5:52 The Ottoman helmet you were looking was a Sipahi helmet and they were kind of heavy cavalry + horse archers and I think the hat like shape on top of it for blocking sun to improve their aim.
Makes a lot of sense. Interesting to see the differences between armors based on the regional differences of the weapons and tactics used. Calvary in western Europe doesn't seem to have as much of a history of a developed use of Horse archers on a large scale from what I've seen. While in the Middle east and Asia (especially the Mongols) were terribly effective. The Mongols would form a moving circle and anyone that charged into it would get pelted with arrows as the Mongols simply maneuvered the circle away. Not to mention becoming a nearly impossible target for opposing foot archers to hit them because of their movement. I had a really interesting book on the subject but it was burned in a fire :(
Tımarlı Sipahi ( Tımar is some sort of levy system that government gives people land to farm in exchange of manpower in wartime and sipahi means cavalry) is the basic soldier unit of Ottoman Army. They were heavy cavalry (heavy as in weight of horse, not in armor) and horse archers. There were also Akıncı, light elite horseman for recon, support, chasing enemy, sudden hit and run tactics, basic espionage and attacking enemy camp in the middle of battles, that is rarely used. There is Deli (literally means Mad), that is majority of Başıbozuk infantry that is used to flank enemies, attack in loose formation to tire enemies, and scare opposition. They wore weird, over the top "barbarian" clothing and other soldier with visible scars sent to this unit. Unlike Romans, Germanic Europians and Farsians tent to dehumanize their enemies by turning them into boogymen. And Ottoman Turks used this to weaponise it agains Europians. There is also janissaries, a similar sytem Romans used in Gaul and Spain to romanisize natives by turning them into legio. But Romans did not made Ariminus the most important figure in Imperial Praetorian bodyguard. Ottomans did. You can assume what happened next.
3:04 Says Aztec helmets offered decent protection.... Shows an aztec warrior wearing the pre-columbian version of Dark Helmet's helmet from Spaceballs.
That wasnt a helmet. If you look closely, you'll see it's actually attached to his back. That's an extreme example of one, but they served as war banners.
Ottoman helmet: the visor is actually very practical: it covers the eyesight from the sunshine, if its rain it don't let rain to fall in the face of the warrior, it also gives protection in combat against hits. BTW the nose-guard is moveable up and down by a wing-nut, so if its up the wearer don't have take off the helmet to drink or eat in the middle of the battle. 15th. and 17th. century Hungarian cavalry had used a similar helmet which had a neck guard at the back. it was cold crayfish tail because the plates had moved on each other like the shell of the crayfish.
Well... IMO polish hussar's helmet would be much better than armet. At least you can see anything and it protects well against sabre's cut. www.szrama.vipserv.org/mariusz-ozog/r007_1.jpg

The germanic helmet is just so iconic of a style. It's what you would imagine a basic and functional helm would be like. Lots of visibility and movement but good protection.
Hey Skall just a brief little armor info on the Japanese Helmets and why most of them are decorated so extravagantly. (I have done my research on both European and Asian Armors as I love them both) Basically as I understand it, when the Samurai started to become a higher class of warriors in the early eras of Japan they began decorating their helmets to show their clan, their personality, and to also be relatively intimidating. Not unlike Knights in Europe except clan is replaced by family crest of course. Then later on in the Edo period or the era of peace when there was relatively no fighting, samurai had nothing more to do besides act as guards to merchants, become clerks , and buy really expensive items such as the over-the-top armor sets you're referring to. I would say the Edo period was relatively the "15th century Europe" of Japan (although it was the 16th century) if you will. Most of the said armor sets were not worn into battle. The designs you showed in this video are superb combat versions from earlier centuries. Hope you enjoyed this little tid bit, keep up the good work Skall! Information sourced from: Clement,Jonathan. With the Ottoman helmet it's worth to notice the nasal guard. On the picture it's set in an open position. It can be removed and reattached in a closed position with the wide leaf-like piece pointing downward and protecting the face. You'll find the exact same feature in Polish Hussar helmets. So the brim also serves a secondary purpose as an implement of attaching and holding the nasal guard.
Don’t know if this counts as a helmet, but I really want to give a shout-out to those Roman Cavalry masks (especially the one from the Teutoburg forest). The mask in combination with the classic Roman helmet looks absolutley amazing to me. 10/10 wouldn’t want to face in battle.
Its quilted cotton armor, with decoration on top. It's essentially a gambeson they wore over a padded cotton vest and leggings. The colors were from bird feathers, which made it harder to grab hold of the warrior.
3:05 At this point about the Aztec helmets, my gf comments: "I like how they're wearing full outfits to match the helmets. Like... furries going into battle. 'Look at me, I'm a panther!' This is where furries come from. This is furry heritage."
G.G. Greathelms were basically universal during the time they were worn (12th-14th centuries) so their practicality is basically undeniable. I actually really like the ascetic of the more decorated and fanciful greathelms and sugarloaf helms.
ultraboy222 Greathelms remained in use as jousting helms long after their military application was superceded, much like the M-1911 it was a practical design that lasted quite a while. But you are right, better helmets evolved from their design, as is true in the case of all technology.

