Ancient Nord weapons seem to be an interesting nod to this: they're incredibly old, yet so well made that despite suffering so much time-oriented degradation they're still about as good quality as Tamriel's modern Steel weaponry. Nord Hero weapons seem to be the restored version of these, which reveal a weapon that's of competitive quality to Elven weapons but uses substantially cheaper and lower quality materials that showcase how superior the smithing process was. Skyforge Steel and current Nordic weapons seem to be the modern Tamriel equivalents to restored Ancient Nord weapons, all having the same damage output but express different cultural eras of the Nords. Supposedly (no confirmation), it's the Imperial-fication of most human cultures that caused traditional Nord equipment quality to lessen over time via Imperial standardization of its own style of mediocre (but overall cost-effectively cheap) gear, only being preserved by a select few upholders of the old forging traditions (Skyforge Steel) or backwater settlements who avoided Imperial standardization but still put their own spin on ancient Nordic equipment (Skaal with their Nordic gear). Traditional Nord smiths may make way better stuff, but usually at high costs that make gearing armies with that stuff impossible to do, hence why Imperial standardization ended up being more practical for large scale warfare purposes since that at least affords everyone with Steel quality equipment instead of having a bunch of poorer troops using a mess of random gear with a lot of garage iron in the mix.

I could see it being host for a really awesome shock enchantment for a paladin. I find these swords to be very underrated and so is the golden bow. Dawnbreaker, while not at all underrated, still doesn't get the fan love it deserves as a wonderfully designed fantasy sword to wield against the undead. The simple swinging animations look better with an axe too, swords always seem to make any character look like they're using one for the first time in their life, but with an axe the simple swinging side to side just looks normal.
The reason throughout history there have been very few serrated swords is because the serrations catch on bones make it difficult to remove from a fallen enemy, which is a disadvantage in an all out battel
I find it funny that he kept talking about how cool it is to have Gladius style swords on the list while completely excluding the actual Gladius in the game from said list (The Gladius is from the same creation as the Storm-Bear sword)
Nightingale Sword is my favorite. Totally utilitarian, especially for a thief. In any other sword the crossguard is a bit small, but we're talking about the weapon of a character who is by definition a sneaky sort. It's the closest thing to a concealed sword. It has color to it, and personally I think it beats out the Dawnbreaker because if you're a thief sneaking into a building or a tomb you really don't want a super glowie blade. Elegant, but on the down low...good for just awesome and it fits the Nightingale armor set perfectly. (Now if we could only get Shadowmere without joining Murder, Inc., we could totally rock the Zorro vibe.)
I always thought Miraak’s sword was originally a dragon fang that he had forged into a sword, and was later corrupted during his time with Hermaeus Mora, making it what it is now
You forgot a few Swords (mainly from the Creation club). Trueflame, Hopesfire, and the Ebony Scimitars from Ghosts of the Tribunal are all dope curved swords. Goldbrand is just a Golden Katana. Dawn/Duskfang and Bloodthirst are a duo of Tsaesci blades (very unique designs) brought over from Akavir. The Remnant Scimitar is a much better looking scimitar than the Vanilla game's. Boneshaver and Cyrus's Sabre are very unique Redguard blades (one the weapon of a previous protagonist). The Fishing Creation's Fishing Rods are classified as the Game's engine and serve the same purpose outside of actually fishing (though they kinda suck as weapons XD). Torment is a badass looking Daedric Longsword (TES Oblivion weapon type) that we obtain in the Deadlands (Dagon's realm, basically Hell) after killing the Dremora wielding it. And 2 Swords that are LITERALLY JUST GLADIUS SWORDS: The Grand Champion's Sword from the Bittercup creation, and Dragon's Oath the imperial counterpart to the Storm-Bear Sword. The fact that you included the Storm-Bear sword, but didn't include Dragon's Oath, and then bitched about there not being a Gladius is just asinine. Also Ice Enchantments suck in Skyrim, as all Nords, Draugr, Vampires, and half of all Dragons have a 50% resistance to it! Meanwhile far fewer enemies resist Fire, which is the enchantment on Dragon's Oath.
