      Lighting and simple effects can dramatically enhance a scene, the light from the window and rain falling is indeed a great use of those two.
      As a side note I’ve always enjoyed watching rain slide down glass or a car windshield, watching the imperfections in the glass or dust on it or other things change the paths of the trails of rain, some of the streams collecting and pooling in some areas, and finally falling. And this sounds silly, I know, but it’s something I’ve used to disprove we are living in a simulation, because if we were eventually we’d see the same patterns, a loop in the rain sliding down the glass.

    This episode is brilliant on so many levels, but what makes it really clever to me is that the angels never move when we can see them, even if the characters can't. It fits with the quantum weirdness of how they turn to stone when seen by *any* living thing, and it subtly puts us in the characters shoes and immerses us in the sitation they're in.
    The Angels weren't props, by the way. They hired extremely talented performers who managed to stay incredibly still when needed. The episode of Doctor Who Confidential (the behind-the-scenes companion show that ran alongside Doctor Who at the time) about this episode was fascinating.

  • @dlweiss
    @dlweiss 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +21

    It's a measure of just how brilliant Carey Mulligan is, that she's able to make Sally such an instantly loveable, fascinating character we're ready to root for. One single episode, but she remains one of the best ever. :)

    • @moonlightbay4814
      @moonlightbay4814 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yes. Apparently the script was written to allow Carey Mulligan to return as a companion for the following series (hence the way the doctor looks at Sally at the end). Carey Mulligan ultimately turned the offer down because she was getting offers from Hollywood - well-deserved.

  • @Jumpyman_thegamerYT
    @Jumpyman_thegamerYT 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +19

    If you’re curious, there’s a 4th wall break feature that the weeping angels have. Ever notice how they don’t move even when the characters on screen clearly aren’t looking at them? That’s the feature I’m talking about. The audience looking at the angels is what freezes them. They only move when no-one is looking at them (for example, if a character on screen moves in front of the camera in front of our line of sight, blocking the angel for a second or 2).

    • @manticore5733
      @manticore5733 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It was a wonderful unwritten rule... it's a shame they didn't stick to it, sometimes they don't realise how great such a simple aspect can boost a character or setting throughout it's appearances = a "have you ever noticed" feature is always a good thing to keep hold of... unless you have a big payoff when it's finally broken.

    • @Jumpyman_thegamerYT
      @Jumpyman_thegamerYT 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@manticore5733 Well, they did stick to it. In ‘The time of Angels’ and ‘Flesh and Stone’, the same rule can clearly be observed. The angels moving in the dark (because the audience can’t see them either) was a big example of this.
      Edit: I got the episode titles wrong 😅. They have now been changed to their correct titles.

    • @manticore5733
      @manticore5733 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Jumpyman_thegamerYT I was thinking of Flesh & Stone - it has angels moving when (only) the viewer can see them - breaking that 'unwritten rule': it wasn't needed and could have been done with changes between multiple perspective shots... i.e. give the illusion of characters moving smoothly through the scene whilst the angels are constantly in slightly different positions.

    • @Jumpyman_thegamerYT
      @Jumpyman_thegamerYT 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@manticore5733 I think that scene you’re referring to may be implying that the Angels are always statues, and that they are just able to move when not seen. As the 10th Dr says: “The moment they are seen by any other living creature, they freeze into rock. No choice, it’s a fact of their biology”. I may be interpreting this wrong, but after looking at it again, this was my interpretation.
      Originally, the Angels were only supposed to be a one-time monster featuring in ‘Blink’. However, they were so popular that the show runners decided to bring them back for more episodes. So I think their new abilities stem from the fact they weren’t planned.

    • @manticore5733
      @manticore5733 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@Jumpyman_thegamerYT No, the aspect we're talking about is the apparent unwritten rule that the angels being observed by us, the viewers, is sufficient to keep them stone - in most episodes they only changed/moved when off-camera, which is a great storytelling aspect that makes the viewer part of the experience... unfortunately in F&S they showed them moving on-camera so it stopped 'the viewer' being part of it. If they'd kept that aspect intact it leaves that small thought in the back of your mind that they're part of our world - because of the "they're quantum locked, like stone, when observed": as soon as they moved, it subconsciously tells us that we're not part of their world and they lose some of their impact, and that then taints their impact in all other episodes too.
      I'm not saying they're no longer great and creepy characters, just that they lost that subconscious itch as it were.

