Voice Overs! How to sound natural! What am I talking about? Well, some people can sometimes sound much different between when they’re ad-libbing, making stuff up as us humans all do all day, and when they’re reading from a script or a book. Peter Baker the UK based professional voiceover gives his invaluable tips!

If it sounds like you’re reading, even though everyone really knows that you ARE reading from a script, it is a big no-no in the world of voiceover, and of course TV presenters who are reading the teleprompter in the studio also need to sound natural.
Here’s a test. Switch on an audio recorder when you’re with a friend. Ask your pal to ask you a really random question. “What did you think of the film last night?” “ Why did you choose that car you bought?” They can ask anything at all, but something you couldn’t have prepared for. After your reply, play it back and transcribe the answer, in other words, write it out word for word. Then start the recorder again and this time you need to read your actual words again, but this time from the script. Now, you’ll have two recordings…firstly ad-libbed reply, then you READING your reply. You’ll have no excuse over any script not written in your voice style now, will you…the words WERE your own!
So notice the differences between the two recordings? The main differences will be those of imperfections in the first recording, that that’s good! Humans are imperfect; we have characters, we have personalities, we have moods and emotions, and we have breaths!! These AI enhanced text to speech computer programs that are supposed to take over the jobs of us voiceovers can’t do what we do, and computers will never be as good as us humans, certainly not in our lifetimes. The computer voice is TOO perfect.
Now, to sound “natural” when reading a script I’m not suggesting that you stumble all over it and leave gaps and breathe in the wrong place and so on, but a small but important amount of intelligent imperfection added to your performance will vastly improve the sound of it to the target audience.
And what I’ve just said, “the Target Audience” is key to all of this.
The “imperfections” have to come from understanding who the script is meant for. You need to get inside the head of the target audience - whether they are academics, buyers of goods, kids, hobbyists, whatever….know the kind of people you’re talking to and a natural empathy should grow between your voice and them. You’ll discover as you “tune in” to your audience, that certain words will glow a little bit more than others, you’ll find some words you’ll naturally emphasise, some sections you’ll find yourself smiling as you speak, while you become naturally serious in other parts. If you’re allowed to change the script, to colloquialise it more, with contractions, then do it. For example you would change “you would change” in the script to “you’d change” and so on…..
If it’s not happening for you naturally yet, don’t worry. Go through the script and mark it up, underlining key words to emphasise and marking in pauses and taking out pauses where it looks like one thought could suddenly and naturally jerk excitedly into the next.
So to sum up here, really try to UNDERSTAND the script and identify the Target Audience. If it’s a truly factual script or training narration, you need to OWN the script…you are the expert and people listening really want to learn from you, so determine the key parts of the scripts to emphasise and to make very clear. Then add subtle but important imperfections and emotions to really help you record the script you’ve been given in the most natural way possible.
I hope that’s been useful to you. More tips, tricks and course for voice talents you can find at www.VoiceoverMasterclass.com. Pop over there now, we’ll have the kettle on for you. All the best!

This is something I watched because of reading scripts for making TH-cam videos. I've not seen very many people talking about making TH-cam videos talk about HOW to read the scripts naturally even though they do talk about writing scripts.

It seems difficult for you to read it as though you're reading it; even when you are reading it, it sounds great to me, just as though you are not reading it. I wish I could voice over as naturally as you do when you are reading I would be very happy with that. I will definitely follow your advice and practice. Thank you for a great video.

I guess I've always done this naturally given my early youtube experience was spent reading off script I learned to improvise even when reading a script to do just what he has.
Its truely intriguing just what you do without thinking sometimes.

A lot of human behaviors are intuitive, and without thinking. I knew pretty much most of this video, just from naturally doing it.
I recorded myself and played it back, through voice changers, or whatever and kept improving. I'm not perfect, and occasionally I end up sounding like I'm narrating, even if I'm not reading off a script.

    Hi Peter,
    Thank you for the review,
isn't it an interesting idea to present Powerpoint presentation as videos using bullet points in a teleprompter? , to help you sound conversational in Voice Overs, better option than following word-for-word script?.

*Can you do a video on where to emphasize in a list. The last example you did had a list of 3 things: work, home and life in general. What about if that list has 5 or 6 things, where to "push" and not to "push" in a longer list? I had a script recently where I had to do this, and I did the "push" twice, once in the middle of the list and once on the last item in the list. Was this correct?*

    • @Voiceovermasterclass
      @Voiceovermasterclass  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

That's probably what I'd do as well, but it depends on the context and how casual or serious the read has to be. Lists are always awkward in a VO script when they're long - if i know the writer well I work with them to try to re-work it to avoid long lists!

I would definitely leave out the chuckle. You don't want to sound like you're reading, but you also don't want to sound like you're acting. Whenever I hear a chuckle or a forced pause - as if the reader is stopping to think, when you know full well they're not - it always jumps out at me: ACTING! Otherwise this was very helpful.
