We are severely lacking when it comes to reviews on monitors. Especially monitors that aren't top of the line. Really been liking the budget monitor stuff on the channel lately.
There's a TH-cam channel called PC Monitors that does really in-depth reviews exclusively on monitors. He does a really good job on all his reviews, and is really responsive to comments since his channel is small. Check him out.

I think it's actually for demo mode to show "other guys" vs "this monitor" kinda stuff. I owned an AOC a while back and remember something like that being in the manual
My immediate thought is that it was an assistive technology - you'd place it over an area of the screen, then drag some text into that area to make it easier to read, or something.

Keep an eye out for the used stuff on Amazon. I just got a 144hz 1440p 27" Benq for $342 including tax. It came with a warranty but was missing the remote tho. Not super budget but pretty good value.
@@Naruto-pr9xu not sure where you’re from, but most Walmart locations, and their website usually have in stock an LG 24” 144hz, 1ms 1080p monitor that even though it is tn, has a seriously good viewing and color range with no ghosting because of the low response time. They’re retail price is 159, but the regularly go on sale for 140. I’ve had mine for a year now, and the bang for buck is phenomenal. Only want a 27” for iracing, other than that, the 24 is solid. 5:27 The washed out brightened section is for a minimap or something like this. When you've got dark image in game it can be nice to have some ui sections brightened up a notch. Fairly useless, but hey
I have an older AOC monitor in my work and it has this feature, and to be honest its nothing special, not a gaming monitor or high refresh rate etc, it even runs VGA standard
@@mikeoxmaul577 I'm not sure what it goes for currently, but my model is AG241QX. I'm not sure if the one in the video actually came with it, but mine came with a usb remote for the monitor so you don't have to use the buttons on the actual monitor to make screen adjustments
i have a 240hz 1080p aoc monitor my self and linus just didn't turn the setting up all the way......... if he placed it on 100% then the whole screen became brighter ultimately removing ghosting by a LOT! and not just the corner...
The Bright Frame Corner can be used to improve the over all image quality by giving secondary contrast controls thus getting dark colors or better over all screen image if you lower the contrast to the standard stuff and double down on it or such and making the frame 100 percent of the screen rather then 50 percent and so on.
Having been someone who used IPS monitors for years, I was apprehensive at first about VA panels. Then i Found the AOC CQ32G1 on sale for $299 and decided to try it out. 32 inch curved 1440p monitor at 144 hz and 114% sRGB for $299? Sign me up! Initial impressions out of the box were that the build quality was fairly solid, and I/O was perfectly fine. The picture initially at default is kind of whack though. After doing some research, and trying some color profiles online, it still just wasn't impressing me. The brightness was just so low, and the colors weren't really breathing Well once I got this monitor mounted, it's like a night and day difference for brightness! Turns out if you mount these panels above eye level (about 10-15 degrees) the perceived brightness is much much better than at eye level. This seems to be true of all VA panels (I went to my local Micro center and kneeled in front of all the display panels to test it out) This little discovery prevented me from returning it, and went back home to continue tuning. Then I decided to sit for hours setting this monitor next to my IPS panels one by one, going through scene by scene, and tuning the settings to look as similar to my eyes as possible. I don't have a color calibration tool (used an old friends' tool for all my IPS panels), so this was the only way I could think of to get it calibrated. The RGB levels are SUPER sensitive, so it took a long time to get it tuned in. Below are the settings I used (YMMV greatly as there can be variances between each monitor, use as a jump off point then adjust to your needs): Contrast 52 Brightness 80 Gamma- Gamma 3 Red- 41 Green-48 Blue-46 Game mode- Off Free sync- On Game Color- 10 This monitor is now a complete night and day difference in color, clarity, and brightness compared to out of the box. It is still no replacement for an IPS panel if you are doing