    The dog knows why it eats grass, that's the important part, my dad always said that the dog needed his "medicine", so he ate some grass.

      Dogs eat grass because its indigestible and they want to push something through.

    Question,
    How does mental trauma impact physical display of emotion?
    I ask because my grandfather died a few years ago and I cried... a lot. But since then I don't cry from sadness now. I am still sad, and I cry from laughter frequently, but I just don't shear tears of sadness.
    I would love to see an episode on this.

    My dog would OBSESSIVELY eat grass every day as if he was a damn cow. Especially if someone came home he'd get super excited and just start gulping huge mouthfuls. It worried us even though he'd never throw it up so we asked the vet about it. We knew he had a good diet because he was on a special one for his hip dysplasia. She ended up basically saying our dog just likes grass a lot (and is a glutton) xD.

    We know exactly why dogs eat grass hank, you touched on it kind of when you where talking about fiber. The only difference is when we say animals are doing it, its called roughage. dogs do it, cats do it, cows eat grass but they can actually break it down for energy using probiotics in their gut. (Making an alteration to our own probiotics to allow us to digest such things is on my list of things to do.)
    Interestingly enough, many scientists think that our ancestors as recently as the middle ages would eat roughage as part of their diet from many of the same sources we still see animals use. In our modern diets, this role is mainly played by grains. Grains are easier on our stomach and more nutritious, they're kind of like the human co-evolutionary version of grass.

  • @DruneKelly

    Besides the few reasons you listed there's another one. Like Gorillas who strip a certain kind of leaf and swallow it whole to act as an internal parasite remover. Most dogs that eat mass amounts of grass should be tested for pinworms, hook worms, and tapeworms as well as coccidiosis, and other enteric organisms. Dogs seem to use some of it anyway, as an internal scourung pad. Other times, tbey're looking for trace minerals. Regular dog klbble contains the macro nutrients but not many of the micro nutrients. (unless you pay $60 for a 15 lb bag of specialty food) of course, this and the quality of dog food moist or dry is what made me decide I needed to change my dog's diet. We vary between raw chicken and raw pork (and yes, I realize many will jump on md for those 2 meats) They get 2 raw eggs a week mixed with cooked rice, olive oil and a small amount of cooked oatmeal or barley. Their everyday feed is chicken and turkey necks, gizzards, heart and livers. They get red meat once a week and then I buy tallow (trimmed beef fat) to augment the lean proteins a bit. I've been raising, breeding and training dog for 12 years. After the diet change, my dogs never had another alleric reaction to anything. Their fur was perfect and my 86 lb German Shepherd/Malamute mix breed died shortly after her 18th birthday.

This book also talks about what to feed dogs, because it was before kibble was popular. Meat was known to be very important even at that time.

    Why do certain genetic diseases effect people differently? For example myself, my aunt (mothers side) and cousin (father's side) all have Chron's Disease. My cousin is on a very high doses of medication just to get by, my aunt had surgery and is on a relatively moderate medication, and I having the condition coming in from both sides can maintain myself through diet alone. I am very curious into this.

    My dog go into the dog biscuits and ate far too many. When I let her outside she ran straight for the longest grass she could find and started eating that almost in what seemed to me was desperation for pain relief. It could have been an attempt to get moisture from the dewy grass but I believe it was self medicating against trapped wind or another gut issue.

    • @2ttsi

      Mohow Depends on how big the group is, if its large you need to start thinking about the speed of sound

    • @superlemus2
      @superlemus2 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It isn't, the clapping will travel in a wave from the point of initiation at the speed of light as people hear the claps from clappers closer in. You could use light to better synchronize. Granted, even with lights they won't truly be synchronized as light has a finite speed, but any basic course in relativity will teach you that there is no such thing as absolute simultaneity.

      "travel in a wave from the point of initiation at the speed of light as people hear the claps"?
      Hear? Speed of Light? To hear something it needs to be a soundwave, and sound do not travel at the speed of light. So the Wave would definetly not travel at the speed of light, only at the speed of sound at most, but by all likelyhood slower then that since we have to factor in individual reactiontime and aucustic layout of the surroundings.

      +Randy Johnson (MetaSceptile) Just because they CAN eat it doesn't mean they should. Dogs are omnivorous because they can absorb nutrients from it, cats can't.

