background, my uncompleted model has light leaks all over, you could almost think the ship is exploding with the number of light leaks. Near the end of when I stopped, my eyesight was getting worse, hence I put it on hold when I found out I needed glasses, and I have never gone back to this model. A friend of mine was building it at the same time, far younger than I and she has better eyesight. :D And she continued on once I stopped. I have sent her the link to this video as I do not know if she finished hers or not. But to then add pain? to this, I started the Enterprise D build from the now defunct Eaglemoss, and have followed your videos as much as I was able to. I am behind, I am about 1/2 the way through the top Saucer section, and it does look very good, and HEAVY. :) But I have about 10 boxes I am behind in, and it was not until I noticed I had not been charged anything for a few months that I went online and found out they basically are no longer supporting the build any longer. The note on your channel about it being on hold was enough for me. :(

    I built one, it was just after the movie came out. The kit didn't have a light kit. Didn't know how to do the Aztec painting, so I used a few different colors of silver. I hand painted individual hull plates, windows, and other details. It took me a long time to finish. I lost my models in 2000, and everything else I owned. I hope I can build another.

  • @SkyrayModels
    @SkyrayModels ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Very best of luck with this monster build Wayne, you are sure going to have up and downs with this build, above all try and not get pressured into providing updates on the build, think it through and take advice if you need to. I am looking forward to seeing how you plan the lighting.
    This kit is a mojo killer, the road is littered with half built failed projects of this kit.
    I don't even think Lou has built a 1/350 refit which shows how difficult it can be.
    I have this kit and the resin Reliant 1/350 kit, just lack of spare time is stopping me, but I will tackle them one day.

  • @jonathanlin9772
    @jonathanlin9772 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hello Wayne, there a couple of things to look out for with your proposed electronics set up.
    1) the support rod will limit the size and number of insulated wires that can go through the rod. Suggest you have large cross section wires to carry power at high current with a low voltage drop to each section of the model and then thin wires to carry the logic or low current switching signals.
    2) arduino boards can only supply or accept a limited amount of total current for even LED lighting before failing.
    Suggest you have the arduino provide logic level signals only and use addressable neopixel or dotstar RGB or RGBW LED strips/rings/LEDS connected to the 5v high current power bus lines with arduino conected logic level signals to control the RGBW light levels of each LED in each seperate neopixel or Dotstar LED chain. Adafruit have some good Neopixel and dotstar libraries you can use.

    • @WorldofWayneUK
      @WorldofWayneUK  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have thought about that. Only dynamic lights will be going into the Arduino. Static lights will be powered directly with 12v rail. This will reduce the load going to the Nano. Additionally, I am only using white LED strips for main lights. I won't be using RGB. All other lights will be individual SMD.

  • @gb1701
    @gb1701 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I just received mine and can see this will be a bear of a project, especially given my experience is intermediate at best and I have only built the more common 1/537 and 1/1000 Star Trek models in the past. There are only two somewhat disappointments I have with this kit though:
    1. The fact Polar Lights sells the Aztec kit separate which costs an arm & a leg everywhere online and one can buy a whole second kit for the price of the decals. It really should be included with the kit, but obviously comes down to more revenue for them. Since most of my previous models lack Aztec, their inclusion is not as much an issue as wanting the alternative names and NCC numbers as I would like to make it something other than the Enterprise. But apparently one has to purchase the whole decal set to have that option.
    2. Other than the hanger/cargo deck, the officer's lounge and arboretum are pretty simplistic and cheap looking. I've seen much more detailed 3D printed versions online and think I'll definitely be replacing the versions included with the kit as well as adding a Recreation Deck that did not come with the model.
    Though to that last point, I honestly wonder how visible these parts will be from the outside since installing lighting is beyond my skill level. Since I've only seen fully lit examples of the model online, can anyone who built this kit without lighting tell me how well or not the interior pieces will be seen inside the hanger or through the windows and is there any way to maybe enhance their visibility without lights?

