All of these games have been absolute blasts for me this year.
Sales are down because people don’t want to spend 70$ USD on a video game when inflation is skyrocketing. I’ll wait for a Black Friday deal and get it for half off.
Or maybe most games now are the same, with only a few exceptional standouts. It now seems every game now is a giant open world with the same action, derivative characters, same 7 type of missions, and derivative story that stretches waaaaaay too long. That is why I am thankful for smaller devs that take risks and try something new, whether it be ultra successful or a flop. They are still trying new things.
Yeah prices for many people hurt and feel overkill. I wait for sales on physicals and even use MS reward points to make prices even cheaper. 95% of my PS5/switch physicals were under $50 probably half were bought under $25.

I'm just going back, and playing all the classic titles I missed growing up. Thats the glory of having a gaming PC. I just beat Grandia 1, I just started the Lunar series, Suikoden, Shining force 1, and 2........and Im absolutely loving it. Grandia was just so damn good.

Granblue Fantasy was really fun and I loved the pacing and exploration. It was a game you could just play for an hour or two a night and feel like you had a great adventure. It impressed me graphically too and the boss fights were so creative and epic. Loved Unicorn Overlord as well and it was my first tactical strategy RPG experience. Big fan of Vanillaware since the beginning with Odin Sphere and GrimGrimoire. And I'm currently playing Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, which I'm loving despite a few minor frustrations. Gives me all the old school RPG warm and fuzzies.
Like A Dragon Infinite Wealth is my favourite game this year and it probably will remain so at the end of the year, it was a great send off for Kiryu and Ichiban is still as great and funny as ever, i can't wait to see where the series goes next and i do wish that Like A Dragon Kenzan would get localised finally

Granblue relink is definitely my favorite game this year as it definitely hit the monster hunter itch for me, its story is definitely short but it basically just acts as a tutorial and the game really opens up afterwards with all the different builds you can do with your characters and the higher difficulty fights were absolutely amazing.
I am actually more enticed by the fact that people say its shorter. I know its counterintuitive as its less bang for your buck. I am not one to quit a game until I finish it. I just finished Persona 3 Reload and it was a great game but a monster time commitment. I will have to pick up Granblue!
So true, the quality of games is excellent at the moment but asking for £100 for a new release in a time when we are hard up for cash just isn’t right. That’s why the Indy scene is doing so well. In my opinion. New games should be £50 max! And don’t even get me started on leaving content out and making us pay extra 😂
I just don't like a lot of the games. I buy and support the ones I like. Such as persona 3 reload, unicorn overlord, I'll be getting astro bot and metaphor.
While I haven't finished it yet, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is so far my favorite game this year. Although, I absolutely loved Persona 3 Reload and Tekken 8. Tekken 8 has an amazing story mode that shouldn't be missed. And the Arcade Quest mode is actually a pretty solid tutorial for Tekken 8 if you ask me, while also being an enjoyable side story as well themed around the arcade setting.
Sand Land is so underrated, and almost no one is talking about it in my circle. Action rpg, with tank combat, exploration, awesome characters and story, even town building. Just an all around great game. Awesome list, John! Happy father's day, dude!
I can still highly recommend the game "INDIKA". It's a short indie game. It breaks so incredibly with the expectations you have of most modern video games. It's certainly not for everyone because it's disturbing, delightful, brutal, touching... it plays with a lot of emotions. At best, it's worth a look. And it's always good to support small developers who still dare to develop games that are outside the mainstream. Thanks for your videos Johnny! Best regards, Julian
@@jameskozy7254 it's great fun with the setting is IMHO top medival fantasy the characters are endearing and charming. Best of all its just a fun world to explore.

