Wow Gary, there is so much to think about here. I have photos everywhere-pictures in the finder, the photos app on my Mac and several external hard drives. What a mess! Thanks for all your hard work for us unorganized folks…😅
Thank you, Gary, very helpful; I didn't know there were so many options. To be honest, I think it could be a bit more intuitive to look at pictures on MacOS. For example, it is not at all obvious that you have to select multiple pictures in preview to be able to switch between them (at least it's not obvious to someone more familiar with Microsoft Windows). As a hobby photographer, I enjoy just looking at a folder of pictures, fullscreen, without any distracting controls, and with an auto-advance feature with a timer. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be that easy. Adobe Lightroom has it, but it's not very well implemented. In Microsoft Windows, the situation is better but not perfect. I was so frustrated by the image viewers in MacOS and Windows that I ended up writing my own code for a slide show.

But I have a request. Sometimes I want to preview the music I downloaded. But I don’t want them to open in Quick Time. I just want a quick preview just like we quick view photos. Is that possible?
Do you mean audio files? You can use Quick Look or the Finder preview sidebar to preview those just like you can with images. You get an icon with playback controls.

how do you change the image preview size with quick look when you press the space bar, the preview image is always way to big take the entire screen almost
Thanks for the tips. Very helpful. I've moved to Mac from Windows. When viewing say, 2,000 photos from a shoot Finder's various views can be slow and tedius, especially if I'm culling images. Using the Windows software I'd tap the next image/file button, usuallly the right arrow key, if I don't like the image then i press the Delete button. Finder doesn't allow me to do that. I have to right click the image and click on the filename and click on "move to bin". This is a real pain in the butt when in this case, I have thousands of images that I have to cull.
There has to be an easier way to do this, surely? A good application is Irfanview for Windows but it's not available on the Mac.
Any suggestions as to what would make a BETTER file management app than Finder?

You can certainly use the keyboard to delete files. It is Command+Delete instead of just Delete.

I use quick look often when I need to reference a file on my desktop. most of the time it opens as it should but other times, after pressing the space bar the file immediately retreats back to itself without opening. i'm assuming it's because I left the image open and went on to something else? but is there a quick way to fix this without having to open the file in preview?
Not sure why that would happen. Does it always happen with the exact same files and 100% of the time with those files?
@@macmost no, it does not discriminate😄 I use quick view frequently and it happens pretty often with any type of file.
@@socksistavideo7399 But can you find a pattern? Like it always happens with file A, but never file B. Or occasionally happens with certain types of files (PNG) and never with others (JPG). Etc. Try to think like a detective and investigate.
Hello Gary, do you know if there is a way to quickly preview audio waveforms? other than the quicktime trick (pressing command T and navigating)
Depends on what you mean by "quickly." You can open them up in GarageBand, in Audacity, or some other app.
@@macmost Yeah, thats not that quick, even in the fastest mac, it stills takes time, wheareas preview is just spacebar. I wish preview would should waveform for audio files. If you know any other way please let me know! thank you!

amazing tutorials man. I've been sorting and culling my photos for years. I have lots of duplicates from imports. I've now found that the same image file name.jpg and .JPG are the same file (just thumbnail etc). Oops I've been deleting them, thinking they are are duplicates :-( I also found that finder can't find images in photos with filenames and .jpg . AND most of my photos are NOT referenced, so I can no longer find location of images in photos. Not sure if it's me, or Big Sur 11.7 Grrr. Any advice? Cheers

@@gleembru You don't. You use Photos to find the photos in the Photos app.
Nice options with sits and jumps, but I'm still in shock there is no dedicated app for pic/video gallery, such a common task for every owner. Microsoft had it for years and dedicated tools like FastStone (enter to switch between gallery and full-screen, one-touch sort, one touch tag, loseless rotates, etc)
Something like that is not from Microsoft. It is a third-party app. There are third-party apps for Mac too. Not sure what comes closest to what you need, but search the App Store and maybe you'll find something.

