  • With the new exhaust that I recently installed I wanted to install a performance intake to take advantage of a little extra power. I chose the Indian performance intake for my 2020 Indian Scout Bobber Twenty and in this video I take you through step by step on how to install it. The job isn’t horrible and can be done by 1 person. If there are any questions, please leave in the comments below and I will try to get to them. I’m providing links below to the parts I’ve installed on my bike.
    The procedure is pretty easy and outlined in this video.
    Torque specs
    ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
    Mid frame bolts (4) 35 ft lbs.
    Front frame bolts top (2) 35 ft lbs.
    Front frame bolts bottom (2) 19 ft lbs.
    Fuel tank mounting bolts (4) 18 ft lbs.

    My man, doing the maintenance of his bobber, fearless about scratching a watch way more expensive than the bike itself 😅
    And most importantly, the best video i have seen about the matter, one of the few that doesn't remove completely the long screws that secure the frame to the engine and the rails of the airbox so he doesn't need to jack the bike risking it to falling to the ground

    I dont understand how the filter actualy filters air. it seems to be a straight air pass flow, the air comes in by the firs hole, then it is supose to pass by the filter but the filter is just on the top of the box and not betwen the throttle body and the intake of the box.... that doesnt filter anything... ¿how do that works?

    • @jombo1798

    Ok, I'm gonna ask the forbidden question:
    Why not just drill out your muffler baffles, and clip out the louvers in the airbox and have the retune done, save $1000?

    • @MessyGarageBMW
      @MessyGarageBMW  ปีที่แล้ว

      no forbidden questions my friend. I think the stock mufflers look ugly and weigh a ton compare to the V&H so that was not even a thought as it was an improvement on many levels. The airbox could be debatable but at that point you are at a point of diminishing returns as you'd have to then pay for a retune whilst the performance airbox comes with a reflash. Adding to this that I had a credit from Indian that I used on the box and it becomes a simple decision.

    What are your thoughts after install and calibration from the dealer? Would you recommend this set up? Did you gain a noticeable amount of HP/Torque?

    • @MessyGarageBMW
      @MessyGarageBMW  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I didn't put the bike on a dyno before or after but according to the "butt dyno" it feels like an improvement. The sound is deeper and you can hear it pulling air in when you get on it. Also I've notice better throttle response and it seems to pull better. I don't have empirical data to back it on my specific bike but I totally have no regrets and would do it again the same way. Since the Indian branded intake came with the reflash at no additional cost it was a great first step. I've heard the bike has much more to give if tuned further. My thought was that this will get me an increase and I can always go back and pay more for a more aggressive tune in the future.

    • @MessyGarageBMW
      @MessyGarageBMW  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      One reason was that the indian air intake came with a card to reflash the ECU to work with my new exhaust and air intake. Others would require me to buy a separate tune at a cost of a few hundred more USD. I can always do a tune later but for now I felt this was a good way to go. Bike sounds more aggressive and feels quicker and more responsive in the throttle.

  • @hulkhatepunybanner

    *Just a thought: isn't the plastic there to cool the air before it goes into the throttle body?* With the K&N air box, it seems that ambient hot air will get drawn directly into the throttle body and reduce performance.

    • @MessyGarageBMW
      @MessyGarageBMW  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No I think you are thinking more like a car and in that case the box is to try to keep hotter air from the engine away to let colder ambient or outside air in. The is no cooling effect in the plastic boxes of any air box whether it be car or bike. For example many v twins have the air intake outside and the best performance ones free airflow rather that restrict it.

    • @hulkhatepunybanner
      @hulkhatepunybanner 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@MessyGarageBMW *I looked it up and you're right that it's not about cooling.* However, I found out that the resonator both makes the engine quieter AND increases power. It seems that without the resonator the exiting pressure waves of air limits airflow through the intake tube. According to Cycle World, the resonator can boost torque by 10%. Anyways, awesome video. Good to know how to replace the filter. Though I'll leave that plastic piece where it is. Thanks.

    Excellent detailed install man. Beautiful bike as well. I just picked up a 2021 scout 69 bobber icon series. Almost bought the twenty like yours but I preferred the riding position of the 69. Anyways I just did Vance&Hines slash cut slip ons - sounds great. My question to you though is. Do you really feel this intake is worth it , I just picked up the K&N air filter replacement (so not a whole intake swap)and I am thinking that is going to yield me the same results as this stage one intake. Correct me if I'm wrong !
    The only thing I want to know does the calibration actually do more to the bike that I would want that. Thanks.

    • @MessyGarageBMW
      @MessyGarageBMW  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      At 7:35 or so I show the difference in the actual air box in that the new one is less restrictive. You are going to get more air into the bike with the new air box. I really do think it is worth it and although the K&N filter replacement is likely better than the stock paper one this mod give you the better filter and the less restrictive air box. I did notice an improved sound and throttle response with this and the exhaust modification. I know another of my friends did the S&S intake and he is happy with his but he had to pay extra for the tune. This one comes with the code to allow the dealer to remap the ecu for the increased air flow and exhaust.