@@WillingSpade if you had a long beard you wouldn't need the chain mail. An epic beard is enough armor to protect your face and neck. Maybe even intimidate your enemies before the combat begins, and have them surrender.
Yeah the Pickelhaube is a really great helm, not only in looks but also in funktion. I have been wearing a Stahlhelm (same basic shape without the pickel) myself until three years ago (as a firefighter) and there is no comparision to the new modern helmets.
YEAAAS! Somehow I always get a hard on from vertical rather than horizontal plume on Corinthian helmet. It makes warrior look more brutal and fierce. No wonder why the Mohawk tribe used the similar hairstyle.
@Old Monty Because its connected. The horizontal version was made for commanders, in the greek century e.g. for polemarchs and as you said in the roman century for a centurion
That bejeweled Roman Helmet makes me think of the great crown of Gondor (in the Lord of the Rings books) . It is described as originally being a regular helmet, which had been modified and embellished over the centuries.
Many of these conical, "pointy" helmets made me think of Middle-earth cultures, as Tolkien had something of a love affair with pointy helmets. I used to think it sounded a bit silly, when reading the descriptions in the books, but in real life it does look pretty nice.
Helmets provide better protection against light weapons and arrows and swing with heavy weapons with limited power behind them. A direct hit with a mace, hammer or heavy sword can bend your metal and destroy the brain beneath it and their are some theoretical designs that i can think up on the spot that could increase the chances of surviving a direct blow on a helmet with force behind it but such a helmet would need another way to protect the head and the force pushing down upon it that could even include the shoulders and the head would still have to be able to turn and the helmet could well end up a decent size and i was not counting modern materials. A impenetrable helmet can still kill if it can be pushed against the head with enough force and could also snap your neck. connecting the helmet to some kind of armor should help with that but considering the metals a certain weight you might have trouble standing, Protections against dying from a bent helmet could become a bigger issue and would become a much bigger weight issue and alternate would to make the weapons slide or glance off the helm. Some kind of chamber system or double helmet maybe even some separations and supports or you could go with a very thick helm. What would i use to take the weight off the shoulders. a good portion of the armor would end up taking the blow.
Sarah Hess The iconic crusader great helms are quadruple layered. First there's padding(gambeson), then there's a steel skullcap, then there's a chainmail coif, and then finally is the big helm. ;)
Fuck’em. Galopping down a hill into tha back of a besieging force by surprise is nothing to be proud of. Fucked em up enough times in face to face battles.
13:55 Dude, agreed. I love the chainmail hanging down. Looks so cool, nearly completely covers your skin, except the eyes. Makes you look like a monster.
My personal favorite helmet is the Hounskull bascinet. The visor has well designed oculars, preventing stray blades from getting into them, and it also has an extended face, allowing arrows and lance strikes to not land as squarely directly on the face, and overall, looks very imposing
Pretty much all of the Winged Hussar Armor (Poland 16/17 century I believe) looks amazing and functional in my opinion. We had a helmet made by polishhussarsupply, Eric there did a fantastic job reproducing the historical accuracy of the armor.
In Portuguese we have the Elmo (Helm) and Capacete (helmet). But we use the first to describe anything from medieval age and the second one for any modern protective headgear.
Also in italian! Elmo (helm) for when the side of the head is also covered, elmetto (helmet) if it only covers up from your forehead, soldiers now use helmets. I think that even if it only has a nasal guard it's still a helm but nobody will tell you you're wrong if you use helmet.
I too like the Corinthian helms, especially those with the large comb running front to back. I am also a fan of the Roman Galea helm, again preferring the versions with the large plumed comb. Yet, my favorite helm is the Morion helm worn by the Spanish Conquistadors. The curve of the brim is actually quite practical. It keeps the rain and sun out of your face and the curve in back allows one to look up without one's helm falling off. Also, that same curve allows the sides to drop over the ear allowing for ear protection that does not hamper hearing. I would never trust the beaver style face shields like those on several of your examples. Nor would I trust those "nose guard" style helms. One good smack from a war hammer, mace or sword pommel and the metal you entrusted to protect your face is now part of your face. Call me crazy but I prefer parry and move with unhampered vision and audible capabilities to covering my face in potential shrapnel. The large solid metal comb that runs across the top serves to make the helm more rigid and resistant to blunt force and would also wreak havoc to the face of anyone within range of your head butt. IMHO, the Morion was the best helm design predating the modern Kevlar helmet. But, then I'm a fan of the "Viking" goggles helm as well. I just like the look and the mail is quite practical in a CQB setting to prevent cuts to the face and neck. Great stuff Skall! Thank you :) PS: From a purely aesthetic stand point, I like all your choices. I just have challenges with the practicality of some of the design features.
Was patiently waiting to see if my favorite, the spectacled helm, made the list and surprise! Turns out it's Skall's all time favorite too. Actually got to wear one at a Viking themed festival last year and it was amazing. The spider fit my head perfectly and the aventail actually made it feel better balanced than the more typical nasal helms of the reenactment group that was there. Before trying that I was convinced aventails were dumb and it would be better to wear a coif with the helm. But now I'm definitely sold on the aventail.
Considering the range of sallets, I can absolutely see the 'ok' attitude, some of them are utterly boring (obviously effective but boring as hell). Especially the ones without a faceguard, or the ones with a hard faceguard. But then there are the ones that are obviously the inspiration for some of Star Wars' helmets, and others with pronounced neckguards. They perform the same inhumanisation that the other favourites in the list do.
Sallets really vary for me, it depends on how they're shaped. Some Sallets are my favorite looks for helms, and some others are my least. I really like this one for example, though I don't believe it's actually based off of anything orig05.deviantart.net/a3b4/f/2010/100/9/2/sallet_armet_by_ugo_serrano.jpg
@Vienna Yes, you know it rigth, Sultan Suleiman used to wear a helmet like that if you search Suleiman Helmet this caplike helmets can be seen (he is the conqueror of egypt)
Another helmet that I think looks absolutely amazing is a renaissance italian burgonet made by Filippo Negroli. The visor has the appearance of a man's face with a lion's nose and a crown on top. It's intricately detailed including veins near the eyes. It's a true work of art.
Hell yeah. I remember watching the first Harry Potter movie as a kid and loving the giant knights from the chess game. Some had awesome helmets like this.
The jawline and the natural head shape make it look human and then the stripes and detailing give it an almost futuristic humanoid robot look. I love it!
I've always really liked the frogs mouth helmets. I know they're silly looking and not great on vision/breathing but there's something just kinda charming about them to me
@@brunoraoni I think they're concern is that the deflected bullet could hit someone completely innocent of the circumstances. Which sounds like a great case for a massive lawsuit.