Not sure what you mean. Like quickly switch back and forth between them? You can do that in Quick Look or almost any of these techniques.
Hi, I did use the space bar a lot. And there came a big window with my pic likes yours in the video. But now there is only coming a smal pic, that i almost cannot see. Is there a reason for that, and can i change that back?
Depends on what you are viewing. If the window is small, you can drag the sides to enlarge it. If it is not looking right, try a restart.
I could've sworn that, around 10+ years ago, we were able to preview the contents of a Zip file without the use of a third-party app, coding or some other workaround. I remember selecting a Zip file, pressing the space bar, and seeing all the files inside. But that stopped a few years later, so today, you just see an enlarged Zip icon. Maybe it was my imagination, but I think I could do that years ago.
Another problem I've encountered with Quicklook over the years is when I try to preview a selection of multiple Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign files in the index view, it normally works fine, but all of a sudden, the images would start converting to just the Adobe icons. The images still preview fine if I view one file at a time. But if I try to preview multiple Adobe files, I just get an index view of icons. It doesn't happen with non-Adobe files. Normally all the Adobe files preview fine, but sometimes, they only show up as icons and it's unpredictable. I though it might be an issue with RAM and processing power, but I could never figure out what makes the files preview as icons.
Sounds like maybe you had an old Quick Look extension that did this.
Great list of options. For those familiar with Windows, I love your tip to select multiple images and then hit space bar. You can maximize the image on the screen and then use the left and right arrow keys to scroll through the images, just like you can when you double click an image in Windows Explorer. It's a little different but similar enough. Thanks!

How do i get my mac to keep the original photo date when i import images? all images dates are updated to date imported.

Importing how, exactly? From your iPhone to the Photos app via cable? Via iCloud Photos? As a file using Image Capture or some other method?
I find Gallery to be quite a disappointment. Cover Flow was much better with having the option for a 3 finger swipe on the track pad to view through images at varying speeds.
What software do you mainly use for video edit?
I use ScreenFlow to make the MacMost tutorials. macmost.com/what-i-use But for regular video editing I use Final Cut Pro sometimes and iMovie other times.
@@macmost Not to be judgy, but why not professionals like Pr, resolve, Or Final Cut?, your videos are always about detailed features and finding out the nity-grity of everything.
@@sagunmdr ScreenFlow is specifically made to do screen recording and camera recording at the same time and edit the result. I can even record multiple screens, camera, mic, iPhone or iPad all together at once, and then edit with pointer effects, keyboard indicators and more. It is the right tool for the job.

I recently switched from Windows to Mac, and one thing I miss is being able to Zoom in and out quickly when viewing photos in windows default image/photo viewer AND be able to delete, while being able to review the photos in a sequence. So far, I have not figured out a way to Zoom in/out in Quick Preview or preview mode in Mac. Is there a way? Many thanks in advance!
Two fingers pinching in and out works in both Quick Look and in the Finder preview area.
@@macmostThank you! I just did and it worked! However, that requires me to use the touch pad on the laptop. Currently, I have the laptop screen closed, and it is connected to dual displays and a keyboard and mouse (keyboard and mouse are not Apple products). Is there a way to do this Zoom in/out thing on the keyboard or via mouse?
@@tonydee9835 Command and + or - can be used. But doesn't your mouse have some way to scroll/zoom? It should, unless it is very basic.
Hello, I'm new to the Mac universe. I bought my first macbook and I'm having problems with the photos app.
I imported my photo library into Photos (210gb) to save it on my local disk.
After the import finished, I activated ICloud Photos and now my photo library has 377gb on the local disk.
Why is this happening? Is he duplicating the photos?
You'd have to have someone take a firsthand look to figure out what is going on. Perhaps you had photos previously in iCloud Photos as well? Perhaps you already had those some photos in iCloud Photos (maybe from your iPhone) and then you also imported them into Photos on your Mac, and then you turned things on and merged the two? Hard for me to say.

