In an interview to The Wire, former head of the Research & Analysis Wing A.S. Dulat talks about his new memoir, A Life in the Shadows. The book covers Dulat’s interactions with multiple senior leaders and important members of India’s security establishment - including current NSA Ajit Doval. Doval’s ambition and drive, Dulat said, was clear from the very start.

One thing Karan, allow the guest to complete what he has to say. Don't lead him to conclude what you wish to hear.
That's malafide intent not an impartial interview.
Example: Dulat trying to explain Mrs. Gandhi's graciousness in Goa and him about to relate another incident when you interrupted him to steer it in your way. That's not on.
Do shut up and let the man speak.
Unintended gems come out of such
    off the cuff remarks.
Your friends in Doon did have it right that you interview yourself not an invited guest. Right Mr. Ram Jethmalani, where ever you may be, smirking at this false sense of intellectualism?

Exactly. In in initial part of interview he is just pushing that Ajit Doval is there because he was always on right side. Me Thapar , in order to be ‘there’ in any profession you have to always be on right side. I am sure you would have also sniffed power in you earlier days and thats why you are here.

It is so plain- Thapar is pushing selected words( ambitious, sucker, turn coat, climber, unscrupulous...) infront of AS Dulat to pick and react. And 60% of time, Dulat adds other, more refined, assessments to those words - that Doval is efficient, gets results done, knows how to handle people....! And these are exactly the kind of qualities any Indian would want in a person who is the NSA or RAW chief.
Thapar can never grow up. He will always be partial and prejudiced. Just that his partiality and prejudice are covered in shiny little English phrases. Not a good guy to be exalted as India's top interviewer, but that's ok- it shows the poor calibre of those opposing India's right wing push.

KT always tries to put words into his interviewee to make his own point; 2. he has pre-conceived ideas of steering any interview into what he thinks is the bottom line. Hat's off to Sri Daulat for steering clear of KT's maneuvering and not falling into the trap. The expression on KTs face gives him away.
