Just to point out. Charles and Diana got married on July 29, 1981. The date falls within the Presidency of Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy (1977-82). VV Giri was President from 1969 to 1974.
I also noted that mistake. VV Giri was not just no longer President, he was damn dead a year (1980) before the wedding (1981) of Diana and Charles. In the interview you both discussed that at the time of Prince Charles marriage with Diana, VV Giri was president and his decision to attend to marriage disappointed Mrs. Gandhi. At that time (1981), VV Giri was already died (his presidency ended by August 1974 and died on June 1980). He became president by Indira support, and he would not have behaved in that manner. Neelam Sanjeeva reddy who became president during Janata govt in 1977 to 82, quite ill disposed towards Indira, and he announced his willingness to attend Prince Charles marriage, without consulting PM Indira, he discussed with PL Sanjeeva Reddy IAS, (his secretary) who advised against President accepting without consulting PM

He was instrumental in helping her change her views on the market and this had profound changes which her confidant LK Jha (ICS) ushered in subsequently, in later years when he became Rajiv Gandhi’s confidant .
We need to remember that during the era of Mrs Indira Gandhi it was difficult to have an open economy because the Western powers with capital would've been back as colonialists through the economic backdoor. We had to bide our time until the world was ready to play ball with the "third world". So it's not proper to say Mrs Gandhi was a statist. It's what was required at the time.
@@thepeacefulwarrior2879 I agree with you. However she needed convincing and that came from LK Jha no less, who first proposed the dismantling of the post of Controller of Capital Issues ( a post he held a good 30 years earlier) . Indira Gandhi was and all of you (Mr. Thapar and his guests) still are very concerned about big things and trivial things for the rich and powerful. She won the election on GARIBI HATAO but when a year later or so Khushwant Singh asked her what she planned to do about poverty, she told him that the initiative had to come from the public! WOW!! She apparently never read her father's Tryst-with-Destiny speech on 15 August 1947.

All the officers literally shit in their pants in front of PM Indira! Few exceptions were there! She was a very strong-willed lady! Great Interview, Karan!
The claim that V.V. Giri insisted on attending Prince Charles's wedding and denied Indira Gandhi the chance to attend is inaccurate. V.V. Giri served as the President of India from 1969 to 1974, concluding his term long before Prince Charles's wedding to Diana in 1981. Therefore, there is no basis to suggest that Giri insisted on attending that particular event and prevented Indira Gandhi from attending. In 1981, N. Sanjiva Reddy held the position of President of India. However, there is no historical evidence or documentation to indicate that President Reddy attended Prince Charles's wedding, thus denying Indira Gandhi the opportunity to attend. It is worth noting that Indira Gandhi might have desired to attend Princess Anne's wedding in 1973, but her plans were likely disrupted due to President Giri's insistence on attending.
Quite an insightful interview, goes on to show the human side of our political leaders and how deeply flawed they can be as individuals in their private lives.
Mr. Thapar: You must read Flying Troika. It is the diary of KPS Menon, Nehru's ambassador to Stalin's USSR. Excellent prose! And you may like to read "Roses in December" by MC Chagla. Parts of the book deal with his terms as envoy to Britain and US and our occasional representative to the United Nations. Very good prose! You will also learn a lot about Jinnah, his mentor, whom he almost never liked.
Hi Karan, I loved the interaction - its simplicity and its balanced approach. I would love to 'hear' the book, but its Audible version is unavailable. Could you kindly convey to Mr Gharekhan that people would love to have that, please?
Mr.K.Thapar you are great learned &renowned man. I feel you are wasting your knowledge time on unnecesary things. Today 100 karod logonko to get one time meal isa problem ofcourse PM does not have time for poor people he has to look after Amirs of this country. Atleast people educated like you should think of poor hungry people of India.!
A secular democrat succumbed to partisan , narrow , ill conceived act of attacking her own people( albeit wayward , ) with tanks ,guns and destroyed Akaltakht , so much of Sri Darbar sahib . I blame her advisors with definite RSS leanings .
Mr Gharekhan was a colleague of my father, and a friend of my parents. But I think both he and Karan Thapar are perhaps confusing personalities when talking about which President went to Prince (now King) Charles's wedding. It must have been N Sanjeeva Reddy, not VV Giri.
What an Indira sychophant? He found “discipline” in emergency. Why do these guys believe that PM office doesn’t belong to Modi - it should only be with Gandhis. That’s so dangerous. But these guys are so used to living off the Gandhi’s hence the sycophancy.
What the heck are you taking Thapar? religiosity is one thing but superstitions another? religiosity is just one step further from superstition, all you consider superstition now once were religiosity. The concept of god itself is superstition once you realized that it's just a concept human made to understand their inability to understand the nature.
Thanks! Not for the wire but only for Karan's interview.

