Worth it, but I definitely missed the 4K crispiness -- even on 27 inches.
He never said it'll never happen or that tech will never change, but it's pretty clear that at present, the resources required to game at that resolution do not net solid returns. And honestly, with the way things are going on PC, they seem to be pushing more towards ultrawide and superultrawide setups and scaling the resolution with that, rather than just sitting on a 16:9 27" that really don't do it justice. As example, gaming at nearly 4K on a CRG9 is a much better experience.

just got my 4k 60hz 27 inch display with a 1440p 144hz 27 inch one and I have to say that the difference is tremendous (60-70cm distance), the pixel density is just so much better (bout 60% more ppi) and the image is so much more beautiful, ofc the refresh rate is bad for games like cod or cs go but in slow games like rdr2 - I can't stress this out how good the image is, don't trust people that say that there is no difference

Because that's what it was originally intended for, big ass screens. People started noticing that around 45 inces 1080p was looking more like 720p. I remember hearing about 6 years ago that 4k was created for movie screens. I guess so we can have true HD for them. 4k is a joke though, unless you rent alot of DVD's. They only send 720p signals to tv's. Hell, they're just now starting to broadcast 1080p(only for pay per views, but it's a start). I'll only get one when they start being used for actual t.v lol. I barely even buy dvd's anymore, I just pirate everything, and it's all 720p - 1080p anyway. A nice 32 - 40 inch monitor is good enough for me. So 4k really is irrelevant for me.

Like 1080p is finally able to be implemented properly. Internet speeds have just been adjusted to handle 1080p and storage too. Only the government has everything needed to run 4k properly. It wont be released to the public for a few years. The government is probably using 8k right now and 4k is old to them lol. 1TB of storage has just now become a reasonable price. Agreed. This would be a great video today. Best Buy has or had the Samsung IPS 4K 144hz monitor at $599, which is the price of my prior 2019 Dell 27" 1440p/144hz crappy TN panel. Since then I've gone LG 27" IPS 4K/144hz, but after two years the pixels were going bye-bye. So I got the Alienware QD-OLED 3440x1440p. I really like OLED, as it's undefeated, but I also miss the clarity and pixel density of 4K 144hz at 27". Yes, the LG C2 42" is OLED and 4K, but it has the same PPI as the Alienware QD-OLED. And it requires a larger desk than I have to be comfortable. In short, given the rapid decline in 4K high refresh panels and the 1440p OLED UW panels along with the LG OLED TVs that are faster than all or most monitors, we need a video.
I actually played through crysis 3 in 8K with 2080Ti SLI. After that I don't mind the difference between 1440p and 4K any more. They look equally blurry to me.
That initial statement makes no sense. Just like how supersampling an image in a higher resolution on a lower resolution display still makes the image look better, you can also see improvements in media played back in 4K. If your eyes have a fixed "resolution", then pixels stacked on top of each other in that empty space still create a better looking picture.
I think that too. I have 27" - 144Hz IPS Asus ROG monitor and I have zero complaints :) I use it in 120Hz though, as there is basicly no difference between 120 and 144Hz.
I had a 1600×1200 CRT once. It was so incredible for Retro gaming because you could perfectly upscale old DOS games pixel by pixel and it wouldn't even have those ugly upscale jaggies LCDs have at times because it was a CRT!

In 2024 (6 years since the launch of this video), 4K120 is pretty easy to come by on high-end PCs, although 1080p monitors at 144 and 165hz are also dirt cheap. 1440p is still a solid middle ground for a somewhat competitive experience.
Alex Disibio there's newer tech that reduces power consumption to display pixels (graphene for example) But the energy issue may always be a problem, batteries can't be improved much.
People often hold their phones very close to their faces though. I, for one, have terrible vision, so when i used my phone without glasses or contacts, I have to be inches away from the screen.

Gamed on 4K 60hz for a couple years before going to 1440p 120/144hz. Not sure I would ever go back, but I didn't particularly care at the time. I was doing 120hz and 90hz on CRTs anyway but 60hz was "good enough" for my budget for the time, but high refresh all the way AS LONG AS we have intermediate steps like 1440p, and not get stuck at 1080p.
Amen, 1440P is STILL many years later, the sweet spot in terms of resolution, refresh rate, and price. Not until 4K high refresh rate monitors drop to the same price, and GPU's become so powerful to drive 144HZ games will I ever switch to that.
I couldn't really care about the refresh rate, used 120hz on a CRT for awhile before upgrading. The difference isn't really that impressive, would prefer ultra wide vs refresh rate anyday.