professional editing, but as a general purpose/gaming monitor it is one of the best values out there. The only gripe I have is that it still feels slightly warm after "calibration", but its not at all bothersome. I use this monitor in a bright room with a bay window without any issues in brightness, and do get some glare but it's no more than any other monitor. Games are crisp and colors "pop" without being noticeably saturated. The response times are just about as good as any mid-high TN panel. It has no issues maintaining 144hz, and I haven't had a single moment yet where I feel I need to make an adjustment while playing a game. I definitely can't speak more highly of this monitor for those who are just looking for a high quality experience, lots of real estate, and a good value. From here on out for all non professional editing where color accuracy is a must, I'll be sticking to VA panel technology, and AOC has definitely made customer out of me for future considerations. (This long rant brought to you by skil- Just kidding :P)
@@sbc2954 no problems! I just wanted to let people know this info because the monitor really is a great value. I tried out 4 brands of VA monitors that weekend, and this is the one that stuck around (not to say the other panels were bad, this one just felt like the most natural fit in my setup). Hopefully some others who own AOC VA panels will chime in with their thoughts and settings too!
Huh, mine if very accurate out of the box. Only thing I changed was gamma to Gamma 3. That's it. Also, how can you have brightness set at 80? Did I get a much brighter version than you and Linus? I have brightness set to 40, and even that can get too bright during the evening. I use 60W bulbs in my room, so it's not like it's dim in here either.
Linus, please do a "best bang for your buck" on a handful of high refresh rate monitors. I think many of us are okay with spending a little extra to avoid the junk, but also can't really justify the price tag of the "cutting edge" that is often reviewed.
It would be very helpful for to have an affordable (not cheapest) monitor buying guide from LTT! It is such a pain to sort through all the cryptic model numbers and pros and cons when you are trying to find something decent and save money. With other hardware it is easier and less subjective, and I love how picky you guys are because I notice all that stuff too.
Definitely do more content of monitors in this market segment; as this is where most of your viewers shop. With the 5700XT and 2070S being able to push high refresh 1440p so well, I think it's ideal to find a display a tad cheaper than the graphics card.
Viotek. HW Unboxed has done great reviews on them, they beat displays twice their price. Like, legitimately. In contrast, response times vs other VAs etc
He should do proper REVIEWS in the budget category, but no one at the office probably wants to write reviews on lesser products (/ no manufacturer wants to send entry level samples) instead of 1500$ all bells and whistles cutting edge technology. The sad thing is that the actual usefulness of a review about the new 2000$ gaming hardware probably concern about 1% of his audience, very wealthy viewers. Less rich people too want to buy good stuff, and not those dirt cheap no name brands you feature on cheap "round ups" I'm talking about decent stuff that have good perf/$ and that most people will save for.
I'm almost sold on the 5700xt but waiting on either more news on the 5800 or for cyber monday before buying a new display. I'd LOVE more info on displays.
AOC monitors are legit some of the best I've had, the features to price ratio is honestly better than other more notable brands and their quality control is really good. They also make solid high quality products.
You play CS and it's 2019: the overly saturated colors and crazy contrast modes are used by vast majority of pro players - it simply makes the enemy models stand out more.
It's because it has had such a huge following for so long. They just use it as a baseline because "most" people can relate to what he sees and talks about when using it to review something. Also, most people don't play with settings like those that pro players use so it would not be beneficial to use those as a test. If he used PugG or Fortnite as a test I would have no clue how it translates because I don't play those and I know I'm not alone. So, they use a game that's been around forever that a wider range of players have likely played and can relate to.

