    I was a Grunge teenager in the 90’s (in the uk) I got bullied at school because of how I dressed. Then the high street shops started stocking Grunge inspired clothes and all the girls who bullied me were now wearing Grunge. So many music movements end up being popular high street fashion. I still predominantly have a grudge style now in my 40’s

      Sad for you.Britpop is the mainstream culture in uk in 90s,I guess Grunge style is not popular in uk,the fact proves that I was wrong.

      Im sorry you got bullied! That fuckin sucks people really can me assholes its like theyre scared of being different or of people that are? Its so weird, im in 🇸🇪 high school and it’s exhausting! And everything feels fake all people talk about are whats on their phone?! And i want to do things for real!? Talk about real things. But i cant even say anything i have a screen time of 5h a day? Haha sorry i think you get my point this sucks.
      Im so jealous that you got to grow up when bands like Nirvana and sound garden, or even when people would just go to concerts or like by cds! Music isnt even that big of a deal to anyone anymore because its so accessible ( witch is good sometimes) im just gonna start a band and play live on like bars and stuff!
      Hahah sorry I don’t know why this became a vent post or why im even writing this to random folks and the internet… why not tho?!! I hope you’re doing well and that you dont falla asleep while reading this gahaha

    I really appreciate the acknowledgment of how characaturized certain elements of alternative styles have become (ex. Wednesday Addams dresses, leather jackets becoming mainstream, EXPENSIVE boots/platforms, etc.). I think that alternative styles becoming more mainstream is kinda frustrating but NOT completely problematic UNLESS the subversiveness and roots in poverty are ignored.

    I got really involved in this one, taking notes and thinking of analogs in art and intellectual history and I thought I had what Grunge was nailed but near the end I wasn't sure. This was a hard subject for me, anti-fashion fashion, a dialectic.We all know what the Grunge "look" is, we know it when we see it. Punk: get the hell out of here with Punk. Punk isn't even on the same end of the spectrum as Grunge. For the same reason I didn't take to the Pale Grunge and Fairy Grunge. How dare they appropriate the name! Those are CLEARLY intentional fashion. I don't know what I would have thought of Pale and Fairy if it didn't misappropriate Grunge. Now, you could argue that after Nirvana realized that not making a statement was becoming a statement that they should have changed. But then that would be intentional, the opposite of Grunge. So, all of these dialectics: grunge=scum becomes chic; ripped jeans cuz I'm poor man, to deliberately ripped jeans. I'm sorry, that's pathetic. You cleared this confusion up for me when you said near the end that Grunge was all about "authenticity." That reconciled all of the contradictions to my satisfaction. Can you tell I liked this vlog? :) I really, REALLY did.

    I’m not sure if that’s entirely what androgynous means? For when you said androgynous looks consist of men wearing dressing and women wearing baggier men’s clothing. To be androgynous in fashion is to not present in a particularly feminine or masculine way :) but I totally get what you’re trying to say, and I love that grunge has that aspect too!!! Love ur videos so so much as well as the effort and research that goes into them

      i think often grunge fashion doesn’t present itself feminine or masculine and can be androgynous for those who want to present that way! clothing in grunge isn’t masc is femme which is what’s awesome about it(: thanks so much for the comment!

    Elder millenial here lol.
    Back in the day me and my friends used to joke it was a cross between hippie and punk lol.
    That might sound weird to folks nowadays, but there is a shared look and influence from both.
    Dressing like this wasn't just freeing to us a baby dŷkes (thank you for bringing this up), it also is a "look" unbound by a specific scene. Me and my friends listened to metal and goth music too and all kinds of music tbh.
    And that's kinda the thing about "grunge" as a look: it's aesthetically WHATEVER.

    • @KaiDecadence
      @KaiDecadence 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Since no one answered, I will. To be a part of any music-based scene/subculture, you have to listen to the music in order to truly be a part of it. If you don't enjoy Grunge music then it wouldn't be accurate to call yourself "grunge" or a "grunge fan" since you don't like the music that defines the subculture. That said, if you like certain aspects of what the musicians wore, it's fine to take inspiration from it.
      But anyway, you don't have to be grunge to take inspiration from said scene while having the decency to not mislabel your interest.

    Those “grunge” fashion examples look to me more like goth or punk? I guess grunge is a spin off of punk but like Kurt Cobain for example didn’t really dress “grunge” ? Was he like an outlier? Because most of his fashion seems to me very much a mix of him being insecure with himself and also a bit of laziness. And ironically his fashion was like an expression of himself. Didn’t feel like he tried to go for any particular style even though he’s always the poster child for grunge. The other ppl I see being referred to as “grunge” style look more goth/alternative. And it seems more deliberate not effortlessly just their style. So I guess the whole “grunge” scenes philosophy went out the windows the moment it became popular because now it’s just like any other clothing style and “cliquey” group mentality that grunge was supposed to be against. Once things become popular they are no longer authentic