It's said natural resolution of the eye is just above 32k. Such a display, with the right frequency, would be like staring into another room like an actual window pane. Of course such a display would also require another powerplant to supply the energy. Better stick to 4k or less.

Its almost 2023 and now 4k 144hz isn't 2k dollars anymore. 500/600 will get you a pretty good 4k 144hz gigabyte/samsung monitor and this is almost the same amount that I paid for a 1440p 144hz in 2017, taking in consideration inflation. In other words, now is the time moneywise and also 3000 series can get you there in gaming.

2024 update: its great on a 32" monitor but its a bitch to power - not unobtainable though, i have an rtx 3080 12GB that gets the job done in almost every game at high/ultra settings

I've had my 4k monitor for a little longer, and I deffinitely don't regret it, I love the 4k. That said, I would go for 1440 and high refresh instead if I were to get a new monitor right now.
TallBoy well, I have to agree with you there. I do a lot of video editing for my channel and the 4K real estate does help. But whereas I could always get an extra small-res monitor for cheap to help with extra screen space during editing... it feels much more expensive to get an “extra” 144p monitor for a better gaming experience, because I want the high frame rate too
2 yrs later I find out that there is no PCI/AGP slots, and no VGA/DVI/S-video or any video out whatsoever, and the built-in screen just died. To the dumpster it went.

4K = Cinematic/ Leisure gaming 1440 = Competitive gaming There is a time and place. When playing something like Rust, I prefer lower resolution with higher framerate and a smaller monitor. When playing RDR2, though, my 65 inch 4K OLED is perfect. More cinematic and immersive.
I remember playing CS 0,xx Beta at 640 x 480 or 800x600 since it was easier to hit something compared to playing at 1600x1200 which was the norm at the time. Also CRT Monitors had higher refreshrates at these resolutions.
And now I like you guys 10x more xD. Reported a bug once and your guy who responded was pretty awesome. Not to mention your games have depth in a way most games don't even attempt.
60hz isn't really 'low' frame rate. 30fps is. 60hz is sorta the middle of the road and it's okay. Unless you're mainly playing csgo or just online competitive really fast paced games then 60hz is not bad, especially if you got g-sync or freesync.
@@sierra7534 it is stupid to run at something that isn't an exact multiple of your refresh rate (non-decimal). Hence RTSS. I prefer using scanline sync or adaptive sync and vsync at max refresh rate - 3frames.

Potato Cow The thermals may be bad and worse than a standard desktop but that doesn't mean it can't run _anything_ in 4K. The OS GUI, all applications and some games run perfectly fine in 5K und 4K.
30 FPS is a cinematic standard. My reasoning is, having inputs from mouse and keyboard put on the computer, you have mental expectations of the outcome on the monitor. You can sorta "feel" the low framerate. I have 4000 hours in CS:GO and I can honestly not play on a 60hz monitor anymore. But wait! I watch CS:GO videos and highlights at 60fps no problem. There's a big diffrence between watching someone else and doing it yourself. This is not a porn related pun.

Geextreme if you have never tried a high refresh rate, how can you say it wouldn’t be a big difference? The difference is legitimately game changing, make sure you set your new monitor to its top refresh rate in the settings.
I went 4k 60hz, because I knew no better and 1440p 144hz ips displays were bloody expensive when I was buying. Gaming is okay. But holy shet that screen real estate is amazing. As a programmer I can really appreciate how much fits on my screen.
I agree, but even my 13year old sister uses her 4k screen for more real-estate by opening up multiple browser windows, and the Sims/Minecraft in 3840x900 windowed, so no need to be a skilled programmer to enjoy the benefits of 4k.

This video is more valid and relevant for the typical FPS gamer. I'm a writer, photographer, and programmer. I play single-player RPGs or strategy games. I don't play FPSs. So for me it's screen real-estate and clarity over refresh rate. I imagine some older gamer types are in my situation.
I do feel that most of these videos start with an underlying assumption that you want to be able to hone your competitive edge in fortnite. Frame rate is one thing, that I think for most gaming experiences looks just fine at 60 FPS. Refresh is another matter; I think I’d have a seizure at a refresh rate below 70Hz from the screen flicker. I’ve also found vsync/gsync are more important to me than frame rate; screen tearing is one of the most annoying (“immersion breaking?”) things, much more important than the difference between 60 and 120 FPS.
Even for games like GTA, AC, FarCry i find a better experience the the FPS it goes. I think overall it's about balance and needs. I don't see the point of low FPS high resolutions or high FPS low resolutions. But that's because I play a bit of everything and want good graphics and FPS.
At now I play gta 5 with Natural vision mod at 4k native(with 1.5 scaling and fxaa, because it gives perfect image quality without any aliasing) and 30fps. And the game looks beautifull and even better than NVR trailer. most of people download NVR and play at 1080p/1440p@60...144hz. And they constantly cry "trailer is fake. I can't get that perfect result"
I can't play The Witcher 3 unless it's atleast 120 fps. Any lower and it looks too bad for me. Some people have more trouble distinguishing higher framerates than they do higher resolutions though, so really it comes down to personal preference. For me I definitely prefer fps over resolution no matter what game I'm playing.