Yeah i feel like they get a bit jaded on these things sometimes. If i wasnt trying to fit more stuff on my screen id probably still be at 720p today tbh

He didn't even test it correctly! He left CONTRAST at 50%. Everyone knows that these days "contrast" affects brightness even more than the "brightness" setting so why did he leave "contrast" at 50% when testing how bright it can get???

I think that feature might be for when you’re multitasking and would like a different setting on a specific tab. I can’t say I’d need it but it’s definitely an option
the default color profile is set to warm. that is why the image looks a bit dull and reddish. turn it to normal and its bright enough (PS. i have the same monitor and had the same first impression till I tweeked it)
@@Humiliated1234 I have this monitor and have absolutely no problems. Noticebly dark but you get used to it very, very fast and its easier on the eyes. Same with any motion blur.

Hey Linus, the feature is for streamers and youtubers for them to know where their facecam is so they wont move any important thing in that bright box.
The weird colors for the FPS mode are probably for game like CSGO where you don't really care for how good things look but rather maximum advantage in seeing your target.
I got a 400 dollar 4k monitor from AOC in 2016. Its been pretty great. I have no issues with the brightness or anything. I am sure its not the best monitor. But for the price it's been quite nice. A lot of thr stuff linus picks on in these reviews, is because he plays with new tech all the time. I had no idea my monitor was a cheaper brand, because it was a crazy nice upgrade to the one I had been using since 2006. I still have that one as a secondary monitor actually.
Could be for streamers with their facecam, if they have a dark room or the color is just off from the game, you can brighten the facecam without brightening the game as well.

Hmmmm, I own the same monitor and as much as I love Linus, this review doesn't give it much justice. Honestly, coming from a 60 Hz Benq, this AOC is golden.
So is it really a good gaming monitor if I am using a Nvidia graphics card ?? And it's 1440p is good ?? And there is no lag while play on 144 Hz was it just motion blur ? Or it doesn't worth it ?
Look, you dont have to believe these big youtube tech nerds. Just read the specs and if it matches or liking then get it. Plus, dont just watch Linus, watch other videos and they do a better job giving it a review than Linus. Talking about colors and brightness, everyone except Linus has managed to make it brighter. Anyways, my answer to you is yes, you should get it.

It’s pretty easy to see the difference in image quality for me. Lighting and colors make all of the difference, I guess some people don’t have an eye for it. Also it doesn’t necessarily mean you have to spend a lot more money just to get ideal image quality. There are a lot of very decent monitors for the same price as other ones that simply look dull.

You completely missed the MBR and "boost" mode of the Overdrive, to get the advertised "1ms" response time. You need to turn freesync off, and put the overdrive to "BOOST", or put medium/strong and adjust the MBR settings to your liking. However since you are so concerned with how "dark" it is, this will likely make it even worse for you Linus.
Yes! I got so annoyed when he talked about contrast being bad while in Game Mode. *facepalm* He later turned it off, but not while he was talking about contrast.

I don't know I could see the trials pretty easy in the video. It actually looked worse than on my Samsung HDTV when I play games on it and a whole lot darker as well.
Their market is not big in the US.. You can find the occasional reviews in different european languages. So they will not likely send out units to the USA. In general i think AOC knows that if they release a good product.. they do not need to invest much in marketing. A good deal will sell itself and will get picked up for a review anyway. As a customer you end up with a cheaper product, because eventually the customer also pays for the PR.

5:36 - My soul melted at this... save me! When it comes to monitor testing we need 2-4 monitors plugged in - one defined as the penultimate quality/control, others to compare with and the monitor being reviewed as us viewers can't see a lot.
Linus: it has swivel and height against I still remember when that was like a premium feature only cheap stuff it doesn’t have it on me looking at me monitors with no height againstment: Yep those days... cheap stuff...
My previous monitor had tilt, swivel, pivot and height adjustment. My new monitor has tilt and that's it. Fortunately the height is perfect, the stand is extremely stable and I can always just shuffle it around instead of having it swivel. And as for pivot, yea but no. I think it used it twice in ten years with my old monitor so I think I can manage. What this new monitor got is a decently fast IPS panel, FreeSync, 144Hz and a 2560 x 1440 resolution. I'm good with the fixed stand...

5:29 "What is this feature for?" I just purchased the AOC CQ27G2 and it has the exact same feature. IMHO the colors on this monitor are a little funky and the screen seems dark, but when you use this feature and turn the size up until it fills the entire monitor, it returns the colors and brightness to what I imagine as 'normal' on other game mode monitors.

