    You were right about the audience - the angels don't move when they're on screen because the Audience is looking at them. It's a bit of a 4th Wall lean, but that's part of what makes it so brilliant.

      i f**king hate those episodes. when we SAW weeping angel move i was so pissed. and it was still stone, they only turn to stone when observed, so seeing a stone angel move is just stupid. god i hate it so much

    • @selkie76
      @selkie76 6 ปีที่แล้ว +56

      No, they're quantum-locked when observed (literally frozen in time - none of their atoms can be moved relative to any other, which is what renders them indestructible). Their appearance won't change so they'll still look like statues when they move. Saying that they "turn to stone" is just dumbing the concept down for the benefit of the widest possible audience. They are probably actually made of stone - silicon-based life is a common enough sci-fi trope.

    Steven Moffat said once in an interview that he got the inspiration for the weeping angels when one time he walked past a closed, chained up graveyard with a sign that said something like "unsafe structure" and he obviously was curious enough to take a peek at it. There was a statue of a weeping angel, and that's where he got the idea. But that's not all - a couple of years later he happened to be there again (this time with his son) and he went to show his son the original weeping angel and it wasn't there, even though the graveyard was still abandoned and deemed unsafe.

    The fact that we are participants in the story, in a small way by keeping the Angels at bay by seeing them on screen is terrifying.
    It makes the Angels so much more terrifying, makes them seem more than just fiction.

  •  6 ปีที่แล้ว +135

    So, apparently, after Love and Monsters, none of the writers wanted to be the one who'd have to do another Doctor-lite episode (which they had to due to budget). At the same time, Moffat promised he'd write an episode for series 3, but because of Sherlock, he kept putting it off, until it was almost too late, so as a way of apology, he took it on himself to bear the brunt of the Doctor-lite episode for this series. The rest, as they say, is history.

    • @TheTrainfan44
      @TheTrainfan44 6 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      I am not sure how accurate that is as this episode aired in 2007 and was probably filmed in 2006 while Sherlock did not air until 2010 so I don't think it was any part of this.

    •  6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      It may have been Jekyll or whatever Moff was doing at the time. It's been a while since I read this tidbit and my brain just thought, "Oh, Moffat, he must have been doing Sherlock when he wasn't doing Doctor Who."

    • @lawrencegough
      @lawrencegough 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Interesting. Moffat based it on a story he had published in DW annual 2006 called What I Did on My Christmas Holidays' By Sally Sparrow. The story really just covers the final scene, the realisation that Sally gives the future Doctor the key to helping her in the past. Also the weeping angels aren’t in it.

    • @darcybrummett7004
      @darcybrummett7004 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Love and Monsters is definitely not my favorite episode. At the beginning when Rose and the Doctor were chasing that creature, it made me think of Scooby Doo. I thought it was pretty corny to see on DW. th-cam.com/video/Ueh3nsI_7ts/w-d-xo.html

      @dajtoad1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@darcybrummett7004 Well yes, I imagine that's why no one wanted to do another Doctor Lite episode. Because that's almost universally regarded as the worst episode of Nu Who. No one wanted to bear the risk of being the one responsible of a repeat of that fiasco.

    In most tv shows, especially Doctor Who, there is always one episode a season in which the episode has very few sets, locations, graphics, etc. to save budget for a more grander finale. Doctor Who shows that these episodes, despite not having the flashy effects, can be some of the best of the season...such as Blink or Midnight

    I remember first time I saw this. It was in the middle of the night, I was in my bed, with my back towards the door, in a pitch dark room. Let's just say that wasn't the optimal way to watch this episode if you're already afraid of the dark...
    I think it's definitely the best examples of a Doctor-lite episode. I love it. It's not one of my absolute favorites, but I understand why people love it so much. It definitely opened up DW at the time, showed people what the show could really do. It's a bit of a cult-classic, and it has the highest rating on IMDB out of all the episodes (yes, IMDB isn't the most trustworthy ranking system, but still).
    Fun fact, the writer of this episode (Steven Moffat, also wrote the "Are you my mummy?" and The Girl in the Fireplace) had no idea when he wrote this episode that it was going to become such a classic, and he's still amazed by that.
    So glad you guys enjoyed it! And got freaked out. As you should. And nicely done with the pops, Aaron and Calvin! :D

