Non military, but was once told by one, "If the British army requires a position held against impossible odds, use an English or Welsh Regiment, Should The British Army require a position captured against impossible odds, use a Scottish or Irish one, and should her majesty require both at once, well, thats why God created Gurkhas."
Australian troops were brave and fearsome as well. Give me British officers, Australian soldiers, American Resources and German Technology and you'll get the deadliest war machine.
Heads up. This is an actual live recording of the Choir of the Royal Regiment of Wales, performing in the very Church that surgeon Reynolds struggled to save the lives of the lads, in Rorke's Drift. It was recorded back in the 90's as part of an anniversary on location. This is the reason why you hear the emotion (sniffing/ sneezing) . It's authentic.... brilliant stuff!
This was played at my grandads funeral in may last year (2013). I had never heard it before then. He was part of the welsh guard in ww2 and even a year on, this song still makes me cry
Sam Houston Personally I say neither. Ghandi was a pedophile and performed unnecessary enemas on young girls, and collected the waste in a bag. He was also a racist against Africans. His killer was a nutty nationalist and murdered someone to justify his politics.
Not exactly technologically inferior... Some large number of zulu's had claimed Martini-Henries from Isandlwana. The advantage lay in the training and discipline with said rifles, and the zulus knew this and still used spears and sheilds in their assaults and rifles to surpress as they were too precious an asset.
Well the Zulus at Rorkes Drift were only reserve troops from Isandlwana and hadn't had any Martinis since they had no time to pick them up.They instead used yet again technological inferior guns.
I just looked this up, but apparently a man working for Morgan Stanley's office in the World Trade Center during 9/11 sang this to his counterparts while they were escaping in order to keep their spirits high. He went on to stay within the building to help as many people as he possibly could, and paid the ultimate price to do so. That gives this song so much more context and meaning. Already such a great anthem.
I may not Welsh but as an Englishmen all I have to say is I would be happy to fight besides the Welsh. Such a shame we don't have that badass dragon on the union jack.

@@connormeng9773 Indeed, but the point I was making was it incorporates designs from countries that are most definitely not Anglo Saxon, but Christian - adopted from *Celtic* nations. His point that an Anglo Saxon country would never adopt a Celtic design infers that the St Georges cross *is* Anglo Saxon by design, when they were all Christianity based symbols, and not reflective of culture or lineage, but religion. Not that we need _another_ bloody flag, but perhaps a more authentic flag to represent the unions not of religion (in an increasingly irreligious or secular world) but of the ethnic peoples of the british isles would be to feature the Celtic red Dragon alongside the Anglo Saxon white dragon, in a flag signifying the relationship between England and Wales for use in diplomatic functions, or even for people of mixed welsh or english heritage. but as I said, who needs another flag, and such a gesture at this point would look merely tokenistic and needless.
I have to say that "You and yours in safety now, The Harlech men are keeping." Is probably one of the most heroic pieces of lyric I've ever heard in any song ever written.
Where can I get a copy of this? I am actually a member of the Regiment who sang that day, on the 120th anniversary of Rourke's Drift. What a day to remember!

The Brits love fighting between themselves as English, Welsh and Scots. But, as an outsider don't you ever try to take advantage. They will close ranks, kick you back from where you came, and then pick up where they were when you interrupted them. It's in their nature but they love their island nation.
Reminds me of the interbranch squabbling of the United States armed forces. I've heard a story of a national guardsman, a few Marines, a sailor and two airmen at a bar heckling each other mercilessly, but when some drunk civilian tried to pick a fight with the guardsman the lot of them got up in unison to back the guardsman up. Then they all sat back down together at the same table and partied together as if they were best friends that hadn't just been loudly talking shit about each other for over an hour.

So far this is the best version of this song in the King's English. This song for the hearts of brave men who face battle. I was never in war, but I have discovered a truth about why men go to war. Men are disposable. If you can convince a large group of men that war is necessary then you will have war. V. D. Hanson in his book "Carnage and Culture" captures that idea. Certainly, the movie "Zulu" captures that idea. If you find that nothing is worth dying for, then you will die for nothing. The thought that living your life is more important then any belief anyone can espouse is a very dangerous. The idea of freedom is worth dying for. Your life without freedom is a slow death. Tyranny and oppression are not good for living a good life. The song also inspires men to be brave in battle. Think of one country that do not have brave men, there is none !!! A nation of cowards will fall very quickly. The La Marseillaise is also song for the brave.
"Men are disposable, women are perishable." Both are indispensable. It is one of the great truths of human biology and society, and we forget it at our peril. To blind ourselves to it is not Sparta, but madness.

