Tips, tricks, and tutorials for voiceover artists and audiobook narrators at any stage in their career.
When I was starting out, and at many points in my career, I spent far too much time, money, and/or stress just trying to figure things out on my own and then wondering if I was on the right track. So here are all of the things I wish I had known sooner, some of my brilliant ideas, my spectacular failures, and everything in between. With any luck, they'll help you out in some small way.
In case you're curious, here's a bit about who I am:
I'm a professional voice-over artist, audiobook narrator, and actor with over 15 years under my belt, six Best Performance of the Year nominations, and quite a bit of training (NYU, MFA Acting). I've also worked with some pretty cool companies, clients, and collaborators like BMW, Netflix, Microsoft, IBM, Samsung, McDonald's, Ragù, Spotify, The Economist, The Wall Street Journal, Audible, Penguin Random House, and Bayer, among many more.

The microphone B is the best ❤
Your “that’s not a lady!” made me laugh so hard. I just found your channel and am loving the tips you give.
haha ;)
Thank you so much for making this video. I finally understand EQ, thanks to you!! Fantastic explanation! 😀
Hey Mr jay you still got screaming and shouting from the diaphragm on the list ?
I do indeed. ;)
cope
One more question Jay 😂. Might be a stupid one. Do you ever find that your monitor produces unwanted sound reflections? As the sound waves can technically bounce off the monitor? Or am I being over cautious?
It’s definitely possible it could, but if the rest of your space is reasonably well treated it shouldn’t be a big factor. If you’re worried you can angle the monitor slightly so it’s not parallel to the walls of your space
Thanks jay.
How are you eq’ing that sm7b on this vid it’s so clear. No way that only a bass roll off 😅
Just clearing some mud in the lows by 1-3db. Pretty space voice specific but: cuts at 184hz, 380, 580.
@ no high shelf?
@ Nope.
@ you’re a great help thank you jay🙏🏾
Excellent lessons. I've applied these to my author career and am learning to apply them in my audiobook narration.
Thanks for sharing your wisdom Jay!
🫡😊
How to do Character Voices? Do you have any videos on how to get get started?
I do have a few. Check em out and let me know if you’re still left with questions 😊
Only perfect exists
You know what I mean ;)
@jaymyersvoiceover :)
I am going to buy both for different applications as you've stated in this video (narration, commercial). Im also going to pick up the Audient iD24 audio interface for its superior preamps but I am also looking at the Solid State Logic SSL 2+ audio interface. The noise floor in both audio interfaces is excellent.
Great choices, those are both fantastic interfaces!
Thanks for sharing. Words to live by. To be read aloud.😄😄😄
Wise words!!! thank you Jay
Thanks mate! 😊
Thanks, Jay. After a 35 year career in stage management I can vouch for everything you've shared here. Onward!!!
Rock on! ;)
Thanks Jay, great video and so true and useful. Many if not all of those points hit home and really are main problems for me.
Glad it resonated! :)
Spoken like a "brother from another mother" mate, thanks for sharing this.
Thanks mate!
Thank you Jay, super useful!
Glad it was helpful!
That’s awesome! Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I’m wondering why one would use a 416 when it’s meant primarily for exteriors, while we could use instead, say a schoeps cmc641 or an mkh50, hyper cardiods which are meant to be used on interiors and are not subjected to phasing. The cmc is also tiny, especially the cmc141! Thank you :)
Great question. Don’t quote me on this, but my understanding of the 416 is initially it was used by studios for ADR in film/tv since it was the same mic used on location, they’d get a better match in studio later. Once they started doing that people thought, “this sounds pretty good actually” and started using it in VO as a standalone. Now it’s more or less an industry standard for VO particularly in home studios owing to its great noise rejection and cleaner sound in less than ideal spaces. So while other mics might serve just as well with hypercardioid patterns, owing to it being a standard lots of folks simply go for the 416.
@@jaymyersvoiceover Yup, that just makes a lot of sense. So in theory an mkh50, 8060 or the schoeps cmc641/141 might sound even better! Something to try out, it would be cool to see a video comparison btw the 416 and a tiny schoeps cmc141! Could be the ultimate travel solution!
needed to hear this now, especially #1. do you have a mental frame or trick that helps you get psyched about a project that doesn’t exactly inspire your enthusiasm?