The Gallic Roman helmet is the most beautiful Ancient Helmet. The helmet @ 8:41 has a very Sci-Fi look to it similar to those in games such as Destiny or Dead Space.
My favorite helmet/ head protection is a mail coif and a norman helmet, its so simple but it protects and it had lots of vision and just generally is really beautiful
Isn't the 'chainmail on the bottom' helmet really annoying to use when you have a beard? I can only imagine how often your beard would get pinched in between the chain circles.
Dominik Batók As long as you use a liner Ian LaSpina from Knyght Errant said that it doesn't chafe much. But I do imagine that it makes breathing a bit harder.
You said you like that dome shape. Why not mention the bascinet? I get the pig face version may put people off but if you like domes, it fits quite well.
The corinthian (with crest!) and that viking helmet with the eye guard are some of my favorites too. From what you did not mention here, I also like the Gothic sallet style helmets, and the medieval great helm which is very iconic for knights when they still wore chainmail. I always preferred the chainmail with colorful surcoat look over plate armor in aesthetics at least.
As soon as I saw this video I skipped to wherever I could find you opinion on the spectacle helmets... They're easily my favourite and they're beautiful!
Helmets with beard armor, every Dwarf would be proud. "Upon his beard you shall recognize the real Dawi" or something like that XD Do you play Warhammer, Skall?
The last one is very similar to the Persian cataphract helmet and later adopted by Byzantines. There's a rock relief showing a cataphract rider wearing this helmet, it's called "Taq e Bostan"
Hussar helmets are probably my favorite overall both aesthetically and functionally. Don't think it's quite phallic enough for Skal's taste with the way he was drooling over those Corinthians... haha

