      Chinese three eyes handgonne survived until the end of the 18th century. They had a lot of versions with spear /trident point on the cannon /butt of the handgonne, or even a glaive blade. In general, the ming dynasty tried to make a lot of versions of multiple barelled gun, with various degrees of effectiveness, check them on great ming military website

    • @SiriusAundB
      @SiriusAundB 6 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      Snocone333 No he probably doesn't mean each, because that wouldn't correspond with the loading time shown on screen, which shows to be 40-60 minutes long, so let's assume 60 seconds for each barrel, that'd result in 24 minutes loading time for the 24 barrel version. I'd put my money on the loading time of 40-60 seconds, because 40-60 minutes strikes me as too long, but you'd need to be a fairly speedy gunuser, because that'd mean that you'd have to load a barrel each 2,5 seconds, but it might be done with enough training.

      The Apache gun is designed to be a flashy display weapon. I mean its real was purpose was to frighten the parisian bourgeois into giving up their money and pocket watches without resisting. Interestingly, it caused the development of two upper class martial arts designed to counter concealed weapons:
      -The Savate kickboxing, with front kicks aimed at disarming and breaking the ribs of your opponent.
      - The Canne de Combat, a style of fencing adapted to canes and sword-canes. Here is a demonstration th-cam.com/video/eMdZjyU7i54/w-d-xo.html

    Jacob Shaw Revolver. What gets me about this design is it's honestly Brilliant. In a lot of the traits that Emilio Ghisoni would later incorperate into the Matebas. (And the Chiappa Rhino for a different company. Basically another Mateba) The bottom charge-hole firing position lowers the barrel axis for accuracy, just the opposite of the monstrosity before it, and therefore pushes the recoil straight back, instead of up. The center axis boresite is so innovative, they could have just started making target revolvers like that, any time, and it would be awesome, but then they put this on a stubby little chunk of rosewood for a grip. The Trigger guard is larger in area than the grip frame. So, any accuracy you would get from these inovations are totally lost, because you can't Hold the damned thing, without it slipping in your hand like a hard boiled egg.

    • @jasondoe2596
      @jasondoe2596 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Psiberzerker, agreed, it's genius! I was also reminded of the Matebas. It could have been amazing if it was properly sized and not a pocket design.

    • @Psiberzerker
      @Psiberzerker 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'd be happy if Emilio Ghisoni saw this, and decided to incorperate the cylinder axis site on his next design. Since it's safe to say by now that the man knows how to create a stunningly accurate and modern revolver. (Even if some of them are ugly.) I'm pretty sure that Shaw's patents have expired.

      @petric334 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some of these guns feature stacked, cartridge magazines and date from like 1865! They may be ugly, but there are several guns on this list that are way ahead of their time. Its fascinating how well understood the bore axis issue is on some of these designs, a long with capacity limits of a rotating cylinder.

  • @Paladin585

    Far as I understand, the pommel on old flintlock pistols was also intended to be used as a sort of club, which could explain the angle at least a bit. Arguably, this seems more designed for that purpose than the whole point of the thing, a firearm, but given load times, it was more likely to see longer periods of use as a club than a handgun.

    12:27 this is a list of ugly pistols. However, Palm Pistols get a little bit of a pass, (For me personally) not just because their form is dictated by their function (Basically fitting them all in the palm of your hand) but also, they're intended to be hidden, in the palm of your hand. So, aesthetic isn't as much of a factor, when you're not planning on brandishing it out in the open. Fantastic video. See for me I dont think that justifies ignoring the asthetics. The pistols were obviously made to be "pretty" and nice to look at. People obviously paid high price for the craftsmenship and intended on showing it to their group of friends.
      I mean if they could have been made to be purely functional like modern day concealed pistols. Thats just my two cents though. Your opinion is valid and makes sense, I just dont fully agree with it. ^~^

    hey skal since you had some "puffer" pistols and a handgonne in there, I thought you might be interested in how those names came to be. So from what I've heard the handgonne could also be called "meuchelpuffer" depending on dialect which roughly translates to "murdering poof maker" so the "puffer" cames from the german sound word "puff" (poof) and adding the "-er" makes it so it is an dedicated object to make poof. so essentially many pistols and rifles were just things that kill people and make poof, if you are just looking at the german language. Since the "puffer" pistol seems to invented much later it is to assume that "meuchelpuffer" was shortened to just "puffer".
    And today puffer is just additional time you plan into a project phase, just in case you might get the impression germans still call it like that ^^

