Yes exactly! That's what happened in the 90's. For example, Kurt Cobain was just a young musician from a small working class blue collar logging town outside of Seattle, Washington. He didn't come from money. He didn't have the money to shop at the fancy department stores. He shopped at thrift stores to buy affordable clothes. But once the Seattle Grunge scene was at its height and the so called fashion of that scene hit the mainstream; retailers wanted to get their hands on the new trend at the time. They wanted to make money on upper middle class/rich kids and their parents who shopped only at the malls and the big retail stores.

I went to concerts like Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam or Stone Temple Pilots and most of the audience wore simple bands' tour shirts or other plain clothing. There are no grunge aesthetic in grunge (or alt rock) music. Chances are you'll probably find girls who dress like these "grunge aesthetic" outfits at some edm or kpop concerts.
Wenxing Wang that’s so fucking true. My mom went on a Nirvana concert in 1992 and they all had like normal clothes but the girls mostly had red lipstick, because it were a trend
Wenxing Wang I’ve also been to alice in chains and other grunge bands and you are right that most people just wear a band shirt. I personally do dress like this and listen to grunge and find it kind of stupid how you judge people wearing this style without even seeing them at an edm or kpop concert; you obviously don’t go there. It’s true that some people with this style wear shirts without knowing the bands and that’s annoying but you have a way bigger chance that they do. Besides that, if people like to dress this way and listen to kpop that should be fine.
i mean kinda true, but looking at, say early 2000s rock and some of the rock bands still around now you see a lot of young people dressing like this. i hate it when they wear merch for the aesthetic and not because they actually enjoy the music.
@@mayag4708 I agree that it's annoying when you think someone enjoys the same music and then they end up not even knowing the band. On the other hand if they feel happy wearing band shirts because of the aesthetic, who am I to ruin it for them. I don't have to agree with everyones choices.
I was a preteeen/teenager during the mid-1990s at the time when 90's Grunge was at its hight. There is hardcore grunge which is what you are discussing in this video. These were people who were hardcore into the Seattle Grunge scene. Since Grunge was the popular style at the time in the 90s, there was a lot of kids/teens like me that weren't into the Grunge scene but still wanted to look cool at school. So for us kids that weren't into that scene there was what I call softcore Grunge. Softcore Grunge takes the elements of the Grunge look such as layering but without the black outfits and chains. Softcore Grunge includes t-shirts, ribbed turtlenecks, striped short or long sleeved shirts, oversized jeans with holes in them, denim overalls and of course button down flannel shirts. Also softcore grunge includes babydoll dresses, long dresses that button all the way down in the front, and Sunflower print dresses.
From someone who lived through the 80's and 90's: Great outfits! 4 and 5 are super! Love how the punky 80's and the grungy 90's meet in your looks! I don't know if it's pure 'grunge' but it's a lovely, aesthetic interpretation. I highly recommend for you to start thrifting. There are amazing authentic band T's and other wearables pieces to be discovered at thrift markets or stores, that look vintage and give an outfit that grungy edge. Fast fashion like found in Hot Topic is a good first step for closet staples, but the fast fashion industry also pollutes the planet terribly. So hopefully l can encourage you to watch a documentary like " True Cost" on the damages of the fast fashion industry, and check out some thrifting vloggers on TH-cam and urge you to edge up your lovely grunge style by thrifting 😘 🤗😍
how do you style a really bright colored shirt 😭😭 I'm apart of a club mainly for welcoming freshman and we have to wear neon green, yellow, pink or blue shirts basically the first week. (I have the greena and blue ones cause they're the darkest but still.. neon. yay.)
legit everyone in the comments is like "NOT GrunGE!!!111 Back in mY Day, when our Lord ad Savior Kurt Cobain was still with us it was all about being a poor anti-consumerist shithead who only owned two shirts" the newer grunge movement is not the same as the original how is that so hard to understand. Grunge today is about taking elements from the original movement like flannels, distressed clothing, layering, certain types of shoes, a more muted color pallet, etc. and doing something new and different with it for streetwear purposes. There's still a big emphasis on thrifting and wearing individual pieces that are really cheap on their own. You guys act like just because she tucks in her shirt or puts a skirt on that she doesn't understand what grunge is. Does it have things in common with other modern alt fashion like the goth and punk scenes? Or the new e-girl wave? Sure. But all movements that are based on a kind of self expression are going to be influenced by others.
Faith Hess if it's only got a couple components from grunge it shouldn't be called grunge. If it's a modern interpretation call it that. Just gets annoying when you can't find anything that's genuine because people call any style with ripped jeans and flannels grunge. i literally have like a 15-20 year old belt that looks like yours(the double hole type one) but when I got it from my sisters old closet it had glitter on it, so i spent 40-50 minutes taking the glitter off
Tip: Bleach the bottom half of your flannels and they'll look 10 times grungier. Also your Queen top and earrings are dreamy. I also have a Queen shirt but it's the one with their bright orange logo so I don't wear it often cause I like wearing colder colors like blue, green and purple.
Hey! I liked this because I went there looking for inspiration and some advice to dress this way, although this looks more like modern emo style for me lol in the same way I respect any taste and I appreciate the work you did with this video kudos for u
just keep in mind that this isnt grunge, it is e-girl/boy, and that grunge is an alternative subculture built off of poverty in the 90’s. and in order to “be grunge” you have to listen to the music, and respect the morals and political opinions that they had in the early 90’s, abd then only then is it the stye
agreed, not to mention that the subculture was built off of poverty which was why a lot of the time grungey clothing was and is from charity shops and thrift stores as well as hand-me-downs.
There is a difference between style and life style. Don't come here telling people to convert their mindsets to something they don't support just because they where a certain style. We're still gonna wear it whether or not
@@monillabean3470 I don't think you read the entire comment. This person also is talking about how the style isn't accurate to grunge as well as the grunge subculture in general. Also, to truly be grunge you do have to listen to the music and respect the morals as is with many other subcultures in the alternative genre. You can dress grunge but just because you dress grunge doesn't mean you truly are grunge.