My theory on the ancient nord weapons having all that un-necessary design and decoration is because they were left in the tombs for the fallen rather than for use in battle and an ancient nord going into battle would more likely have a steel weapon, especially with the reputation of the skyforge steel. The other ancient nord weapons from nord heros are probably ceremonial in nature even if they go into battle so they are decorated but also functional even if plain steel would be better in practicality.
@@f.b.l.9813Daedric and Ebony were the op weapons in Morrowind. Especially when well enchanted, same for armor. I miss the Morrowind equipping system. Have 4 op rings on, amulet, waistband, clothing and then your enchanted armor lol. Surprisingly you can be op and still die easily if not careful. Lol.
I always thought that the elven weapon models should have looked like the ebony weapons keeping their original color schemes and ebony as elven. Also I alway kind of scratched my head at orcish stuff....they are renowned for their smithing skills yet all their stuff looks like it was pulled out of a mad max movie
Yeah tier list videos are bad, even worse when the creator knows nothing about the subject matter and misses the majority of the actual items he's discussing.
Woah woah woah, falmer sitting at 29 is CRIMINAL. Its one of my favorite base designs in the game, only sitting behind the blades sword and the wooden shiv. It looks kinda like they made it outta the sharp claw like legs of the chaurus they raise and has okay damage for what it is. I like enchanting mine with paralysis and magicka absorb bc i play a spell blade type of character. I also love the actualy ancient falmer set aswell and basically beeline thru dawgaurd just for that alone
you cant go wrong with dawnbreaker no matter the playstyle of each playthrough. the fact that its not leveled and you can basically get this masterpiece of a design by level 12, also puts it on top of my favorites swords too !
@@AwareWolfOnWheels Because ever since I found 2 Daedric Katanas in Morrowind and dual wielded them, all my characters throughout the series have been a dual wielding tanks.
The problem with Dawnbreaker is that if you have Serana as your follower(since she is the follower with the highest level cap) then the explosion from killing undead also affects her due to her being a vampire and after 3 or 4 of them she turns hostile.
It's so validating to hear someone voice the thoughts I've always had. On a side note, I hope the Ice Blade of the Monarch ranks #1 on the Greatswords ranking.
Can't wait to see your opinions on the Battleaxes. Personally, I'm a fan of the Iron and Dragonbone Battleaxes, as well as the IDEA/concept of the Nord Hero/Ancient Nord BA. Thicker blades on the Nord ones would make me like them more
Better-shaped weapons is a staple in my mod list along with better shaped bows of the heavens before these mods, I had no idea how paddle-like and huge all the weapons were. The better-shaped weapons have a great look for ancient Nord weapons based on Viking and Celtic cultures, making it one of my go to blades when I use swords.
Ebony blade, 2h katana that drains health and gets stronger by deceitful acts (murder friends) and never runs out of charge (which i dont entirely understand because it never "gets dull" so how did it lose its power in the first place? Yeah, i get that it hasnt been used in a while. If you power it up and stick it in a trunk, when you pull it out later, still charged. Not complaining, just an observation.
In regard to the forsworn blade, you should look into shark tooth swords. They actually were very effective, and when a tooth broke off it could easily be replaced to keep the weapon in top shape
4:00 just because something is ancient doesn’t mean it has to be primitive. Like I genuinely don’t know what you’re wanting; do you want it to be two sticks and rock? Just because it’s primitive? In 2000 years when humans come back to earth and see our weapons, do you think they’ll be expecting obsidian flint arrowheads?
