Hope you're doing well. And reading comments.
Noticed some play in my little Jet and wanted to review before I went into it. I had taken apart a Vicmarc many years ago to check those awesome tapered bearings (dumb move; turned out the "clicking" was a loose grub screw on the pully -- rookie mistake).
Your excellent and and complete tutorial gave me the right idea for the jet. Not a separate nut for tension -- the hand wheel serves for that. Loosen the grub screw and some careful tightening. Little machine now hums away. It had sat on a floor for years with a bit of shameful abuse. Now I have a use for it and it is working perfectly.
I will echo the appreciation repeated many times here for a generous and thorough walk-through. Rare in this medium. Hope things are well with you.
    Greg

Excellent! Thank you so much for sharing this. I’ve picked up a wobble on my Jet 1642 and was intimidated by the needed fix. I’m ready to give it a shot after watching your video. Thank you.

Thanks you very much Jim for taking the time to share your knowledge and experience with the rest of us. I just changed the bearings and belt on my 1642 today with your able assistance and everything went very smoothly, There were several thing I never would have known without this video. It took away any nervousness and gave me the complete confidence to complete the job successfully. My lathe runs like new now!

I have a 1642-EVS 110v and while I haven't had to replace the bearings yet, I am so grateful you did this so it will be easy when I do. I sincerely appreciate your hard work.

Jim, Thank You for this video. It gave me some confidence to enlist my daughters boyfriend to tackle my 3520B. One obvious difference is the pulley door and the RPM readout are reversed. The 2nd was the lock ring on the Handwheel end of the spindle is different. Outside, not inside the headstock. The 3rd difference was your ease of removing the bearings from the housing and off the spindle. Mine was not that easy. Not impossible, but much tighter. Going back was still very tight. We used the tail stock quill to slowly and carefully push the spindle back in. We used a 1x1 piece of pine to push the pulley on against the movement of the quill. All is well now. The bearing knock is gone. My turning mentor, a life long machinist, confirmed the bearing problem with the knock disappearing about 500 RPM. I lived with it at his recommendation until it got to 1000 RPM and then ordered the bearings. Nice and quiet. Last, lining up the pulleys involved a very tight tolerance. Moving the pulley 1/64th of an inch would create or eliminate a steady noise. The ribs in the belt, must run exactly in the grooves in the pulley. All in all, I will not hesitate to replace it again, if needed. I'm glad I had an experienced mechanic to give guidance and encouragement. Not to mention the two extra hands. BTW, my lathe is 12 years old.

The bearings came and I installed on my Powermatic 3520b. It worked and your youtube gave me a degree of pseudo experience. Mission accomplished and thanks so much for your very clear instruction.

This is something that I'm sure I will have to do eventually to my PM, nice to have a step by step procedure.
    Thank you !

I have had good service using VXB and you can get them through Amazon. The PM will use three bearings, two large ones and one smaller one. Good luck and message me if you have questions. Thank you for watching my videos.

Jim, it is obvious this ain't your first rodeo. Excellent video series. Would you mind me adding a link to your videos on the Mustard Monster site for 3520 lathe owners? There is a document out there that describes the process but I think your video might lessen the anxiety for a lathe owner who hasn't replace bearings.

What number is the back bearing. You said 6207 for the front one. Are they both the same? Thank you. Gre as t video.

you can actually get the bearings from Amazon. I've had good luck with the VBX brand. The front bearing is a 6207-2RS and the rear is 6205-2RS. Be sure to take note of how to set the preload on the bearings.

Thanks for a very simple but informative exercise. Question re my 3520B Powermatic. It appears that we have a washer type threaded screw on the handle side of the shaft. What tool to use to take off? Does this mean that once I remove this threaded washer that there will be next the collar? Also, what has to be done with the two bearings on the spindle side? Do they touch? Have a washer of some type in between? and how to install those together? Thanks

Hey Alan I apologize for being slow to reply. Once you remove the handle/wheel and the the threaded collar there will be a bearing load wave washer. Once they are removed you can follow the videos. The threaded collar serves the same purpose as the one on the 1642 the two front bearings are separated by a spacer. They should come off as the one does one the 1642. Clean everything as best you can before dissembling and it should come off pretty easy. It's not a press on fit. Good luck and if you have more questions please let me know.

Great video. Where can you get the SEALED bearings and what are the part numbers. The ones I found from Jet dealers appear not to be sealed type.