Your passion for gaming is so refreshing, I'm 57 now but been a gamer/Collector for the past 30 yrs, i do have times where i totally go off gaming for a period then bam it's back again, think that's normal with all gamers but i also think too much & spoilt for choice don't help, i remember the first time i bought my first ever console, the SEGA MEGADRIVE & games back then were scarce so you played one till you finished, think it was Aladdin, then i was waiting patiently for another decent game to come which was jungle book, then Lion king, such good memories but i use to complete games back then, atm I'm going through Demon Souls, Bloodbourne & Dark Souls & keeping to a minimum of 3 instead of jumping from game to game, i have such a huge collection but hardly completed any 😂

From what I've played so far, Steller Blade holds the top spot for me. FF7 Rebirth is up there too. Both great games. Still have to play Dragon's Dogma 2, Sandland, and a few more, but Steller Blade is #1 so far.
I'm not up to date on many games, but I heard good things both from you and the community about Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes and it's on sale so I'll be picking that up tomorrow.
Happy Father's Day Johnny. And I want to post this here because I respect you as a content creator and a person. The whole thing about Stellar Blade is ridiculous. I have zero issues with the character design as well as the fast majority of people. As for the "censorship", all the developers did was make the designs of certain outfits the way they originally wanted it to be. And that meant some of the outfits would be a little less revealing. Yet some gamers are acting like children over it. It's really not a big deal. And as for "ugly" characters, most characters aren't even ugly. A lot of these "ugly" characters are just still photos of a character making a awkward facial expression. And really, who gives a crap about how a character looks? Just play the game and have fun. Mario is a short plumber. Crash is a goofy looking Bandicoot. In Silent Hill and The Last of Us, you play as the most basic average looking characters. But again, it's about gameplay at the end of the day. Looks aren't everything games show that even the most basic looking person can be a hero. We have to get out of this whole "let's nitpick and find something to complain about" mentality. Let's just get back to playing games and having fun.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is so good no other games will be worth mentioning this year besides it. Not even if Elden Ring, Baldurs Gate 3 and Tears of the Kingdom was released this year too.
The ptoblem with FFVII Rebirth, and other SE games, not meeting sales expectations is that they cost too much too make. A former SE employee did a thread on this on Twitter.
You've got a great lineup, but seriously, you should definitely check out Helldivers 2. I'm surprised you haven't talked about it at all this year. It's one of the most impressive games I’ve played on the PS5 and a game that I believe you would thoroughly enjoy!
Absolutely agree Johnny I absolutely game as an escape and would rather be good looking characters than someone like myself haha. Only time I try to play a game as myself is Fallout and what I feel like I’m good and bad at. Also where did you get that shirt?! That’s amazing!
Looking forward to some of these games coming to the next Switch console. Edit: Unicorn Overlord is the best game I've played this year right next to Prince of Persia
Bought the collector's edition of Unicorn Overlord, my first ever collector's edition but it came with a card game. I wasnt making the same mistake I made with Odin Sphere.
My personal favorites this year so far have been 3)persona 3:Reload 2)final fantasy rebirth 1)stellar blade because the music, the atmosphere and how it reminds me of old school action ps2 games
Sand Land is definitely GOTY for me at the moment. I just finished it recently and it is truly underrated. Took me around 45 hours to beat most of its content, some on PC, some on Steam Deck and in both places such a pleasant experience. It was just pure pleasure where in contrast many modern games feel like a job nowadays 😂
Happy Father’s Day, bud! Prince of Persia: Lost Crown was a huge surprise for me this year. I wasn’t expecting much but I picked it up cheap on an Amazon sale and was honestly blown away.
Stellar Blade!!!! I love it! I also really like your take on the game. I also adore Final Fantasy but I just can't afford it. Keep up the good work my dude, your videos are awesome!
My top two this year are Like a Dragon and Infinite Wealth, however I have a certain fondness to Grandblue Fantasy Relink because in the end game after the story, you can literally set up your party to grind for you while you are afk so it allows you to play a game while doing other tasks which is nice.
There are a number of games that you mentioned in this video that I want to play one day, but I am trying to get through a good chunk of my backlog before I buy anything more. There is never enough time! Just finished Jedi Knight Academy and I am beginning The Callisto Protocol next. Also been playing Tomb Raider 1 - 3 Remastered on the side.
Here's hoping that you had an amazing Father's Day. You deserve it! I am currently playing the heck out of Grim Dawn. I do have Sandland installed on my Xbox, but I currently can't get past that first sand dragon.
Elden Ring: Shadow of The Erdtree and Black Myth: Wukong were the best gaming experiences for me this year. I still have some of ERS to play and quite a bit of BMW to play, but those were the standouts this year so far. I have purchased but not played the following which I expect all to be above average … Prince of Persia Lost Crown, Avatar and Dragon’s Dogma 2. I really need to stop buying games until I have time to play them. I could save a lot of money that way.
Sure is. I learn to play the Cosmo Canyon theme on my flute and recorder. I put my controller down 30 years ago and today on the same place just to listen to that native music.
Granblue fantasy was a very good game. I beat it after having beaten final fantasy and I have to say what really made it stand out for me was the level design. It was very unique and it kept pulling me through what otherwise could have gotten lost in a sea of other Japanese anime style arpg games that tend to blend together. The story, music and gameplay were all competent but the level design was unique and amazing.
There’s so many games I would love to play, but with finances lately, I have to pick and choose the games I want to play the most and hold off on others.
Animal Well is my GOTY so far. Right now I'm playing Master Key on Switch which is a top down zelda-like game. And just like animal well it's so much fun to explore the world for more items and dungeons. It doesn't tell you what to do, it's up to you to figure out where to go. I need more indiegames like these in the future, while not as good as Tunic or Animal Well Master Key is still great
Ive put over 60 hours into Brotato this year haha. Its in the vein of Vampire Survivors but with some really neat and addictive mechanics that make it fun in its own right. Only played the demo for Unicorn Overlord but I was really impressed with it, looking forward to picking up the full game. Been making my way through my backlog. So far: Blasphemous, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, Fallout: New Vegas, The Bug Butcher, and Divinity: Original Sin.

