    Very helpful video! But how am I supposed to get to the auditions without paying the 499 fee? Isn't it a bit insane to charge a service fee for every gig PLUS an annual fee???

    • @jaymyersvoiceover
      @jaymyersvoiceover วันที่ผ่านมา

      Depends on perspective. You won’t get auditions without the $500 fee. At first I considered it practical experience that has the potential to pay out. Taking a 3hr class in VO can run $300 after all. The 20% for some is a dealbreaker. However, I just account for that in my fees so my compensation is the same, and I’m off the hook for contract negotiations/details-which can take a lot of time and effort.

    Exceptioonal video! Thank you ! I tried the U87, the AEA R84 DVJ and the Senn 416. The issue I had with the Neumann and AEA was that they are designed in such a way to make the voice sound deep, round and warm which is my normal voice. So with auditions, if not reviewed on studio monitors or professional headphones my voice was too soft. I trained with Marc Graue in LA and his studio almost exclusively uses 416's. So I am back to the 416.

    My God, this is IT! I've been on a voiceover journey for the past 4-5 years, and only recently got my natural voice to settle into that "speaking voice" pocket after weeks of training. The concept of breath flow, support, and usage has always been... elusive, thanks to the amount of conflicting information on the internet. This video came at a perfect time and helps me demystify that bubble of singing-acting-public speaking. Thanks so much, and I'd love more videos like this! P.S. It is insane how overlooked the technique of proper breathing and mic technique is in comparison to other aspects of voiceover

    When you mentioned using a laptop rather than desktop, it can't put out as much power were you referring to plugging directly into it or does this mean that If I am using a usb audio interface that it will draw less power also?

    • @jaymyersvoiceover
      @jaymyersvoiceover 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Good clarification! It's not about the overall power output of a device, but rather the amplifier's capacity--whether it's a laptop's internal headphone jack or in an audio interface. One way to think of it is if I plug an industrial lightbulb intended for spotlights or something (say 6000w) into a desk lamp, the desk lamp will still give power to the bulb, but it doesn't have the components to bring the bulb to its full intended brightness. Whereas with a 60w bulb, the desk lamp will do just fine. In either case the amount of power flowing in/out of the lamp is the same. Hopefully that helps!

      Great question. Your demos and how you categorize/label them are how V123 and clients decide what to send you. For example, if I have a demo for an audiobook the system will send me auditions for audiobooks. In other words, the demos help people find you for auditions.

    I cannot tell you how helpful just this short video was for me. I have been struggling mightily lately with breath control in my voiceover work, one significant reason for this is that I suffer from seasonal asthma and regardless of any therapies or medication's it can get really challenging For me when recording so I have been doing a deep dive into looking for solutions to work around my shortness of breath. Also I have never actually managed my breath correctly and will often be very intimidated by long paragraphs and I'm just concentrating I'm trying to get to the end of the paragraph almost spitting out the last few words before I run completely out of breath. 2:49 CORRECTION: The diaphragm contracts on the inhale, and relaxes on the exhale! (I crossed my wires when thinking about the use of tension/force in my explanation, and flipped the process. Thanks to Paula for pointing this mistake out!)

  • @pbedr589
    @pbedr589 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Hi Jay, as a Voice Coach, I'm totally with you on flow over effort and focusing on the communication and the person I'm telling the story to ❤ I got confused over your explanation of the breathing process though, because by all I know, the diaphragm is active (muscular contraction) during inhalation and passive during exhalation. In contracting, it flattens and pushes down, so the lungs follow + expand and the organs of the belly that lay underneath get pushed down and forward a bit, while on relaxing, it moves upward. If you learned it the other way round, may I ask for a source, please? If there is controversy around this I'd like to read up on it. Still, the image of air falling in is a great tool, I like to use it as well. Sometimes images don't need to be anatomically correct to be powerful. And the effortlessness of just letting air fall in can bring us back to more natural, autonomous breathing. I hope it's ok to comment this. I can see from the comments that this is helping people, and I don't want to diminish your effort and knowledge. Best Paula

    • @jaymyersvoiceover
      @jaymyersvoiceover 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi Paula! Thanks for the note! And OF COURSE it’s okay to comment this! Yes, your explanation/breakdown sounds right to me, and I think because the function I was addressing was a misuse/misunderstanding of effort and tension in how we breathe, particularly how folks say “use the diaphragm” with regards to projection/speaking/yelling/etc., I more than likely got my wires crossed or explained things backwards. So thanks for pointing that out!