How can you select then delete multiple RAW files without also deleting jpg files which show up as pairs?
Not sure what you mean. If you have two files, a RAW and a JPEG, and you delete just the RAW file, the other file wouldn't be deleted.
@@macmost say I have 4000 raw files imported with jps (Sony shoots both at same time ). On import to Photos they both show up. To access raw file to edit, there’s a use raw as original. I can delete it but it kills the jpg too. If I search Raw files it will show them all but a mass cull deletes the jps imported with them. As they are inside photo library it seems a bad move to delve in there? Really appreciate the grey matter 😎😎😎
@@zenoguru Hmmm. I've never run into that feature. Are you sure it has both in Photos? The documentation seems to suggest you just have the RAW. But are you saying you see two copies of the photo in your Library after importing? So every photo is there twice?
I suppose you could just select only the jpeg versions, export those to a folder in the Finder, then delete the photos, then re-import those jpegs. I can't experiment since I don't have any of these paired photos to test.
Great video but I'm still struggling. I'm a new Mac user so most of this is like learning a new language. I mainly shoot motorsports. On any given race day I'll shoot in the neighborhood of 1,500-2,000 pics. I need to be able to flip through the photos, delete the bad ones and and set aside some highlights for social media. I just need to be able to go through pics one by one before uploading to my storefront.
Do that in the Photos app, not as files. That's what the Photos app is for.
@@macmost But then I have to import the images to my computer first?? I can not scroll through my photos in full screen while they are still on my SD card. How can you not see the problem? I have been using both Mac and Windows for 10 years and every time I am dealing with photos I have to use my PC because of this. It is so stupid and unintuitive that I can not wrap my head around it
@@mathiaseriksson4464 If you want to look at them directly on the SD card, you can do so in the Finder using one of the techniques I show in this video. Just use your SD card like a regular external drive. Alternatively, you can use the Image Capture app to do it. You can also do it in the Import section of the Photos app., reviewing the photos there and only importing the ones you want. But it sounds like you don't want to use the Photos app here. So just use the Finder.
Is there a way to delete photos I don't want as I'm scrolling through them? I'm trying to easily clean up my photos.
Scrolling through in the Finder? You can drag them to the trash or use Command+Delete with them selected.
@@macmost I'm looking for a way to do it like I can on a Windows PC. Where I have a large view of the photo, and can delete a photo as I'm looking through them in a large view. The Windows PC photos app has the ability to edit, crop, adjust, etc. AND the trashcan icon to easily delete as I'm scrolling through the photos. I've searched and searched to try and find a way to do this on a MAC laptop but am striking out.
@@KimWindfeather So you are comparing the Windows Photos app to the Mac Finder. If you want a "Photos app" then use the Mac Photos app. You can do all that in the Mac Photos app.
@@macmost I can't seem to access my OneDrive from that app, though. Sorry, I'm new to MAC and trying to convert over from Windows. It's been challenging. That's why I like your videos. 🙂
@@KimWindfeather You don't access OneDrive at all. You store your photos IN the Photos Library IN the Photos app.
Why are image starting from the last one when you are step 5 ? I would expect the list to start from the first image.
Then just select the opposite way. Click the bottom one in the list, then Shift+click the top one. Try it and see.

There are 7 methods here. Just pick one that works for you.
Mine shows the “Lr” as a preview. Some load and some don’t. I’ve tried everything and it still doesn’t load. I’m can’t find a video to help
"Lr?" As in LightRoom? Did you export an image from LightRoom? Maybe the app didn't provide a preview when you did the export. It would be up to the app to do that if it is some sort of custom file format.
@@macmost yea as in Lightroom. The weird part is that I didn’t export anything. I plug my sd card into Mac, go into finder and make sure icon preview is on. Some images load and some don’t. And if they do load they take a really long time. I’m good on storage and have a 2021 MacBook. I take 4k videos and I don’t have a problem previewing those icons. It’s mainly the raw photos.
@@Leekyleo So your Camera is the app that is producing these. Sounds like it's version of RAW format (there are many) either doesn't include a preview or does it in a format not supported on a Mac. It shows Lr because at some point when you installed or used Lightroom you set that app to be the default app to handle those files.