It seems like 4K is going to matter a lot more on my 50"+ TV screen than it will on my 23" PC monitor.
Because that's what it was originally intended for, big ass screens. People started noticing that around 45 inces 1080p was looking more like 720p. I remember hearing about 6 years ago that 4k was created for movie screens. I guess so we can have true HD for them. 4k is a joke though, unless you rent alot of DVD's. They only send 720p signals to tv's. Hell, they're just now starting to broadcast 1080p(only for pay per views, but it's a start). I'll only get one when they start being used for actual t.v lol. I barely even buy dvd's anymore, I just pirate everything, and it's all 720p - 1080p anyway. A nice 32 - 40 inch monitor is good enough for me. So 4k really is irrelevant for me.

Exactly! Tech simply hasn't caught up to 4k yet. It's been rushed out just like 1080p was. 1080p has really just became an actual "thing" like 3 years ago. Like 1080p is finally able to be implemented properly. Internet speeds have just been adjusted to handle 1080p and storage too. Only the government has everything needed to run 4k properly. It wont be released to the public for a few years. The government is probably using 8k right now and 4k is old to them lol. 1TB of storage has just now become a reasonable price. That's like 4 or 5 4K game downloads smh. Don't get me started on the download times. Even with super DSL it's still a pain.
depends on distance. More important is the field of view. If your display occupies large part of you FOV, then 4k matters.

Agreed. This would be a great video today. Best Buy has or had the Samsung IPS 4K 144hz monitor at $599, which is the price of my prior 2019 Dell 27" 1440p/144hz crappy TN panel. Since then I've gone LG 27" IPS 4K/144hz, but after two years the pixels were going bye-bye. So I got the Alienware QD-OLED 3440x1440p. I really like OLED, as it's undefeated, but I also miss the clarity and pixel density of 4K 144hz at 27".
Yes, the LG C2 42" is OLED and 4K, but it has the same PPI as the Alienware QD-OLED. And it requires a larger desk than I have to be comfortable. In short, given the rapid decline in 4K high refresh panels and the 1440p OLED UW panels along with the LG OLED TVs that are faster than all or most monitors, we need a video.

That initial statement makes no sense. Just like how supersampling an image in a higher resolution on a lower resolution display still makes the image look better, you can also see improvements in media played back in 4K.
If your eyes have a fixed "resolution", then pixels stacked on top of each other in that empty space still create a better looking picture.
1440p and 144hz is the sweet spot as always.

In 2024 (6 years since the launch of this video), 4K120 is pretty easy to come by on high-end PCs, although 1080p monitors at 144 and 165hz are also dirt cheap. 1440p is still a solid middle ground for a somewhat competitive experience.

Gamed on 4K 60hz for a couple years before going to 1440p 120/144hz. Not sure I would ever go back, but I didn't particularly care at the time. I was doing 120hz and 90hz on CRTs anyway but 60hz was "good enough" for my budget for the time, but high refresh all the way AS LONG AS we have intermediate steps like 1440p, and not get stuck at 1080p.

Amen, 1440P is STILL many years later, the sweet spot in terms of resolution, refresh rate, and price. Not until 4K high refresh rate monitors drop to the same price, and GPU's become so powerful to drive 144HZ games will I ever switch to that.
I couldn't really care about the refresh rate, used 120hz on a CRT for awhile before upgrading. The difference isn't really that impressive, would prefer ultra wide vs refresh rate anyday.

Its almost 2023 and now 4k 144hz isn't 2k dollars anymore. 500/600 will get you a pretty good 4k 144hz gigabyte/samsung monitor and this is almost the same amount that I paid for a 1440p 144hz in 2017, taking in consideration inflation. In other words, now is the time moneywise and also 3000 series can get you there in gaming.