Great question, and honestly fake it till you make it has worked for me sometimes. I’ll go comically large/enthusiastic for something and after a few minutes of looking/sounding like an idiot I’ll have rallied somewhat with genuine enthusiasm.
@ priceless advice! thnx 🙃
Wow … ran out of Like buttons to click after the 1st lesson. Thank you JM & Happy Holidays!!!
Haha thanks! Happy holidays right back to ya
Thank you so much Jay, I really needed that encouragement!
Glad it helped!
Absolutely loved this advice. Just what I needed to hear. I heard a while back the expression: "Launch and 80 percent." Essentially the same advice as your "Try before you're ready." If you overthink something, you just get Paralysis by Analysis, and then... you'll never make a move. Prepare within reason. And then... just go for it. Also, regarding "Failures = Opportunities" I heard Tony Robbins say "When we Succeed, We Party. When We Fail, We Ponder." (A personal favorite). I mean Heck, Arnold Schearzenneger's entire life philosophy is learning and growing from failure. Thanks Jay. And Happy Holidays. 😊
What a wise and inspiring vídeo. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks! Glad you found it inspiring :)
Superb advice in vo.great buddy😅
Glad you enjoyed it!
Excellent words of wisdom buddy! Keep em coming!
Appreciate the kind words!
Great!
Thanks!
Awesome Jay! These are great lessons. Thanks for all you do for the VO community. 😊 I sent in an audition for Voice Over for the Planet - wasn’t able to secure a spot; however, I got some kind words from Kari and she’s keeping me in mind for the future. Extended my best wishes to her and am extending my best wishes to you for an amazing 2025!
Thanks for the well wishes! And maybe next time with VO4TP :) Thanks for submitting!!
This helps. Thanks!
These are great tips. You're highlighting and giving vocabulary to a lot of the things I do naturally. Helpful to think about them critically.
Glad it was helpful!
Dear Jay, firstly, thank you so much for your videos! I always get a little excited when I see you‘ve been uploading a new one. I am currently thinking about getting a Studiobricks One Plus and have been visiting a showroom to see how it feels in there. However, I noticed quite pronounced low frequency resonances when talking in there, even though it had a bass trap and full VO edition insulation. Did you find it improves when playing around with mic positioning a bit? Is it easy to EQ out? I‘m a little worried, as I found it to be rather unpleasant. When asking the guy if a second bass trap would help, he said probably not. Do you have any experience on improving sound quality, e. g. different bass traps, mic positioning, EQ etc.? Would really appreciate your advice! Thank you so much, best from Germany, Markus
Thanks for the kind words Markus! And great question with the Studiobricks. Yes, I’ve found some success using EQ to reduce unpleasant resonance in my booth. I’ve also found certain mics respond a bit better, and adding a bit more material into the corners (i had old acoustic blankets lying around that I tacked up) helped to mitigate some lower frequencies as well.
@@jaymyersvoiceoverthank you so much! I will definitely try putting some acoustic material in the corners.
I super strongly recommend emailing Earthworks and buying the Icon Pro windscreen. It screws right on to the Ethos, and allows for the brighter sound without requiring an external pop filter. Best $50 I’ve spent in a long time!
They sold you one? I wasn’t sure they offered those!
Hi Jay, do you know by chance the price of the One Plus standard? Thank you...
It depends on where you’re located. I’d ask the company directly for a quote. For NY though it was ~$13k when I was purchasing.
@@jaymyersvoiceover Im in Portugal, i guess near the headquarters of Soundbricks that i guess its in spain...But thank you for your answer...Maybe it will be at least 10K
First off, really appreciated your video and the information you gave. It covered a lot of what I was looking for. As someone who is starting out with VO, has a decent microphone (XLR Mic with interface), but also doesn't have the ability to treat my room do you think downloading a DAW with live noise floor reduction (Like Cakewalk or Tracktion Waveform) is necessary/helpful or recording on Audacity and then removing the noise in post is fine? I really don't want to pay for software's yet given I'm just starting out but I also want I give the best quality I can with what I have.