I don’t understand why Apple removed the ability to preview EPS files in the Finder. For graphic designers, EPS files are still widely used and will probably never go away. Why remove the ability to be able to do something when it was already built into the Finder? I had to spend about an hour finding a solution in Adobe’s user forum that involves modifying the quick look generator file for Adobe Illustrator and trying to get that to work.
I read some speculation that it was for security. Basically, there were some security issues with EPS code and showing them so easily in Quick Look and the Finder was a security hole.
Quick look doesn't work for me. It opens to a small preview, inside a large window with some data. No matter the size of the window, the photo stays relatively small
That was a bug in an older version of macOS. Are you up-to-date?
I wish Apple would just add arrow buttons on the finder viewer when I click a picture and enlarge it. Then I can sit on my couch and use my mouse to click through pictures when I have it on full screen without having to use my keyboard. . Highlighting a bunch of picture with the mouse before opening it to get the arrow button is an extra step that should be unnecessary. It would not take much for apple just to add the arrow buttons on top. Windows definitely beats apple out on this one.
Also I have external drives that I do not want to add to the photos app. Apple should make finder viewer more simple and picture friendly.
But it dosen't work in full screen, we can't change the images by arrow keys
Which method? Because some of these definitely work very well in Full Screen mode.
@@macmost if I press space key the image will open and I can change it to see next image by pressing arrow keys but once I make it to full screen I can’t change it to next image. Please explain this
@@ganeshsoni900 Right. Once you go into that mode then the Finder window loses focus. So maybe just enlarge the window, not use Full Screen. Or, use one of the many other methods I show in this tutorial.
You didn't show how to view photos on the map.
I dont know why they have to make this difficult,
I maximise finder window, just window get bigger, file arrangment dont change, they look just same,
I open for preview, and use arrow key to go to next for previous, but it only previews till end of that row, for next item, you need to press 6 times left arrow, then down key
I sure there will be fixes for this, but i am at the stage where i want things to just work, i am not a teenager who used to get excited while digging things around,
Try using List View instead of Icon View. You may like it better.
Can someone please explain why the f%ck Mac has a "clean-up" option? It should default to clean-up when you enlarge the icon grid view just like windows explorer. Absolutely insidious. I hate this Mac.
The option you want is there. It is "Sort By." So if you choose Sort By name, then it will keep it sorted by name and then adjust as you change the window size.
None of these ways make it easier than even a slow Windows machine to view images so if you're stuck using Mac OS rubbish, this might help. I'm curious why Mac OS was deliberately designed to slow down production with all the cumbersome file navigation, and the microscopic image preview. It's straight out of Atari-era file systems. Windows is obviously far superior (but not much better) than Mac, but Mac just has to be 'different'...and they are different alright.
The photos app is a nightmare. It isn't easier to organise at all. And it locks you into a limited ecosystem you have no control over.
Not sure what you mean. You have tons of options for organizing in Photos: time, a full list, your own albums, smart albums, keyword tags, people. What method do you want that is missing? With albums or keywords you can do almost anything you want.
As for locking you into a limited ecosystem, how so? You can export as much as you like, and even store your photos as files externally if you want. What feature is missing for you here?
@@macmost All options lock me in further. When I leave them as files and use a manager that honours that I am free to convert to WEBP JPEG XL or ANYTHING I like. I can move folders around without worrying about a corrupt database or an update that locks me out of my own photos (has happened before). I can manage a MASSIVE collection with partial backups and many more features that totally disappear when I lock myself into a proprietary format that you are paid to promote.
WHO THE HELL WANTS TO DO ALL THIS !!! Why can't they keep it simple.....
Each of these is pretty simple. If you'd rather have 1 way instead of 7 choices, then pick one and forget the other 6.