Here's the update: you CAN do it and have the high fps, but you'll still need to throw a truck load of money at your setup, making the dollars per frame ratio an absolute joke.

2024 update: its great on a 32" monitor but its a bitch to power - not unobtainable though, i have an rtx 3080 12GB that gets the job done in almost every game at high/ultra settings

But whereas I could always get an extra small-res monitor for cheap to help with extra screen space during editing... it feels much more expensive to get an “extra” 144p monitor for a better gaming experience, because I want the high frame rate too

There is a time and place.
When playing something like Rust, I prefer lower resolution with higher framerate and a smaller monitor.
When playing RDR2, though, my 65 inch 4K OLED is perfect. More cinematic and immersive.
I remember playing CS 0,xx Beta at 640 x 480 or 800x600 since it was easier to hit something compared to playing at 1600x1200 which was the norm at the time. Also CRT Monitors had higher refreshrates at these resolutions.

60hz isn't really 'low' frame rate. 30fps is. 60hz is sorta the middle of the road and it's okay. Unless you're mainly playing csgo or just online competitive really fast paced games then 60hz is not bad, especially if you got g-sync or freesync.
As long as you can maintain 60 fps all the time. And once you start reducing settings to get more fps, what was the point in getting a 4k monitor?
20 fps is low frame rate. 60 fps is awesome frame rate and much better than is needed for the vast majority of games.

@@sierra7534 it is stupid to run at something that isn't an exact multiple of your refresh rate (non-decimal). Hence RTSS. I prefer using scanline sync or adaptive sync and vsync at max refresh rate - 3frames.

I actually dont see difference between 60 and 144 fps. Its so weird.. I was led to believe that higher refresh rate would be a game changer for me, buy it wasmt. Now im sad that I didnt go with higher resolution at 60fps.:(

30 FPS is a cinematic standard. My reasoning is, having inputs from mouse and keyboard put on the computer, you have mental expectations of the outcome on the monitor. You can sorta "feel" the low framerate.
I have 4000 hours in CS:GO and I can honestly not play on a 60hz monitor anymore. But wait! I watch CS:GO videos and highlights at 60fps no problem.

tbh i also dont feel hz is a big difference. i believe it is for a lot of ppl but to me its not a big deal. i played on 60hz until now and tomorrow i get a fresh 120hz 21:9 monitor ill see if i can spot the difference :D
Geextreme if you have never tried a high refresh rate, how can you say it wouldn’t be a big difference? The difference is legitimately game changing, make sure you set your new monitor to its top refresh rate in the settings.

I went 4k 60hz, because I knew no better and 1440p 144hz ips displays were bloody expensive when I was buying.

As a programmer mostly reading text 4K is the better choice. Ideally you have your secondary monitor setup as 1440p 120hz and the 4K as center
I love how the people he's showing it to like the 4k monitor better and he just totally ignores that. And now I have a 144hz 4k gaming monitor so I get 4k with the FPS.
This video is more valid and relevant for the typical FPS gamer. I'm a writer, photographer, and programmer. I play single-player RPGs or strategy games. I don't play FPSs. So for me it's screen real-estate and clarity over refresh rate. I imagine some older gamer types are in my situation.
I do feel that most of these videos start with an underlying assumption that you want to be able to hone your competitive edge in fortnite. Frame rate is one thing, that I think for most gaming experiences looks just fine at 60 FPS. Refresh is another matter; I think I’d have a seizure at a refresh rate below 70Hz from the screen flicker. I’ve also found vsync/gsync are more important to me than frame rate; screen tearing is one of the most annoying (“immersion breaking?”) things, much more important than the difference between 60 and 120 FPS.
why didn't you go 5k or 8k then?
Even for games like GTA, AC, FarCry i find a better experience the the FPS it goes. I think overall it's about balance and needs. I don't see the point of low FPS high resolutions or high FPS low resolutions. But that's because I play a bit of everything and want good graphics and FPS.
At now I play gta 5 with Natural vision mod at 4k native(with 1.5 scaling and fxaa, because it gives perfect image quality without any aliasing) and 30fps. And the game looks beautifull and even better than NVR trailer. most of people download NVR and play at 1080p/1440p@60...144hz. And they constantly cry "trailer is fake. I can't get that perfect result"
I can't play The Witcher 3 unless it's atleast 120 fps. Any lower and it looks too bad for me. Some people have more trouble distinguishing higher framerates than they do higher resolutions though, so really it comes down to personal preference. For me I definitely prefer fps over resolution no matter what game I'm playing.