I can see the argument for why the steel sword isn’t all that impressive but in my opinion it’s an amazing sword that is simple and beautiful. When I start a playthrough in Skyrim I don’t progress out of riverwood without full steel armor, sword, shield and dagger cuz I think the iron armor and weapons suck. Both in design and aesthetics. After I kill my first dragon I continue to improve smithing to the point of dwarven smithing and forging a crap ton of dwarven bows based on the experience they grant and go until I have the advanced armor perk to forge steel plate armor or Nordic carved and weapons. The Nordic carved weapons and armor are my favorites easily cuz of design, the flourishes and more. I don’t care I am usually a sword and shield user I would easily craft all the Nordic carved weapons for display in a home. Dawnbreaker is awesome and all but hearing meridia over and over every playthrough is annoying. Though in the dawnguard dlc, using it and auriel’s bow against vampires and Harkon is just flavor win right there lol. Dragonbane is an awesome dragon slayer sword, I just wish it didn’t have be a blades sword. I think the glass sword while beautiful is just a dumb idea in my opinion. If I wanted glass for a weapon, I’ll use volcanic glass lol. Obsidian is just better. Daedric sword is gnarly for obvious reasons but the fact that there is no added bonus damage cuz of the serrated edge hurts it. Dragonbone is just pure epicness mixed with utility as a weapon. It’s perfect. I just love hearing random guards ask how they can procure weapons and armor made of dragon bones and scales lol. The ebony sword is one I gladly skip and choose the ebony ax over cuz the sword is just ugly. Orcish sword is cool just not impressive to me. Elven, while elegant, is more of a display piece than a weapon for battle.
Probably a weird request, but I’d be interested in a video about what you think the popular mod Leanwolfs better weapons SE does for them. It fixes a lot of the issues you bring up in your videos (except falmer and forsworn weapons, those are doomed)

(The Gladius is from the same creation as the Storm-Bear sword)
….you remembered the nord hero sword…….im so proud of you….
I see you're rating it on looks, not stats. Interesting. I'm glad you're having fun with your channel. 10/10
That was my favorite part about the dawn breaker that it would glow when undead were near, so I’d know if im in for a fight
@@WalterWild-uu1td it’s truly a beautiful deadly piece of art
I thought the wooden sword was just a gift you get for your kids.
Everyone hates meridias but dawnbreaker is a great reward it was definitely my number 1 b4 starting this video.
Its an awesome sword
Dawn breaker is cool. It's just annoying hearing "ANOTHER HAND TOUCHES THE BEACON" every playthrough
The Ebony sword just looks like a hunk of metal that someone sharpened one end of, to me.
The hottest take of the video is going after the Falmer for visual aesthetic
Imagine spouting at forsworn "your swords are uglier than falmer!"
I always thought Miraak’s sword was originally a dragon fang that he had forged into a sword, and was later corrupted during his time with Hermaeus Mora, making it what it is now
Cool theory! It looks like a similar shape
Great video, can't wait to see the 2-handed sword video. 😎
More puns than seconds of footage in the first minute. Instantly subscribed.
MITTENSQUAD is the first thing that comes to my mind when this video came on my feed after years of not playing this game...
Bro forgot 45% of swords, this man has mid skyrim knowledge at best.
These are so fun to watch!
Looking forward to the Two-Handed Swords video
My theory on the ancient nord weapons having all that un-necessary design and decoration is because they were left in the tombs for the fallen rather than for use in battle and an ancient nord going into battle would more likely have a steel weapon, especially with the reputation of the skyforge steel. The other ancient nord weapons from nord heros are probably ceremonial in nature even if they go into battle so they are decorated but also functional even if plain steel would be better in practicality.
That's it buddy.
A NEW HAND TOUCHES THE BEACON...
The irony of a holy paladin using a daedric weapon is palatable.
Do you mean… paladinble? (I’m so sorry)
maybe the Aedra should get off their aetherial asses and make some aedric weapons for the dragonborn then!
I have never not been enraged by one of these videos
It's either the sheer ignorance or just bad takes.
Yeah tier list videos are bad, even worse when the creator knows nothing about the subject matter and misses the majority of the actual items he's discussing.