I can relate to that, can't play more than an hour at 100% brightness on the 1080p version of this monitor without hurting my eyes and having a 50% chance of a migraine happening =')
@@PrimalLIQUID Its not bad. It seems bad to linus because he is used to super high end monitors. It is quite fine for normal gaming use. If you reduce brightness its quite easy on the eyes in the evenings and late night gaming.
Everyone is saying that the bright picture setting is only for corners is missing the opportunity to set it to scale over the whole screen and adjust the contrast up, makes this panel brighter and things pop more. Add some game color and tweak the rgb to your liking and you got a pretty good picture! Coming from a 7 year old 24 inch piece of trash, this thing was like heaven sent even with its flaws.
10:00 "VA panel" and "low contrast" are mutually exclusive unless it's really sucks or you configured it wrong :| 11:00 sRGB standard is 80 nits of brightness, I use my ~150-nit VA LCD at 50% and it's fine. 11:15 Sometimes monitors also limit brightness on certain profiles. Can we stop over-brighting everything instead of fixing low contrast and bad dark shades ?
No, VA panels generally have great contrast. In fact, except OLED, they're the best when it comes to contrast. Where did you learn that they don't have good contrast? This monitor has a contrast ratio of 3000:1 while TN and IPS generally hover around 1000:1 or even slightly below that. The problem is that Linus "reviewed" the monitor with Game Mode on, which is a mode that LIFTS shadows and makes the screen look washed out. It's for competitive use, not accuracy. If you care about accuracy, you obviously turn that off. I have no idea why he turned it on for this review. He later turns it off, but he doesn't correct himself about the contrast. The damage is already done, because everybody now thinks this monitor is dull as hell because of what he said when using Game Mode. It's like if I reviewed an Asus monitor, then complained about it having terrible contrast after I turned up the shadows. *facepalm*

man wth was he supposed to talk about? It's a monitor review. The blur is noticeable, it's 144Hz but the black-to-white is not good. It's QuadHD but with bad contrast and brightness. It may seem like it has a good feature set for the price, so he was obliged to tell the trade-offs that were made.

Ya I don't like burning my eyeballs out anyways. I actually think the bright one looked worse and that it was the washed out one. I will never understand why everyone is obsessed with burning their eyes out for no reason. Save your eyes and turn your brightness down it really doesn't look any worse at all LOL
I prefer turning brightness down lower too (for more natural richer colours), but in that game it makes sense that the Arabian sun should wash stuff out and be uncomfortably bright.
That weird box you can move that has it's own brightness etc, I guess thats for when you're split screening 2 programs and want one to have different settings to the other maybe a video on one side and a text document on the other. Beyond that I can't think of what you might use it for
if you're really expecting 1440p 144hz at prices below like 200$ then you're a fucking idiot anyway. Even the cheapest 1440p freesync 144hz monitors (aka no gsync tax) are usually over 300. Don't look for this kind of hardware if you're a broke ass bitch
Hopefully this comment helps someone in the market 3 years later. I have had BenQ, Dell and several AOC monitors and there really is no difference to me except the price. Good company and glad to use them!
Bingo. Not a lot understand this, and the power supply Is almost ALWAYS the first thing to go, probably for every electronic device that uses similar built in power supplies. I've repaired multiple monitors via replacing the capacitors from the built in power supply. It's probably the first thing to go in PCs as well. Never looked at the statistics so guessing.
You're right external power supplies are much better for the average user that wants to keep his monitor for a long time. But for someone who knows electronic basics it shouldn't matter. Fixed many power supplies by replacing the failed caps with top of the line japanese ones and they worked fine for many years. It is true that power supplies are usually the first thing that dies in anything that connects to mains power
@@georgewinchester6403 External brick power supplies dont go out anywhere near the same level internal does, most likely due to the contained heat. Heat is the silent killer of electronics.
Yup, I have a monitor that has extremely cheap capacitors in the built-in power supply and every once in a while a new capacitor will go and I'll have to replace it.
I have a 1440p 144Hz monitor, but my ancient GeForce 980 SLI setup can barely manage 1080p/60fps in modern games. So I get nearly zero benefit. I think that going above 1080p/60 is worth it, for sure, but you need a 1080Ti or better to really drive it. It takes a tremendous amount of GPU power to deliver 2K/4K at 144Hz.
@@somebody700 So I assuming based on your comment that it would have fixed Linus's complaint of it being too dark. I'm getting the 1440p one for christmas, so I want to understand how to configure it properly when I set it up.
@@somebody700 Yeah with an extra 300 dollars, I could upgrade my processor. If I was able to get a 600 dollar monitor, I definitely wouldn't have even been looking at this, but for the price this monitor seems fair enough.
I use a 21:9 AOC monitor that runs at 3440:1440, I've used it for about 2 years and it's still running like a dream! I just may have to check this one out as well since ive been looking to get into the 120hz+ range.
I can see the "bright square" feature being useful in FPS games that uses darkness as a "blend in" feature. The Square can be placed in the middle, at the crosshair, and with one click on the monitor, you have full vision at night, without going to software settings.
I have the 32 inch 2K version of this monitor and I think mine goes so high on the brightness that sometimes I can't look at it when it is above 50% brightness. Other than that for the motion blur (the trails), when set to Strong overdrive It clears it up, I enable it only when gaming. I think its a great monitor for the price
@@somebody700 yeah but still unnecesarry go for something more technic like the monitor itself is not that much more mid-ish 1440p, mid-ish 144hz performance, mid-ish color accuracy and somewhat acceptable frame response time and that's it, like the 96.69% ppl who are going to actually purchase the monitor based on this review, are fortnite and csgo kids with some extra money lmao
5:30 I wonder if that feature might be for enhancing the lighting of an area of a game's HUD. Perhaps it's to make it easier to view a corner where you have a frame counter or ammo counter or some such
Was going to say this same thing. I am almost certain it is for highlighting a HUD (in game or third party overlay for FPS/ CPU and or GPU usage and temps).
11:10 Am I the only one who thinks the darker image is better and the one Linus is saying is "really really better" is the kind of bright light that makes your eyes hurt after an hour of gaming?
I have the 1080p version of this monitor and I actually turned the brightness way down to one of the lowest settings. I find bright displays really hard on the eyes.
That Bright frame feature is for, Like if you have to split that monitor in to two sections (You need two monitors for working, but you only have one) to work with and you need different brightness to the other section, you could use that feature.