Very informative interview. But there is a factual error. V V Giri was not the President of India at the time of Prince Charles Wedding in 1981.
Why isn't the name and formal designation of the interviewee mentioned in the video description?
Quite interesting of a wonderful politician.
Quite an insightful interview, goes on to show the human side of our political leaders and how deeply flawed they can be as individuals in their private lives.
👏👏👏
Indira Gandhi made a big mistake buy giving Katchathevu without any discussions which had big problems for our fisherman
Chamcha are getting emotional😭😭
Hi Karan, I loved the interaction - its simplicity and its balanced approach. I would love to 'hear' the book, but its Audible version is unavailable. Could you kindly convey to Mr Gharekhan that people would love to have that, please?
And now we have colonised the coloniser, life always comes a full circle
Very interesting and enjoyable but one is surprised by the lack of reference to the biggest incident of her political career viz the emergency.
Karan Thapar is good in probing questions and the manner he asked questions irked many.Madam Jayalathaaji got annoyed with him and left in the middle.
India still hasn’t had a PM it needs to unravel its potential
Ditto!
Modi is the one.
Kindly bring in more discussion on what can be done to bring in wrong doers ,,who do not deliver their own words.❤❤😂
Mr.K.Thapar you are great learned &renowned man. I feel you are wasting your knowledge time on unnecesary things. Today 100 karod logonko to get one time meal isa problem
ofcourse PM does not have time for poor people he has to look after Amirs of this country. Atleast people educated like you should think of poor hungry people of India.!
Elite people and their elitist obsessions!
Nobel is small thing for Bapu & Smt. Indra Gandhi.
Unable to figure out the name of the gentleman - from the title & description ! Is this intentional?
CR Gharekhan for those interested en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinmaya_Gharekhan
one of the best episodes
. kudos KT....❤
This is an excellent interview. Unfortunately Rajiv was a visionary whose job was unfinished. Life sadly cut short.
RSS called Indira a durga and corrupt hindus worshipped her. Sanjay found out Dhirender brahmchari taught her yoga poses.
A secular democrat succumbed to partisan , narrow , ill conceived act of attacking her own people( albeit wayward , ) with tanks ,guns and destroyed Akaltakht , so much of Sri Darbar sahib . I blame her advisors with definite RSS leanings .
Thanks a lot sir for your informative vedioes and interviews .
Karan Thapar lighten up 🙄 I have never seen anyone so horrified by nail filing..
Nail filing in important meetings?. 🙄
Mr Gharekhan was a colleague of my father, and a friend of my parents. But I think both he and Karan Thapar are perhaps confusing personalities when talking about which President went to Prince (now King) Charles's wedding. It must have been N Sanjeeva Reddy, not VV Giri.
I see, soo she was another admirer of our colonizers.
What I gather from this interview is, Mrs. IG probably reacted as a female towards this man, not as a prime minister.
What an Indira sychophant? He found “discipline” in emergency. Why do these guys believe that PM office doesn’t belong to Modi - it should only be with Gandhis. That’s so dangerous. But these guys are so used to living off the Gandhi’s hence the sycophancy.
On Alexander: what is the big deal to agree with it?
Good lord, in such 🥵 weather we have someone in winter attire. Empire is truly alive
He sits in an air conditioned studio. Simple as that.
@@rodriguesroshan so does the guest, for reference he has seen far more of the world than our learned anchor.
@@trideep220280 Absolutely. But I don't see anything wrong with Karan Thapar's attire.
Imagine sucking up to the Brits 🙄
What the heck are you taking Thapar? religiosity is one thing but superstitions another? religiosity is just one step further from superstition, all you consider superstition now once were religiosity.
The concept of god itself is superstition once you realized that it's just a concept human made to understand their inability to understand the nature.