    • @WorldofWayneUK
      @WorldofWayneUK  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The visibility from the outside is my concern too. Nice to have it but I see why some peeps just frost the windows to hide what’s happening in there

    • @gb1701
      @gb1701 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WorldofWayneUK That's the thing. While I'd like to replace the included parts with more detailed ones, at the same time I don't want to waste money if they won't be very visible to begin with and in that case will just go with the cheaper looking ones. A good example of this is my 1/537 version that I attempted to jazz up by adding an aftermarket lounge and hanger and of which are pretty invisible unless one shines a bright flashlight on the areas from the outside in. I guess I just figured the 1/350 would be an improvement given the beefed-up scale.

    I bought one of these when they were first released along with a 1/350 NX-01 kit (and 1/72 C-57D). All are still languishing on the shelf as I have been to timid to start them. And, to be honest, wondering about where to put them once finished. My 1/350 Space Battleship Yamato already takes up more space than I had anticipated. This video may be the prompt I need.
    Are you thinking of adding crew figures to the bridge etc? You can source figures either in plastic or etched brass both from SF modelling (such as Yamato) or regular naval modelling. They certainly add a sense of scale to the Yamato.

But right now I am still working on the Deagonstini Millennium Falcon...up to issue 79!!! But there will still be plenty of painting and detailing to be done! I'm on my second one of these kits only because I totally screwed up the first one. My first mistake was putting the docking bay on the wrong side of the saucer then used the wrong paint as my base coat. I primed the whole thing then lightly sanded. when i applied my base coat as it dried it wrinkled up. Sanded the whole thing down and repainted. It did it again so i bought a second kit to start over. I'm fairly new to model building and am learning that I have a lot to learn.

      @@WorldofWayneUK - Not trying to be too much of a "know-it-all" kind of commenter, but if you have't yet purchased the Aztec Dummy masks, I would suggest checking out MaskDesign's masking set. It is the most accurate, and most robust masking set for the 1:350 refit out there. The full mask set has everything to paint not only all the aztec paneling, but also the name/numbers on the primary hull, as well as the entire strongback and pylon detailing.

    Fantastic! I've been watching the other two builds as well and will be following this one closely. Question - I'm very comfortable coding/wiring my own arduino lighting systems for other models. Are you planning on releasing/providing the arduino code and/or circuit diagrams for this? I've had this kit for 8 years and am also in the "this scares me" camp. I've also played with arduino controlled RGB LEDs...so much fun for a nice smooth transition from one color(s) to another. You should enjoy that!

    Putting the Electrics in the base is a much better way to do it, rather than (No disrespect to Phill S) trying to cram everything into the ship itself. Take your time, and don't be tempted to 'rush' any parts! I'm sure that Phil over at Sprueverse will do an excerlent job of it. Once again hope your dad is ok, and gets some enjoyment out of the train set.

    I hope you sand off the phaser banks on the upper and lower saucer primary hull. They are inaccurately raised rectangle surrounds on this kit, which is not accurate to the filming miniature.

    • @WorldofWayneUK
      @WorldofWayneUK  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The nipple are there but the base need to be flat. I need to order some tiny parts me thinks

    • @lestatdelc
      @lestatdelc ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@WorldofWayneUK - Correct.
      The round turrets are there, but the yellow surround to the two turrets is flat "safety" paint, and not a raised panel (like the kit has it). Also since you mention you will likely be adding the hull number spotlight (from the A/B deck) leaving the raised panel will also mess up the thrown floodlight effect by creating a box shadow. Sanding it flat and adding in half-dome beads for the turrets will go a long way to not introducing the stepped shadow from the errant added "panel".
      You can also try sanding down the raised "panels" (the duck-egg blue semi-circle with the white sectioning lines) just in front of the main floodlight alcove on the bridge (which is were the floodlight is suggested to be coming from) as that is also painted on, in the filming miniature and not an actual raised panel. That will give you slightly more space for the floodlight to cast the light onto the hull number/name. The angle of the crown on that ledge is also ever-so-slightly steeper/sharper on this kit than the filming miniature, which also causes more light to be blocked from the floodlight source than needs to be.
