Happy Father's Day man,my favorite games so far from this year are Unicorn Overlord,Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden,Prince of Persia,Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door,,Berserk Boy,Eiyuden Chronicle 100 Heroes,Princess Peach and Shiren The Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island. All of these games have been absolute blasts for me this year.
Unicorn Overlord is easily my favorite so far.
I haven't had a ton of time to play games this year, but I was obsessed with Octopath Traveler 2 for a couple of months. Fantastic game.

Or maybe most games now are the same, with only a few exceptional standouts. It now seems every game now is a giant open world with the same action, derivative characters, same 7 type of missions, and derivative story that stretches waaaaaay too long. That is why I am thankful for smaller devs that take risks and try something new, whether it be ultra successful or a flop. They are still trying new things.
Yeah prices for many people hurt and feel overkill. I wait for sales on physicals and even use MS reward points to make prices even cheaper. 95% of my PS5/switch physicals were under $50 probably half were bought under $25.

The first FF7 remake was an atrocity in my opinion

Granblue Fantasy was really fun and I loved the pacing and exploration. It was a game you could just play for an hour or two a night and feel like you had a great adventure. It impressed me graphically too and the boss fights were so creative and epic. Loved Unicorn Overlord as well and it was my first tactical strategy RPG experience. Big fan of Vanillaware since the beginning with Odin Sphere and GrimGrimoire. And I'm currently playing Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, which I'm loving despite a few minor frustrations. Gives me all the old school RPG warm and fuzzies.
I played like 150 hours of it without realizing! Was a blast for me too.

Stellar blade was better than I was expecting and it had great depth to its combat mechanics.

Gameplay was fantastic - kind of underwhelmed by the writing / voice acting but hope they can improve on that in their next game

Just beat TOTK, 250 hours, an entire year of playing. It was a fabulous experience. I’m glad it’s over though too! Because I’m looking forward to finishing Hogwarts Legacy PS5 and diving into Metroid Prime remastered on my upcoming vacation ☀️ 🌴 🌊
Yeah TOTK was an awesome experience. And Metroid Prime Remastered was a fantastic game. Play that game 10 times last year ago.

Unicorn Overlord took me back to Shining force on sega. That's a gem
Like A Dragon Infinite Wealth is my favourite game this year and it probably will remain so at the end of the year, it was a great send off for Kiryu and Ichiban is still as great and funny as ever, i can't wait to see where the series goes next and i do wish that Like A Dragon Kenzan would get localised finally
I'm just going back, and playing all the classic titles I missed growing up. Thats the glory of having a gaming PC. I just beat Grandia 1, I just started the Lunar series, Suikoden, Shining force 1, and 2........and Im absolutely loving it. Grandia was just so damn good.
I feel game sales are suffering because new releases are WAY too expensive. Most people I know wait for a big price drop.

So true, the quality of games is excellent at the moment but asking for £100 for a new release in a time when we are hard up for cash just isn’t right. That’s why the Indy scene is doing so well. In my opinion. New games should be £50 max! And don’t even get me started on leaving content out and making us pay extra 😂
I just don't like a lot of the games. I buy and support the ones I like. Such as persona 3 reload, unicorn overlord, I'll be getting astro bot and metaphor.

Absolutely loved Granblue Fantasy Relink. A lot of post game stuff to fight bosses even though a lot of them are the same. The combat is addicting
Granblue relink is definitely my favorite game this year as it definitely hit the monster hunter itch for me, its story is definitely short but it basically just acts as a tutorial and the game really opens up afterwards with all the different builds you can do with your characters and the higher difficulty fights were absolutely amazing.
I am actually more enticed by the fact that people say its shorter. I know its counterintuitive as its less bang for your buck. I am not one to quit a game until I finish it. I just finished Persona 3 Reload and it was a great game but a monster time commitment. I will have to pick up Granblue!

Stellar Blade FF7 Dragons Dogma 2 Infinite Wealth and Sand Land were all amazing. Currently playing Banishers and I’m loving it too.
Sand Land is incredible and really keeps building in scope as you play it. It’s always adding in new stuff and the story was so good.
While I haven't finished it yet, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is so far my favorite game this year. Although, I absolutely loved Persona 3 Reload and Tekken 8. Tekken 8 has an amazing story mode that shouldn't be missed. And the Arcade Quest mode is actually a pretty solid tutorial for Tekken 8 if you ask me, while also being an enjoyable side story as well themed around the arcade setting.

