    Guy from Germany here. These things are still getting used and produced. They're expensive but not as rare as Americans might think. They don't get used for fireworks, propably for legal reasons. People use them just for the loud noise at ceremonial events, like ceremonial cannonfire.

      They were never used. They were never fired. The fact remains that they are not sealed at the base. While similar guns were used These are just for display. You fire them and smoke and hot gases would come out the base and you would be most distressed.

    We used to go on skiing vacation in Austria. The farmer, who owned the residence we stayed at, had one of these babies in his shed and each year he hand-loaded it for New Year's. The blast 'n bang was amazing :-D

    In some parts of Germany, these types of hand cannons are still used. They use them as way to ward away evil spirits at the start of the winter season. The custom dates back to the time these hand cannons were made.

      That weapon is not a blunderbuss. A blunderbuss is basically a short barreled shotgun with a slightly flared muzzle. And it was always loaded with lead shot, not 'nearly anything'. That's a myth.

      They were fired one-handed, because these were not developing a lot of pressure, so thus not a lot of recoil either.

      Pretty sure a lot of people seeing this wouldn't even know what it is.
      You would only have to conceal the stock and the trigger, the rest would look like a telescopic monocular, just make sure you wear something from that time.

    I have never seen old handheld mortars like that before. It is like the 17th century version of the M79 grenade launcher, or a blunderbuss on steroids.

    Keep in mind that this, loaded with a copper or steel ball, or a bag of shot pellets, is California legal, but a .223 with a removable magazine is not.

      I mean, the point is that a modern pistol with mags can be fired quickly and repeatedly and is concealable. This thing is tremendously unwieldy, unreliable, and takes forever to reload. Good luck committing a murder or multiple murders with this thing. The person would have to be blind to not see it coming.

      This gun loaded with a copper ball is less dangerous than a dude with an axe.
      Anyway, weapon legislation is all over the place everywhere. Weapons are simply hard to consistently legislate, because they come in literally all forms and purposes.

    I'm with you on the embellishments. I can admire the craftsmanship of very ornate pieces, but when it comes down to it, I prefer a more understated or finely detailed look.

    This with solid hollow point shot will suit your basic car and concealed carry protection needs out in Chicago between 8am and 6pm. If you're out later than that or for home defense such a light bullet won't do. I'd recommend stepping up to the twenty pounder with impact fuzed HE shells, it might scare away the smallest armed 14yo groups till the Army gets there.