    This episode is great! It has a real scare factor to it. The Weeping Angels are very intimidating and creepy villains. The fact that they have the advantage and opportunity to kill you slowly when you're not looking at them makes them a real threat. The whole situation of not being able to blink or turn your back away when surrounding or encountering them is so intense and makes things extra nervous. Eric and Shane's reaction to this episode was great. Glad they enjoyed it. This is one of the strongest Doctor Who-lite episodes. Sally Sparrow is also a great one off character (who could have also been a great potential companion).

    There's a theory that The Weeping Angel's are undead Time Lords. That's why they feed off of time energy. Vampires feed off blood because they can't produce their own. Weeping Angel's feed off time because they can't produce their own time energy like they could when they were Time Lords.

      I honestly don't get how the Daleks managed to make an entire generation of kids hide behind the sofa. I guess it may have been because it was before the age of CGI and the ability to make genuinely scary bug-eyed monsters. So Daleks were unique in their position as non-humanoid aliens that didn't look like they were made of bubble wrap.

    Blink was my first episode I ever watched of Doctor Who. I was on a school field trip and we were staying the night in the gym in some school across the state. A group of friends brought their portable DVD player and we watched this in the dimly lit hallway, half of it chained off and lit by a single lightbulb. Immediately after the episode ended the lone lightbulb blinked and the whole group freaked. It was great.

    Note how none of the angels ever move on screen here, even if no character is looking at them. It kinda indicates that one of the people that prevents them from moving is you. They are aware of you.
    (Spoiler: Of course this gets fucked up in later appearances since the Weeping Angels were basically ruined in every other appearance, but we're talking about the masterpiece that is Blink here)

      Time of Angels was... alright. The problem is that Blink basically got the Weeping Angels perfect, they work perfectly in this story, have enough mystery around them to be especially interesting and were very original here. They were never going to match that and never have, all other appearances have just been second rate by comparison.

      Did you notice in Blink that the Doctor says about the same Angel touching Billy as him thus sent back to the same time, and the crew hypothesised that the same one touched Martha. But in AtM (series 7) when a certain character asks if the same angel will take her back to the same time as the other character sent back (avoiding names just in case) the Doctor says "no one knows"
      Err.... It happened to him!!!

    Probably my favorite David Tennant Doctor Who episode. I knew about the Weeping Angels thanks to a sleepover when I was little where my friend retold an episode as a scary story (and it worked). Years later, when I finally decided to give Doctor Who a try, I was amazed how unerving they were; and I just now realized how good the editing for this episode was.

  • @JaneDoe-bo5qw
    @JaneDoe-bo5qw 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think the idea is if they are being observed by anything (not including themselves), they can't move, even something like a camera, unless something prevents it from being observed. However, if the camera fizzes out for a second, or something like that, they can move. So the way to survive a Weeping Angel apocalypse is to have a suit made of GoPros all with different batteries that are constantly being recharged by the sun and wind plus a backup generator and energy storage. That way, the angels are always being observed, and can't sneak up on you.

    • @ethanquirk28
      @ethanquirk28 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jane Doe they need to be observed by something that can perceive them. The gopro idea is absolutely the worst move you could make. Theres a reason there is never any footage or pictures of the weeping angels. That which holds the image of an angel becomes itself an angel. You’d just spawn a new angel for every gopro that captures its image

    Each season has an episode referred to as "Doctor lite". It's an episode where the two leads can go off and film another episode at the same time as the lite one to save time. Although these days they film less episodes that somehow take 9 or 10 months which is kind of insane.

    I get what his trying to say at 20:00. In that, if the dude is writing down what the Doctor said, and the Doctor is just reading what the dude wrote down. Where did the original conversation occur for one of them to begin the cycle. It's a paradox.
    & is it possible that in the first iteration of the Doctor having the conversation, he did fully explain the complexity of time. But the dude didn't have any clue what he was saying so just wrote 'Wibbly Wobbly Timey Wimey stuff', then that's why she mentions him writing in shorthand.