🛡[T]⚔️[T]🛡
That bejeweled Roman Helmet makes me think of the great crown of Gondor (in the Lord of the Rings books) . It is described as originally being a regular helmet, which had been modified and embellished over the centuries.
Many of these conical, "pointy" helmets made me think of Middle-earth cultures, as Tolkien had something of a love affair with pointy helmets. I used to think it sounded a bit silly, when reading the descriptions in the books, but in real life it does look pretty nice.
I've been marathoning Skallas videos and I cannot express how much I like his analyses.
Objective, to the point.
Brilliant, love it.
GOOGLE SAYS IT TAKES 12 MINUTES TO GET HERE, YOU GOT HERE IN 15 MINUTES.
WHO IS SHE!?!?
My favourite is easily the Armet and Close helmets. The design if the most badass imoo.
Kapuchu yeah they can also be made pretty beautiful
Sarah Hess The iconic crusader great helms are quadruple layered. First there's padding(gambeson), then there's a steel skullcap, then there's a chainmail coif, and then finally is the big helm. ;)
Kapuchu same
Yeah armets are pretty cool.i like greathelms too!
I would actually like to see how you take apart the ugliest and best looking armors in reality AND too in gaming if you want.
Pifilix XIV That's gonna be interesting!
I'd like to hear his thoughts of the armour and weapons in any of the Darksouls games
yeah and or in some random jrpg
If skall does a fantasy'game armour video I'd love his take on the elder scrolls' various incarnations of daedric, orcish, dwemer, etc.

German gothic is always great.
Meh... depending on one's taste.
Surprise surprise, the Sallet was of (Northen) italian origins.
I prefer the Italian stuff myself, but that might be because of my heritage.
marcianito 100% real ayy Italian and German armor craftsmanship where the most pristine and developed so really they’re equivalent except in style