23 years ago today, 9/11/2001, Rick Rescorla sang this song while leading people to safety out of Tower 2 of the World Trade Center. After leading over 2000 to safety, he went back up for more. His remains were never identified after perishing in the colapse. Cornish born, former British Para, a retired US Army Colonel, Vietnam veteran who fought at the battle of la Drang Valley with 2/7 Cavalry.
I've never more passionately loved and spiritually appreciated ANY Christian or religious hymn or prayer more than Harlech Men and it grows dearer to me by the day, the hour, every minute now. The Welsh have also GOT to be the best tenors in history too, e.g., Tom Jones and Ed Humperdink. But these sons of the guys at Rourke's Drift who sang this top vow/song/prayer/hymn into my everloving atheist heart, so long ago, is in the best way such a thing can be done. It is the answer to the question of why we fight as we are about to fight. It is a battle song. This song and music and performance is more than the sum of its parts; is sacred and holy, if anything is sacred and holy.
@@didomonglo2653 he's not wrong though. The English share a majority of their DNA with the Welsh and Cornish. The anti Scottish sentiment is wrong though.
@@louisbaker4362 Wales Scotland and Ireland have retained their celtic culture unlike England hence why they are called celtic countries. Not really anything to do with DNA
That man who sang this to keep the spirits up and panic down while people evacuated the Morgan Stanley bldg on 9-1-1, and died while making sure all got out, should be awarded the Medal of Honor... Posthumously. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐👍👍&🙏🙏 for his surviving relatives and family.
Rick Rescala. Born in Cornwall, emigrated to the US, fought in Vietnam (it's him on the original front cover of the book "We Were Soldiers....and Young" by Jim Galloway), worked for JP Morgan during the 1993 WTC attack, and predicted that the next time the WTC was attacked it'd be by way of aircraft. The man was a Hero.
+William Llwyn Well, it wasn't a Wales v England siege it was Lancastrians vs Yorkists. But yes, the Lancastrians were Welsh and Yorkists were mostly English.
William Llwyn Actually, Callum was right as well. This song traditionally refers to the seven year siege of Harlech Castle during the War of the Roses, which is why it's sometimes called 'Through Seven Years'. Although, it *is* also associated with the briefer siege of Harlech Castle during Owain Glyndwr's revolt.
Not Welsh, or British, hell I'm Turkish but true love for country also comes with recognition of other folks' passion for their own And English language has some specific charm when it's used as well as this.
The song that Rick Rescorla was singing as he led many would be victims of the 9/11 attacks on the twin towers, saving hundreds of lives. Anyone who mentions pedophiles, racism or any other negative thing would do well to remember the ultimate bravery and sacrifice of this brave, brave man.
I was playing airsoft and our base was under attack. One of the guys in my squad started singing this. It raised our morale and let us win the battle. I fucking love this song
That sounds like a just a E Major (first inversion), the placement of the inversion gives it the power when the basses and the tenors are absolutely hoofing the G# It’s magic
This is the best song to listen to while playing Mount and Blade: Warband. Me and ninety Swadian soldiers holding a castle against three hundred-fifty Khanate horsemen with this song playing in the background is the most epic thing ever created.
Someone On Earth most likely, the only thing the khanate can do is ride around shoot arrows and annoy tf out of you, I think a good mix of 45 Swadian knights and 60 Nord huscarls are all you need, not even that much those 2 combined are the best you can have I’m no fan of archers or anything but if you add them in I bet it’d be deadlier

It had different words, BUT IT was STILL THE SAME Proud, Military morale boosting song!! love it!!!
I hear the song, and I wait for the command "Royal Salute, Present Arms." Old habits, and Army songs. "Flowers of the Forest" is another one with deep meanings.
This is the version my English (later US citizen) mother would sometimes sing when I was a child. Mom was of Irish, Welsh, Spanish and Rom decent. There was strong Scott ancestry on my father's side. Anyone with so much as a drop of Celtic blood woud be stirred to move mountains by this tribute to brave Welchmen. This was probably part of my motivation for enlisting in the United States Marine Corps decades ago. Semper Fidelis to our ancestors and allies around the globe. To my English kin and friends, God save the Queen.
this is such a special song. Read about Isandlwana, Rorke's Drift, and what Welshmen did that day - and you'll be proud if you're a Welshman or an Englishman

