I have been so nervous to try and do this myself, but video is exactly what I needed to feel like I actually know what I'm doing! Having a blueprint to follow is so helpful, thank you!
Wow Man, that was killer. Your previous technical videos were what brough me to the channel. Getting all the steps laid out in order like this was wicked cool. Thanks, B
Jay, you are amazing! Thank you so much for this…..so many pearls of wisdom! You are such an invaluable resource to the VO community, especially those of us who are struggling to fully understand and appreciate all of the tools in their DAW. Also loved hearing your thought process for trimming the script. Bravo!
I can't wait to watch this! Thanks for doing this video! And if you get a chance, will you do a video showing how to use the mouth de clicker in the Izotope software. As soon as I feed my dogs I'll be back to watch this!
Hi JM … that was the bomb! Because of you I managed to get my first DIY demo reel done. I combine your blueprint and created a video demo reel. Thank you so much for sharing your insights !!! Would you like to have a listen and critique ? Cheers!
That's so great to hear! And I'd love to take a listen to see how it turned out. You can submit to the Subscriber Feedback videos elsewhere on the channel, or book a coaching/tech support session via my website if you want quicker feedback. :)
Hi Jay. Love your channel. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I hope you won't mind if I ask you a question. If you want to splice together bits of two takes of a vocal recording, recorded at different times and therefore with potentially different noise profiles, how would you handle noise reduction? Would you reduce noise on the two takes separately and then do another noise reduction on the finished track, when the various bits have been combined? The reason I'm asking is that I'm thinking if the two takes have different noise profiles and therefore different noise reduction done on them, there may be a detectable difference between the parts from one take and the parts from the other take in the final, spliced-together version. Or am I overthinking? Any words of advice would be much appreciated.
Great question! Provided you've recorded the takes in the same space, and no major differences are present in the noise profile (i.e. AC is on in one, and off in another), then I wouldn't worry about it. If however, you've recorded the two takes in different environments entirely then I'd suggest re-recording. Reason being, noise reduction in almost all cases is a last resort fix for things that nothing can be done for, like a live interview. With VO it's better if we can control as many variables as we can. Hope that helps! And let me know if you have any other questions.
So you explain how to edit in Reaper with the standard included plugins, except for the clicks. Isn't there a good plugin for the clicks? I get them as well with my speech and I can't/don't want Izotope plugin in my workflow, since I work in Linux. Except for that incoherent piece of advice, your channel is quite useful. Congratulations!

Rock on! Good luck and have fun with it!
Wow! What I’ve been looking for to ease me into the world of voiceover work! I’ve been struggling on how to prepare my scripts.
Thank you sooo much.
I'm so glad!
This video is very well done and thought out. It's also a crash course in Reaper and will be easy to pick up if you're familiar with other DAWs/NLEs
Thanks very much! Glad you liked it. :)
You're honestly one of the most approachable VO creators out there. Thanks for sharing all of this info. Absolutely amazing!
Ah thanks! That means a lot to hear. :)
Great video. Clear and concise. Thank you.
Glad you found it useful!

I’m not sure Reaper has a declicker which is why I didn’t include that step.
hey good day, what mic pre and eq are you using?
Hey! Most are linked in the description. Eq varies, but I have other vids on that specifically. 😊