    • @poopsmagoo
      @poopsmagoo 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No!! Cats eat small amounts of plants but they are obligate carnivores (Pierson 2008). Also called hypercarnivores, these animals require at least 70% of their diet to be meat. Lower levels of consumption result in sickness, including organ malfunctions and failures, blindness, and eventually a wasting death. Dogs and cats are different animals with different gastrointestinal abilities and nutritional demands

      animal have been observe for eating grass or plants when they are having some health problem and carnivore do eat grass and plant when they have too.. i mean just like panda, they arent omnivore or herbivorous and yet they eat mainly bambo because its the only food source they mange to find.

      nope, not really panda are consider as carnivores.. they only adapted to eat bambo because they lose their ability to hunt. when present a chance for meat, they will choose meat over bambo.
      also even if you consider as healthy, the cat might not think so, after all you take aspirin when you are coming down with a fever. animal might do the same, they dont have to be really really sick to eat grass,.

    My cat loves eating grass. It appears she mainly does it as a way to clean her teeth like a toothbrush. The majority is left unswallowed, but chewed. She does not do it to induce vomiting (in fact not eating grass seems to make her vomit more often), and her faeces seem unaffected. I suspect it is more like an enjoyable habit for her... very enjoyable, sometimes she wont come inside unless I brink in a chunk of grass for her to munch. She prefers the types of grass with more silicon in the leaf structure (further enhancing the toothbrush theory), which has put my indoor bamboo at a severe disadvantage.
    My dog on the other hand obviously does it as a source of fiber. She will eat more grass when her poos are runny, and less grass when her poos are solid. The grass in her faeces usually seems relatively undigested.

    I have a 14 yr old pug who is in great health except for her eyes and hearing. Commercial dog foods kept making her sick, lethargic, diarrhea etc. so I started making her food at home 6 years ago. It's easy and cheaper than most of the canned crap. Here's my recipe:1.5" of ground turkey from the tube, 1Tblsp of mixed veggies baby food, 1 doggie multi-vitamin, crushed, 1 doggie aspirin-for her aches and pains- (30mg) crushed, a dash of salt, and 2/3 cup of quick cooking oats. Mix everything together and form into a patty or mini-loaf( I put it in a small Correl cooking dish) and microwave on high for about 2:15. Mash it up and serve it in the dog's dish topped with chicken broth or beef broth. Watch it quickly disappear! Keep in mind that this is for a pug/small dog so if yours is medium or large you'll have to use more ingredients. You can also make a week's worth of food at once and freeze it til chow time then just nuke it and it's ready to go. Total cost for everything for a week is about 3.50 or so. You can also add regular chopped veggies instead of baby food if your dog will eat them- mine very deliberately spits them out if she finds any.
    IMPORTANT!!! Remember, your dog needs exercise every day! So do you! So take Fido on a daily 1 hr. stroll and give him plenty of time to smell various places and do his business. And NO TREATS FROM THE TABLE because they always lead to FAT PUGS!! And obesity lowers their life-span by years. Beggars should be put into the bathroom at meal-time for their own good, and don't feel guilty about it. Happy dog-days!

    Here's a quick question, on a hot summer day, when you leave your windows cracked when you leave your car in a driveway or parking lot, is it actually keeping your car cooler, or is it just a sick game we play with ourselves like leaving the ceiling fans on in your house on while you're gone so that we think it's colder when we get home, when we were actually just moving air around?

      Ret Samys Well so far i know when we had a dog, the one in my avatar, Only eat grass when it didnt feel great, When you could see it was a little sick it went and ate grass, Most likely she did vomit afterwards, So i guessed it was something due induce vomiting or cleaning her stomach aswell as she never did it otherwise, she barely eats something she doesnt like anyhow :P

    • @IamSamys
      @IamSamys 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      broerbreaker9240Z You know, I have no idea. But apparently, it's not universal for dogs do vomit after eating grass, while eating grass seems to be a lot more universal.
      Cats, on the other hand, are known to use grass to induce some stomach reversal.

  • @Gillmojo
    @Gillmojo 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Is it possible that domestic cats have 'evolved' to eat a wider variety of foods, aside from meat, simply because they live in homes where these foods are available and are often left on plates just waiting to be nommed when their humans are looking elsewhere? Cats are opportunists and will pretty much, in my experience, try anything if it is lying around unattended. My cat will eat chilli, broccoli, vegetable curry, macaroni cheese, marshmallows and marmite to name but a few things he has snaffled. He seems none the worse for these gourmet morsels by the way. He will also eat grass which is usually closely followed by a quick barf and on to the next...

    • @wild_pixie
      @wild_pixie 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No, it's not. You're operating under the assumption that animals ALWAYS eat what's nutritious for them. You eat junk food right? Veg, cheese, sugar, this is junk food to a cat. Commercial cat food always has grain and veggies, especially the cheaper stuff so cats get addicted to sugar. Then they want more, so they steal their humans' food. They're not rational like humans, they're just animals they do what feels good.