I actually have this monitor, the “blandness” isn’t too noticeable actually (probably going to over think it now you gave a side by side) I enjoy it a lot It took a solid 10min of configuring to get something that looked normal. Though once I did I’ve been running with it for about 3 months. No complaints.

How's the 32 inch version? I'm in the market for a larger screen soon, currently on a 27" 1440p qstar OC'd to 90hz. Have a 4k 50" TV as well, but the screen is secondary for simulators, not great for FPS.

@@Munky332 I have not used it yet, I quite literally ordered it a few hours before commenting on that video. So hopefully it reaches me before the weekend. I am coming from a 1080p 24 inch Asus 144hz monitor, no adaptive sync. Its a TN panel as well so I am looking at specs wise quite a massive upgrade. I think it's a VG248 but I'm not too sure. I am not too concerned about the brightness, I literally always am on my PC in a very dark setting and overall, coming from the monitor I am on now I feel like it should be quite an overall upgrade. If I'm satisfied with it, I will get two more and use it as a triple screen setup for my simrig and turn that into my full-time desk.
We used to carry at least 2 or 3 different models of AOC monitor at the Best Buy I worked at in Kansas. I even owned two of them over the years. I had no idea they weren't popular here.

My immediate thought is that it was an assistive technology - you'd place it over an area of the screen, then drag some text into that area to make it easier to read, or something.

Keep an eye out for the used stuff on Amazon. I just got a 144hz 1440p 27" Benq for $342 including tax. It came with a warranty but was missing the remote tho. Not super budget but pretty good value.
@@Naruto-pr9xu not sure where you’re from, but most Walmart locations, and their website usually have in stock an LG 24” 144hz, 1ms 1080p monitor that even though it is tn, has a seriously good viewing and color range with no ghosting because of the low response time. They’re retail price is 159, but the regularly go on sale for 140. I’ve had mine for a year now, and the bang for buck is phenomenal. Only want a 27” for iracing, other than that, the 24 is solid. Cheers!