    • @jamesjuld
      @jamesjuld 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well puffer nowadays is literally a buffer.
      But the old explanation is interesting.
      Handgonne I would have though from Kanone so in a dialect it could easily sound like ganone wich is pretty close to gonne. Especially since germans don't leave unused vocals anywhere. Don't know if that's true but that's what I would have though about the name history.

      starving troll During a robbery, the victims don't know, and hopefully won't find out what size bullets are fired. Maybe that's why. Or maybe it's just to make it easier for the police to decide if a gun needs to be confiscated or not.

    • @addonexus2656
      @addonexus2656 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The AR-15 and AK47 are no more dangerous than any other semi-auto gun on the market, and there are a plethora of guns made in their image that shoot entirely different calibers. It's not about how dangerous the gun is, victims definitely do not consider caliber size when being robbed (sadly a lot of people couldn't tell you the difference between a .22 and a 20 gauge), and its not about police confiscating a gun because police should not be in your home looking to confiscate any guns unless you're a felon, and in that case they take them all regardless.
      The only reason those guns have a bad global standing is because they associate them with the people who have taken up their use. The Mauser and Luger are widely adored despite being Nazi standard weapons, and owning a Mauser has little to do with your ethics and nothing to do with your affiliation to any party. Just because I own a colt revolver doesn't make me a cowboy, and just like having a flintlock pistol doesn't mean I'm a pirate. Many people associate with and experience a form of PTSD when they see the two styles of guns associated with modern terrorism. Avtomat Kalashnikova 1947 has been tainted as the Terrorist gun made by Slavic communists used by the Vietcong and Taliban (along with modern pirates and many other undesirables, because it was mass produced), and the ArmaLite Rifle model 15 has been demonized by the media because of its popularity among domestic United States terrorists, even though its original target audience was customization gun enthusiasts who like their fancy LED attachments and custom painted plastic parts.
      No gun should be banned. It does no good to ban a weapon, it only removes it from the hands of people who collect, sport, and home defense with decorative weapons that are no more dangerous than any other weapon on the market. Banning the weapon only affirms its association with the group, which then means all of the guns taken off of the open market dispense into the black market and are purchased by criminals who will continue to use the gun with even more pride than ever. It's just like the Thompson being banned because people were terrified of gangsters, who continued to use illegal Thompsons regardless, and even made it a personal mission to use them.
      We talk about banning certain guns because of the way they look, but we wont even consider banning sports cars for having shitty gas mileage that raises the gas prices, damages our roads, and eats our atmosphere, as well as encourages people to speed and causes more accidents (proven by insurance statistics).

    It's interesting to think that for almost 500 years, people have been asking "How do we make the gun BETTER?" The early guns were easy to improve, but even as late as the 1900's, when the "modern" gun (internal magazine, semi-automatic, all that jazz) became standard, people still asked that question and it's lead to some of the most hilarious and downright ridiculous firearms ever.

That weapons, with a bit of window dressing to cover up the frame, is the pretty close design referred to as a "Kalat PPG Pistol" and used by the Narn on the show Babylon 5, particularly well featured in the episode where G'Kar get's captured by Imperial Guard troops working for Emperor Cartagia, that episode originally broadcasted in 1996.

    The very acute angled pistols may have been produced specifically to be used by Cavalry from horseback. Some later revolvers also had oddly angled handles , deliberately made that way to facilitate the sometimes difficult job or firing down into close pressed assailants. Whatever the motive, they remain bloody ugly items.

    Often wondered about those hand mortars - what do you do if you get a misfire? Presumably the range was not huge, and therefore the flight time and so fuse length must be quite short. Not much time to tip the grenade out and pull out the fuse. Presumably, nobody wanted to stand too close to other people firing that weapon.... Would the short, thick barrel have still directed enough of the grenade explosion and fragments upwards and so protected the user and bystanders somewhat, or would the force of the grenade explosion just have blown it open?