after ugliest and best looking helmets next is the most practical helmets?
so condoms?
Idk, the Gondor Helmet design is practical and good looking, even without Mithiril.
All of these helmets were used in battle so like, already practical?
i mean, not all the helmets protect the same against a hit, so all can be practical bur some are better than others protecting you
Most average looking helmets
*ALL HELMETS ARE USELESS WHEN PITTED AGAINST A PUMMEL THROW*
Are you referring to the pommel of mass DESTRUCTION?!
nimmivids It's a reference to the End Him Rightly vid. Unscrewing the pommel and throwing it at him.
nimmivids I never even noticed the spelling. Woops.
What if it's a helmet forged from only pommels, and have multiple pommels attached?
13:55 Dude, agreed. I love the chainmail hanging down. Looks so cool, nearly completely covers your skin, except the eyes. Makes you look like a monster.
My personal favorite helmet is the Hounskull bascinet.
The visor has well designed oculars, preventing stray blades from getting into them, and it also has an extended face, allowing arrows and lance strikes to not land as squarely directly on the face, and overall, looks very imposing
Pretty much all of the Winged Hussar Armor (Poland 16/17 century I believe) looks amazing and functional in my opinion. We had a helmet made by polishhussarsupply, Eric there did a fantastic job reproducing the historical accuracy of the armor.
whats the history on the helmet @8:41? thats the nicest knights helmet ive ever seen.
Eric Bourne it looks sick
I personally prefer the one at 8:10, but that one is pretty good damn cool
A little late but it is was made in France in 1875 in the style used around the 1500's. here's link- www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/732192
@@shaggydestroyerofworlds2208 thanks friend
In french we have haume (helm) and casque (helmet) the first one is used for the great helms only.
Oui, mais ça s'écrit "Heaume".
Le Brusk helm can also be used geographically in cultures such as helm of a ship or tower and in lord of the Rings helms deep
Elijah Jenkins I believe Helm's Deep is named after Helm Hammerhand
In Portuguese we have the Elmo (Helm) and Capacete (helmet). But we use the first to describe anything from medieval age and the second one for any modern protective headgear.
Also in italian! Elmo (helm) for when the side of the head is also covered, elmetto (helmet) if it only covers up from your forehead, soldiers now use helmets. I think that even if it only has a nasal guard it's still a helm but nobody will tell you you're wrong if you use helmet.
The thumbnail looks like a black gondor helmet
Thank you :)
PS: From a purely aesthetic stand point, I like all your choices.
Id love a six hour vid about helmets
It's literally astonishing how many helmets has been found in italy
No sallet?
Outrage :O
Sallets paired with a folding down bevoir look great
Sallets are okay, just not that high on my list.
Yep, an ornate sallet with a bevor and/or gorget is my favorite type of helmet. Looks like a star wars imperial gun crew doesn't hurt either.
Funfact, the aztec helmets were made out of wood and leather.

Well, Ottomans usually be/stay on Anatolia but have it your way. At least we can say the cap has been useful on their conquers on africa :)

Another helmet that I think looks absolutely amazing is a renaissance italian burgonet made by Filippo Negroli. The visor has the appearance of a man's face with a lion's nose and a crown on top. It's intricately detailed including veins near the eyes. It's a true work of art.
There was a master at work
Holy shit the helmet at 8:41 looks amazing
Hell yeah. I remember watching the first Harry Potter movie as a kid and loving the giant knights from the chess game. Some had awesome helmets like this.
The jawline and the natural head shape make it look human and then the stripes and detailing give it an almost futuristic humanoid robot look. I love it!
that's a lot of phallic-like helmets.
hi freud
Croz Raven I thought I was the only one.
its like it was done on purpose...
Croz Raven the opening in the Chaldean helmets looked like meatballs and sausage on every one
The bronze colored Corinthian helmet is one. The "blows" really "glans" off.
I've always really liked the frogs mouth helmets. I know they're silly looking and not great on vision/breathing but there's something just kinda charming about them to me
If you talk about the effectiveness of helmets, Canada might ban helmets for fear they'll deflect police bullets
But why would they ban something that could reduce police brutality? hmn
@@brunoraoni I think they're concern is that the deflected bullet could hit someone completely innocent of the circumstances. Which sounds like a great case for a massive lawsuit.
Snail Man just shoot in the eye...shoot in the damn eye thats the weakness for all helmets and if the eye is fully covered ... well you dont have to worry about it then cause he WONT SEE

The helmet @ 8:41 has a very Sci-Fi look to it similar to those in games such as Destiny or Dead Space.
I was getting worried you wouldn't mention the Viking spectacle guard, what a beautiful helmet.
Aztec helmets look like ancient furries.

Isn't the 'chainmail on the bottom' helmet really annoying to use when you have a beard? I can only imagine how often your beard would get pinched in between the chain circles.
Dominik Batók Perhaps add a woollen cloth behind the mail.
Dominik Batók its not too bad actually, especially if you oil your chain and your beard (both highly advisable).
Dominik Batók As long as you use a liner Ian LaSpina from Knyght Errant said that it doesn't chafe much. But I do imagine that it makes breathing a bit harder.
why not have a hole in the cloth were your mouth is?
Dominik Batók Or use a more comfortable fabric? Or you could just oil the chain so it slips rather than grips.

Every Skallagrim video I watch I can't focus on the rest of the video because I cant stop looking at his beard. It is glorious!
You have just as bad of taste as skillgrim
The Sutton hoo helmet definitely interesting!