So far I've only played Mario vs Donkey Kong and Thousand Year Door remakes. Both fantastic.
I can still highly recommend the game "INDIKA". It's a short indie game. It breaks so incredibly with the expectations you have of most modern video games. It's certainly not for everyone because it's disturbing, delightful, brutal, touching... it plays with a lot of emotions. At best, it's worth a look. And it's always good to support small developers who still dare to develop games that are outside the mainstream. Thanks for your videos Johnny! Best regards, Julian

Really good game, i got the Collectors edition, Love the game, was glued to it, lucky for me i was doing some work traveling for 12+hrs, so i just played nonstop

Spot on with Stellar Blade! I was hesitant to buy it, but I am so glad I did in fact played it back to back three times to get all the endings!

@@jameskozy7254 it's great fun with the setting is IMHO top medival fantasy the characters are endearing and charming. Best of all its just a fun world to explore.

Sand Land is so underrated, and almost no one is talking about it in my circle. Action rpg, with tank combat, exploration, awesome characters and story, even town building. Just an all around great game. Awesome list, John! Happy father's day, dude!
Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown has been my favorite game so far, this year.
Just finished playing Tales of Kenzera: Zau, and was pleasantly surprised by how good it was. I didn't have super high expectations, but I really enjoyed the combat, story, and music.

I just got a switch and have been playing astral chain and Bayo 2. I didn’t know the switch had such great games

My GOTY so far is Tomb Raider 1-3. Played the first for 90 hours to get all the trophies and loved every minute
I'm not up to date on many games, but I heard good things both from you and the community about Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes and it's on sale so I'll be picking that up tomorrow.
My favorite games of this year is Rise of the Ronin( exhilarating combat, fun to traverse open worlds, variety of challenges, good story) & Stellar Blade( incredible character designs, nice visuals, fun combat, and God-tier music )
I haven't played any 2024 or 2023 games this year though i have picked up used games byt my backlog is massive so apart from Fzero99 everything so far is before 2022. Currently playing FF9 original and ZombiU onPS4 and s mario bros U deluxe on switch qlong with deamon X machina

From what I've played so far, Steller Blade holds the top spot for me. FF7 Rebirth is up there too. Both great games. Still have to play Dragon's Dogma 2, Sandland, and a few more, but Steller Blade is #1 so far.
So far I think the only new game I’ve played (and still grinding through) is FF7 Rebirth! Been enjoying taking my time with this one

You've got a great lineup, but seriously, you should definitely check out Helldivers 2. I'm surprised you haven't talked about it at all this year. It's one of the most impressive games I’ve played on the PS5 and a game that I believe you would thoroughly enjoy!

Your passion for gaming is so refreshing, I'm 57 now but been a gamer/Collector for the past 30 yrs, i do have times where i totally go off gaming for a period then bam it's back again, think that's normal with all gamers but i also think too much & spoilt for choice don't help, i remember the first time i bought my first ever console, the SEGA MEGADRIVE & games back then were scarce so you played one till you finished, think it was Aladdin, then i was waiting patiently for another decent game to come which was jungle book, then Lion king, such good memories but i use to complete games back then, atm I'm going through Demon Souls, Bloodbourne & Dark Souls & keeping to a minimum of 3 instead of jumping from game to game, i have such a huge collection but hardly completed any 😂

The ptoblem with FFVII Rebirth, and other SE games, not meeting sales expectations is that they cost too much too make. A former SE employee did a thread on this on Twitter.

There’s so many games I would love to play, but with finances lately, I have to pick and choose the games I want to play the most and hold off on others.
I learn to play the Cosmo Canyon theme on my flute and recorder.
I put my controller down 30 years ago and today on the same place just to listen to that native music.
Johnny I gotta say that you remind me of myself as far as how you look at games. I'm 42 and have been playing since nes Mario Zelda etc. I like games for what they are. I'm not over critical and I don't focus on everyone else's expectations. I just like to have fun and I can find something good about most games. I'm a huge jrpg fan and we are spoiled right now.
I would say my best of 2024 includes Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Stellar Blade, South Park Snow Day, and Megaton Musashi W Wired. I'm really excited for Astro Bot and College Football 25.

ff7 rebirth for me but.....honestly, everybody should check out Nine Sols, specially if you like cyberpunk mixed with eastern style. it's hard but never unfair.
Ff7 rebirth, sandland, unicorn overlord, and paper Mario are classics for sure. I thought granblue fantasy relink was kind of weak
There are a number of games that you mentioned in this video that I want to play one day, but I am trying to get through a good chunk of my backlog before I buy anything more. There is never enough time!
Just finished Jedi Knight Academy and I am beginning The Callisto Protocol next.