    Hi Jay, Very much enjoying your videos! I’m trying to figure out whether I can do my own audiobook (as the author of said book), so I’m learning a lot from these feedback videos and want to thank you for sharing your expertise. Also, loved what you said about the pauses. It makes it so atmospheric. I’m curious to know more about when you’d use that sort of stillness and when things should maybe speed up. For sure it would depend on the scene, but how do you as an artist decide? And does that differ when you’re reading something in 3rd person vs when you’re reading in 1st person? Also would love to join a discord if one becomes available 😊

      Glad to have you here! Congrats on the book!! Discord is linked above ;) Regarding pauses/speeding up, I wouldn’t say either would be affected by POV (3rd vs 1st). As far as how I decide, it’s somewhat dictated by the text and how one wants to treat it. One way to imagine it is the author writes it a certain way, and the audiobook narrator is adapting the book into another medium like a film director. So it’s kind of a combination of listening to the story and taking cues from my own emotional reactions to the story as I go. I sense I’m getting a bit esoteric, but does that kinda make sense? Let me know.

    • @LouPoletti1
      @LouPoletti1 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @ Thanks so much ☺️ That makes sense. I guess what the characters are doing and feeling would dictate a lot. Would you also say experience plays a role in sort of knowing where to take things? Or is it more of a gut feeling?

    • @jaymyersvoiceover
      @jaymyersvoiceover 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      A bit of both. Gut counts for a lot, but experience/training helps to guide and sculpt instincts with intention.

    Hi Jay, I just discovered your channel last night (Saturday, November 9, 2024). I'm trying to get started in voice-over and am struggling with how to process my voice. I discovered your channel while I was looking for more technical information on equalization and specifically how to use the parametric equalizer properly and effectively. I'll check out your offerings below. I hail from Boonville, Indiana. 😊

Going forward, I'll do my best to keep it free and open to everyone (that's the whole reason this channel exists in the first place), but depending on the level of interest and my ability to manage it by myself I may need to make the server or portions of it members only.

    Much respect for your approach and content, Thank You! Did Jenny provide you audio of her "normal" speaking voice? While listening, occurred to me there are people who have been afflicted with situations that cause them to speak in such fashion. (Just thinking out loud to myself here) and I could be totally out in left field. Apologies if so. Keep up the awesome job!

      No she didn’t, but she did say she was using a deep gravelly voice so I inferred it was an aesthetic choice for the material. Excellent point regardless!

    i have re20's and re320's....have not used the ethos or sm7b. I have recently picked up a roswell mini k87 and I would hands down buy the roswell mini k87 if I am spending $400-$500 dollars! and you can even do some fun mods like colors of mic body, color of grille and sounds soooooooo good!

    Hey Jay, unrelated question....I'm working on my fourth audio book. Have done it differently every time. I'm curious how you organize your file. One long track with all chapters there, one take lane per chapter, alternate (and appropriately named) file versions? What have you found that works best. THANKS ! I love that Earthworks ! RE-20s and SM7bs are certainly ICONs though. The RE-20 sounds like a broadcast, the ETHOS is more intimate. Thanks for the assistance and the great videos !

    Hi Jay, so I usually spend about an hour each TH-cam video I make manually hunting out clicks and other sloshy mouth noises. A friend of mine with RX ran ''mouth de-click'' over a sample I gave him and it did in 3 seconds what takes me an hour usually, so I'm tempted to spend $700 New Zealand dollars on it. I just want to be sure that its fine to do an entire recording without being destructive the way some regular d-clicks can be, could you recommend using it on an entire recording?

    D A B C is my preference in order. D gives more warmth - perfect for an audio book. A could be a good VO mic - B and C had nice high end but would be better for a "Buy NOW" kind of mic. I thought I'd say the RE20 because I own an EV PL80 which I used at the start. I've heard it has a similar frequency curve to the RE20. After hearing others, I'm thinking if I was to replace my NT1(gen3), I'd also consider a Lauten Clarion as well. But the Earthworks Ethos sounds the best in this comparison, IMHO.
