Yep, 2nd only to the daleks (though he's worked with them against the dr) the master is a renegade time lord from classic... the ying to the drs yang...
Yesss I’m so happy you’re releasing them all in one go. I love Derek Jacobi’s performance in this one and I wish he’d gotten to play more of The Master on screen, he’s excellent at Big Finish.
I'll never forget watching this episode for the first time, and my wife and I looked at each other when they revealed the pocket watch, and said in unison, "The Master?"
I think Russel said he wanted to have Jack on the outside of the tardis in the opening credits but for whatever reason he didn't. There is a fan version that does this and it's hilarious lol. Also Jack had been there over 100 years so in Boom Town there were two Jacks at the same time
The Master is an often reoccurring classic who villain - not just a timelord, but the Moriarty to the Doctor's Sherlock; a timelord who was always searching for ways to extend his life beyond the 12 regenerations limit with blatant disregard for other lifeforms. He was always one step ahead of the Doctor and often used him as a pawn in his plans - so basically very dangerous and unpredictable.
Derek Jacobi is such a legend of an actor. He played the turn from Yana to the Master so well. I remember my mum was quite mad when the master regenerated because she loved John Simm and didn't want him to be evil. Of course now we know he plays evil and crazy so well. Fun fact: the little kid playing Crete won a competition for his role. It was weeks long and was part of a companion show called Totally Doctor who. It was a fun show for kids that aired just alongside this one series
All these years, countless reactions it, and I never noticed until you pointed it out that Chantho didn't say "Chan" in that critical moment. I think any old-school fan watching this episode (who hadn't been spoiled) just *knew* who Professor Yana was going to become, once he revealed his watch. 😀
“The rifts been active” - the doctor casually missing the appearance of a relative of the beast appearing in cardiff… I wonder if he’ll miss anything else…
The Master is an old enemy of The Doctor but they use to be friends too. It basically a friend and Enemy thing between them. Also can I just say I am glad that your a reaction who listens and pay attention to what going on in these TV Shows unlike other reactions who talk over it and miss the important stuff. You become one of my favourite TH-cam reactions. 👍
If you think about it, the four beat drum beat is basically just, the heart beat of a Time Lord. Beats 1 and 3 from one heart, and 2 and 4 from the other. One of the voices you hear temping Yana to open the watch is actually one of the part incarnations of The Master from the Classic series.
My thoughts when originally watching this episode: “…another Time Lord?!…oh **** it’s the Master.” He is basically the evil opposite of the Doctor. In the classic series he travelled around in his TARDIS trying to gain power and causing chaos and destruction. Derek Jacobi is a British acting legend. The way his face changes in the moment of transformation is so brilliant.
Derek Jacobi on Doctor Who was something I never thought I’d see. I’ve loved him ever since I saw I, Claudius on reruns on Masterpiece Theatre back around 1990. If you are looking for a never-reacted-to miniseries that is widely considered to be one of the greatest ever made, check out I, Claudius! Jacobi is such a brilliant actor. He shows up a lot in Kenneth Branagh films. He’s great as the Chorus in Henry V, a film I still like to play on tv when I’m cleaning my apartment. “O for a muse of fire /That would ascend the brightest heaven of invention.”
@@alyzu4755 Chan, I saw him playing Hamlet in around 1980, tho! And then again a couple of years ago when he did 'An Evening With . . . ' being interviewed by Anne Reid, the plasmavore from Smith and Jones!
@@alyzu4755 It was a great evening. He told stories of his upbringing in one of the poorest parts of East London, talked about Laurence Olivier, talked about Doctor Who. I was third row stalls, just a few feet from the great man (and Anne too of course!).
A hilarious moment in the Jack/Martha/Doctor running scene is this: the Doctor Who Confidential episode reveals that David and John were racing to see who was the fastest while poor Freema was just struggling to keep up!
20:58 About Professor Yana: Yep, a shame but that was not really a person. Like when The Doctor had to hide himself with The Family of Blood, it created a powered down template of the Time Lord in question. The Master kept his genius though bc he created those food based circuits even as a mere human. But his arrogance always gets him in trouble, so he toned it down REALLY LOW to get along. Though he may be the 10th Doctor, this is at least the 17th Master (maybe more). When we first saw him way back we were told he was already on his last life (13th) and has "died" a few more times since...
I would definitely recommend Life On Mars (the UK version) - Jon Simm is brilliant in it, quite a lot of actors from Dr Who are in it, and it's time-travel related
So many great episodes in season 3 and 4. Utopia is riiiight up there! Incredible cliffhanger! Derek Jacobi was the perfect choice for the role, as brief as it was. All of us Classic Who fans were wondering how and when they’d work The Master into the show. He’s THE big bad (aside from the Daleks) from Classic Who. You can imagine the levels of freak out happening when this episode came out. 😁
This cliffhanger was amazing! We had to wait for a full week to get the next part…you youngsters nowadays with your Vance streaming services and DVDs are so lucky! Get off my lawn lol…sorry, angry old man took control for a moment. I am so enjoying this ride with you.
I always wondered if Jack's line about 'facing three daleks...death by extermination' caused Yana's tears due to the fact that the Master had himself been killed by the Daleks in the TV movie, and the memory of that was coming to the surface?
My only complaint about this episode is that they didn't show Jack clinging to the outside of the TARDIS during the title sequence. Russel T Davies said in an interview once that he regrets not doing that too. There is a funny edit of it somewhere here on youtube though!
