  • The Emergency Period during Indira Gandhi regime is often regarded as dark days of Indian Democracy. But what was the actual reason behind Indira Gandhi proclaiming the emergency of 1975? In this mini-documentary, I go in depth to explain the root causes and reasons behind it. Starting from 1969 and the infamous battle between the legislative and judiciary to pass the privy purse laws and the nationalisation of banks laws.

      No judiciary in India is full of nepotism...and that's why judicial reforms which is a very important is being always delayed.... There is more checks on legislation like press, people's protest, elections...but no checks on judiciary...so I don't think we should make judiciary more powerful than legislative...both must be equally important..

    It had been going over my mind for the last few days that I didn't know the history of 1975 emergency. It was good to see this video come to the feed today. Gives a decent summary. Hoping to read about the emergency in detail some day in future.
    Also, I hope you will make a vide on 1977 election, the period between 1977 to 1980 and the reasons why and how Indira came back to power in 1980. It will be interesting to know how the nation's sentiments changed considering the oppression of Emergency.

    India's iron lady:
    India should not forget important achievements of Indira Gandhi while also criticizing her;
    1. Green Revolution: Indira Gandhi's government spearheaded the Green Revolution, transforming India from a food-deficit nation to self-sufficiency in food production through technological advancements in agriculture.
    2. Liberation of Bangladesh: Under her leadership, India played a crucial role in supporting the independence movement of Bangladesh, leading to its liberation from Pakistan in 1971.
    3. Nationalization of Banks: Indira Gandhi nationalized major banks in India in 1969, aiming to expand banking services to rural areas and promote economic growth by increasing access to credit.

    It's very difficult to choose which is more powerful btwn legislation and judiciary
    But i think legislation has more power than judiciary

    It was very heartening to see a recapitulation of the 1975 emergency and the cruel and autocratic rule of Indira Gandhi. The reason that it was heartening was that we all know what happened as a result: Indira Gandhi was toppled, no matter for how long. If it could happen to her, this recap gives us hope that it can happen again today. Perhaps Modi's juggernaut can also be brought to a dead stop by us citizens. We now have the added advantage of being able to communicate freely with the entire world, something which citizens of that time did not have.
    So there is some hope we can recapture our freedom again !

      Wrong
      It was clearly an election fraud by her opposition, I.e traitors like JP and Desai who wanted to create Anarchy
      Asking any older generation people it's clear that She was very popular, among people especially among the working class and oppressed sections
      Victory in 1980 says everything

      @AG 2021 lmao most popular leader. Self claimed ? Oh wait, WhatsApp par aya tha sach hi hoga. Mindwashed bhakt, IT cell controls you. Indira gandhi was way better than modi and saved punjab from terrorism and terrorist bhindranwala. Lost her life protecting punjab. Whereas modi , the mastermind behind so many riots and communal disharmony.

    Thanks for the English subtitles. Fantastic way of putting the story chronologically. 3 branches of governments should be balanced with powers with non of them having more power or overlapping powers on each other.