I heard this song years ago on the the movie Zulu. I was intrigued by it wanted to know more about this song. I'm an American so don't know much about this. inspiring song. love it. been listening to many other British songs. awesome
My father was in school in Builth Wells in the nineteen thirties, one of his classmates was grandson of one of the VCs winners at Rorkes Drift. I met him once when he called by to see my father many years ago.
I remember as a kid getting up super early in the morning to watch the AB's play the Taff's at Cardiff Arms Park and hearing a version of this. Epic! That crowd sure sounded like it had a bass section.
Sir (welshcelt1) If you check with your local Welsh Assembly office, M.P., M.E.P. or perhaps more appropriately office of The Prince of Wales you'll find the Dominion of Wales ('Laws in Wales Acts 1535-1542) is indeed a Principality . If you mean Wales is any less than England or Scotland it certainly is not, indeed it has its own officially recognised language, national anthem and flag - all internationally recognised - no other country in the UK has such. Cymru am byth!
The producers of 'Zulu' (1964) completely changed the lyrics. The song above is a pledge to protect the weak. It says nothing about 'warrior pennants or spear point gleaming'. This song is more appropriate to the Zulu regiments that fought at Isandlwana, the day prior to the brilliant defensive action conducted at Rorke's Drift.
Don Ciers You do realise there are loads of translations? Constant word changing to make it rhyme etc. The only original words are the literal Welsh translation.

Groans of wounded peasants dying,
Wails of wives and children flying,
For the distant succour crying
Call you Harlech men.
Shall the voice of wailing
Now be unavailing
You to rouse who never yet
In battles hour were failing
This our answer crowds down pouring
Swift as winter torrents roaring,
Not in vain the voice imploring,
Calls on Harlech men
Loud the martial pipes are sounding,
Every manly heart is bounding,
As our trusted chief surrounding,
March we Harlech men.
Short the sleep the foe is taking,
Ere the Morrow's morn is breaking
They shall have a rude awakening,
Roused by Harlech men.
Mothers cease your weeping,
Calm may be your sleeping,
You and yours in safety now
The Harlech men are keeping,
Ere the sun is high in heaven,
They you fear, by panic riven,
Shall like frightened sheep be driven
Far by Harlech men
This inspires, in every person, an intense feeling of spirit and bravery. What an amazing song.
A song that would turn one man into an army.
And an army united as one
I want a Harlech Man superhero now.
Can it make weebs normal
Soviet anthem is better

A song so powerful it makes me proud to be welsh, when I’m not welsh at all
You are Cymro if the story of Cymru motivates you to be!
I'm Irish and first heard this in the film Zulu, it is a beautiful song/psalm/hymn and I want this played at my funeral
Just listen to this song for the first time since my dads funeral brings so many memories back
Respect from your Celtic brothers in the north! Cymru am byth
Stupid scot dumbass. English people are majority celtic anyway
@@angleborn4842 i've neer heard anything more retarded in my life
@@didomonglo2653 he's not wrong though. The English share a majority of their DNA with the Welsh and Cornish. The anti Scottish sentiment is wrong though.
@@louisbaker4362 Wales Scotland and Ireland have retained their celtic culture unlike England hence why they are called celtic countries. Not really anything to do with DNA
I’ve never heard a choir so powerful and filled with passion and emotion as in this performance.
Great grandfather was part of the 3rd Dragoons. Its great to imagine that 100 years ago, he marched to this song :-)
I'm not even British but his song makes me want to fight for the queen and the glory of the British empire
The irony being men of Harlech was sung after the Welsh defeated the English at Harlech castle Wales.
+William Llwyn Well, it wasn't a Wales v England siege it was Lancastrians vs Yorkists. But yes, the Lancastrians were Welsh and Yorkists were mostly English.
Not at all, the song was wrote and sung in Welsh after glyndwyr's forces took over Harlech castle during the Welsh rebellion against the English.
William Llwyn
Actually, Callum was right as well. This song traditionally refers to the seven year siege of Harlech Castle during the War of the Roses, which is why it's sometimes called 'Through Seven Years'. Although, it *is* also associated with the briefer siege of Harlech Castle during Owain Glyndwr's revolt.
You just became colonized
Probably the best version on youtube, thank you very much for recording it!
Boys: haha SovietWomble!
Men: the Zulu 1960's movie is lit
Wonderful rendition, more poignant as it was recorded at Rorkes Drift, that slight echo is just brilliant.
So proud to be in the regiment whose forefathers sang this proudly. We still use it for our quock march. Gwell angau na chwilydd💪🏻❤🏴🔴
South wales boders have been disbanded???
Not Welsh, or British, hell I'm Turkish but true love for country also comes with recognition of other folks' passion for their own
And English language has some specific charm when it's used as well as this.
I have no memory of putting this on my Watch Later playlist, but I'm glad it's here.
I was playing airsoft and our base was under attack. One of the guys in my squad started singing this. It raised our morale and let us win the battle.
I fucking love this song
This song makes me feel proud to be Welsh, and I'm not even Welsh. Cymru rydd!
That made me smile :)
Gwyn Plaine me to...
***** Fuck Wales, ain't shit compared to America.
You forgot the question mark but yes! Shit is regularly compared to America ...... they smell the same!
I'm just mad about how the Brits oppressed my people for decades.
I'm a Yorkshireman and this brings a prickle of tears to the back of my eyes, my mother's maternal line are Welsh (strictly chapel and all that)
Oh man, that chord in "driven". Goosebumps.
That sounds like a just a E Major (first inversion), the placement of the inversion gives it the power when the basses and the tenors are absolutely hoofing the G#
It’s magic
I was in a Drum Corp and we used to all sing a song called Scouthouse on Parade to Men of Harlech. I love this tune.
This is the best song to listen to while playing Mount and Blade: Warband. Me and ninety Swadian soldiers holding a castle against three hundred-fifty Khanate horsemen with this song playing in the background is the most epic thing ever created.
Jackson Ripley the khanate is piss weak
Shaun very weak, but they are annoying as fuck
I assume you won?
Someone On Earth most likely, the only thing the khanate can do is ride around shoot arrows and annoy tf out of you,
I think a good mix of 45 Swadian knights and 60 Nord huscarls are all you need, not even that much those 2 combined are the best you can have I’m no fan of archers or anything but if you add them in I bet it’d be deadlier
BlackWater Security Service True, the Khanate would hardly be able to penetrate the gate or walls.
What splendid lyrics!