    • @MessyGarageBMW

      You would have to raise the tank up to take a peak at the intake. The intake is more than just a K&N style filter though the box is less restrictive as well. To be sure you would have to remove the tank, unscrew the filter from the top and peak at the intake to see if it is the more open one or the stock restrictive airbox.

      If you just replaced the air filter to the K&N you may not have changed the air intake enough to require a remap. Usually if you do intake and exhaust it is recommended to do a remap. I recommend upgrading the air intake when you install the new exhaust and then do the remap. You could do the indian performance intake like I do here that comes with a remap cert for the dealership or you could look at the s&s or trask or other intakes offered but then you have to pay for the tune yourself and likely get a pv3.

      @@omegachar4754 I believe the performance filter media can be unbolted from the top and cleaned and reused. I know K&N also sells a replacement filter that bolts to the top of the airbox. I haven't cleaned mine yet so I don't have any details on the process.

    Hey brotha. Do the mid ape bars help with back pain issue from the drag bars?

      They are way more comfortable in my opinion. You spend less time folded in half.

    Did you use a jack for under the engine when you took off the frame bolts?

      I used a motorcycle lift under the engine to support the bike.

    Is there a value to stop fuel from coming out of the tank?

    • @MessyGarageBMW
      @MessyGarageBMW  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      When you disconnect the line it will have a very small amount of fuel that comes out but there is a valve that will stop the fuel from leaking out.

    Have you noticed and proformence improvement after installing this?

      Yes, both throttle response and sound are better with this and the exhaust mod.

    Do you need to have bike on lift to do this?

    • @MessyGarageBMW
      @MessyGarageBMW  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You need to support the bottom of the bike some since you will be removing bolts that hold the frame together. You can get the lift at places like harbor freight and amazon and they aren't too bad.

    how much did the dealer charge to re flash your bike?

    • @MessyGarageBMW
      @MessyGarageBMW  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think they charged an hour or 2 labor so it would depend on your dealers labor rate.

    To me this is just a way for them to make money. I did this "mod" to my bobber as well and it was the biggest pain in the a$$. No significant power gains and the only difference is a membrane that they have removed from the air box. What I did is, I took the paper filter and replaced it with a K&N fabric air filter. But this is the biggest scam I have seen from a motorbike company so far.

    • @tawaitai
      @tawaitai 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      After watching the video you are right! that air-box can be modified (cut-out) that piece restricting the air-flow and adding an aftermarket filter (foam/fabric) and achieve same performance if not better and a whole lot cheaper.

      @@tawaitai That is EXACTLY what my dad and I did to our bobbers. Dremel's are an amazing tool. We looked at a few options, Trask intake, Indians intake, K&N, Vance & Hines, you name them. We physically checked out Indians intake first, the one in this video, and when we seen the small minute difference between their "performance" intake and the one on our bikes, that is when I got the Dremel out. Just use a Dremel cutting bit and go slow to keep it neat. I used my Dremel flex shaft attachment so it was easier to get in and cut the hole. I even sanded the edges where I took the circle part out to make it nice and smooth.

    Why anyone would buy Indian's 'performance' filter over the Trask or S&S filter is beyond me. Those give you more air, handedly, and you can wash them. This you'll be replacing in 10k miles or less. Pointless.

    • @MessyGarageBMW
      @MessyGarageBMW  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      One reason is that this box is less restrictive than the stock and it comes with the code for the dealer to use to reflash everything so there is no need to pay for an aftermarket tune at this point. Some people will only want this, some will use it as a step to get other mods done before an all out tune. There are a lot of reasons. I can tell you from first hand knowledge the combo of this and slipons with the reflash change the bike for the better. The throttle is more responsive, the sound is deeper (compare to only slipons themselves).

    • @aaronsalinas518
      @aaronsalinas518 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MessyGarageBMW No, I understand the concept of the filter. Indian advertises it'll give you 5% more power. I'm saying, if you are going to go through all this trouble in swapping out the stock box/filter, then spend the extra $20-$50 bucks for a better air filter (Trask, A. Ness, S&S, etc) that you can clean and reuse after 10k miles, instead of dropping another $105 down the road. Especially if you are still with stock exhaust. You won't need a dealer code.

    • @MessyGarageBMW
      @MessyGarageBMW  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@aaronsalinas518 right, totally get what you're saying. It is highly situational. My bike will likely be in a state of constant evolution so it made sense for me at the time. Will it always stay like this? Can't say. I tend to tinker with things a lot so it is likely videos I've made will have parts that are no longer on my bikes or cars. It is constant change.