    • @Gillmojo
      @Gillmojo 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No assumption involved as I know full well that my cats don't only eat what is good for them. As I said, they are opportunist and will eat anything they can get their teeth into, and the fact they can get to these foods seems to be because they live in our homes where this food is available. And no, I don't eat junk food as it tends to make me ill; I learned that lesson, unlike my cats who continue to eat everything :)

    • @wild_pixie
      @wild_pixie 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Okay but if you had no voice of reason, you would be eating all the junk foods with abandon.
      In a way I guess you can say they are opportunistic, but only in the way an addict is. They aren't true opportunists though, if they were they wouldn't puke up that stuff they would be able to digest it. Without big name cat food none of this would happen. They are addicted, and addicts just dgaf they'll steal what they want. Read the label on your cat's food, you'll understand why your cats love to eat that stuff so much.

    • @Gillmojo
      @Gillmojo 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Only one of my cats eats tinned cat food, the others refuse it regularly, so I guess they have some taste :) I have discovered they are more likely to throw up commercial cat food than the stuff they steal from the bin, off plates or from their trips around the garden.

    • @wild_pixie
      @wild_pixie 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cats are built for meat, but they can still eat other things. It's just that their digestive systems aren't efficient at digesting plants. It will eat plants, but you need meat in it's diet. So it's considered a carnivore.

      From what I have learned, there are only two reasons: they are either sick or bored. Some dogs with malabsorption problems eat their feces to gain nutrition that may have been missed the first time around.Some dogs with ravenous apettites will get their feces for similar reasons.Boredom will lead dogs to eat their feces as well as lack of exercise.It can also be the result of bad house-breaking. Some dogs will eat their feces to avoid scolding. Either way, feces consumption should be discouraged because it can be dangerous to people. It can become a bad habit for dogs.
      The only other instance of feces-consumption is dogs will stimulate the rectal and urethral areas of their puppies to get them to defecate and consume that to keep the nesting area clean. I hope that helps.

      ***** Sorry for the late reply. Once a dog has made a habit of eating poop it is hard to stop them. There was probably an original reason your dog ate feces but now she does it just because she has always done it. The only way you could stop her now would be to clean up every time she poops or you punished her every time you saw her do that. You should talk to your vet about her habits.

      stiimuli Cat's are just as filthy, as well as diseased, lazy, and generally all round shitty pets that couldn't care less about you.
      Cat's aren't really pets so much as they're decoration that can poop and disappears at random only returning to eat all your food and leave various dead things around the house to be found at extremely inopportune moments of mental vulnerability, like uncovering a bird corpse in the towel rack after a shower with a new girlfriend.
      Fucking cat, I'll kill it when I find it....

    At 0:15, Hank misuses the term "to beg the question." Many people mistakenly think that "to beg the question" means something like "to compel one to ask the question" "to make one wonder." In fact, the term means that you assume the answer to the question as part of your proof of the answer to the question, essentially engaging in circular reasoning.
    For example, if one argued "all dogs have four legs because all dogs are quadrupeds" or "honey is good for you because honey is a healthy treat" one would be begging the question.
    Just saying...

    my first cat ate grass exclusively to vomit, i remember watching him eat it in quite a hurried manor, and then heave and sometimes throw up no more than a minute after. Well ill be honest i don't know if my cat did it because he felt like hurling or if it was just a side-effect that he put up with, but either way he could not stomach it. I didn't realize at the time but after getting a new cat our old one did vomit an abnormal amount (about twice a month on average). anyway my point is eating grass definately induced vomiting in my cat and id like to assume he was doing it on purpose.

    Do you think you could do a video on why dogs eat poop and other things like that which could contain parasites and such? Also, my dogs have always only ever eaten grass when something else was going on, like if they were having diarrhea, or vomiting repeatedly. I'd take them outside and hang out with them so they can get over it without ruining the carpet, and they would just start eating grass. Never seen a dog eat grass who didn't recently vomit or throw up beforehand. So I always figured it was something about their digestion process of it, that putting something on their stomach stabilizes it or something. O:

    I read years ago that both cats and dogs eat grass both to regulate their tummies and also to induce vomiting (in high quantities). In other words: a little grass settles an upset stomach, a lot of grass inducing vomiting to get rid of an incredible upset stomach. Both are, basically, omnivores, although they do mostly eat meat naturally.. they do eat leafy stuff.. more often than one would think!