"He looks familiar - Have you seen I, Claudiua? - a BBC miniseries about the Julio-Claudian Roman Emperors -- Derek Jacobi (Dr Yana) played Claudius. George Baker (Login in the Classic Who serial Full Circle) played Tiberius, his brother. Brian Blessed (King Vultan in Flash Gordon) played Augustus, his grandfather. Sean Phillips (Rev. Mother Moiham in the David Lynch version of Dune) played Livia, his grandmother. Patrick Stewart (Capt. Jean Luc Picard in ST: TNG) played Sejanus, the prefect of the Praetorian Guard who is having an affair with Claudius' sister. John Hurt (Kane in Alien) played Caligula, his nephew who had a condition simillar to that of Dr. Yana - only he described it as the hoof beats of galloping horses. And a lot of British actors and actresses I'm not as familiar with.
The drums the drums the neverending drumbeat. Open me you human fool. Open me and summon the light and receive my majesty. DESTROY HIM! THEN YOU WILL GIVE YOUR POWER TO ME! Chills every time
One of the greatest cliffhangers in Doctor Who history. There's so much working about this episode. The Torchwood puzzle piece (you did it right; I, and I think a lot of other people, didn't see Torchwood until well after this season), Jack catching up with 10, the super unique and interesting setting. But my gods, the Master reveal is amazing. The first other Time Lord in the show since the revival. It is so well done. No one expected the Chameleon Arch to be used beyond it's debut episode, and then BAM! This strange man at the end of the Universe has one. Derek Jacobi is amazing in both roles. Hot take though, this episode also ruined regeneration forever. Prior to 2005, every time we see a Time Lord regenerate it visually looks a bit different, depending on whatever that director wanted and what special effects were available at the time. In this episode, they wanted a visual cue to signify to the audience that the Master is the same as the Doctor, so his regeneration looks almost identical to when Eccleston did it. But now (I guess very minor spoilers for the show going forward) every single regeneration in Doctor Who looks the same: exploding with golden light, standing up, arms out. It's not a bad look, it's just...a bit boring after a while.
Simms is great but I can't help wishing that we had got more of Derek Jacobi's master - just like I also wish we had got more of John Hurt as the war doctor. Both have appeared in Big Finish audio adventures but it would have been better if they had appeared in more TV adventures.
If you want something that will really blow your mind… those drums Yana has been hearing… listen to the Doctor Who opening theme. You’ve been hearing those drums for quite a while now. I can’t wait until you finally hear the story of what you’ve actually been hearing this entire time :-D

But that twist! Just a fantastic payoff that is one of my favorite, though I absolutely won't spoil any you've yet to see that top it.
And the return of someone us Classic Who fans remember well. Had NO CLUE they were going to do this. And I LOVE Derek Jacobi. He will always be the Emperor Claudius from I, Claudius to me. But he is good as Yana here.

Each season has brought back the major villain introduced during the time of each Doctor so far: Daleks for the First, Cybermen for the Second, The Master for The Third. How far ahead are you on the actual watching of the show compared to these uploads?
I’ll be watching 4x7 later this week! The goal is to be 2 months ahead of the TH-cam release.
Cassandra was a specific case - she was the last ""REAL" human - before space and other worlds mutated them - still look pretty much the same even though Depending on how Jack relates to the Cassandra timeline he may be one of those mutated human. It's all wibbly wobbly timey wimey.
I adore your doctor who reactions
Oh, from many viewpoints, the Doctor very much has created many monsters. Not intentionally, but the better he us, the better his foes must become.
There's never been a 3-parter in modern Who,but this and the (actual) 2-parter that follows is nearest to being a 3-parter❤️👍🎩
Never? Are you sure?
What about Gur Erory Syrfu, Gur Nyzbfg Crbcyr, and N Tbbq Zna Tbrf gb Jne? Or Rkgerzvf, Gur Clenzvq ng gur Raq bs gur Jbeyq, and Gur Yvr bs gur Ynaq? I'd even argue that Gur Jbeyq Rabhtu naq Gvzr, Gur Qbpgbe Snyyf, and Gjvpr Hcba n Gvzr could be considered a three-parter.
(Episode titles have been rot13'd to prevent spoilers.)
Eyyy finally, been waiting on this one :D
I'll never wait to long between episodes ever again, promise!
Oh hey, I have the same hoodie!
I love this channel man
Meet your new MASTER!
How cliffhangers should be done.
Endlich ist es da!!!
Chan one of the great reveals in all of Doctor who tho. Chan probably the most thrilling since the Doctor talking with the Controller about her masters and shaping the Earth and her masters, they fear the Doctor tho.
You Are Not Alone.
16:30 they'll explain later.
Was "Blink" only a week ago? It seems longer.
lol no it was like a month ago. This was recorded a week after I watched blink and intended to be released accordingly, but episode 12 kept getting blocked so I delayed 11 until I worked it out so the wait between 11 & 12 wouldn't be so long.
@@CasualNerdReactions "It seems like so long since I've done Doctor Who." Yes, it does. ;)
@@HuntingViolets Yea that intro ended up being even more appropriate than I intended 😅
@@CasualNerdReactions that makes sense.
Yeah, I wish he hadn't regenerated -- not long enough with Derek Jacobi.
I agree doctor who captain Jack is more fun than the touchwood capt jack and I love him more here.
Well you’re in luck cus John simm is like Simon peggs dark twin
The Master is a recurring charachter, going back to the original series.
Wait till you get to the Season 5 finale, its even bigger!
