Angel D rather harshly made a valid point. The Scout is very tight and not easy to work on. However, many people agree it is one of the best looking bikes every made and want to own it. One thing I like about Harley is the endless variety of mods. The Victorys and Indians are so nice out of the box, you don't need to mod them very much. This is a good reason to like them. This makes them less expensive than Harleys. So far they are also proving to be very reliable machines. This video shows you how to get rid of the stock airbox and install a high flow filter. The stock airbox actually routes the air over the radiator to warm it up before entering the intake. This must have been done for some EPA reason. Getting rid of the stock airbox should make the bike run cooler and allow the intake to breather cooler air. www.IndianAftermarket.com also offers a true cold air intake. Improving performance is welcomed by most riders.
No matter what you ride, Harley, Honda or Indian, be safe and enjoy the great outdoors. Remember: "If life was easy most of us would be finished by now."

This fellow gives very good instructions but I want to caution you. You have to be very, very gentle and careful with the fuel line from the tank. I pushed it and twisted it and the plastic elbow joint on the tank end broke. So, read the manual about tank removal and replacement. Be gentle and don't twist the fuel line. And, it is a LOT easier if the tank is empty or close to it.
    Good luck.

J Simonin did you have to do a flash? Or add a fuel controller? Do you have aftermarket exhaust? Thinking of doing an intake upgrade but wonder what if it will affect performance at all.

The new air filter looks as though it will pull hot air from the top of the engine. Does any one make a heat shield or an air box to funnel cooler air directly to the intake?
I am thinking a box behind the inlet at the front of the frame that adds side scoop and shields the intake from the engine heat, as well as hot air passing through the radiator, may make more sense.
With all the effort required to make the change, more parts to assure the engine pulls not just more air, but the right air, would make more sense.

I used the Trask High Flow Air Cleaner For Indian Scout. Also have Trask slip ons that were made for the scout. Purchased both from Revzilla.com

So when you put this thing on it sucks the hot air right off top the engine. Instead of sucking the cool air from out in the hole. I don't get it, and it looks like something you could make yourself. You can buy an air filter and cut a little tube like that yourself.

+Angel D It doesn't matter if it's cool or hot air. It's less restrictive thus it will make more power and be better efficient. And yes, you could technically make it yourself. Award goes to you for figuring that out.

it did not get better for the performance, it will pick up a lot of engine heat and get lowers. It would be better to get outside.

so everytime you want to clean the air filter {re-oil} you have to do this again? I predict a lot of dirty air filters will be out there on Scout's. Not a good design at all. Same company made Victory's. Their steel frame bikes were so much easier to get to air filter.

Well... coming from working on every damn part of my 68 impala. This is VERY easy. People complain like this is hard. you're telling me there are bikes where its easier? (This is my first bike)

Title is misleading. Should be REPLACING FACTORY AIRBOX WITH K & N TYPE FILTER. This is not a vid about replacing the standard air filter in your scout.
I am very sceptical of this modification and would like to see dyno figs to support argument that it produces additional power. I have a 1983 CX650 which some clown has fitted with K and Ns
rather than just leaving the standard airbox in. CV carbs do not perform well without an airbox and people make these stupid changes because they think that K and Ns are COOL. and look good. Just BS.

Everytime I watch a video on the Scout, and I see how much crap you have to do. Just to do something that should be a simple mod. Im so glad I have a Harley they're so much easier to work on or modify. This is absolutely ridiculous to have to do all of this. The bike is just too complicated and not well thought out. American-style cruisers are bikes that the owners will heavily customized. Who would want to have to do all this crap or pay someone $70 $80 labor to do it.

+Angel D Nothing here seemed complicated to do. Unless removing some nuts/bolts and disconnecting/reconnecting some tubes is difficult. The comment just seems like a snobby fan boy comment. There are so many Harley's out there, no one bats an eye to them. The guy wanted something different. The fact that you need one wrench and two different sized heads to do it shows how simplistic it is. This should take 30 minutes at most to do - it's a bolt on. Replacing an intake on a Harley - even though it's side mounted intake - can take at least 15 minutes because of the mounting brackets. Someone who truly wants to customize a cruiser would want to start at a base they already like - in this case the guy wants to start with a Scout. Not only that, but if you were truly into customizing, the added 15~30 minutes would actually be enjoyable. I love my car and bike projects.

+Angel D I'm a MoCo fan and rider. But dude you can't say that Harleys are easy to work on or simple to mod! Have you ever try to change the three differents oils the HD's have? Have you ever try to remove the primary just to change de rear belt drive? Be a fan it's OK and let the fanatism for idiots.

+gooru4speed Its not hard to change the 3 oils on a Harley.

Full disclaimer, I don't own an Indian Scout, but the more videos I watch the more I like how it's put together. The frame going through the air box really saves space. I really love the puzzle aspect of it. I love puzzles and motorcycles and this really seems to combine the two.