    So good you don't even miss the Doctor (& Martha) who was hardly in it. I love the fact that Steven Moffat has written the story while staying in canon because the Second Doctor is mixed up in the War Games at this time, just prior to the Moon Landings, in 1969. With the Third Doctor being stranded, his TARDIS disabled, because of his exile to Earth following the judgement by the Time Lords.

    This episode is perfection. It's such a simple concept, both the blinking thing but also sending people back in time forcing them to live out their lives in the past. It's episodes like this that make it clear why Moffat was chosen as the next showrunner. A lot of people say the same thing you did about wanting to show this to people to get them into Doctor Who. I do understand the logic but I don't subscribe to that belief. I think you NEED an episode with the Doctor and it needs to be a little weird too. The things that make Blink great are things that would make it a great horror movie apart from Doctor Who. You need a great Doctor Who episode.

    The whole way that DVD conversation is put together is so skillful- it works when she is in her friend's flat in the middle of the night, and then again when she is 'talking ' to The Doctor at Wester Drumlins.
    Such a clever way to have a 'Doctor Light' episode (which they brought in from Series 2 as a way of managing the filming schedules after the debacle of Series 1) without us feeling he isn't there.

    For me the best episode in the 2000s era. It makes sense, as much as any Dr Who episode, and it answers all your questions so you know the writer had worked this out properly. The Doctor isn't in it much, just enough to be a part of it, but it's Sally's story.

    Possibly the best episode ever. And Sally Sparrow actress, Carey Mulligan, got a massive career boost from it, including a best actress Oscar nomination.

    One thing everyone misses at first - including me - we see angels as statues when no one is looking at them EXCEPT US. The statues are aware of the audience.

    Steven Moffat - master of the wibbly wobbly timey whimey - first The Girl in the Fireplace* and now this Dovtor-lite episode - can't wait until you get to...(comment deleted due to hyping).
    * and before that The Empty Child and The Doctor Dances
    Well before the reboot he wrote The Curse of the Fatal Death" a Doctor Who (not in canon) comedic episode for Children in Need. Do watch it at some point - maybe around the 50th anniversary - probably a good time to see the movie with Paul McGann as well

    If I recall correctly, Moffat got the idea when he walked past a graveyard. The graveyard had a statue of a chained up weeping angel with a sign "construction not safe" or similar. Years later, when he walked past the graveyard again, the chains and sign were still there, but the statue was gone.
    Such a cool thing to take inspiration from. And it managed to give us one of the best "evil" creatures ever created.
    Also, while 11 is my personal favourite Doctor, this is probably my absolute favourite episode in Doctor Who.

    For promo for the movie _Maestro,_ Carey Mulligan (Sally) and Bradley Cooper did that thing where they asked each other questions about themselves. She asked him who played the Doctor on her _Doctor Who_ episode, and he guessed Matt Smith. Tennant recently hosted the BAFTAs, where they were both nominated. He was doing a bit in the aisle of the audience and had Mulligan introduce him to Cooper.

    I've often thought that dealing with the angels would be a lot easier if someone would just think to alternate having one eye open and the other closed. Of course, that would remove all the tension from the episode, which is a real corker, but never mind. :D

    I once told you that I wouldnt trust any other reactor to watch Dr Who with, and this proves why - you just get it! This is one of my favourites and it was great to see you enjoying it too 😊
    On a side note, after I watched this with my then 12 year old daughter, I bought her a life-sized cardbord cutout of a weeping angel and put it by the side of her bed for her to wake up to. I can still hear the scream 17 years later 😂 It became her favourite possession. She is fine, by the way, no psychological issues at all. That I know of. Yet 😱

    So, some true facts about this episode and how it shocked moffet that it had became one of the most popular. When originally writen this was a heavy cgi episode with a completely different story line but bbc decided to cut the shows budget at last minute and both Tennant and Agyeman where unavailable to film due to other commitments so moffet had to rewrite the whole episode within a day and "Don't Blink" was born.