Left out my favorite verse variation though: Men of Harlech on to glory, This shall ever be your story, See these burning words before ye, Welshmen never yield!
Love this song! I first heard it when watching the Film, How Green was my Valley--and then when My family moved to Ohio and I started attending Lincoln Jr/Snr High School, we learned to sing it in Music class! It had different words, BUT IT was STILL THE SAME Proud, Military morale boosting song!! love it!!!
I hear the song, and I wait for the command "Royal Salute, Present Arms." Old habits, and Army songs. "Flowers of the Forest" is another one with deep meanings.
Makes your hair stand UP! I'm proud to British James Langley dalton was my great uncle got vc at Rorke drift!! Thank you for singing this chaps!! 👍👏😎💪
I am proud of the Welsh blood that flows in my veins
id rather be Welsh then English.
Lewis Jones What are you racist, you cant be proud of being welsh or white
Please tell me you are trolling :')
Lewis Jones Lol obviously, demonstrating the retardness of modern society.
Thank fuck for that! I agree though, world has gone mad mate
Just watched a Zulu clip and thought I'd look up the proper version. Absolutely fantastic Mark, many thanks for this.👍👍👍👍👍
What a song! Thank you! First heard of Harlech and their regument in Zulu. Regards and much respect from across the pond. I feel safer already!!! God bless!
Thank you - It's not actually from Zulu though. It was based on the siege of Harlech castle.
Just makes me want to capture a mining camp, use the workers as human shields, and then rush a Russian base.

The Welsh have always been amazing fighters. They fought to defend their homeland from the time of Romans all the way up to the 12th Century Norman conquest Wales. Just let that sink in. 1000 years or so.

Soldier, rouse thee! War is raging,
God and fiends are battle waging-
Every ransomed pow’r engaging,
Break the tempter’s spell.
Dare ye still lie fondly dreaming,
Wrapt in ease and worldly scheming,
While the multitudes are streaming
Downwards into hell?
Refrain:
Through the world resounding,
Let the gospel sounding,
Summon all, at Jesus’ call
His glorious cross surrounding.
Sons of God, earth’s trifles leaving,
Be not faithless but believing,
To your conqu’ring Captain cleaving,
Forward in the fight.
i did it with grammar dad yay :)
The Welsh Rugby team should use this instead of "Land of Our Fathers"!
Face it! "Land..." is a dirge. THIS is inspiring!

He sang the Cornish version. Same tune but different lyrics.

I heard this song years ago on the the movie Zulu. I was intrigued by it wanted to know more about this song. I'm an American so don't know much about this. inspiring song. love it. been listening to many other British songs. awesome
“Shall like frightened sheep be driven”
Sounds like they know from experience.
if you are making a reference to a bestiality joke, that was pretty weak
Even after a year, your mum still says baaa
My father was in school in Builth Wells in the nineteen thirties, one of his classmates was grandson of one of the VCs winners at Rorkes Drift. I met him once when he called by to see my father many years ago.
I am a born and bred New Zealander, but this gave me some Welsh pride, even though I am only by blood.
I remember as a kid getting up super early in the morning to watch the AB's play the Taff's at Cardiff Arms Park and hearing a version of this. Epic! That crowd sure sounded like it had a bass section.
Gives me goose bumps every time I hear this!
When you find out you have 0.1% Welsh ancestry.
I am speechless love this song it is better than any modern day song is.
RIP, Rick Rescorla...
Think of him everytime I hear this. One of history’s greatests.
Wow. What a performance! Excellent! Bravi! Thanks.
Older music speaks to me in a way that newer pop music usually just cannot.