As a fan of 90s/2000s anime Granblue Fantasy Relink really hits the spot. It feels like a love letter to 16-32 bit RPGs/anime.
I just got a switch and have been playing astral chain and Bayo 2. I didn’t know the switch had such great games
Loved Astral Chain!
Astral Chain is awesome
Astral Chain is sooooo underrated, one of my favorite switch games. The music is beyond awesome!
Looking forward to some of these games coming to the next Switch console.
Edit: Unicorn Overlord is the best game I've played this year right next to Prince of Persia
Prince of Persia is very good. I’m playing it now and I really like it
Happy Father’s Day Johnny and to all my brothas putting in that work day in and day out
Your enthusiasm might just reignite this elder state millennial’s love of gaming. I have a PS5 & a Switch and barely play them😢
Bought the collector's edition of Unicorn Overlord, my first ever collector's edition but it came with a card game.
I wasnt making the same mistake I made with Odin Sphere.
My personal favorites this year so far have been
3)persona 3:Reload
2)final fantasy rebirth
1)stellar blade because the music, the atmosphere and how it reminds me of old school action ps2 games
V Rising is my GotY. It’s a game built for gamers. Haven’t had this much fun in a long time.
Here's hoping that you had an amazing Father's Day. You deserve it! I am currently playing the heck out of Grim Dawn. I do have Sandland installed on my Xbox, but I currently can't get past that first sand dragon.
Happy Father’s Day!! Thanks for what you do, Johnny.
Happy fathers day 🎉have a great one I really enjoyed ff7 rebirth and yes if you can support stellar blade and ff7 there great games 😊
I don't see how anything can possibly top Rebirth for me this year. Such a monumental, all encompassing experience.
Sure is. I learn to play the Cosmo Canyon theme on my flute and recorder.
I put my controller down 30 years ago and today on the same place just to listen to that native music.
I friggen love your videos. Execlent work
Granblue fantasy was a very good game.
Final Fantasy VII rebirth, stellar blade, and Paper Mario Thousand Year Door are my top 3 this year so far
A remake and a remaster? Gross....
@@spacelion4763hey I like what I like and I said what I said. I never played the original release of Thousand Year Door so this is all a new experience for me remaster or not. It's still one of my favorite experiences this year with games
@@metawanderer Still gross
@@spacelion4763rebirth destroys everything else that has come out this year.
Happy Father’s Day, Johnny. Great content as always!