Thank you!! I appreciate it :))
i love the joseph and the technicolored dream coat poster
back in my day, grunge was, a nirvana shirt and a faded flannel 😳
Ok boomer
I LOOOOVE number 4 it looks SOOO good
i literally have like a 15-20 year old belt that looks like yours(the double hole type one) but when I got it from my sisters old closet it had glitter on it, so i spent 40-50 minutes taking the glitter off
Atleast you saved momey
0:50 top right corner you can actually get these at hot topic!! i own the set of the dice necklace, safety pin chain and safety pin chain choker!
Grunge outfit: *JUST WEAR OVERSIZED T-SHIRT ON EVERYTHING*
I never thought about layering like that you are a lifesaverrrr.
Where did you get the guitar pick earrings of Freddie Mercury
Etsy!
I love how this grunge edgy looking girl is in a very colorful well lighted white room..
just keep in mind that this isnt grunge, it is e-girl/boy, and that grunge is an alternative subculture built off of poverty in the 90’s. and in order to “be grunge” you have to listen to the music, and respect the morals and political opinions that they had in the early 90’s, abd then only then is it the stye
agreed, not to mention that the subculture was built off of poverty which was why a lot of the time grungey clothing was and is from charity shops and thrift stores as well as hand-me-downs.
Omg that Queen shirt!!😍😍
As soon as I saw you had on a Queen t-shirt I knew I could trust you
Most informative, least boring, video I've seen in a while. Straight to the point. 👌👏👏👏

All these fits are hard 🔥‼️
well... i think this is the e-girl style whithout eye liner
this style has been around years before egirls
@@martlakokaia This isn’t grunge tho so you could call this egirl without eyeliner. Grunge is all about anti-consumerism and anti-capitalism and this isn’t it. And like you need to listen to grunge music to be grunge.
@@boredmoodlet3611 I know all that lmao but the egirl thing is changing all like a year ago it was striped shirts and band t-shits which is taken from other alernative subcultures and alt people wore it before egirl became even a thing
now 100 gecs monster energy demonias and all that stuff is trending and now ekids dress like that and the previous style has basically gone extinct
Not all the stuff she listed is grunge but not really egirl either
Love your Queen shirt!!
I wanna try this style
You should! It's really fun :)
i love how positive you aree and confident i love it
Woah. The balance when showing her socks. If it were me. I'd be on my face.
can grunge be a lot of blacks and grays with some neon green pops?
Lol she clearly is being ironic. I love it lol
Honestly i just put a cotton or striped long sleeved thin sweater. Then i put a short sleeved hoodie over it. Honestly looks really nice
OMG DO YOU HAVE A FREDDIE PICTURE ON YOUR WALL AHHHHHH

*me clicks on here and just about to go through the video real quick*
*sees her wearing that queen t-shirt*
me: IM STAYING
Where did you get the second pair of jeans from?😊
This isn't grunge. This is just, egirl.
Omg this is exactly what I needed thanks!
grunge is to use any type of clothing, but if you really want an "aesthetic" you can simply take the oldest clothing you have, don't need too many accessories. It's not about dressing cool, but not giving a damn about fashion... it's more about attitude than looking.
i already knew everything, still got inspired and this video helped me
Those aren’t grunge outfits it’s just the modern aesthetic. Literally one google search and you would know what you are talking about
Skunk Limbs it's modern grunge
Nate Burrows no bro it’s e girl “aEsThEtIc”
No need to be rude 🙄
