It is all about the inclinations and stars. Once you have your stars, using the right inclination potions from the guy by the rift stone at the encampment will give you the pawn you want to suit their vocation. That's it. It is getting all the stars that will drive you nuts. Griffins and Golden Knights are my bane, I have all the rest except seneschal which seems pointless anyway.
This made me want to redo my pawn as I had my pawn as warrior from 10-200 doing what I wanted it to do and then randomly said let's change classes and been acting goofy since then. I think now I'm willing to teach them debilitations and slowly introduce elements overtime. This I can comprehend surprisingly well now that I can see the AI learning process. Foot work was my downfall as I changed the inclinations after changing class and expected a miracle out of a ranger that was a warrior for so long. Now to put some hours in letting them fight for themselves and revert some bad changes.
In my opinion, Scather is actually for a big enemies. The reason why Challenger also tends to go after them, is the fact that many of them, are in fact a casters too. Pretty much all dragons can cast ranged/magical attacks. Chimera has a Goat caster. And (altho it's only a speculation), what might further engage a Challenger to keep attacking a Chimera (even after death of a Goat) are Lion's "Roar" and Snake's distance poison-spit. Living Armors are in general semi-magical beings and can cast a fire spell too. - Perhaps lack of that knowledge might initially let Challenger to ignore them in presence of other foes. One of a few boss-like enemies, which lacks on magic and range attacks are Ogres and Cyclops - altho the 2nd ones, tend to throw rocks time to time. The reason why Scather tends to climb enemies is mostly due to the lack of proper skills/tools they can use against them / their weak points. Bestiary knowledge seems to further encourages them for climbing, if the weak spot is above ground level... Perhaps that's why they sometimes climb even a Red Drakes. Using a single time command "GO" while Pawn engages in a combat (not when he returns to Player/Pawns) will almost always encourage it to climb. My Fighter pawn almost never climbs big enemies, at least not when he has agro of that (or any) foe. But whenever it happens in BBI; against duo drakes - I'm actually happy about that, because it gives enough distraction time for me, to deal with the 2nd one. The only enemy with which he never engages is Death (mostly keeping a distance). I would probably have to make some futher testings with that, but the potential reason for that behavior can be either; - Already acquired 2-star knowledge about Death; - the fact his AI still priorities weaker foes first (due to Mitigator inclination being first); - his current knowledge "tells him" he can't reach, nor climb its upper "body" part - which has lower resistance, unlike the bottom part.
I really hope they change the pawn system in the sequel. I only tried teaching a pawn on my first playtrough, but i quickly gave, didnt matter much since she was an op strider that destroyed everything with brain splitter and fracture dart anyway. Its worse than raising a child
I spent countless hours training my pawns on multiple platforms and on multiple accounts bestiary knowledge is a must for every pawn... but the inclination system is flawed and so frustrating even if you set correct inclinations on your pawn it will change overtime for some reason sometimes it will change depending how you play and sometimes it will change because you talked to some random npc it's crazy I know itsuno said it was designed to fail because if pawns did all the work players would be bored but damn it's still flawed system I hope they will have a better one in dd2 P.s. Best you can do is hire pawns with full bestiary and same inclinations as your pawn and always have inclination bottles on you in case of your pawn changes it again I noticed that pawns with same inclinations work well (most of the time)
There’s a reason pawns’ inclinations change over time and do not stay constant. First, there are timers that run in the background: one based on the pawns you hire, one called the MeP timer, and another called the Skill Use timer (although it doesn’t directly affect pawns’ skill use). The other factor are the enemies you encounter which raise Scather, Challenger, or Mitigator values. Ghost of Kirin wrote an interesting article on this almost 5 years ago-I’m currently modeling his results in my own series of videos. As far as “training” goes, one does NOT have to play a specific vocation ie play as a sorcerer in order to have an effective sorcerer pawn-it’s more “time in grade” that dictates how effective a pawn will be. The longer they play in a position the better they get at it-which is why when a player first swaps their pawn from say Fighter to Mage there can be some awkward moments. It comes with increase in bestiary, area, and quest knowledge, part of the AI learning system that makes the pawn system so unique about Dragon’s Dogma and different to other games where one can have Companions that perform a certain way.
You must be obsessed. How could you play grim dawn for that long. Awful ugly looking game. Character model looks like a blob with no discerning looks or any apeal.
So correct me if I'm wrong but when doing this cause you can't prevent your Pawn having higher level so to make it less annoying, don't equip dragonforged weapons only equip the weapon with a lowest possible damage to your pawn but equip them with the highest armor(obviously dragonforged armor) that their vocation can offer so they may survive and you revive them less often...
I've played the mod in the past, but no videos of it. I try to keep the videos vanilla as my viewers don't all have access to modding. And I didn't really like the mod. It's good on paper but nothing really changes. Just damage thresholds for 50% of the enemies become higher. Not harder, just forced to use better weapons
I know it's kind of late and Dragons Dogma 2 will come out soon but would it be feasible to mod dragons dogma to have a bigger map more quests like another gransys like city, a frigid mountain with dragons and stuff how much would that cost like a fundraiser and a few modders maybe take assets from the mmo and put em in there (ps I don't know how to code or even if that's possible but I'd pay for it to be real lol)
Sadly the game isn't very mod friendly, that's why there are not a lot of them out there. Modders will tend to gravitate toward games that offer them tools to help them. DD sits at the other end of the spectrum, no modding tool, and it's even complicated for the user because you have to do things like merging mods if you want to have several of them running in your game. And also the online component complicates things even more, because you don't want anything that alters pawns or their equipement if you want them to still work in online mode.
I know this comment is old, but yes, they do. It's actually the primary reason, aside from RC, to get your pawn hired/hire your own pawn on a separate account. If they do gain area/quest/bestiary knowledge, the game will let you know, which is why you shouldn't skip through the messages without reading them first.
I found that pure physical attacks do more good than elemental damage. But he is not immune to knockdowns, specifically blast arrows. Ricochet Hunter, Explosive Bolt/Volley have also have chances of knocking him down. For striders, skull crusher is another option. If you are very low level and are purely grinding for levels, the cheesy and fastest way of killing him is to survive his first encounter and move on to the bridge in Bitterblack, he will spawn over there. You equip blast arrows and well, blast him off the bridge and he dies to gravity.

I'm not sure if picking up a pawn will actually give them a hint. I highly doubt devs would create "so advanced" scripts, given only a few players would perform such actions in a first place - especially when they already climbing. Even if it works this way, there is also no guarantee that their "bad behaviors" won't return at some point; after switching vocation or inclination for example.