i have a 240hz 1080p aoc monitor my self and linus just didn't turn the setting up all the way......... if he placed it on 100% then the whole screen became brighter ultimately removing ghosting by a LOT! and not just the corner...
The Bright Frame Corner can be used to improve the over all image quality by giving secondary contrast controls thus getting dark colors or better over all screen image if you lower the contrast to the standard stuff and double down on it or such and making the frame 100 percent of the screen rather then 50 percent and so on.
Having been someone who used IPS monitors for years, I was apprehensive at first about VA panels. Then i Found the AOC CQ32G1 on sale for $299 and decided to try it out. 32 inch curved 1440p monitor at 144 hz and 114% sRGB for $299? Sign me up!
Initial impressions out of the box were that the build quality was fairly solid, and I/O was perfectly fine. The picture initially at default is kind of whack though. After doing some research, and trying some color profiles online, it still just wasn't impressing me. The brightness was just so low, and the colors weren't really breathing
Well once I got this monitor mounted, it's like a night and day difference for brightness! Turns out if you mount these panels above eye level (about 10-15 degrees) the perceived brightness is much much better than at eye level. This seems to be true of all VA panels (I went to my local Micro center and kneeled in front of all the display panels to test it out) This little discovery prevented me from returning it, and went back home to continue tuning.
Then I decided to sit for hours setting this monitor next to my IPS panels one by one, going through scene by scene, and tuning the settings to look as similar to my eyes as possible. I don't have a color calibration tool (used an old friends' tool for all my IPS panels), so this was the only way I could think of to get it calibrated. The RGB levels are SUPER sensitive, so it took a long time to get it tuned in. Below are the settings I used (YMMV greatly as there can be variances between each monitor, use as a jump off point then adjust to your needs):
Contrast 52
Brightness 80
Gamma- Gamma 3
Red- 41
Green-48
Blue-46
Game mode- Off
Free sync- On
Game Color- 10
This monitor is now a complete night and day difference in color, clarity, and brightness compared to out of the box. It is still no replacement for an IPS panel if you are doing professional editing, but as a general purpose/gaming monitor it is one of the best values out there. The only gripe I have is that it still feels slightly warm after "calibration", but its not at all bothersome. I use this monitor in a bright room with a bay window without any issues in brightness, and do get some glare but it's no more than any other monitor. Games are crisp and colors "pop" without being noticeably saturated. The response times are just about as good as any mid-high TN panel. It has no issues maintaining 144hz, and I haven't had a single moment yet where I feel I need to make an adjustment while playing a game. I definitely can't speak more highly of this monitor for those who are just looking for a high quality experience, lots of real estate, and a good value.
From here on out for all non professional editing where color accuracy is a must, I'll be sticking to VA panel technology, and AOC has definitely made customer out of me for future considerations. (This long rant brought to you by skil- Just kidding :P)

@@sbc2954 no problems! I just wanted to let people know this info because the monitor really is a great value. I tried out 4 brands of VA monitors that weekend, and this is the one that stuck around (not to say the other panels were bad, this one just felt like the most natural fit in my setup).

Huh, mine if very accurate out of the box. Only thing I changed was gamma to Gamma 3. That's it. Also, how can you have brightness set at 80? Did I get a much brighter version than you and Linus? I have brightness set to 40, and even that can get too bright during the evening. I use 60W bulbs in my room, so it's not like it's dim in here either.
Uhh thats not how VA viewing angles work. They dont get brighter as you look at them from below. Or any direction.

Linus, please do a "best bang for your buck" on a handful of high refresh rate monitors. I think many of us are okay with spending a little extra to avoid the junk, but also can't really justify the price tag of the "cutting edge" that is often reviewed.

It would be very helpful for to have an affordable (not cheapest) monitor buying guide from LTT! It is such a pain to sort through all the cryptic model numbers and pros and cons when you are trying to find something decent and save money. With other hardware it is easier and less subjective, and I love how picky you guys are because I notice all that stuff too.
Definitely do more content of monitors in this market segment; as this is where most of your viewers shop. With the 5700XT and 2070S being able to push high refresh 1440p so well, I think it's ideal to find a display a tad cheaper than the graphics card.
Viotek. HW Unboxed has done great reviews on them, they beat displays twice their price. Like, legitimately. In contrast, response times vs other VAs etc

The sad thing is that the actual usefulness of a review about the new 2000$ gaming hardware probably concern about 1% of his audience, very wealthy viewers. Less rich people too want to buy good stuff, and not those dirt cheap no name brands you feature on cheap "round ups" I'm talking about decent stuff that have good perf/$ and that most people will save for.

AOC monitors are legit some of the best I've had, the features to price ratio is honestly better than other more notable brands and their quality control is really good. They also make solid high quality products.
You play CS and it's 2019: the overly saturated colors and crazy contrast modes are used by vast majority of pro players - it simply makes the enemy models stand out more.

Also, most people don't play with settings like those that pro players use so it would not be beneficial to use those as a test.

