    This episode is dedicated to Howard Attfield, who played Donna's dad Geoff Noble in "The Runaway Bride". He was set to reprise the role for this season, but he was already battling cancer when filming started. He filmed his first few scenes while undergoing chemotherapy, but it became apparent that he would not be able to continue and he did pass away later that month.
    The producers decided to substitute the dad with a granddad in the script, and to fill that position with Bernard Cribbins as Wilf, the newspaper man from Voyage of the Damned. The scenes on the hill that had previously been filmed with Attfield were filmed again with Cribbins, but the originals were later included wih the boxset.

    Funny you should say “I love that it’s raining”. In an audio commentary for this episode, David and Catherine recalled how it was the worst scene to film because they were running tight on schedule and the alley was off a street which had a nightclub on the corner. They said, in addition to the on and off rain, they found the scene so hard to film because of the music and drunk students shouting across to them like “It's Doctor Who!" etc.

    The scene of Doctor and Donna recognizing each other shows off the amazing chemistry Catherine Tate and David Tennant: the script just said "Doctor and Donna recognize each other", but it's them who decided to improvise and mime

      I completely believe that! It felt so organic.

    • @ftde1
      @ftde1 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@CasualNerdReactions Not likely to be true though, sorry. The original script (and those of many more episodes) is freely available at the official BBC Writers website (Script Library ➡️ Whoniverse) and very much details what they are mimicking.
      (To be fair, this is a late version of the script, that already features Wilf instead of Geoff, so this bit could in theory have been adjusted as well. However, what they are "saying" also makes perfect sense within the episode.)

    • @ftde1
      @ftde1 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I just checked the Confidential for this episode, which confirms that the script page was the same as it is in the published revision.
      That's not to say this was not a challenge for Catherine Tate as the script does not lay out HOW she is supposed to mime this bit:
      Donna does a little mime: I, came here, trouble, read about it, internet, I thought, trouble = you! And this place is weird! Pills! So I hid. Back there. Crept along. Heard this lot. Looked. You! Cos they...
      And on 'they', she gestures and looks towards Miss Foster.

    • @IslesYankeeLady
      @IslesYankeeLady 12 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      @@ftde1I came to talk about this and I think at some point they say or Catherine says the script said “Catherine will do something here.” That could well be a draft that got retyped before the final one, or Catherine was exaggerating a bit.

    Grandad (Bernard Cribbins) was once a Doctor Who companion - sort of. He was in the Doctor Who movie* Daleks' Invasion Earth 2150 A.D. starring Peter Cushing (Grand Moff Tarkin/Dr. Frankenstein) as the Doctor in 1966 - which is in no way canon to the TV series but was based on a second season Doctor story. The Doctor's not even an alien - just a human who cobbled together a time and space machine that looks like a police box. Cribbins took over the role of the male companion (at the time in the TV series the Docor's companions were an adult male, an adult female and a teenage girl).
    Cribbins cameo in the Christmas Special was supposed to be a one time thing but the actor who played Donna's father in The Runaway Bride died before this series went into production. So they asked Cribbins if he's be interested; he said yes and Donna got a grandad - he's the same character from Voyage of the Damned.
    *It's the second movie starring Peter Cushing as the Doctor. First one was Doctor Who and the Daleks (1965) based on the first season story that introduced the Daleks in 1963.

    Everyone's been saying it so I won't repeat what you've already read countless times. This was the first episode where Wilfred Mott (Bernard Cribbins) really got to shine. You will quickly learn to love him as we do.
    Bernard Cribbins passed away in 2022 at the age of 93. I won't say "sadly passed away" because he lived a good long life and was loved by millions. He passed not long after his wife did, some would say of a broken heart, so I hope that they're together again.
    Bernard Cribbins is one of the few celebrity deaths that I still get emotional over. Along with David Bowie and Robin Williams for me. Every time I see him on screen in Doctor Who, whether he's cheering Donna on or on the verge of tears over things I won't spoil, I just start happy crying. Humany Wumany.

    The Writer's Tale is a very fascinating book on the process of writing Series 4. It's basically a collection of long emails between RTD and "Doctor Who Magazine" writer Benjamin Cook where they liked to chat about his thoughts while he was writing this season. Penny actually has an interesting story. She *was* going to be the season's companion, but while RTD was writing, they managed to convince Catherine Tate to come back to the show, and so Penny wasn't needed. RTD chose to write her out as the companion that never was. A person that could have been a companion with her cleverness and curious mind, but who didn't *quite* meet the requirements of being able to handle the pressure of dealing with the dangerous bits of being with the Doctor.

    You’ve started on one of the most fun seasons. No smoldering romance, just The Doctor and Donna out having a great time… usually. More or less. It’s never exactly simple but yeah, fun.

    There is some cute stuff in this episode.
    I've lately been seeing some takes that the Doctor was not romantically in love with Rose, and I'm starting to incline that way. He was willing to send her off to the parallel world (indeed, he did) until she came back and refused, after all.
    It's nice to see someone see some validity in Martha's story, by the way. RTD thought showing unrequited love was important since almost everyone experiences it, although Agyeman would have liked to have dropped that part of the story.

    Trivia. Bernard Cribbins as wilf wasn’t originally meant to be. The role was originally Donna’s dad from thr xmas special but he sadly passed away before filming. So they decided to get Bernard back and fill the role as a granddad instead

    Funny you mention Penny being companion potential, because originally RTD was going to introduce a new companion for Series 4 called Penny Carter before they managed to get Catherine Tate back, so he just reused the name.

  • @andrewroberts299
    @andrewroberts299 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    I don’t think you recognised him, but Donna’s granddad, Wilf, was the same old man the Doctor met when he beamed down to Earth in the Christmas episode you’ve just watched, Voyage of the Damned. Played by the same actor, Bernard Cribbins. The reason why he was drafted in as Donna’s granddad is because the actor who played her dad in the Christmas episode she was in, The Runaway Bride, died from cancer between the making of that story and this one. Donna’s mother is played by the same actress who played her in The Runaway Bridge. You are gonna love Wilf as the season progresses.
    The character, Penny Carter, the journalist who was tied up for most of this story, was originally going to be the name of the new companion. It was only when Russell T Davies had the idea of asking Catherine Tate if she would like to come aboard the TARDIS as a companion (to which she agreed to do), that the Penny Carter character was dropped.
    Catherine Tate’s performance as Donna is gonna blow you away this season. She is funny, smart but also dramatically she will get you in the feels a lot!
    The bees are dying out, planets disappearing, The Shadow Proclamation - what does it all mean? Buckle up Chris for the best (at that time) season of Doctor Who there is!

    You have no idea...
    Penny WAS the original companion for this series before they decided to have Donna return. It's unlikely the Penny we have today is anything like the companion originally planned, who didn't last long, and this character was given her name as a slight tribute. It's a very interesting story that was virtually unknown for many, many years.

    Bernard Cribbins who played Donna's Granddad was in a Dr Who movie in 1966, with a remake of a first Dr story called "Daleks' Invasion Earth 2150 A.D." starring Peter Cushing as Dr Who, there are 2, this was the second one, they are both worth a watch, unless of course you're going to watch "Classic Who" at any point. Season 4 in my opinion is the best out of the first 4 seasons, enjoy.

    If you're missing Martha, there was an animated episode titled *The Infinite Quest* which broadcast during the previous series. Most reactors skip over it, but if you want another 45 minutes of Doctor Who content, then it would be something fun to react to.
    A second animated episode titled *Dreamland* aired alongside the specials which come after Series 4, so that's something to potentially watch at a *much* later date too.
