    Men of Harlech, march to glory,
    Victory is hov'ring o'er ye,
    Bright-eyed freedom stands before ye,
    Hear ye not her call?
    At your sloth she seems to wonder;
    Rend the sluggish bonds asunder,
    Let the war-cry's deaf'ning thunder
    Every foe appall.
    Echoes loudly waking,
    Hill and valley shaking;
    'Till the sound spreads wide around,
    The Saxon's courage breaking;
    Your foes on every side assailing,
    Forward press with heart unfailing,
    'Till invaders learn with quailing,
    Cambria ne'er can yield!
    Thou, who noble Cambria wrongest,
    Know that freedom's cause is strongest,
    Freedom's courage lasts the longest,
    Ending but with death!
    Freedom countless hosts can scatter,
    Freedom stoutest mail can shatter,
    Freedom thickest walls can batter,
    Fate is in her breath.
    See, they now are flying!
    Dead are heap'd with dying!
    Over might hath triumph'd right,
    Our land to foes denying;
    Upon their soil we never sought them,
    Love of conquest hither brought them,
    But this lesson we have taught them,
    "Cambria ne'er can yield!"

      Could not agree more, the first world war ripped the guts out of the innocent victorian world we had before; to paraphrase Louis Barthas.

    • @thequickrundown721
      @thequickrundown721  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @nomad 101 Louis Barthas wrote on how it took a specific kind of morality and upbringing to make the first world war possible; which is also what made it so tragic. Similarly to how when the Soviet Union fell the future was functionally "cancelled"; so too was the Victorian conception of the world cancelled. You simply couldn't engage in the same level of thinking and attitudes that the Victorians had after WW1. If you get what I mean.

    • @Alfred5555
      @Alfred5555 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I personally don't think it sounds better, however the verses sang in Welsh on this version are probably the best verses. It's not just the same verses repeated again in Welsh, it's just the second half of the song but in Welsh, and I think those verses are written better using the lyrical sense of the Welsh language better and the contents are more rousing too. Hence why I imagine those verses are sung in Welsh for the Welsh people of a Welsh song.

      The Welsh are not Saxons. Nor are the Scots. "British" is a social concept, not a genetic one.

    • @Alfred5555
      @Alfred5555 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@kevinsingleton7343 No one said it wasn't, but the Welsh are British, as are the English. The Welsh are Celt and the English are Saxon, but both are British. Ergo, the British have a war song (that many many more English troops will have sang that Welsh troops, as British military regiments have long been "social concepts" rather than tribal groups, with English in Scottish regiments and vice versa) against themselves, the Saxons being about 90% of the British too.