I got a 400 dollar 4k monitor from AOC in 2016. Its been pretty great. I have no issues with the brightness or anything. I am sure its not the best monitor. But for the price it's been quite nice. A lot of thr stuff linus picks on in these reviews, is because he plays with new tech all the time. I had no idea my monitor was a cheaper brand, because it was a crazy nice upgrade to the one I had been using since 2006. I still have that one as a secondary monitor actually.

It’s pretty easy to see the difference in image quality for me. Lighting and colors make all of the difference, I guess some people don’t have an eye for it. Also it doesn’t necessarily mean you have to spend a lot more money just to get ideal image quality. There are a lot of very decent monitors for the same price as other ones that simply look dull.

You completely missed the MBR and "boost" mode of the Overdrive, to get the advertised "1ms" response time.
You need to turn freesync off, and put the overdrive to "BOOST", or put medium/strong and adjust the MBR settings to your liking. However since you are so concerned with how "dark" it is, this will likely make it even worse for you Linus.
The reason for those colour profiles are for competitive games like CSGO. Its really good for making shadows more bright so its easy to kill enemies.

I don't know I could see the trials pretty easy in the video. It actually looked worse than on my Samsung HDTV when I play games on it and a whole lot darker as well.

Their market is not big in the US.. You can find the occasional reviews in different european languages. So they will not likely send out units to the USA. In general i think AOC knows that if they release a good product.. they do not need to invest much in marketing. A good deal will sell itself and will get picked up for a review anyway. As a customer you end up with a cheaper product, because eventually the customer also pays for the PR.

When it comes to monitor testing we need 2-4 monitors plugged in - one defined as the penultimate quality/control, others to compare with and the monitor being reviewed as us viewers can't see a lot.

My previous monitor had tilt, swivel, pivot and height adjustment. My new monitor has tilt and that's it. Fortunately the height is perfect, the stand is extremely stable and I can always just shuffle it around instead of having it swivel. And as for pivot, yea but no. I think it used it twice in ten years with my old monitor so I think I can manage. What this new monitor got is a decently fast IPS panel, FreeSync, 144Hz and a 2560 x 1440 resolution. I'm good with the fixed stand...

I just purchased the AOC CQ27G2 and it has the exact same feature. IMHO the colors on this monitor are a little funky and the screen seems dark, but when you use this feature and turn the size up until it fills the entire monitor, it returns the colors and brightness to what I imagine as 'normal' on other game mode monitors.
I too like setting my monitor so bright that my eyes water and the color looks washed out

@@PrimalLIQUID Its not bad. It seems bad to linus because he is used to super high end monitors. It is quite fine for normal gaming use. If you reduce brightness its quite easy on the eyes in the evenings and late night gaming.

Everyone is saying that the bright picture setting is only for corners is missing the opportunity to set it to scale over the whole screen and adjust the contrast up, makes this panel brighter and things pop more. Add some game color and tweak the rgb to your liking and you got a pretty good picture!

11:00 sRGB standard is 80 nits of brightness, I use my ~150-nit VA LCD at 50% and it's fine.

No, VA panels generally have great contrast. In fact, except OLED, they're the best when it comes to contrast. Where did you learn that they don't have good contrast? This monitor has a contrast ratio of 3000:1 while TN and IPS generally hover around 1000:1 or even slightly below that. The problem is that Linus "reviewed" the monitor with Game Mode on, which is a mode that LIFTS shadows and makes the screen look washed out. It's for competitive use, not accuracy. If you care about accuracy, you obviously turn that off. I have no idea why he turned it on for this review. He later turns it off, but he doesn't correct himself about the contrast. The damage is already done, because everybody now thinks this monitor is dull as hell because of what he said when using Game Mode. It's like if I reviewed an Asus monitor, then complained about it having terrible contrast after I turned up the shadows. *facepalm*

Does this moniter have a color temperature setting? It looked a bit warm to me and I prefer cool tones
the lack of brightness actually compels me more to buy it. I get chronic migraines, so a darker screen is better.
I prefer turning brightness down lower too (for more natural richer colours), but in that game it makes sense that the Arabian sun should wash stuff out and be uncomfortably bright.