Ik the daedric sword looks so good and he just hates on it yet somehow likes the darven sword
@@AwareWolfOnWheelsit’s a ranking, it’s gonna be subjective based on HIS own opinions🤓🤓🤓🤓
@@naf8787 shit tier comment on shit tier content
Oooohh... I did not expect this to be just a visuals tier list.
That intro script deals psychic damage with all the puns. I thought this was a sword video not a mage one
You forgot dawn/duskfang
I always forget something...
He literally forgot half of the swords...
Fair points!
Greatsword are my favorite weapon class in every fantasy game I play, plus you please rank those next?
There is a paladin weapon spell mod that allows you to conjure a holy sun version of the silver sword.
The sword puns alone earn you my like 👍
Before I'm even a minute in and I'm booing and hissing at all the puns
Its what I do
Just for that intro, here's a like, comment, and sub.
you cant go wrong with dawnbreaker no matter the playstyle of each playthrough. the fact that its not leveled and you can basically get this masterpiece of a design by level 12, also puts it on top of my favorites swords too !
Glad to see you're transparent in the bias for glass weapons :)
The nord hero greatsword is my favorite in how it looks, I hope you rank that one high in your video about greatswords
The Dawnbreaker mission glitched for me during the boss fight and I ended up being able to pick up 2 swords. I now dual wield dual Dawnbreakers 😁
Dual wield is the lowest form of combat in skyrim, why would you do that to yourself?
@@AwareWolfOnWheels Because ever since I found 2 Daedric Katanas in Morrowind and dual wielded them, all my characters throughout the series have been a dual wielding tanks.
Shocking how much you seem to love a good gladius but then include the stormbear sword without its counterpart the imperial dragon sword.
Hope you do a shield ranking video soon. As historical shield nerd, I've got some very... extreme opinions about the imperial shield's handle.
Today is when I learned that there was Amber equipment in this game
Its a Creation Club addition, Saints & Seducers pack
The problem with Dawnbreaker is that if you have Serana as your follower(since she is the follower with the highest level cap) then the explosion from killing undead also affects her due to her being a vampire and after 3 or 4 of them she turns hostile.
I was hoping to see the Jyggalag’s Sword, I love the design even though is not that fancy but it stands above average, love the video by the way
Two handed vid most likely
It's so validating to hear someone voice the thoughts I've always had. On a side note, I hope the Ice Blade of the Monarch ranks #1 on the Greatswords ranking.
He has returned
You forgot the creation club grand champion sword, its an awesome gladius
I love the aincient nord gear, especially the hero sword.
It’s crazy how much has been added since the days of the 360 version when I first played Skyrim
thers no f way u rank the Mirak sword less then woode toy sword
Miraak sword fugly
Fact's I remember loving it on my first playthrough years ago.
I'd do it again
Can't wait to see your opinions on the Battleaxes. Personally, I'm a fan of the Iron and Dragonbone Battleaxes, as well as the IDEA/concept of the Nord Hero/Ancient Nord BA. Thicker blades on the Nord ones would make me like them more
8:31 I actually think the ebony sword should be lower on the list that thing is awful looking same with the great sword
The ebony war axe is sexy tho
@ yeah I agree that other ebony weaons are nice just not the sword and greatsword
OMG how long does it take to write your scripts with all those PUNS! lol Good job on the video and thanks for posting it.
Longer than I'd like to admit :P
Ebony blade, 2h katana that drains health and gets stronger by deceitful acts (murder friends) and never runs out of charge (which i dont entirely understand because it never "gets dull" so how did it lose its power in the first place? Yeah, i get that it hasnt been used in a while. If you power it up and stick it in a trunk, when you pull it out later, still charged. Not complaining, just an observation.
I haven't used the Amber sword that much in Skyrim but I absolutely love the weapon and Oblivion
I'm not aware of that one, I'll check it out thanks!
Windshear: ok so me not being in this gives me an understanding that this is worst to best based on style
