  • In this video we will go over how to change the bearings in my Laguna REVO 12/16 midi lathe. I couldn't find a video on how to do this and only had written instructions from Laguna so I decided to make a video for anyone else looking to do this.
Please note as mentioned in the beginning of this video. I highly recommend getting a magnetic spring when you order your bearings. It is very sensitive and you don't want to damage it and then have to wait on a replacement. Best to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.
Other tools you'll need is a rubber mallet, pliers, flat head screw driver and a #3 Allen tool (long handle if you can). may need a small piece of scrap wood for some tapping on bearings.
I hope you enjoy and I hope this helps. please consider subscribing!

Thanks for making the video. My bearings are fine right now, but I am sure down the road they will have to be changed. This makes it look easy, nice job!

    Thank you!

Great video. so I assume you were hearing a noise from the bearing and that is why you replaced them. I replaced the black handle on the left with a old faceplate and a piece of maple to I have a larger disk to move my chuck on the other side. It has been really useful. Now to tackle that tiny wheel on the tail stock so I can advance my forstner bits more smoothly.

I really enjoyed your repair video. I sent you a note telling you that. I am having a problem that I decided to ask you. Do you have any experience with the tailstock? What’s wrong. Its EXTREMELY hard to extend the quill or retract it. At first it seemed to be when it reached the point where the automatic knockout would kick in. Now it’s even worse. I don’t know why? Yes I have contacted Laguna but I have not had a chance to really study the reply to my ask. I don’t know if I told you but I turn sitting in my wheelchair. I did turn today and now I am in a world of pain and it’s easier to ask than read. A question I have. Could I have bent something? What I did was this. I tried to get the big wood worm into the proper size hole. The problem was I was drying to bore into Brazilian Cherry? It’s what we put down in our home. It’s one of the hardest woods out there. I was cranking on the tailstock handle when I discovered that the Wood Worm was not cutting threads it was boreing a hole. In doing that could I have bent something? I also have recently waxed the quill. I am not sure if I can say that’s when it got worse but I was having trouble with it before I tried the wood worm. Yes I also recently did wax it fully extended but polished off really well. Tell me what you think. PLEASE. Also something I don’t like and I am looking for a reason as to “why”. The early version of the 1216 the power switch was Red/Green. These are standard international colors for On/Off. Stop/Go. Why on earth would you deviate from the standard and change to White over Black? Why did they do this? Then of all things make the spindle lock button RED. No one has been able to explain that to me because nobody knows. I tried to order a Red/Green switch thinking that White/Black was an older model because everything I looked at was Red/Green. If its not an expensive hard to do switch I am going to buy a second switch and then have one of my super star XEmployees paint it proper for me. Hey, thanks for your time and help.

I took the outside bearing out. Removed set screws from inside on the spindles. Can’t see or find the key to remove it so I can remove magnetic ring and separate the spindles.

Is your machine still running good?

if the bearings are bad can that cause any kind of (slight) wobble in the chuck? I think the guy I bought my REVO from dropped it because the handle had a nick in it which I paid no mind to until things started getting wobbly- suddenly. The spindle seems to spin true but when I put a chuck on, it isn't true any longer. Thanks for any input AND the video.

I have a question. Is the magnetic ring already in the headstock? So when you buy new bearings you should order a new magnetic ring incase you mess it up while charging out the bearings, correct? Your video is well done. Thanks for documenting the swap. Well Done! Yes I have a new 1216. I love it. I find Laguna customer support lacking in a big way.

Where did you source the bearing? Laguna directly? Also how did you know they needed to be replaced? Mine has a ticking noise is that what triggered you to replace them?

Sorry if there is an obvious answer but what is the purpose of the magnetic ring? Thanks.

You didn’t mention that when you replace bearing in a lathe, they must be installed in the proper direction to enable the bearing to be properly “loaded”. Secondly you didn’t mentioning how to properly “load” the new bearings, once they are installed…. !