I’ve been playing the Valorant beta on consoles . I’ve been having a lot of fun with it! 😌
My top 3 this year are:
- Unicorn Overlord (GOTY so far), It is just Vanillaware awesomeness, can't help but appreciate the art/music and enjoy the laid back gameplay!
- Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth
- Granblue Fantasy Relink, it reminded me a bit of Ys even though it's a linear and quite short for the main story and that's why I enjoyed it, because it doesn't overstay its welcome and deliver in some epic fights and music and the extra content is double the main story and all is optional and doesn't overwhelm or get in the way of the main quest!
I'll leave my disappointments for when you make a video for that!

I picked up Thousand Year Door, I’ve got it on game cube from back in the day also. Sort of been reticent to jump in cuz people are saying it’s quite boring and long winded compared to the excellent Super Mario RPG Re-release from late last year.
Might be less of an insult to TYD, and more of a compliment to just how great SMRPG is/was.

Granblue fantasy relink isn’t a short game. The campaign is around 11 hours but you unlock the post game which is where the meat of this game is. I have over 100 hours in this game right now

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is so good no other games will be worth mentioning this year besides it. Not even if Elden Ring, Baldurs Gate 3 and Tears of the Kingdom was released this year too.

Game of 2024 for me is shiren 6 or animal well.
Shiren 6 is so good,you know what has been great fun for me? Helping others continue their runs,it is such a fun and addictive system,but I feel satisfied whenever I go to the rescue board,take the quest and then complete it. The game just is awesome

My top two this year are Like a Dragon and Infinite Wealth, however I have a certain fondness to Grandblue Fantasy Relink because in the end game after the story, you can literally set up your party to grind for you while you are afk so it allows you to play a game while doing other tasks which is nice.
I remember GamePro magazine or EGM magazine had a section with a long list of games (1990s) with the prices and some of those games were like 70 or 90 i think. I think one of those games was Phantasy Star 3 for the Genesis.
Ive put over 60 hours into Brotato this year haha. Its in the vein of Vampire Survivors but with some really neat and addictive mechanics that make it fun in its own right.
Only played the demo for Unicorn Overlord but I was really impressed with it, looking forward to picking up the full game.
Been making my way through my backlog. So far: Blasphemous, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, Fallout: New Vegas, The Bug Butcher, and Divinity: Original Sin.

I've barely played any new releases from 2024 (my unopened copy of Unicorn Overlord is staring at me on my shelf....), but my favorite so far is "Astlibra Gaiden: Cave of the Phantom Mist," which is a stand-alone DLC story for "Astlibra: Revision" from 2022. The original game is one of my favorite titles of the past decade, and so having an excuse to jump back in and dump 30 more hours into that world and combat system was much appreciated! I strongly recommend anyone who likes 2D action RPG games like Odin Sphere and Muramasa to check out Astlibra Revision, it's on Switch and PC

Sand Land is definitely GOTY for me at the moment. I just finished it recently and it is truly underrated. Took me around 45 hours to beat most of its content, some on PC, some on Steam Deck and in both places such a pleasant experience. It was just pure pleasure where in contrast many modern games feel like a job nowadays 😂

SMTV, Stellar Blades, Gran Blue Fantasy Relink, and Sand Land are the best games I played this year but there are two games out on Steam people have to try that are really good Anger Foot and Nine Sols.

Well, now I'll be waiting for someone to mod Johnny into Golden Axe. And Rob Man as well. :P Which reminds me, back when I was in college, a friend showed me a version of Final Fight his cousin made using himself as a playable character, my friend and his brother as well, and a bunch of their friends as enemies. It's a weird mixture of digitalized graphics with Final Fight stages. You can look it up, Fainou Faiti - Vilelas edition (that name is just Final Fight written with Brazilian phonemes, so it reads the same). For those aware, yes, the cousin is the guy who made Street Chaves.