So glad it was helpful! Regarding noise reduction, the BEST way to improve your audio is going to be to treating your space. Noise reduction is helpful in a pinch but will largely be a waste of money if your space isn't well treated. That said you can treat a space or make a makeshift booth really cheaply. Some PVC pipe and a couple moving blankets will do wonders.
@ thanks for such a quick response! But what about the noise floor that comes from using an interface and so forth? That can’t be fixed with a treated room. I’ve seen suggestions on using active denoise plugins on some DAWs but i didnt know if it was necessary for auditions to have audio that clean.
@ For sure. It can help in that case, but in an untreated/poorly treated room the effect will be negligible relative to what treating your room would do. All to say, until you have a decently treated space, I wouldn’t worry about adding lots of plugins to improve the sound. Speaking from personal experience, invest in your space before buying a ton of software and you’ll get better results more cheaply and quickly.
@@jaymyersvoiceover awesome, genuinely thank you for such concise and quick responses!😁
@@ItzWindee For sure! Good luck :)
Thanks for your opon learning thankyou so much brother 😂
I also own U87ai and U89. The In fact the TLM193 have same capsule design as U89 with cardioid only and transformerless circuit. I mostly prefer the U89 as it works on more voices than U87ai. Other competitors to the Neumann from my locker would be the Gefell M930ts and Gefell M71s and cost half price.
Nice!
Ohh what. Tlm 193 sounds nice! Really preferred it over the u87.
Same
You don't use overall noise reduction, i.e., for ambient background noise? Also, at the end do you simply normalize to -3db ... for Audible, anyway? Do you ever do further processing after that, i.e., expander or EQ? Thanks so much for your tutorials.
Not much of at all. That’s why I invested in the fancy booth. For audiobooks, because there is a pretty strict standard for audio loudness I do a bit more than simply normalize. It’s a bit much to dive into via comment, but I’ve got other vids on that and will likely do a full walkthrough at some point.
Superb sir good job thank you
I practice my Standard American accent with your videos, as well as interviews of Kevin Conroy as my references!
Rock on! Hope it helps.
The comment about the wash was brilliant. I heard it but couldn’t language the experience. As always, thanks Jay!!
A & D
Nice!
Hello Jay! Questions: This is live(DSP) processing while you narrate in the booth? Then you again apply a mastering chain in the audiobook mastering stage? Thank you. (I can do that but I was avoiding it to get a dry recording for better "
Great question. Often I keep it very dry with live processing, only using that for minor quality of life improvements if I’m anticipating editing a project myself. This would be minor EQ and when using particular mics a bit of de-essing. The remainder I leave for post.
@jaymyersvoiceover thank you !
I’m British. And you do a British accent better than me. 😂
Haha 🤣
I can tell mic B is the tlm 103 i can immediately tell from the bright crisp top end and am listening on my laptop speakers
Nice!
This channel is going to BLOW UP! So glad I jumped on early! Good luck, Jay!
Would be happy to hear also the KM184 (or 185) in that booth. Very much underrated for this use. Would really like to hear it in your environment.
Nice! I’ll bear that in mind
This is one area where I, despite being relatively new to audiobook narration, have about 30 years experience, as I am a transgender woman. Two things I've found that help when a male narrator performs a female character is a slight softening of the voice, which Wesley does in this clip, and more vocal range. Guys tend to speak a bit more monotone than women. Women use more of a range in pitch. You don't need to go full Monty Python falsetto. Just a little softer and a little more range. Still, as Jay points out, the biggest thing is to embody the character's personality, their attitude, and their mood. James Marsters does this beautifully in his narration of female characters in the Dresden Files. It's a very subtle thing, but it's very clear when he's performing a female character like Mab, the Queen of Winter. Recently, I was listening to The Iron Queen (performed by the fabulous Khristine Hvam), at the end of which was a related short story performed by Josh Hurley. My jaw dropped by how well he performed the female characters. Just my two cents.
Thanks Dharma!
Thanks for this. Like your flow and style to explain really funny😅
Thanks so much for the detailed insight! Didn't strike me as a cop-out answer whatsoever. Super helpful!