That weird box you can move that has it's own brightness etc, I guess thats for when you're split screening 2 programs and want one to have different settings to the other maybe a video on one side and a text document on the other. Beyond that I can't think of what you might use it for

For me a brick outside the monitor is a better “feature”, because if the power supply goes, its easier to replace the cable.
Bingo. Not a lot understand this, and the power supply Is almost ALWAYS the first thing to go, probably for every electronic device that uses similar built in power supplies. I've repaired multiple monitors via replacing the capacitors from the built in power supply. It's probably the first thing to go in PCs as well. Never looked at the statistics so guessing.
You're right external power supplies are much better for the average user that wants to keep his monitor for a long time. But for someone who knows electronic basics it shouldn't matter. Fixed many power supplies by replacing the failed caps with top of the line japanese ones and they worked fine for many years. It is true that power supplies are usually the first thing that dies in anything that connects to mains power

External brick power supplies dont go out anywhere near the same level internal does, most likely due to the contained heat. Heat is the silent killer of electronics.
Yup, I have a monitor that has extremely cheap capacitors in the built-in power supply and every once in a while a new capacitor will go and I'll have to replace it.

I have a 1440p 144Hz monitor, but my ancient GeForce 980 SLI setup can barely manage 1080p/60fps in modern games. So I get nearly zero benefit. I think that going above 1080p/60 is worth it, for sure, but you need a 1080Ti or better to really drive it. It takes a tremendous amount of GPU power to deliver 2K/4K at 144Hz.
I've had 3 AOC IPS 1080P 27" monitors for the last 8yrs and there still going strong
I believe that feature is for custom settings for a streaming window in any corner of the screen
or for chat box in MMORPG or FPS

I use a 21:9 AOC monitor that runs at 3440:1440, I've used it for about 2 years and it's still running like a dream! I just may have to check this one out as well since ive been looking to get into the 120hz+ range.

Just picked up this monitor for £30 on marketplace. More than happy with it's "limitations"
I can see the "bright square" feature being useful in FPS games that uses darkness as a "blend in" feature.
The Square can be placed in the middle, at the crosshair, and with one click on the monitor, you have full vision at night, without going to software settings.
I have the 32 inch 2K version of this monitor and I think mine goes so high on the brightness that sometimes I can't look at it when it is above 50% brightness. Other than that for the motion blur (the trails), when set to Strong overdrive It clears it up, I enable it only when gaming. I think its a great monitor for the price

that bright frame might be to like, highlight a window or tab, if you have like a stream windowed in the top right, you can brighten it up
Brightness is for setting the level in the dark areas of the image; Contrast is for setting peak white levels.
5:30 I wonder if that feature might be for enhancing the lighting of an area of a game's HUD. Perhaps it's to make it easier to view a corner where you have a frame counter or ammo counter or some such

No! But maybe the camera is not capturing the difference good enough...
You can have lower brightness with higher contrast.
The one he said looked "better" looked more washed out to me with LESS contrast, but those sort of things rarely show up correctly on camera.
Remember that you are watching through a camera lens. Things can be really different in person.
I have the 1080p version of this monitor and I actually turned the brightness way down to one of the lowest settings. I find bright displays really hard on the eyes.
That Bright frame feature is for,
Like if you have to split that monitor in to two sections (You need two monitors for working, but you only have one) to work with and you need different brightness to the other section, you could use that feature.

I actually have this monitor, the “blandness” isn’t too noticeable actually (probably going to over think it now you gave a side by side)
I enjoy it a lot It took a solid 10min of configuring to get something that looked normal. Though once I did I’ve been running with it for about 3 months. No complaints.

I am coming from a 1080p 24 inch Asus 144hz monitor, no adaptive sync. Its a TN panel as well so I am looking at specs wise quite a massive upgrade. I think it's a VG248 but I'm not too sure.
I am not too concerned about the brightness, I literally always am on my PC in a very dark setting and overall, coming from the monitor I am on now I feel like it should be quite an overall upgrade. If I'm satisfied with it, I will get two more and use it as a triple screen setup for my simrig and turn that into my full-time desk.
We used to carry at least 2 or 3 different models of AOC monitor at the Best Buy I worked at in Kansas. I even owned two of them over the years. I had no idea they weren't popular here.
